In all honesty, I'd give it 3 stars too based off of the food, price, and comparing it to the comparables. In Concord, there's not much authentic viet food or Chinese food. So it was quite a surprise when my parents asked if I wanted Pho for lunch. Since this was the third time to Pho in 2 weeks, I figured, why not? I could compare it while the pho flavors are stuck in my mind. Food: The Pho has a medium taste but it wasn't tasting like pho. Yes you can say that maybe I'm just used to a certain blend of spices, but no. Even buying canned pho soup at 99 ranch has a different taste. The food also had a good portion size. The "regular" size bowl was about the size of a large bowl in San Diego. It was full of noodles and meat too! Service: This is where they lost the star. In San Diego, there's a place called Pho Ca Dao. I have driven there from work, ordered, eaten, paid the bill and driven back to work to make in to a meeting in the time it took for us to order. The worse part? Us orering means we walked up to the register after being told "It's table service and I"ll take your order" and "I'll be right there" 5 times over the course of 30 minutes. My husband and I decided to check Saigon Bistro out on our shopping trip to Fry's. Our first impression was very good. The place is clean and has very coloful walls and artwork. There are 2 flat screen tv's which are viewable from pretty much anywhere. Considering it was the NFL playoffs, this was important for my husband. We choose 3 dishes to get a feel for the menu. I chose the wonton noodle soup, my husband choose the grilled pork with vermacelli and egg rolls and we shared one of the grilled pork sandwiches. I loved my soup, although I won't be such a piggy in the future and I'll go for the small bowl. We both agreed that the sandwich was absolutely wonderful, and worth a trip back just for itself. My husband loved the pork & veggies, but wasn't hot for the noodles. There wasn't anything wrong with them, he just is a fiend for rice. So he's already planned to get the same dish, but with rice instead of noodles. I'd recommend this spot to others, we will be back for more! Have been craving pho for the past couple of months and he found one around his area. It felt and looked very clean which made me think it was going to be "Americanized" pho. To my surprise the pho ga was pretty good! We ordered the pot stickers, pho go and the beef combo plate with a side of pork. Careful when you bite into those pot stickers because those things come out piping hot. Because the pot stickers were so moist, it had burnt the whole inside of my mouth. The ratio between filling and wrapping was off, the wrapping was too thick. As I said earlier, the chicken pho was pretty good. It didn't have oil bubbles or chicken fat. The combo plate had a lot of food. The beef was better than the pork. The egg roll was good and I loved the dipping sauce that they serve with it. Good run of the mill pho place that reminds me of the pho spots in San Jose. Good solid food. For people expecting service, you're patronizing an Asian establishment. Oh my freaking goodness! What is the matter with me? Why did it take me this long to check this place out? Why did it take me this long to try a banh mi? These were what was going on in my head when my daughter and I went to lunch here last weekend. On our way to her hula lessons, my daughter saw an ARF event going on in Park n Shop. Since we were on a tight schedule, I promised her we would stop by after hula. We didn't make it to the ARF event, but we made it to Saigon Bistro! (It was due to logistics: overly dramatic daughter was "famished" and "could eat an elephant this very moment") The daughter had her usual Vietnamese fare, pho ga. Since it was a hot day, I was not exactly in the mood for hot soup. So even though I am not a sandwich fan, I elected to try their banh mi thit nuong (grilled pork sandwich). The daughter was happy with her pho and told me we could and should go back. Since she is a stubborn diner as much as she is a picky eater, this was great news to me. New place to frequent? Score! But the banh mi, it was a revelation! Why, oh why, did I always opt for a pho? When all this time, I could have substituted a banh mi for precious stomach real estate? The banh mi was delicious. The vegetables and the cilantro were perfect complements to the sumptuous pork. I have always been a fan of Vietnamese rice plates, and this was just like that, except it was with this soft, chewy bread instead of rice. AND I don't need to use a fork and knife! This is close to work. I've gotten the vermicelli bowls and sandwiches and by far subpar to what I've had and also a little more expensive in comparison to better. The sauce to the vermicelli bowl was missing something. Not enough fishiness? That's a little odd to say, but it seemed very watered down. Parking is usually easy to find since this restaurant is located in the Park n Shop shopping center behind Starbucks, next to a bagel shop and also Fry's Electronics. My favorites dishes are: #34 Noodle soup with sliced steaks and meatballs. You can order Pho in a small, medium, or large. I like mine EXTRA spicy! #61 Vermicelli Noodles with grilled pork and eggrolls. The grilled pork is cooked to perfection and seasoned well. Also there spring rolls are good and Saigon milk tea. The banh xeo was crispy and delicious; however it could have used more shrimp and meat inside. My parents ordered the seafood pho and #31. The pho broth was on point, but my parents also verbalized it was lacking meat and seafood. The service was quick and the employees were friendly. The restaurant is clean and well kept. I was in the area and decided to check this place out since we didn't seem to see any better place to try out. I decided to try their #69 Crispy saigon style crepe filled with shrimp & pork. It was HUGE when I got it. First thing I thought to myself was woah such a good deal. Once I opened the crepe, it was just filled with bean sprout and very little shrimp. I dont recall eating much pork in there. The crepe itself was super dry and tasted very floury. They did not give enough fish sauce. We had to flag them down for more. Having more fish sauce wasn't the solution, it just made it less dry. I felt like I was just eating a vegan dish that did not have much flavor. We also had a bun bo hue. Nothing special to me, but for sure better choice than the crepe. Service- Meh. They come only to seat you, take your order and give you your food. I work in Concord, and sometimes discover places when I'm not even really trying to discover things, I've walked past this place so many times. I've taken a look at the menu in the window countless times always in hopes of paying this establishment a visit. Well I finally did decide to go in and here is my review of my experience. Me and my homie was hungry and wanted to eat somewhere we both hadn't had. In the Park N Shop strip mall, I've probably eaten at about 80 percent of the restaurants here, with some more to be explored one day. Funny part is he was the one that had suggested this place and I was happy about it because it had totally slipped my mind. So naturally I had no reservations and said "let's do it" upon entering, were greeted with a smile, seated and handed menus. After that it seemed like we were forgotten because two other people are seated and orders were taken and then the lady behind the counter shouted something in I'm assuming Vietnamese to a waitress and then pointed to us. The waitress came over finally after about 20 minutes and took our order. On this visit I decided to go with their Curry Chicken with white rice. My friend got the same thing. What showed up looked nothing like the picture, but I knew it was indeed chicken curry. The curry used was mild, and had a very good and not overbearing taste. But the broth or soup was kinda watery. Usually this dish is more like a stew, a little thicker in consistency, or at least from my experiences at other establishments. But I wasn't disappointed, tasted good. I wished the poached the onions and bell peppers a bit more. I think it would of complimented the taste better. You got a leg and thigh cooked in the broth, it was pretty good. In conclusion, if you like Vietnamese places, check this one out. They also have Pho's and those vietnamese sandwiches (forgot what they're called) and different appetizers. I love their food! I always get their banh mi and it's always spot on! It's always fulfilling whenever I have it. So good!

We like this fast Vietnamese restaurant for a number of reasons: 1. Unlike Kevin's from aroudn the block, they offer banh mi sandwiches! These are buttery french rolls stuffed with pickled veggies, lettuce, and the meat of your choice - either ham, pate, headcheese, or my favorite marinated grilled pork. Its pricey compared to Oakland chinatown, but the high quality makes it worth it. 2. Iced Vietnamese coffee with condensed milk. Its served in a plastic cup and consistently has a very strong coffee flavor - borderline bitter at first with just enough of a sweet aftertaste to make you a fan. Can definitely help clean the mouth after a savory pho dish. 3. The various pho and seafood noodle soups are excellent here - its nice how they offer you the option of regular noodles and the egg noodles. Service is quick and the place is pretty clean. We normally go on weekends for lunch so there's usually some sporting event (baseball, basketball, football, golf, etc.) televised. read more

I've only gone here for their drinks. What happened was that the nearby Quickly was not open yet, despite the yelp page stating otherwise. I was craving an avocado smoothie, so I came here. I bought the avocado smoothie and the mango slush. The smoothie was ok. It was a bit too watered down, but at least it was cold, refreshing and exactly what I needed/craved. The mango slush was yummy, but decent at best as well. It was super sweet, like unnaturally sweet. the mango flavor seemed artificial. Price was descent and the service was really nice. I did notice that they had 2 vegetarian options here: The Banh Mi Chay which is the vegetarian sandwich, and the Bi Cuon Chay, which is the vegetarian spring rolls wrapped in tofu, noodles, and vegetables. You can never go wrong going to this place. On the weekends, my boyfriend and I go to our desingated "sandwich" place. My boyfriend is a fan of the pho, but I love the $4 sandwiches, especially the number one (ham, pate, cheese). I can't help it, but I always get the Thai Iced Tea, more for the cute plastic covers that get put on. Update #2: 12/17/2007 (yes, 2 days later) Yummy, pho sure!! Dac Biet with the raw steak on the side. Steaming hot bowl came with a generous portion of fresh basil (3 big sprigs. I used them all!!), sprouts, fresh jalepeno slices, and wedge of juicy lime (much preferred vs. lemon wedge). Per my request, not a spec of cilantro to be found . . . perfect!! Broth was flavorful. Meat was tasty. Noodles cooked to perfection. Tendons just melted in my mouth. A couple of slices of jalepeno in the broth and a squirt of Srirachi and Hoisin in a small dipping bowl and we were in business!! Bumping up my rating for Saigon Bistro from 3 to 4 stars. One bite of my whole sandwich had some pate flavor. If it's going to be so skimpily applied that you can barely taste it, then don't even list it on the menu. The sandwich was good, but my expectations didn't get met, as well as not really providing much of what was said to be included. Was it because it was Sunday and maybe not the regular cook? Maybe my palate is not set up for the subtleties of flavors like that!! Also, an option for some jalapenos would be good to spice things up a little. Did I miss it? Bahn mi sandwiches ftw! They were the perfect picnic food to bring to the Backstreet Boys concert at the Sleeptrain Pavilion. Why pay for overpriced concert food when each sandwich here is less than $5? I tried the BBQ sandwich (cha siu) sandwich and the meat was the perfect combo of sweet and smokey. I wonder if they get their meat from Ranch 99? It was also loaded with different veggies so it was a surprisingly hefty sandwich. I am glad I kept the jalapenos on the sandwich...they added just enough heat without being overwhelming. The mayo kept the baguette moist but not soggy, which was good because we didn't eat our sandwich til about an hour later at the concert. My friends were equally satisfied with the grilled chicken and vegetarian sandwiches. Went here for lunch and it was phenomenal. The place was packed because of World Cup and Lunch hour, but they were able to seat us immediately. The Servers were friendly and very helpful. The Daily special was Beef Spare Ribs and Kim Chee. I like Kim Chee and was intrigued by the Special because it also included Rice and Soup. We started out with Crispy Calamari, Pot stickers, and Egg rolls. The Appetizers came out quick and it was delicious. The drinks came with refills if you ordered from the fountain. My in-laws ordered Pho Noodles and the Chicken Vietnamese Sandwich. My Special was Glazed with Teriyaki and was little salty, but it tasted good because it was tender. Large space, pretty fast / efficient service, all the basics on the menu, large flat screen TVs mounted on the walls and prices about 15-20% higher than what you'd expect. Why minus 2 stars - The table next to me had the wrong food delivered .... staff came back a minute later to take back the soup ... I'm not sure what they did with the incorrect bowl of soup, but I hope they didn't give that to someone else. Another table got 3 out of 5 dishes delivered ... i noticed they were waiting for the rest of their food and when they finally caught someone to ask, turns out the sandwich queue was running about 5-10 minutes behind ... This place was once my favorite Vietnamese places to go in the 925, but with the latest crop of Vietnamese restaurants to pop up in my hood, this place has slowly crept down on the priority list. I came here yesterday with the boyfriend after our salon appointment, and well the service I had come to expect just wasn't the same. I don't know if there was a change in ownership but the brothers I used to see running the joint were nowhere to be found! Also prices were marked up too! The food is pretty much the same as before with a few new dishes added in the windows, but I can't honestly say this is a 5-star joint anymore, sorry Saigon Bistro, but you guys need to step up your game a bit! read more

Not entirely sure what the heck is going on right now. I order one thing and one only. The #47 Bun bo Hue with no porkblood. My order came out. I usually sip on the soup first to get a taste for what I would like to add. THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO FLAVOR. Like zero. Nothing. No flavor, no spice. I couldn't taste anything. Not only was my soup bad... Saigon bistro is messing up big time today. During lunch time today, multiple orders for other customers were 1) being forgotten. People waited.. and waited for their food. To the point they had to ask where's their food 2) orders were being messed up. I saw at least 3 orders being taken back to the kitchen 3) food were being placed on tables that was even ordered in the first place 4) workers brought out food, walked around cluelessly. Didn't know who the food belongs too. Ends up asking customers if they ordered what they were holding. Get it together Saigon. You have a lot of loyal customers who come here. Whatever is going on in the kitchen, needs to be fixed ASAP. The crew on the flood seems to need training as well. But for a side note... trying to sell alcohol at a noodle house is a little weird. Cheap delicious sandwiches. This is one of my lunch go tos. It's fast and delicious everytime

I stopped by here for lunch prior to shopping at Fry's and one thing I hate is food with too much MSG (too much to the point where your throat and lips start to dry out within the hour). The Goi Cuon was nicely done but their Pho Da Biet (large size) was really large. I had the meat on the side and comparing to my favorite place in San Pablo, Their portions of condiments (the bean sprouts) were somewhat small for two person. The mint and lime was ample. When eating pho, what I like to do is spoon some soup first to get an idea of what to expect, and I was a bit disappointed. The soup tasted too dry and full of MSG; I think if they added some beef oil to make it more oily, it would be more tasty and they probably wouldn't need any MSG. Although I ordered a large size ($(9.75), it was really more noodle and soup; not more meat. I ordered my beef on the side and what I got was five small pieces that barely covered a small tea cup plate. The noodles were a bit too tender for my taste, I like mine to be on the firmer size because as it sits in the soup, it will get even softer. By the time I almost reached the bottom, the noodles on the bottom of the bowl were really soft. I have no problem paying $10 for a good comfort bowl of pho, but unfortunately this place is a strikeout. read more

This is super slow compared to other places :/ My mom got her bowl first and was almost halfway done by the time I got my plate. I had a few spoonfuls of her food and it was pretty good. The soup is spicy but not too spicy. She said it had more of a lemongrass flavor compared to other places that usually put a lot of black pepper in it. She gave it a 5/5 which means it must've been really good since she's had it many times and know what's good and what's not. My rice plate was good but not great. The food wasn't even that hot when I got it! It came with a bowl of chicken soup and another bowl of fish sauce. Everything was delicious and the pork chops were cooked perfectly. The only downside was how lukewarm it was. Overall I think it was a 4/5 dish. If it wasn't for the super long wait and the higher prices, I'd give this place a 4/5. The sandwiches are quite pricey. #9 steamed pork patty with pate is $4.50, but it sure beats driving out to Oakland or Pinole to get my Vietnamese sandwich fix. #31 Special Combination pho is $8.25 and hugggeeee! I usually like going with a friend to share the pho and half a sandwich. Their Vietnamese iced coffee could be richer, but at least it wasn't overly sweet. The food here is alright and the prices are a bit on the expensive side. This is one of the cleaner pho restaurants and is my regular place to get pho near home. I'm a regular at this place because my kids are crazy about their pho bo vien and cha gio (Vietnamese egg rolls). And yes, my kids are pretty eclectic when it comes to food. They prefer this place to Kevin's noodle house. I can actually say I like the pho here. The one thing that makes pho stand out is the broth, and the broth here is rich and not too salty. They are also really generous with the noodles. I'm usually more of a pho tai person, but you have to get their pho ga (chicken). Really really good. It's my go-to esp when I'm sick. From time to time, I order a sandwich (I've had better in San Jose and LA), the dry vermicelli with either grilled chicken or grilled shrimp (generous with the chicken, skimpy with the shrimp), spring rolls (love the shredded pork one), and of course the cha gio, which my son kills. You can't really go wrong here. Service can get slow sometimes esp around the lunch hour. Ever since Kevin's noodle house around the corner closed down for renovations, it's been a lot busier. As for parking, not many in front. And DON'T try to park in front of the 99 cent store. It's better to just park over at Fry's. read more

I used to live in the tendernob and polk st used to have these AWESOME OMG WTF viet sandwich shop.. they only sold sandwiches and the price was always around 2 bux. Honestly they were a 11 on a scale from 1-10. Not many places I have found serve viet sandwiches and in the same style. With that being said I give thier sandwhiches about a 8.5-9. The bread is nice and toasty and seasoning and choice of veggies pretty good. I like the chicken and pork and havent tried the others yet. I would prefer a little more meat and less veggie and perhaps a little roasted garlic and more cilantro. But its hard enough to find a place that gives you tasty viet sandwhiches on the fly. For the price its a pretty damn goodl. I go there about once a week now. UPDate: They must have read this... somehow I went there 2 times this last week and they upped the sandwiches.. lol perfect balance of meat and veggies and I also tried the all veggie one.. I love it. I tried the wrapped noodles with shrimp and peanut sauce very good too. I decided that if I lived within a 5 mile radius I probably would be eating one of their sandwiches for dinner 3 days a week. For the longest time I've been searching for a place around this area that serves Vietnamese sandwiches. I've even tried to sweet talk the Vietnamese owner of a lunch truck that used to come by my work to start making them, but no luck. Finally, this place opened and I couldn't be more happier!!! Their sandwiches aren't the typical ones you can find in San Jose...you know the ones that are so skinny and thin, and filled with your typical lunch meat you can find in any deli. The sandwiches at Saigon Bistro are the best I've ever tasted. My favorite is the grilled chicken sandwich. They use marinated chicken thighs that have been cooked to perfection. They're not dried out at all and they are so moist and full of flavor. The veggies are crisp and have that sweet/tart thing going on...I'm not a big fan of carrots but I'll eat them as long as they're in this sandwich! I've also tried their Pho and their Won ton Noodle Soup...Both are really good. I've also had their grilled chicken rice plate. They use the same chicken that they use in their sandwich which I love, but honestly, I prefer some of the other mom and pop shops in the area for a better, more fulfilling rice plate, and for less money. They ran out of Banh mi when we arrived at 6:00. We then ordered the pho combination and the grilled pork vermicelli. The pho was hot but the broth was really sweet. It think they used too much rock sugar. The grilled pork was also really salty. I feel a bit guilty for writing a bad review for my people's but it wasn't good. Its a c@ld day and lots of driving ahead. I just got off of Hwy 248 to my next appointment when I recognized the strip mall with Fry's Electronics and Siagon Bistro. My Vietnamese. Buddy took me here once and I remembered it being busy and good. Walk up to the counter order and pay then decide from he many various seating options. Secluded area with booths, bar tables in front of big flat screen TV on ESPN, or push a couple of tables together for a larger party. Clean and update decor. Nice experience and good home cooking. Sandwiches and rice plates also on the menu. I give 4 stars were there's a waiter. You don't have to bus your table. read more
