Plant Bingo at Sage Kitchen was a fun evening overall. Check-in was smooth, and the staff did a great job explaining how the game worked and what to expect before everything got started. The game itself was lively, well-paced, and everyone seemed to have a great time. The patio where the event was held is beautiful, and it was spacious enough for the crowd. The only downside to the seating was that some guests ended up behind a wall where they could hear the caller but couldn't actually see her or the plants being awarded. One suggestion that I think would make the event even better is the prize structure. When there are ties, the winners have to play rock-paper-scissors to determine who gets the plant. While that's part of the fun, I felt bad for the people who won their bingo card but ultimately went home with a donated T-shirt, soil, or plant food instead of a plant. Even a small, inexpensive plant for the runner-up would make the experience feel more rewarding, especially since the event is centered around plants. The food and service were a bit of a mixed experience. I ordered the California Club with sweet potato fries, and it was delicious. However, the menu was more limited than expected, and we were told some of the regular menu items (including the tacos!) weren't available during the event. Our server was genuinely pleasant and did the best she could, but she appeared to be covering more tables than one person reasonably should. Service was slow, and we had to remind her about our drinks after our food had already arrived. It felt more like a staffing issue than a service issue. One thing I didn't care for was the payment process. We were only brought a credit card slip with the total to add a tip and sign after our card had already been charged. We had to specifically ask for an itemized receipt to review the charges. I would have preferred the opportunity to see the bill before my card was run or at least have the option to use a different payment method. The event advertising was also a little misleading. The description said, "Join us for 20 rounds of bingo, raffle entries, plant prizes, tacos & drinks!" Based on that wording, it certainly sounded like tacos and non-alcoholic beverages were included with the ticket price. Instead, everything had to be purchased separately, and we were told the tacos (which are on the regular restaurant menu) weren't even available during the event due to the limited event menu. Clarifying that food and drinks are available for purchase would help set better expectations. Despite those issues, we genuinely enjoyed ourselves. I was fortunate enough to win one of the plants, and it's beautiful. My suggestions are simply things I think would make an already fun event even better for everyone. The energy of Plant Bingo, the beautiful patio, the organized check-in, and the friendly atmosphere made for an enjoyable evening, and with a few improvements to the prize distribution, staffing, payment process, and event advertising, it could easily become an even better experience. read more

I was super excited to take my family as i've seen it on TikTok so many times recommending how it's a great place to take your toddlers! I'll say the overall experience was okay. I do like how there are plenty of tables and chairs to sit and watch your kiddos on the playground. I'll say it's more suitable for older (or taller) kids like maybe age 5 and up. The food overall was meh. My husband ordered the ruben sandwich with the fried mac n cheese balls and I ordered the fried pickles, fries, and garlic burger. Honestly, it just kinda lacked flavor. I recently attended plant bingo hosted at Sage Kitchen located inside the Anderson garden Center.  I was promptly greeted and directed to the check-in table. The check-in process was seamless; my group received our bingo cards and the flyer outlining the 20 game plays, and we appreciated the flexibility of the indoor and outdoor seating. The service was both friendly and efficient. We were required to start a tab; I was unsure if this is standard policy or specific to the event, but either way it worked out well. I ordered the Baja bowl: grilled chicken, black beans, corn, cheddar cheese, tomatoes, and avocado served on cilantro-lime rice topped with tortilla strips and Aji Verde sauce. My bowl was delicious, fresh and portioned just right. The plant selections for the prizes were great, I actually won a Pothos Yellow Flame. I do have two suggestions: 1. Consider having extra plant prizes available for tie-breaking rounds instead of playing rock-paper-scissors. If you win you deserve a plant. 2. It would be helpful if guests were provided with a copy of their bill to verify for accuracy before their card is charged and the tab is closed. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the meal and the event. I go to Anderson's a decent amount considering my love for plants, but this is my first time stopping into Sage Kitchen. It has been on my list for a very long time, especially since they serve beer and have a nice outdoor seating area among the foliage. My fiancé and I ordered a wrap and bowl, and I wasn't particularly pleased with the expense, but I wanted to give it a try. Both items were just okay - we weren't blown away. The bowl was lacking in flavor somewhere, which was perhaps lime or a different type of sauce? The portion of the bowl was small for the price. The wrap's portion was more price-worthy, but still just seemed like something to eat, not something to savor. I was hoping for more since the indoor and outdoor seating was nice. I do like that you order right at the dining entrance and they bring your meals to your table. I was here for the Plant Bingo event , and had the opportunity to get some dinner while here. The line was long, but to be expected due the event. But the staff moved the line pretty quick and the food came out in a decent time. We were able to eat before playing which worked out well and I had to focus on my serious bingo playing. HAHA. I opted for the sandpiper bowl. The grilled chicken was amazing. It had great flavor and the charred marks were what really did it for me. It added to the flavor! I ate all that tasty chicken. My friend loved her food as well. Their burgers looked good, and the buns looked so scrumptious. The menu is a decent size which a lot of great offerings. I could use a little more dessert options. but it was not a deal breaker. Oooo Also can we get on the mocktail train. I noticed there are more and more people looking for mocktails including the DDs. Wow this place has really gone down hill. So the first few times I've been here it was great, The food was amazing, my kids had a blast, they got to play and eat.... Now it's just a dump. The food yesterday (Sunday the 28th) was awful. My bowl was literally disgusting and it was hard to power through and finish it but I got home and had to wipe the chicken so I could at least eat that. It's almost like they dumped the sauce on the bowl by accident because the cap came off mid drizzle, my son's chicken tenders were burnt and the fries were ice cold, like how is that even possible. What a beautiful restaurant in the back of the Anderson store. Met up with a bunch of friends and their families to have a mini reunion since we are from out of town and really enjoyed our lunch. The kids enjoyed the play area so much while the adults ate and watched them from afar. The weather was a bit chilly but still nice to sit outside to enjoy some sun. Great food in a quiet setting! The staff was very friendly and accommodating. We ordered the flash-fried Brussels sprouts, half chicken salad croissant and half Everything salad, and California enchilada and sweet potato fries, and agave lemonade mixed with the unsweetened iced tea. I am reviewing sage kitchen separately from Anderson's. Farm to table is a total joke. I would love to know how much of their food comes from Hampton roads or even a farm. I'd bet the only thing being source local is the labeled local greens. Please owner respond and tell me what on your menu is "farm to table". Most of the menu is sandwiches and burgers. Not a single item on the menu has impressed me and most disappointed. The only thing I order is the BLT because that is hard to mess up. The only reason to come here is to let the children while you hang out. Which brings me to another huge issue. They only have ranch, honey mustard and ketchup even though the only things my kids will eat on the kids menu is chicken tenders. Which arrive with ranch unless requested otherwise. My so even says the burger "sucks" and he is 7. Who eats ranch on chicken tenders. Not a bad place to visit if you like plants and yuppie beach crap but the food sucks. read more

Went here for the first time on a Friday night and it was pretty busy. We mainly came for the play area and the food so I can't speak too much on the shopping/garden aspects of it. I love how this place is unique. You can't find many places where you can enjoy food while your kids play other than at a fast food restaurant or in the comfort of your own home. This place makes it easy for adults to enjoy a meal while their kids burn off some energy. The only thing about this place is that the food is wayyyy overpriced and it took forever to come out. Which I understand because when we were there, there were only 2 chefs in the kitchen and 2 waitresses. Other than that, this is a super chill place. I think I have found my new favorite lunch/dinner spot!! First off I don't think I have ever seen a more adorable and pretty place to eat! I love the outside area for the kiddos to play and enjoy. Great place for families! I love the concept and we enjoyed our time. You order at the counter and then get a number and take a seat. The kitchen was backed up so they give you a buzzer and when it goes off (about 20 min) you can order food. We ordered apps and entrees at the same time and it all came out at the same time. If you want them separate be sure to order separately. The food was good but I felt it was overpriced for what it is. I forgot to get pics but I got the Jammy Patty Melt with fries. The sandwich was good but I didn't love it. The fries weren't fully cooked but they replaced them and they were much better. I got the old fashioned and I'd order it again. If I'm at a restaurant I always prefer a glass for my drink. The other drinks seemed to all come in disposable cups. However, disposable cups are fitting for the setting. We really love Sage Kitchen, and have been coming here for the last two years whenever we're in the VB area. The food is consistently good and there's a lot to choose from; it's also very family friendly which we love for our two young children. My only complaint is that the prices are a little high but it's worth it for what you're getting which is quality food in a cozy atmosphere (with a playground in the back to boot!). For the price and experience, it was completely not worth it. All of the menu items are very basic and any add ons, even things like lettuce for their $14 burger, costs extra. On this particular day, staff was preparing for a wedding reception so we ordered at the counter and waited for our food to come to our table. Everything else was self served like sauce and drinks (water, tea, pink lemonade). We got a sandwich and chicken tenders early in the morning bc they didn't actually have breakfast items and it ended up being almost $40 for whatever reason! I wanted fried pickles (which was a $2 up charge) and I only got two, and they were tiny and completely hard. Overall, I think the whole group just wished we went somewhere else for brunch because we weren't expecting there to be a limited menu and limited staff. I think based off pictures of food they serve online, it just missed our expectations. Let me preface this with the fact that I spent 20 years in the restaurant business. This food is good and the price for good quality food is going to be high. This is a farm (greenhouse) to table concept, so no surprises there, but the prices align with venues that employ servers (more on that later) and that is not the way this place works. Ambiance-family friendly outdoor seating with play areas for those families with kids. Seems clean... WHAT I HATED....not the service but the SERVICE MODEL this place settled on. Let me describe it.... When you arrive you enter through the store and come to a table where a "hostess" tells you that you must order food before getting a table outside. We were meeting another couple and they were arriving later. Politeness would require we order and eat together. I informed her that we were going to wait to order took a menu and preceded outside. 2 things, either she has not been properly trained OR this is the policy she is required to enforce. Either way, it nearly caused us to leave. I would rescript this interaction like this, "Thanks for trying us out! We don't have table service but you can order alcoholic beverages here and soft drinks here. When you are ready to order food, and our food is great, come back in. You can leave your tab open or close it after each order. A "runner" will bring you order to you so you don't have to wait for your order to be prepared. " The whole system is weird and off-putting. Where can you buy a cocktail-not at the bar that is manned on the patio apparently, where does silverware come from? Why are my tip choices 18-25% if there is no service? Only two positives were the chef and a very young blond boy who was a "busser". He was kind and tried to be helpful. The whole experience could be so much better. read more
