I took my mountain bike in for a Spring check-up and new cables. First time out, it shifted erratically and then the chain broke. When I took it in, they found out a problem with the front derailleur that they had overlooked even though they installed a new cable on it. Luckily I stayed close to home for the first ride; could have left me stuck miles out on some forest trail. read more

Gosh, I feel bad writing this because I never write bad reviews, but I gotta say I had an unpleasant experience with Sagebrush Cycles and won't be back again, especially with all the other bike shops to choose from in Bend. I chose to go here simply because I wanted to use their half off coupon from the Smart Shopper mailer. I took my bike in to get a tune up and was quoted $60 after they took about five minutes of looking over it and inspecting it. I was told it would be ready in a week. Ten days later I received a call it was ready, and went into pick it up. I was surprised when the technician handed me my bike and walked away without a word. Is it because I'm a woman or that my bike isn't super fancy that you can't talk to me about my bike? In all other bike shops I've been to over the last 20 years, the techs take the time to explain any work that's been done, comment on the overall condition and/or parts and maybe even make suggestions. I was even more surprised when the gentleman taking payment at the counter took my 50% off coupon and told me it was $50! Maybe I would feel better knowing my bike had $100 worth of work done to it if I knew what work had actually been done? Or did they just upcharge me because I had the coupon? I'll never know because I won't be going back. read more

Nicest bike shop staff ever!!! I came into Bend for a race and the employees bent over back to help me out with all the little things needed. CO2 cartridges, spare chain link. Extra Gu. They set up my tires with the proper air pressure for Bend single track. But the reason they deserve my 5 stars is that after my race, I came back to a closed shop just to wash down my bike at their wash hose station. There I met one of the mechanics, Gary, who went out of his way to open up the shop to get various brushes and Simple Green and he and I cleaned my beat up bike SHINY and ready to pack up back to San Diego!!! Bought a bike for 600 and had two basic repairs that exceeded the original cost. Both repair estimates were more than doubled and I couldn't figure out why only to hear the "mechanic" bad mouth my bf as he left the shop. Gary may have conned a trampoline company successfully but robbing paying costumers in town should be considered taboo. I came into Sagebrush because they carry Canondale and my rear wheel free-wheeler had broken. The service I got was superb. The conversation clarified my needs and budget. It turned out they had a slightly used set which fit my bike, a huge upgrade from my original. The price was so amazing that I could hardly believe it, plus the service to put both new wheels on was minimal. Today I had a great 26-mile ride in LaPine and couldn't be happier. read more

I walked into this bike shop knowing exactly which bike I wanted in which size. All I really wanted was to buy the bike for a reasonable price from a local bike shop that would properly fit the bike to my body and service it for me when needed. I knew I could get it significantly cheaper in Eugene or Portland, but supporting local business is important to me so I chose Sagebrush Cycles which is the only bike store in Bend that carries the brand I wanted. James Gritters, owner of Sagebrush Cycles came over to help me when I walked into the store. I told him the make and model of bike I wanted and the size. He had none in stock but really tried to talk me out of the 21" size I requested saying he'd sold those bikes for 5 years and knew the 19" would fit me better. I had really done my research about size and told him what I knew, but he kept telling me the 21" would be too tall for me. I finally agreed to try the 19" as he seemed so positive that was the size I needed, even without measuring me. I put a deposit on the 19" bike and went home. I started to think more about it and realized I'd been persuaded to buy something I didn't want. I contacted James by email and had to argue my case pretty strongly in several emails but finally he agreed to order me a 21". When the 21" arrived I went to ride it and had over 2" of clearance over the top bar which was perfect and certainly none too big. The 19" size would have been very cramped for me. He took my money but when I asked about getting the bike "fit" to me he looked at me like I was crazy. I have very long arms and legs so I told him I wanted a pro to look at the fit and body geometry and see if I could use different handlebars to stretch out a bit so I wouldn't end up cramped on the bike. I was also curious whether different crank arms could give my long legs more stretch without raising the seat higher. I was ready to spend money on these components...I just wanted someone with some knowledge to take the time with me to make sure I got a great fit. Isn't that what a local bike shop is for? Instead, James spent 2 minutes looking at seat height and said I'd just have to ride around a while to see if I wanted a different handlebars. I felt like just another customer to make a quick buck on with no attention to my needs and questions. I had to fight to get the bike I needed and then was rushed out the door, probably because James was embarrassed he'd tried so hard to sell me the 19" when it was obvious the 21" was right for me. What disappoints me the most about my experience at Sagebrush Cycles is that I spent the extra money and waited for a bike I could have bought from a Eugene bike shop for $120 cheaper on sale at the time. I gave a local bike shop my business and was treated like another number. If you're considering giving Sagebrush Cycles your business, I suggest giving them a chance to really earn your business and not just sell you a bike for a quick buck. I've used Sagebrush for quite a few years and have some good experiences, but a few more bad than good. They have tuned up my bike and every summer they box it up to send it to Iowa so I can ride Ragbrai. This year when I called to get it sent, I had a tough time communicated that, yes, I need my bike as long as possible before the ride. The guy who answered the phone (Tony), wanted to have me bring it in as early as July 1st to get it packed by July 13th. I don't think a profession racer would have to explain the need to keep their bike for training, but for just a regular person like me, that seemed to be something that was a pain for them. I had asked about the price at my last tune-up and they have a roundtrip deal. When asked if I would be able to get this, the manage got on the phone and basically made me feel like a fool for asking for such a thing. I was told that due to raising costs and inflation they could do it this year, but not next. Sorry people, maybe tell me that at the tune-up a month ago when I asked. I immediately called another bike shop in town that was able to painlessly schedule a bike packing and didn't make me feel like I was a huge inconvenience trying to be their customer. As a woman, most bike stores are not the most welcoming place and Sagebrush is doing a good job keeping up that tradition. read more

Would not recommend this Bike Shop. Went in for a brake service and tire repair. I had also paid to convert my wheels to a tubeless set up. After a couple months of riding I experienced a flat tire. After a field repair I discovered that the shop had left the tubes in and just added tubeless sealant. Went back to the shop to discuss and was basically berated by the tech. Plenty of other bike shops in town with a higher ethical standard. read more

I'm in Bend from Oakland with a group of girlfriends from Hood River who ride mountain bikes on the regular. This is my first time mountain biking and the fellas (Travis, Alex and others I don't know their names) at Sagebush totally took care of me and hooked me up with a rental bike that made my first time a great time! The space is clean and inviting. The shop pooch (who's name I don't know) is a sweetie. All the fellas were super helpful and made this first timer feel very comfortable. I went to sagebrush to demo a Pivot Mach429 while deciding on which full suspension bike to buy. Drew helped me out, explained the bikes and set me up for a demo ride. I loved the bike but was a bit Leary because of the other bad reviews so I came in at a later date and talked with James the owner who has a great passion for the bikes he sells and his customers. James and Drew and the team made it a great buying experience and made buying a new bike fun and easy and I feel fully supported from this shop for my future needs. I ended up with a Mach429 Trail and had them custom order the frame and build the bike to my specs. We had a slight mix up with the frame colors but Sagebrush instantly made it right and got me exactly what I wanted. During the initial bike setup James took time to personally discuss how to setup the suspension, adjusted the bike and told me to come back anytime if I need help. Wow! Snobbery is alive and well in Bend. We were visiting from Western Oregon. My husband stopped in to hopefully pick up some stickers for his Jeep and a water bottle for riding. There were several employees in the shop. Not one acknowledged his existence. No big deal, right? But when he chose a water bottle and stood at the counter, one would assume an associate would take notice. He stood there a few minutes, when another customer entered the shop and was immediately asked what he needed. Ageism? (husband is 58) Full-of-ourselves-ism? Who knows? I have been to quite a few bike shops in my day and Sagebrush is hands down the BEST bike shop I have ever been to. All the dudes who work there are friendly, knowledgeable and skilled. And the service is the quickest I've experienced in Bend. They also offer free shuttles on Wednesday nights; and ladies nights on Tuesday which are both super fun. I have had the opportunity to demo the Pivot Mach 4 from Sagebrush and it is the sickest bike. I highly recommend checking out the Pivots at Sagebrush if you are in the market for a new mountain bike. Definitely go talk to the dudes at Sagebrush for all your cycling needs. Bike to a 1 x 11 and he did exactly what he said he would do, and more. The work was done professionally and without the almost expected "Bike Shop" attitude that sometimes comes along for the ride.
