Stopped here for lunch and the service was absolutely horrible. I waited and waited for a server while others continually went to nearby tables and skipped mine. Eventually, one server told me someone would be right with me, but no one showed up for another five minutes. I just sat there awkwardly waiting. When I finally was able to order, I got a mimosa that was subpar and tasted more like syrup. The restaurant itself did look nice. I ordered the pick two. It wasn't to write home about. First time coming here. Arrived in around 11:40 for a to go order of two wraps and was told it would be about 10-15 minutes. Order was forgotten about and never made. Ended up waiting almost an hour for them. I do not recommend you come here for a to go order unless you want to waste your afternoon not having lunch. Staff was friendly and assure food would be ready soon several times, to no avail. Food was decent, not worth the headache of a 50 minute wait. Seems like a cool spot if you are dining in. It took a while for me to discover this restaurant and I don't know why. I love this place!! It has such a cute vibe and I love looking at their store for cute unique presents and their desserts and sweets. We've gone here for both lunch and dinner date nights. The food is good and there's a lot to choose from on the menu. The staff is welcoming, friendly and attentive. I noticed that they also have meals to go ready in their fridge/freezer section once you walk in. Went here for a Birthday dinner and actually never heard of this place until we went. It's a little restaurant that's tucked into a strip mall and has a little store attached to it. The ambiance was cute and def had like a little romantic vibe to it. Really liked the tables with the booths and the hanging lights outside. Inside there was low lighting and it wasn't crowded on a Saturday night and was quite. I'm not too sure what happened with the service but we were a table of 7, and there were three couples, and the waitress asked the first two couples what the wanted for drinks and an appetizer and forgot to ask us. When the drinks came and the drinks came some time after we ordered them, we put in for our appetizer and she told us it won't be there till the main order comes. With several appetizers ordered we waited and waited some more. Scallops, mushroom flatbread, fried green tomatoes, and chicken pesto pizza. The appetizers definitely took some time to arrive. But they tasted good! The tomatoes had a nice crunch and a spiced Mayo on the top. The mushroom flatbread was good and had fat sliced it mushrooms on it and red onions and was hot and cheesy, the pesto chicken pizza was the best tasting thing there from the night with sun dried tomatoes, arugula, and a light pesto taste. The scallops there were good, and not overcooked. After we ate the appetizers and waited and waited and then complimentary little bread squares came. We ate them and waited some more for our food. It arrived and the bay bistro burger was ordered a medium doneness and it was well done and not seasoned at all. Was supposed to have portobello mushrooms and Brie on it and didn't. I just ate it cause we were coming up on two hours in to waiting there and I was hungry and not wanting to wait a long while for the right order. The pasta was pretty good, and the seafood was decent. Another round of drinks were ordered but everyone came but my husbands and he waited and waited and asked the waitress and she said she forgot and he said to just forget it. Just went last week. Had been before but a long time ago. Went with our lunch group of 12 people. Everyone loved it. Most of us got sandwiches or salads or pick two. My wife wanted to try Back Bay Gourmet, so I obliged and upon entering I saw a beautiful array of tasteful Christmas decorations. The tables and chairs looked luxurious. Most of the customers were women and this looked like the perfect ladies lunch establishment. I have to say at the outset that the service was impeccable and even had a nice homey feel to it. I sincerely wish I could say something good about the food but alas, I cannot. With all this charm and attention to detail, they should've put the same effort into the food. We both tried the soup and sandwich. I ordered the lobster bisque and the turkey cranberry panini. My wife got the Alpine sandwich with the same lobster bisque. We both agreed that the lobster bisque was unrecognizable. There was no trace of lobster and instead, it tasted strongly of sweet red peppers. So, please! Don't call it lobster bisque. The turkey panini had a single slice of turkey plus some kind of mysterious red "berry" jam which they called cranberries. The sandwich was dry and almost inedible. The Alpine sandwich was smoked turkey, Swiss cheese, and a special sauce on French bread. Normally my wife and I share our selections but again this was skimpy and unappetizing. I know my wife will return here because it is a beautiful setting. We both would suggest that you skip the soup and sandwich. The salads looked good, but I can't vouch for them at this point. High class and always great food and drink. This has always been my niece's favorite place to come for lunch. Nice open area with beautiful chandeliers and elegant decor. The Staff have always been friendly and always keeping your glass filled. We can never leave without going over to get something to satisfy a sweet tooth. They have it all . I am literally in the restaurant as I write this. It's a real time review....11:18 am. It's a very nice place for lunch or dinner. It's a subdued, quiet environment and would be great for a ladies luncheon. I just got my food at 11:19....it came out very quick. I got the BLT and Thai salad. But more about the food later. They have a little shop attached with unique and cute gifts such as coffee mugs, cocktail napkins, plates etc. They have a small bar but I wonder if it's only open at night. They also have a gourmet To go menu which are ready made meals for families. The menu has everything on it from lasagna, pork chops, chicken enchiladas and Sheppard pie. It looks like they have some outside tables. There is plenty of parking since it's in a strip mall. If you aren't familiar with the area it can be hard to find but only because this area is so built up now. Sophia was my waitress and was very nice. Everything was prompt and she remembered no ice in my water. It's now 11:39 and I have finished, my plates cleared and Sophia brought me my check. Now the food....the salad was delicious. And a nice size. Dressing was on the side which I love. Very fresh and the dressing was delicious. The BLT was ok. Nothing special but the bacon was nice and crispy which I love. One tomato and some iceberg. Not impressive. I could see my mother coming here with her friends. I would come here for dinner but I personally prefer a more casual environment for lunch. I have been going to this restraunt for years and always our "go to" place. Well I guess that is over. Ordered take out last night and it was horrible. What happened to the fried green tomatoes ?? They looked like 3 pieces of burnt tomatoes with cheese just plopped in a container and were horrible. They no longer have Paella even though on menu on website. Hubby ordered shrimp and sausage entre instead,ended up making him sick and not everything was in order. If someone is spending over $70.00 for a meal do better!! They were full but not super busy. I ordered the alpine half sandwich and soup, my son ordered the La playa Cuban sandwich. 30 minutes later we still haven't gotten our food, no one checked on us. A couple who was sat on the table that was still being cleaned when we sat and ordered our food Got their food before us!!!! I had lunch here with 3 friends Friday Feb 24th. One friend ate there earlier in the week and recommended it to us. Each of us drove 30 minutes to get there and the ride was well worth it. I had the 1/2 sandwich -chicken salad, and small salad-Monticello. They were both delicious. The candied walnuts and cranberries added such a nice element to the lettuces. The iced tea was very good and our waitress brought us a carafe of unsweetened tea for refills. The atmosphere was very elegant and comfortable. The dessert/candy displays were mouthwatering. We thought about adding dessert but understandably they were a little pricey. No fault of the establishment, just the economy. I have already recommended people to pay Back Bay a visit and I will be back. read more

Worst customer service I have ever received on my entire life!! Me and my daughter frequent Back Bay Gourmet almost weekly! I had never order to go before but for the first time we did and ordered for our whole family. The drive is 30 min and my 16 year old daughter went to pick up the order with my charge card. Let me add that I ordered with Brianna and she clearly read the order back to me even the special request for ranch dressing for the chips. An hour later when my daughter returned with the order it was missing her sandwich , chips, ranch and another order of bistro fries. I called and Brianna apologized and even said back without me telling her the chips and ranch and asked could we come back and I said yes my daughter would go and she said it would be ready when she arrived. When my daughter arrived after driving another 30min they told her we weren't charged for that sandwich and she had to pay for it. My daughter didn't have my charge card this time bc I was not told I wasn't charged for it. If I had been told my daughter spoke not have drove all the way back there and wasted her gas and another hour of her time. So my daughter had to pay with her debit card and was in tears actually with frustration. I called and asked to speak with a manager and someone named Marissa got on the phone. Up until this point I wasn't even aware that I hadn't been charged for the sandwich as my daughter was just upset that she had to pay and didn't understand why. So when I explain it all to Marissa she told me then that I wasn't charged but I told her that I would not have sent my daughter back on an hours driving to get a sandwich had Brianna told me that. I told Marissa that it was very poor customer service and that in total 2 hours of driving was done and it was there fault and shouldn't have charged her. Marisa claimed she was going to speak to the owner and after holding for 12 min Marisa's returned to the phone and said we have done all we can do and there's nothing more. She said she called me and left a message that the sandwich hadn't been charged which I didn't receive that message until after I hung up the phone with her. Even if I had received her message it was after my daughter was already on here way there. When I asked to speak to the owner that she supposed spoke to for the 12 minutes I was on hold she said the owner wasn't there. When I asked why she told me that's who she was going to speak to of the owner wasn't there she said she spoke with the executive chef who is the next in charge. I asked to speak to him and Marissa said that he wouldn't speak to me because they have done all they can do.... Well they didn't do all they could do!!! First when they read an order back to you they should put the order in. Second when someone called to say something is missing from and order they could tell the person it wasn't paid for instead of asking can you come back and saying it sooo be ready only to charge a someone's daughter who just drove another 30 min again to get it. And third when a loyal customer tells them how upsetting this was to send there daughter all the way there a second time for a total of 2 hours of driving for a sandwich they cold at the very least have offered to credit back the one sandwich!! We spent way more on gas, time driving and on the phone than that one sandwich. Not to mention they have lost customers who go weekly to eat there and I will be sure to tell everyone I know to never ever go to establishment that I used to love again!! I'll say that Brianna was nice even though she made the mistake of not getting the order right and for also not telling me I wasn't charged. But Marissa (the "manage") was horrible and completely mishandled the situation that could have easily been rectified!! read more

This is my favorite restaurant in all of Virginia Beach. I have lots of places I love to eat, but this is my favorite little neighborhood gem. It's cozy inside, there are cute little holiday-themed items for sale (think upscale Cracker Barrel), there is a bakery with cupcakes and truffles and goodies, service is good, and the menu is delicious. It is a great date night or girl's night out spot because it doesn't get overly loud or crowded and this is not a noisy bar. What more do you need? Plenty of parking as it is in a strip mall sandwiched between Home Goods and Office Max. It's clean inside with cozy booths and a nice big bar if you'd like to sit there as well. Service is normally pretty good - every now and then you'll get a new person who obviously needs more training - but it's mostly the same crew now of 10 or so people that have been there for a few years. My current favorite starters on the fall menu are the Charleston Fried Greens - fried green tomatoes with melted pimento cheese and jalapeño cream sauce and the Skillet Chips which our waitress recommended last night and said they were amazing and she was right. They're fresh house-made chips topped with a generous amount of bleu cheese and a creamy white wine mornay sauce. Holy cow I didn't know what I was missing in life before these babies came along! Their salmon entrees change but are always delicious and they have tons of fresh veggie sides that rotate based on seasonal availability - for now everything is butternut squash and such but in summer it's greens. Current favorite entree is the Shrimp and Butternut Squash Risotto which is a generous portion of risotto and about 6-7 large shrimp with red onion, kale and bacon with a broth sauce and grilled apple slices. It's perfection. Normally I love their Shrimp and Grits dish and the 1/2 pound Bistro Burger is the best burger I have ever had, hands down. Nothing else comes close and I like to travel and I like to eat. It's served with soft elegant Creme de Brie cheese, roasted mushrooms and caramelized onions on a soft buttered brioche bun with tomato and lettuce. Normally comes with their house fries and this amazing vinegar mayonnaise for dipping. There is not a single thing I would change about that dish. Ever. Desserts also rotate as they have a baker in-house who thinks of new concoctions on the regular - specialty cheesecakes like Boston Cream cheesecakes and maple cake as well as a rotating assortment of cupcakes, truffles, and other goodies. They have a really big coffee menu and specialty coffee drink menu and serve Segfredo coffee with house-made whipped cream that is amazing. They also serve Sunday brunch with a special menu - try the fresh sweet potato biscuits or a BLT! The breakfast potatoes and pancakes are amazing. But be warned, it gets really busy on Sundays for brunch. Lunch during the week is also popular and they have several sandwich/salad or sandwich/soup, soup/salad combos for the lunch crowd with daily soup specials made in-house. Almost everything they make is in-house and fresh and the menu changes with the seasons. They also have special entrees and appetizers from time to time so it never gets stale or old. Informed waitress this is my firs visit, and asked for recommendations. Ordered 1/2 chicken salad sandwich and 1/2 soup of the day. Mediterranean chicken. Coffee and water. First the positives. Water was great. Nicely decorated. Service ok, but rushed. Now the food! Coffee O L D! Waitress stated it was a fresh pot... NOT! It was at least 2 hours old. Fresh cup was good. Soup came out cold, asked to have warmed up. Came back warm, not hot! Sandwich on DRY toast, (I did ask to have bread toasted) 1/2 slice of tomato and a scoop of chicken salad. Super cute coffee shop that'll give you all of the happy endorphins! When you walk in they have a unique store that reminds you of a beach shop meets grandmas antiques. As you continue to venture through the very large store, there is a very modern well decorated dinning area. Aesthetically the restaurant could not be anymore appealing. I came in for a latte and conversation and was met with several options. The gourmet latte options were fabulous and very large. You definitely get your money's worth! So where do I start? The bagel with Lox and Cream cheese was absolutely delicious. While we were there the owner gave us a sample of their pastrami. This stuff is awesome. That's on my list for my next visit. She also explained their New York water system and gave us samples to try of VB and NY water to tell the difference. They have a policy they do not advertise that they cannot seat parties of 6 or more. When I called they said the policy was they could not make a reservation for more than 6 in case they were too busy because the kitchen cannot handle it, although I have been there many times and have seen every table in the restaurant filled. I went on a slow night and they refused to even serve us. This was for two birthdays and we brought our children. If I could give no stars....I would. Was in there yesterday with my wife trying to have a nice dinner. There was another older couple in there trying to talk to the manager about there bill or food not sure exactly what. The customer seemed calm and was trying to talk to her server or manager or whoever, but the bartender or guy behind the bar was extremely loud and rude to the customer and very threatening. I felt bad for the guy. I almost had to walk up there and let the bartender or barback, whatever he was to calm done, but could tell if i said something it wouldnt go well for him if he went off on me. Hopefully the manager that was there said something to him, he definately needs to be suspended or fired. I will not be back there with that kind of service and cruelty to others, and we frequent that place for years, not no more. read more

Two of my best friends from California came to visit me in Virginia Beach. I took them to Back Bay Gourmet for a late lunch. We had a wonderfully delicious meal. The lobster bisque was heavenly. 2 of us had blackened shrimp tacos which so delicious. The other friend had a meal of 2 items. She chose a salad and the lobster bisque soup. The service was excellent. The server had a great upbeat personality and checked with us periodically to see if we needed anything. After we ate we looked around the gift shop. The last time I went, my server knocked my mimosa flight into my lap; accidents happen, so I wasnt angry. I did have to purchase new pants and it wouldnt have stung as bad if they had at least discounted the meal for the cold, sticky inconvenience. Today I ordered via phone and attempted to prepay. They wouldnt let me (which was frustrating because it was a company meal -ie: company card). I showed up with the card info and they made me leave to go get a physical card. Update your systems or let people know ahead that you choose not to manually enter payment. I spent $40 and two car rides for two meals. I asked for mustard and was told the chef can put some in a cup in the bag. Cool, except there were no utensils. This experience wasnt worth $40 read more

Stopped in for a quick lunch at this coffee and wine bar, bakery, deli and culinary store all in one. I browsed the baked creations and checked out the retail store while waiting for my meal. As I slowly walked across the beautiful hardwood floors, perusing each item chosen with the culinary connoisseur in mind, I enjoyed stumbling upon purse-sized Poo-pourri sprays with names like Call of the Wild, and Deja Poo. Of course what gourmand doesn't appreciate a decent Poo-pourri spray? Your choice of either 2 ounces, good for up to 100 uses, or 4 ounces, good for up to 200 uses. Anyway, I snapped photos to share on Yelp and then returned to my table where my Monticello salad and Chipotle aioli with sweet potato fries were waiting for me. Outstanding. I loved the Chipotle aioli and barely even missed my favorite honey butter. This is a huge serving of sweet potato fries and, as stated on the menu, it truly is meant for sharing. The Monticello Salad included mixed greens, dried cranberries, apples, walnuts and bleu cheese crumbles with a balsamic vinaigrette. Tasty. I had the day's special - wow! Something they call the "Sandler" which had smokey turkey, bacon, Munster and gouda cheese, fried egg, lettuce, tomato and pesto mayo. I came here to try something unique, something I saw a fellow Yelper post about. To my dismay, they no longer serve drinking chocolate/Mexican hot chocolate. I figured that since I was here I may as well order something. I had already eaten lunch at a neighboring restaurant and intended for this to be my dessert spot. I had difficulty finding a good substitute. I decided to go with this restaurant's take on Creme brûlée. It was ok. Not amazing. Yes the top cracked very nicely when I broke into it. But it was so torched, perhaps a bit too much because it tasted a bit burnt. My service on the other hand was top notch! The male bartender was incredibly helpful. Answered all of my questions, and inquired among the staff when he didn't have the answer himself. Went to get different menus when I didn't find what I was looking for on the menu he gave me.
