Friday, 11/4, was the 2nd time I had dinner at the new Sagres Restaurant on Columbia St. The first visit last year was good: nice place and good food. THIS TIME I was very disappointed. First, I made reservations for 3 in the morning. I asked for 6:45 pm seating and was told they only seat on the hour so I agreed to be there at 7. We got there 10 mins. early only to be told there was as least a 10 min. wait - understandable. The maître d' appeared not to be able to find our reservations on a poorly handwritten list. The place was very busy! WE waited while other parties 'with reservations' were seated. Then 7:15 came and went and I was told it would be another 5 mins. Some 10 mins. later the maître d' told me it would be another 10 mins. Then told 5 mins. more. After 7:30, some 10 mins. later, he came by to show us to the table (which had been sitting empty the entire time we were there). He walked to a table, dropped the menus, and kept walking not saying a word or looking at us. My daughter and I looked at each other wondering if this was our table or not. A rather rude treatment to say the least! Another 5 or 10 mins. went by and I had to grab the maître d' to ask him to get us a server. Several more minutes later a waitress finally arrived. It took another 7 - 10 mins to get water and another 5 mins for 1 drink. When we finally placed our order she came back to say they were out of the appetizer we ordered. We skipped it. It took another 15 - 20 mins. to get the meals - no too bad considering the volume of people there, but they brought 2 of the 3 meals. Mine did not show up for another 10 mins. Too top it all off, the food was mediocre at best: bland with little seasoning. I typically leave at least a 20% tip but could not get myself to encourage this type of service and food! read more

I don't normally write reviews but with how disappointing this place was I felt the need. We had nine people in our party. We had a 7:30 reservation. They came over and put a basket of bread on the table and then did not return for twenty minutes. We had no water or drink of any kind. When someone did come back they took our order and shortly after our soup came out. The soup was not hot and two of the party asked for salad which did not come until after we were finished eating. The steak was cold so it was sent back. By the time they brought it back out everyone else had finished their dinner. We asked for a manager. He came over and said it was busy and it takes a long time to cook things. He apologized and left the table clearly not caring that we were upset. We will not be back! read more

Host at the door needs to get rid of his attitude and the waiters need to pay attention a little better. I ordered the Mariscada and the broth was very good but the plate had way too many onions and peppers and overcooked small shrimp.My wife had the Atlentjana which looked very appetizing but was overcooked and chewy at times. Arrived to a host who could not find the reservation we made and proceeded to give me an attitude. I had to find it in the book he was looking at but when I pointed it out he still gave me an attitude because it was written in a slot a half hour later than the time I had given him (our friend who made the reservation gave us the wrong time). Although we were on time he said we'd have to wait so he could get the table ready so we proceeded to the bar where we waited about 10 minutes before the bartender took our order and we got a drink. It was slightly crowded but the wait was more likely due to the place being understaffed. So we finally sat down at 6:30pm and at least three of the things we wanted to order from the menu were not in stock. At 6:30?? Anyway...I got the Portuguese steak which was over cooked and dry and the potatoes were under cooked and white instead of crispy and browned. Ate here about two months ago, had an overcooked stuffed fish and my friend had a magnificent steak with mushroom sauce. Kept thinking about that wonderful steak so we returned a couple of weeks ago...ordered what we thought was the same steak for $21 unfortunately it was not the same, instead, a horrible cut of beef that tasted like liver, vegetables served with meal were cold. My $11 glass of wine barely drinkable...order a bottle of wine when dining here, to be sure it's fresh and palatable...Trinca Blotas excellent red! For the second time in a row I was disappointed with my overcooked & cold food. I've given them the big X, meaning I won't be back for a while...hopefully they'll make some changes in the kitchen and serve a steak that is $21 quality! read more

I was excited to find out that Sagres had re-opened, that excitement ended upon walking in the door. The host was immediately rude and when I asked to be sat in the lounge he walked my party to the bar. The service was S-L-O-W!!! It took about 10 minutes before the bartender took our drink orders and after eventually placing our food orders another 40 minutes or so had passed before our food came. It was lunch time by the way and the place was not busy at all. The "chef" came out and apologized about the delay and told us that the wait would be worth it. IT WASN'T!! The food was TERRIBLE!! Did the recipes burn with the place?? I will never go back again and as far as I am concerned Sagres is gone forever. read more

Wow! This was a total experiment and from the house sparkling water to the cappuccino it was amazing! The mozambique shrimp are a great appetizer. We had the salmon that was cooked to perfection and the best paella valenciana the I have ever had! All for a reasonable price! Go and you won't regret it! read more

Visited here last month with my parents. My review is mixed because the experience was mixed. We arrived on a weekday at 4pm. The host scoffed at us for not having a reservation. The place was empty? Our waitress couldn't tell my dad the difference in two different steaks... size or how they were cooked. He suggested she ask the chef. She came back with only partial answers... we were almost embarrassed for her ditziness. Although the place was empty, we waited forever for our food. Thank goodness for the sangria pitcher. Both parents ordered a steak (different ones) and both were happy. I ordered a pork dish (alajandra or something...) and it was awesome!! We all ordered desert. Dad got cheesecake. I had the bean desert, and mom got a custard Dish. Hers was the only one worth raving about. The vibe/decor were on point but due to high prices, a very lacking waitress and being scoffed at for no ressies... well, we don't plan to go back. Plenty of other great Portuguese resteraunts in the area. read more

I RARELY write a review, but this place was so bad I had to. Came here on a Saturday night with reservations for a large group. Showed up right on time and waited about 10 min to be seated which was fine. Sat down and we weren't even given enough menus for everyone at the table. 20 min went by and no waitress. I finally see the manager or owner and ask him what's going on. He said it was his fault he didn't tell anyone to take care of our table. 10 min go by and I ask the manager/owner again what's going on he again says someone will be by. At this point we are all ready to leave. 10 more min go by and the manager/owner comes by and asks if we want any drinks? Are you kidding me of course we do we have been waiting forever. The awkward waitress then shows and finally takes our drink order and food order because we had plenty of time to decide on what to eat. You would think they would give us two waiters/waitresses because of the big group. She brings the drinks out one or two at a time. Over at least a 20 min period. Never seen anything like it. Not to mention the weakest cocktails I have ever drank. Some of us got a sangria pitcher, tasted great but it was definitely lacking the alcohol. Food comes out about 40 min later. Everyone liked there food but it was not that spectacular. Typical Portuguese food, plenty of other places in Fall River or New Bedford that offer MUCH better customer service than this place. Even when it came time to ask for the check, we had to ask at least 3 times for it and waited another half hour. The worst part about the experience is the manager/ owner showed no care at all. Didn't comp a thing when the bill came out or even apologize for the wait. We where there for 2.5 hours longest dining experience of my life. And of course the tip was included so we couldn't even decide what to leave for the horrendous service. Trust me if you want at least decent service don't come here!!! read more

Sagres is by far the best Portuguese restaurant I have been to so far! My boyfriend and I have been here at least once a month for the last year and I must say we are never disappointed! The food is excellent and so is the service! We have always been very pleased with the wait staff and they are always very accommodating! If you haven't tried it it's a must! On the weekends it's very busy. We went on a Friday night and the wait was an hr. We sat at the bar hoping to get served there. There were 2 bartenders. The one on our side had a fake personality. She also didn't get our drinks in a timely manner. I did realize she was very busy, but when you acknowledge someone you can at least offer them water and say I'll be right with you. She got two regulars their drinks before ours when we arrived before them. That wasn't right. Anyway to get to their food. I had the steak with mushroom cream sauce. The broccoli had no flavor at all. The steak was good. My fiance' had the pork and little necks which wasn't tasty. He's had the dish many times at other places, and said he was disappointed. He also used to work as a cook, so he knows a good meal when he tastes one. The place itself is very pretty since they've remodeled. That was my first time in there since the change. We had a nice white wine and some delicious clams while we waited for the 4th member of our party to arrive. A decent wine list and fantastic food made the rest of the evening a delight. The Host doesn't know what he's doing. We had reservations for 6. Nothing was set up. Then he puts the table together slowly and kind of not knowing what he's doing. We overheard him saying after that " we need to get them out of here" We were rushed and constant eyes on the table waiting for us to be done...In and out fast to get the cash registers ringing. Woah, fantastic dining place. It was crazy busy on a Saturday evening so I was happy my boyfriend and I decided to make a reservation. At 730 didn't seem like you could just stroll in and be seated without one. The host (but manager i think) didn't smile that much, but got stuff done. I saw him making sure waiters were attentive to tables and clearing so the next tables could sit. Our waiter, Joe, was great! He was on the ball even though it looked like he had a thousand things going on. Anytime I asked for something, which I did a few times, he was on it. And the foooooood!! We started with the little neck clams which were very tasty. For dinner got the paelha and the pork with liver. Both portions were huge!!!! And so tasty. I've never had pork cooked so tasty before. The paella was bomb too. There were two huge lobster claws, a ton of fish, including scallops and shrimps. They definitely didn't skimp on anything and so well priced. Sagres was heavily damaged by a fire in an upstairs apartment in 2013. The building has been demolished. As of the writing on Dec. 1, 2013, the owners say they are 90 percent sure they will rebuild on the same parcel on Columbia Street. read more

Tried the newly rebuilt Sagres Restaurant on Columbia Street last night and loved it!! They have a beautiful long bar that seats about 20 people with murals of Lisbon, Portugal on the walls. Very pretty modern décor. The restaurant was crowded by 7:00 on a Thursday so either make reservations or get there early. We had the Shrimp on a Skewer (Camarao no Espeto) and the Seafood Bouillabaisse (Caldeira a Portuguesa) and both were absolutely delicious. The servers at the bar were friendly and attentive. A great dining experience all around. We will definitely be back. read more

They're back! And thank God they are! The new building is very pretty. Very different from the old Sagres but very pretty. The new building is noisier. We went opening week and a few times after that and every time they have been slammed. The wait has been crazy long but worth it. The bar is smallish but, the waiting area is bigger which is nice. The food is still fabulous. The shrimp in a picante sauce is delicious and the calde verde is true comfort food. Beef is wonderful, seasoned and cooked correctly. The fish Portuguesa is moist and flavored with an onion tomato sauce. Awesome! The sangria is now made at the bar and not by each individual waiter and is a a bit different. Good, but not as good. A new dessert is on the menu, passion fruit pudding and it is really good! The flan here is my favorite. Tastes like my grandmother made it! If you are looking for authentic Portuguese American food, this is the best in the area. Sooo glad they are back and still fabulous. read more

One of my favorite restaurants in Fall River. After the remodel, this place looks beautiful, dining is dim and intimate, which makes this place feel much more expensive than it actually is. We are lucky to live very close to Fall River so it's an easy jaunt to Sagres. Over the years we have dined at this or that Portuguese restaurant but none compares to Sagres. For a group it's better to make a reservation as it gets packed, especially on the week end. We think the food is just fantastic. The appetiser Shrimp Mozambique is the stuff of dreams. I could drink bowls of the sauce for breakfast. The littlenecks with garlic and oil come a close second. The service is very good. we never get ignored or forgotten here. The owner is a super guy who works very hard to keep things going smooth. It's our fave! read more

My family and I have been many times over the years and can't wait for it to re open. The food is consistently good! Always seasoned perfectly. I was never a seafood fan and my father in law (100% Portuguese) insisted I try the Clams cooked a white wine and garlic broth. It was unbelievable. I now order them every time we visit. I also highly recommend the prime rib. That too is very good! You might want to go hungry to be able to finish it. You'll more than likely have to bring some home...a lot to finish. read more

I'm so sad to give this place 2 stars . After they reopened you can tell its not the same and will never be the same. A complete overhaul of their food for the worse. Shrimp Mozambique used to be so good from this place but sadly I must say, now it's not even close to what it used to be. Different chefs? I don't know but it was gross I wouldn't even give it to my dog to eat it was that bad including my steak sandwich which was pink, full of fat and nerves and I asked for well done. I give 2 stars because I like their fries and rice rest is no good. Hurts me to give 2 stars because I grew up down the street and would eat here all the time but I will never return to Sagres and pains me to say that. Honestly it's a whole different staff and they seem like they just don't care anymore like they gave up and mind you they just reopened! If this was the old Sagres hands down 5 stars this place was the best. They should get back to basics, to me they are trying to be too fancy, it's not working. If they got back to the way they were I would definitely go back but until then I'll eat elsewhere. read more

Tried Sagres last night (Sunday). We called ahead to put our name in for a seating but they told us there wasn't a wait, which when we got there we were seated within 3 minutes. Atmosphere was very nice, clean and tastefully decorated. Portuguese rolls were brought over right away and our server was here within 5 minutes. We order the verde soup which we were then told was sold out so we had the Portuguese soup which was more creamy noodles than anything else, wouldn't recommend it. I had the special which was the cherry glazed duck, cooked medium. The presentation was nice but the duck was dry and the mashed potatoes were too creamy. I wouldn't recommend it. We also ordered the seafood piaya which was not that great. The shrimp were dry and overlooked just like all the chicken. Very little chorice and lacking flavor. We barely ate half of our dinners. The server wrapped our dinners without asking how the meals were or noticing he was wrapping whole dinners. I probably wouldn't have even told him how bad they were. We skipped dessert and coffee since nothing so far had impressed us. Bill was $53 which I would have thought food was good, but unfortunately it wasn't. I wished we liked it and would return, but we won't. read more

Horrible steak & service with a reservations. Got there early went to bar had a drink and waited had to walk back to the front entrance at our reservation time to watch the owner tell a group of 4 that he doesn't know what people are thinking coming in here at 8 and thinking that they will be seated. He than sat a couple of 2 with out reservations, and another couple at the pub table before asking me what I was waiting for. I responded we had reservations for 8 for 2 people. He sat me down alone as my boyfriend was outside smoking. We were served day old bread (definitely not from today as the bakery they use is local and we get bread there and know what the fresh bread taste like) I asked for a steak to be medium and got a burnt & chewy steak I took one bite and couldn't even swallow it or chew it and I ended up spitting it on my side plate and I cut it in half asked the waitress if this is what they consider medium. The waitress never picked up my side plate which stayed with what I chewed in front of us the rest of the time. I then asked for a class of water and tooth picks to take the burnt steak out of my teeth. It took her 12 minutes to come back with it.She took my over cooked steak back and brought me another steak that I cut in half it was completely raw I did not touch it other to cut it.When leaving the owner Victor asked me why everything was bad I told him that my steak was burnt then raw the waitress took to long for everything, he knew my boyfriend and apologized and said that next time it was on him if we wanted to come back I. I told him it was the worst food and experience. I went on about how bad it was and told him that I was not interested in coming back (I was definitely disappointed, upset and ready to go) due to this horrible experience I forgot my cluth at the table. When I got home we had to go back to get it. When I went in and asked to see if they could check if i left it the owner Victor gave it to me as I was leaving he said everything better now. I said not really where he followed me to the main entrance and told me that he has the judges, majors and even patriots go there and that it is the best restaurant in the area and I am the only one who has complained. He also told me that the gentleman next to me told him that I was upset all night. My response the food and service sucked of course I was upset and then he threatened me and said he could call this so called gentleman and could ask him why I was yelling at my boyfriend all night. Which I was complaining to him because my boyfriend ate while I watched him, then I got my plate my boyfriend was already done eating and my food for the 2nd time was horrible. No yelling here because you definitely would of known if I was yelling. He threatened me by telling me that he could find out everything and anything about me if he wanted to. I was not nice then and started being Portuguese. As I left and got in the car I told my boyfriend what he said. My boyfriend went in with me and of course he was so apologetic told me to be quiet so he could tell him what was not necessary all true and failed to tell him alot. He apologized several times to my boyfriend. Told him I never thanked him for getting my cluth (not that I got the chance since he followed me out to the entrance to de-womanize me as my man was not around) and so I repeated everything about the judge, patriots the people sitting next to us and how he threatened to find out everything about me and cause me trouble.What he told me when my boyfriend was not what he said to me and he said things just different. He turned to the fact that I left my purse there and was only yelling at him. No. No. No. I asked the waitress nicely if she could check told her the size and color. He went to get it and handed it to me when I had my hand on the door he asked me is everything better now and I said not really. He then followed me to the entrance and began yelling and going on about the many people, and how only I dont like it there and how he can ruin me. This man does not like women. Do not go there poor service and bad food. But dont worry he will apologize if a man is beside you and he will shake his hand and even tell you to come back at his cost. But if your man is not on your arm you are not worthy customer he will also shake your mans hand and make you feel like your at fault for his restaurants poor service, bad food and his poor management and manners to women in general. read more

Good food, bad service. Sat at the bar with only 4 other patrons & the bartender didn't greet us for at least 10 minutes as she was too busy socializing with 2 gentlemen at the bar who then became honary when we interjected for service. The server was no better as he came to the table 4 times. Once for drinks, then to bring appetizers, to bring entrees & then drop off the check. He never came back to check on us or to refresh our drinks. My steak was good, but overdone. My table mates also got steak, one cooked perfectly & the other under done. I was pretty disappointed as I know they had a great reputation before the fire that closed them down for a while. I won't rush back as there are plenty of fantastic Portuguese restaurants in the Fall River/New Bedford area that offer better service for a better value. Yes there prices have gone up.
