Back to Saffron and had another 5 star experience. This time it was for one of my many birthday dinners over the weekend with a group of 6 amazing ladies. We all started with cocktails, I had a version of a dirty martini that featured vermouth which gave it a lighter and almost sweet flavor that is not the briny flavor of the typical dirty martini. I enjoyed it but I only had one. We ordered so many different things but the standouts include the tomato & mango salad, the oyster bed roast, the tandoori squash and my entree the pork vindaloo. It was sooo delicious and I was grateful to have leftovers because everyone else at the table order the softshell crab entree. That bothered me only a little because it was way too much food but also, it's a pet peeve of mine when people order the same thing- why not try/share everything on the menu ‍ Anyway, the service was excellent and so attentive. I was also treated a large slice of chocolate cake as a birthday treat. I was so stuffed but I managed a couple bites and shared with everyone. Upscale, but not pretentious, Saffron NOLA is a beautiful restaurant that pays respect to Indian cuisine while sprinkling a NOLA twist throughout their menu. I've been here twice now, once as a pre-fixe work dinner and once on a date-both times did not disappoint. Between the two visits, I've tried a good amount of the menu and their food is truly delicious with every bite. Their drinks are also unique and pair well with the level of spice and seasoning throughout their dishes. In particular, the chicken biryani is a standout, and the table side chaat is a fun way to start your meal. Excellent, professional service. If you are looking for a very nice, but not pretentious restaurant in NOLA, where you know the food will be well balanced and absolutely delicious, I recommend Saffron. My experience here was a 10/10! I dined here as a guest for an event and we sat upstairs in the event space. The decor of the restaurant is gorgeous. It's sexy, subtle, yet bold at the same time. Walking up to the event space was an experience in itself. The burgundy wallpaper with chocolate undertones complemented the natural hardwood floors beautifully. Each step was illuminated by an LED strip, which added to the dark and sexy ambiance. The upstairs space had the same burgundy wallpaper and long, suede, burgundy drapes decorating the windows. Even the curtain rods were burgundy. I was truly obsessed with the vibes! They do have restrooms upstairs so you do not have to go downstairs. The food was absolutely amazing. I think this may have been one of my favorite places to eat in New Orleans. I do not think I've had many experiences with Indian cuisine, and Saffron has set the bar extremely high. Every dish was a straight 10. I attached the menu so you can read for yourself everything I tried. The only thing I did not try was the mango kulfi. Everything else was full of flavor, distinct in taste, and made a happy home in my stomach. If I had to choose a favorite, it was the Bombay shrimp and the corn korma. But I'm telling you, everything was seriously good so to even say that is just based on palette rather than differences in food quality. The Salmon Pani Puri. I have NEVER tasted anything like that in my LIFE. The salmon is such a different flavor than any raw salmon in sushi I've had. It's got a fatty, almost creamy flavor, paired with the soupy, acidic, spiced sauce it's such a gorgeous bite. The semolina cracker cup is the perfect thin crisp and didn't fall apart. GORGEOUS! I would drive to NOLA just to have this bite again. The Potato Nest Chaat was delicious. I did think the table-side presentation on that was unnecessary, they just drizzled that mint chutney and tamarind sauce over top. I'm not suggesting to light it on fire, but... something more worth of presentation. Nonetheless, delicious. tangy and creamy yogurt, fried potato crispies, fresh mint. The garlic naan we got to go with was perfect. The tandoori squash didn't even taste like squash to me. The smokiness of the tamarind and all the accoutrements was amazing. It almost tasted like sweet potato. We sat at the bar and had a great time chatting with the people around us and our waiter! What we ate: Salmon Pani Puri Chicken Lasooni Oyster Bed Roast (still dreaming about these ) Dessert: A toffee cake with ice cream What we drank: Monsoon on Magazine Fly Like a Ghee-Six Espresso AF Total: $140 for two people We went at 5:30 PM on a Friday, and there were only a few other tables, which made for a nice, quiet vibe--no overwhelming noise or packed crowds. Our waiter was super attentive, knowledgeable, and gave great recommendations on both food and drinks! Now, those oysters--I cannot stop thinking about them. I will 100% be back, if not just for those. Everything we tried was fantastic, but if I had to pick one thing to skip, it'd be the dessert. The cake itself was on the dry side (even though the flavor was solid), but the ice cream? Excellent. Overall: Amazing experience. We passed Saffron NOLA on our first trip to town and were sad to be unable to visit. I made a point of coming on my next trip to town, and I was not disappointed. The service and ambiance were incredible throughout the meal. The staff were knowledgeable and able to make recommendations for putting together a set of dishes, which was trickier since I was dining alone. The tandoori squash was one of the best and most memorable dishes I have had at any restaurant in at least the last year. It was seasoned spectacularly and the combination of flavors and textures was perfect. The naan paired perfectly to sop up the sauces. I also had the chicken lassooni, which was also quite nice. I heard that the food is splendid here. As I eat Indian food all the time, I was not quite sure. But man was I proved wrong!! Each dish has a unique NOLA spin on it and surprsed us at every bite,wanting to go for more. I finally made it to Saffron NOLA and it was worth the wait! I was in the area for a Yelp Elite event and decided to come by afterwards to try this highly rated and talked about restaurant. I was seated at the bar which was wonderful as I got to talk to the bartenders and learn some pretty cool tidbits. I ordered the Potato Nest Chaat and Garlic Naan which was the perfect amount of food for me! The Potato Nest Chaat came with an experience as the server put together the dish in front of me and described the textures coming from each of the elements. That was really cool and the dish itself was soooo satisfying! Garlic Naan is always great and this one did not disappoint. Let me say, NOLA is one of my favorite cities for amazing food. The oysters in town are plentiful and delicious. But when I tell you that the charbroiled oysters are the very best I have ever had, I mean that says something. I still talk about these oysters and look longingly at the photos. They were out of shell on a very hot oyster plate that had a well for each oyster. They are tender, juicy and the most flavorful oysters and it is served with naan bread. I am pretty sure we got an onion pakora and an entree (both of which were delicious) but the highlight of the night was the oysters. We also had the chocolate cake for dessert which was also memorable. But those oysters were on point. The place is a bit small so make sure you make reservations. Located in the Garden District/ Uptown Oysters, you will find a great combination of Indian & Louisiana cuisine. I would best describe the vibe as sophisticated without feeling overly fancy. Incredible dinner! Had a dinner by myself for the first time in a while. Sat at the bar as there was space. (If you want a table, get a resy!) Paul was an amazing bartender. Standouts were the Nariyal Gulf Fish, Corn Korma, Chicken Biryani & Bombay Shrimp. Plenty of great choices for vegetarians and pescatarians. Great drink menu in general and the New Money is one of the best (and most interesting ) drinks I've ever had. The vibe is fine dining service but it's all executed in a comfortable way so that you still feel relaxed. This was a splurge for us but really worth it. My husband and I have passed Saffron so many times while browsing Magazine street and we finally made reservations. The food here is great but make sure you come hungry as the portions are large! The Tuna Crudo Chaat was super fresh and the mango sauce added a lightness to the dish. I love any type of crudo and this dish is a must. We also got the Truffle Naan and it was super soft and fluffy with a moderate truffle flavor. The Seafood Curry comes in a cute presentation with basmati rice and a smokey lime. There were large shrimp and a good amount of seafood in the curry. We also got the Chicken Biriyani and this dish was our favorite. The chicken was tender and the saffron rice was so good I could eat it alone. The soft boiled egg was also a nice touch. It comes with a side dish of yogurt to be mixed in the rice. I can't believe I visited the best Indian restaurant of my life last night. Saffron is home to a creative and innovate chef that focuses on Indian food on another level. While we ordered just about every dish on the menu the stand out dishes that crept into my dreams and will stay with me for life are the oysters and seafood gumbo. The pork vindaloo and bombay shrimp were a close second followed by the wok gobi masala and chicken lasooni. We were all in heaven and couldn't believe this restaurant existed in New Orleans USA of all places. Who would've guessed that after traveling the world in search of one of the best meals I would've found it at Saffron so unexpectedly by being invited by a friend? What a dream come true. Thank you to the culinary team and staff for bringing our dreams to life and customizing the dishes with the right amount of heat and spice. Desserts were enjoyed by all and the sticky toffee pudding was my favorite followed by crème brûlée. While I could describe every dish in painstaking detail it wouldn't do any of it justice. Indian/Creole fusion? Sign me up! This was a great meal all around, and I can see why the chef is a James Beard finalist. The dining room and ambience is wonderful, very modern and with a cool modern playlist in the background. Service was on point at every juncture with a friendly staff, and we even had an appearance from the chef to present and serve the Biryani dish. The cocktail list is large, diverse and very interesting, not to mention delicious. The sommelier was great and helped explain our beverage options. Our waitress was friendly and professional. How about the food you ask? An explosion of flavors! Do not pass up on the "oyster bed roast". Fantastic flavors, perhaps not really Indian flavors, but wow did this plate surprise me with delicious tasting oysters. The onion Pakoda was another big hit at our table. Somewhat like a blooming onion but oh so much better. I could have eaten the entire dish on my own, but grudgingly shared with the other diners at our table. We were a party of four, and all were happy with our food. Entrees were reasonably sized and shareable if you have some appetizers. The biryani was really delicious and a large portion. Our waitress suggested the side order of Raita, which was a pretty sophisticated rendition, and so glad we ordered it. We enjoyed the food so much that we were just simply too full to explore the dessert menu. We will absolutely need to visit again on our next trip to New Orleans. Have you ever been to a restaurant and know that you want to make a reservation to come back? After an amazing day celebrating a huge award for our daughter, she surprised us with an anniversary dinner at Saffron. It was the cap to a perfect day. So nice to be able to sit and relax over a soothing cup of Masala Chai tea, my favorite, while it poured rain outside. Loved the milk served hot so that the tea remained hot. Loved the presentation of the Aloo Tiffin Chaat. I'm a bit obsessed with Tiffin trays and this one did not disappoint. Loved the table side assembly. The restaurant is very nicely decorated and beautiful. Very popular which makes it busy and noisy. The food makes the noise acceptable. The family has the restaurant across the street, Kingsway, which is also superb. It offers a pre fixe menu leaning more to American modern than Indian. Finally got to have dinner here! I remember when Saffron opened up over 10 years ago on the West Bank, a much more humble operation, and the buzz surrounding it. Once it opened on Magazine, it was next to impossible to get a reservation and it sounded like it was worth the hype. I love the idea of a place growing and gaining such a following. And it seems like they truly deserve it. The most impressive thing that I couldn't help but notice was how tight of an operation it is. They have a very dedicated team working both front and back of house and they are dedicated to providing a phenomenal experience for their guests. Saffron is not a traditional Indian restaurant. It's upscale/trendy and has a gorgeous modern atmosphere. Classy! The cocktail and wine list is impressive and I had a sumptuous passion fruit cocktail called Vanilla Handcuffs. It comes with a prosecco sidecar to cleanse the palate. Have you ever? This is not a vanilla vodka-forward cocktail at all, but involves actual vanilla bean. It's literally exquisite. That said, their lack of vegan options is a big disappointment because for decades, I've always counted on a vibrant selection at an Indian restaurant. When I asked about vegan options, our waiter seemed to think that several items would work, including the daal, however there are some items, like the daal, that have recipes that cannot be altered. I'll get to that in a minute. We started with the Aloo Tiffin Chaat which can be veganized if you ask them not to bring the spiced yogurt sauce. This is so unique and tasty, and the presentation utterly lovely, as a different server put it together at the table, lovingly describing each sauce poured over the potato cake. We shared it but it could easily be an entree. Honestly not sure, though, that it is so spectacular that I'd order it again at that seemingly high price point ($25). We also shared the pickles, vegan if you get roti rather than naan (which is rarely vegan at traditional Indian restaurants, by the way) to accompany it. This is another dish I felt was at a pretty high price point ($14) for a tiny bowl of pickles. The roti is brought cold and is not anything to write home about. Not sure about it accompanying the pickles. I'd pass (might be better if you can have the naan?) We waited a pretty long time for our entrees to come out. The waiter came over and explained a mix-up in the kitchen. No big deal, my friend and I were catching up and were in no rush. What was less than desirable was that I had ordered a side of potatoes and the aforementioned daal and only the potatoes came out with the food when it all arrived roughly 20 minutes later, because the kitchen informed the waiter that the daal wasn't vegan. Shouldn't he know this? So I ordered the Wok Gobi (cauliflower) and waited. I wanted to eat the potatoes with the entree (their rice has chicken stock, which I'm sorry, is extremely annoying when you consider so many people count on Indian restaurants to have vegetarian options. Can't they have a plain rice option?) so they were in fact cold by the time the cauliflower (delicious, so delicious) came out. While the potatoes had some nice spice going on, they needed salt. Here's my issue: I 100% appreciate the kitchen being aware of what vegan means and wish servers in this day and age took the initiative to learn what dietary restrictions mean. My experience was less than ideal, cold potatoes (unless I just wanted to eat them first which is weird) and cauliflower. I hate ending the review like this, when otherwise service as a whole is extremely impressive from host to bartenders and waitstaff. But this really pricey dinner was underwhelming and I'm doubtful I'd return for a meal when at the same price point, I could eat at Shaya or Saba (both of which are Israeli and not Indian but they are my favorite upscale restaurants on Magazine) where I have a lot more options. I would return and have another Vanilla Handcuffs at the bar, though. I appreciate the atmosphere (and if that cocktail is an indicator of the other ones on the menu, I need to try more). read more

I've had as good (and honestly better) Indian food here in Nola for less money and more food. Nothing was particularly spicy or have that Indian flavor spectacular you crave. Service/Staff: The staff was incredible. At some point it felt as if everyone on the clock stopped by my table. He told me the chef looked out and saw it was just me and was very impressed haha. Another waitress proudly asked, "Did you hear?! New York Times named us one of the top 25 restaurants in New Orleans!". The chef also came to my table and we talked for a bit. He said he also goes out by himself all the time and orders a big portion of the menu. I definitely felt like a V.I P. from the attentiveness of the staff. Top tier experience. THE FOOD: Now I was on a solo mission. I knew I wanted something good but I really didn't know how to choose so I got the tasting menu (6 courses but I was gifted a 7th traditional Indian treat). The cool thing about the tasting menu is it's collaborative. You can say what you do/don't want on the tasting menu. I picked the gumbo and the oysters. I told my waitress to pick a dish she thinks I must have and I told her to tell the chef to surprise me. Just to be clear the tasting menu can/will include off menu items. Now here's the thing. I don't hear so well and after 3 courses I was experiencing an extreme food high. Sadly I don't remember the name of all the dishes. Everything was delicious! But I will speak on a few of the dishes. First up, THE CURRIED SEAFOOD GUMBO. Listen. I typically avoid ordering gumbo at restaurants. People that visit will all ask my top gumbo recommendation & I never have one. My favorites come from Ms. Dedra and Chef Toya. I only have access to that gumbo because that's family. Now I can confidently recommend THIS gumbo. In fact, at one point I was standing outside the bathroom and a lady asked me about the gumbo and I recommended it. Second, THE OYSTER BED, just get it! Thank me later.
