I have been coming here for years and have slowly watched this once wonderful place slide downhill. The food is hit or miss these days and the dishes never taste or have the same ingredients twice. It's pretty disappointing to say the least. And the service is lately has been non-existent. This visit we were already finished with appetizers before our drinks arrived, lucky we did have water. Who can say no to yummy Indian food? This place definitely has plenty of that. Though there aren't many Indian food places around Orange County I have to say, thank goodness for Saffron. It has great quality food. That's why it's my family favorite. Crisp flavorful samosas and creamy butter chicken, with some garlicky naan have been crowd pleasers. Tried out a variety of dishes during my visits here and they all ranged from good to really good. The paneer skewers and Paneer Masala are favorites. My friends and I were there for lunch on Monday of this week. Initially we were the only ones there. There was one young man waiter and he was more interested in being on his phone than waiting on us. It took a long time for the food to come out, but once it finally did, it was delicious! Food is delicious! Service and take out is atrocious. They're not organized at all. They need direct management as a go-to. My office placed an order the day prior to be ready as soon as they opened which is 11:30 (as agreed upon). I got to the establishment at 12:09pm and he couldn't find the order. Tells me no pending orders except a man named Bill, he even confirmed with the kitchen. Then brings it up on his phone (a picture of our order written down on paper) almost 10 minutes later and says it's almost ready. Which obviously it wasn't ever entered into the system to be made, I got here at 12:09 to pick up today. It's 12:39pm and it's still not ready. So obviously they started making it once I got here. Our office is closed for lunch between 12-1. I have no faith in this establishment to have food ready as promised. We have been going to Saffron for 15 years and the food hs always been excellent. However, there has been a change of ownership and though the food is still good, the service is terrible. A few weeks ago, we ordered online takeout and though everything was printed out on the computer, they still didnt include 2 items from the order leading to an extra 35 minute wait to complete it. Last night, we tried to eat in the restaurant. Our order was taken within 2 minutes. Almost an hour later someone came back to confirm the order and they had it completely wrong. After waiting a total of 90 minutes with no acknowledgment of a delay or any apologies, we said we were leaving in 5 minutes if we dont get our food. Again, no acknowlegment of a delay and no apologies and we walked out. It is a shame that a restaurant with such good food has degenerated into an organization with such poor service. We wont be going back there again read more

After shopping around Middletown, I decided to try Saffron because I had been craving Indian food all week. First off, the location is extremely poor. After pulling into the parking lot, I almost turned around to drive away. Thankfully I didn't! I pulled up at 2:18, and even though they were closing in 12 minutes (to reopen for dinner) they sat a few other customers and gladly took my to go order. I didn't really have a chance to inspect for cleanliness as I sat at the bar, but I was pleased with that area. While waiting, the waiters seemed to avoid me, never taking the time to reassure me that my order would be out soon, or even offer me a drink. That was really the only negative aspect of the overall experience. When I got home, the food was still warm and it looked beautiful. I ate an entire order of garlic naan and the Saffron Sampler appetizer all to myself and did not have a single regret. I will return in the future to eat in and hopefully be satisfied once again! read more

We haven't had the chance to experience dining in at a lot of restaurants in Middletown. I kept my expectations low especially given the location in a strip mall. The decor is nicer than I had in mind. A little formal, a good venue for a family party perhaps. The service is excellent and the food is good. I haven't had much Indian food since college in Boston so it was nice to have something different. The menu is quite large and has a ton of options. I loved the lamb samosas. We also had paneer tikka masala (vegetarian homemade cheese in a creamy tomato based sauce cooked) and murgh akbari (a really flavorful fried rice type of dish with chicken that is a bit spicy, comes with a yogurt sauce) with a side of garlic naan. We really liked them both. I imagine we will be back next time we are craving some Indian food! read more

We've been coming here for years, but this was the first visit under the new owner. Interior has been redecorated and the exterior repainted. Liquor license still wasn't on hand yet. The menu was familiar and extensive as before. Service was attentive and pleasant. Preparations were very good and a notch above what was previously available. Second time here and I have to say very disappointed. Food was Not great. If you know what Indian food is suppose to taste like you would know it's not good at this spot. Way too many spices, yogurt was sour as if it was spoiled. They ran out of Naan and also served rotten lettuce in two plates served. Biriyani wasn't good at all. I am super picky with Indian food. I got chicken Vinadloo. The sauce was really good but I only like white meat and there was dark meat chunks as well. The portions were generous, the rice was delicious and the garlic nan was amazing! If the vindaloo had white meat only it would have been a 5 star! read more

Excellent lunch buffet with a large variety of classic Indian dishes to choose from. The wait staff was very friendly and the restaurant is fairly large so you'll never have a problem finding a table here. My one complaint is that they had what sounded like funeral parlor music playing the entire time with the same song on repeat. Although we are both from the islands and eat West Indian food all the time, we never had authentic Indian food. It turned out to be an excellent decision! I came here a few weeks ago finally finding an Indian restaurant in the area. I'm from Long Island and usually ate at Patel Brothers in Hicksville. I will say their hospitality is on point, you don't have to ask for another drink your waiter always comes around. I went for the lunch buffet and towards the very end. They put out the tandoori chicken, lemon rice and saag paneer fresh again. There was many excellent tasting dishes to choose from. Even some tea if you wanted some. They give you complimentary naan also that was very light and tasty. If you want more naan just ask they don't mind giving you another round. I will definitely come back. I would like to try dinner and some samosas with the green (which is cilantro based) and red (which is like a bbq sauce) sauces. read more

I have been coming to Saffron for years and always enjoyed their lunch buffet, but yesterday's experience was just appalling. First of all, a buffet is defined as a dining setup where you can take as much as you want of whatever is available for a set price. During this COVID-19 crisis, they have what is called a "takeout buffet". In this setup, you're only allowed to choose two items which come with rice, naan, and an appetizer. However, they give you a takeout tray with mostly rice and the order of your choice in the side containers. Over the phone, they lied that it is like the pre-COVID buffet, we just had to do it as a takeout. Each "buffet" takeout tray was twelve dollars. Not to mention I got sick from their goat and chicken curry, something that never happened before. Very disappointed. read more

I am not super familiar with Indian food, so we asked RJ to make some recommendations. He suggested Chicken Tikka Masala and Paneer Masala with garlic naan bread. We started with Tandoori mushrooms, which were great. The rice was really nicely flavored and the main dishes were delicious. Saffron is a hidden gem of Middletown. It is somewhat easy to miss, because it is in the old Playtogs Shopping Plaza. I was invited to dine at Saffron by family members who had raved about the location for quite some time. I understand why. The food is incredible. They have generous potions, rich flavors, and you leave feeling far from heavy but instead full and satisfied. The space is quite big, and the service is wonderful. They are friendly, and accommodating. The owner is so gracious, and makes sure that you are content with your meal. I really appreciate that in any dining establishment. Saffron is a must try! Also! Oh boy, this is an easy one! Hands down one of our most favorite spots for Indian food. The preparation and presentation is so outstanding, the flavors and spices along with the quality and quantity is superb. My go to is Chicken Korma and it is incredible. You could tell that most of the people arrived at the same time so they were a little scrambled trying to get people to their tables and getting more tables set. It took a while to get the food, almost thought they forgot about us. ;-) But the food came about 45 min after we ordered and it was definitely worth the wait. We had an excellent eggplant appetizer, a delicious asparagus spinach soup, shrimp in mango curry and an off the menu lamb dish recommended by the owner. Also the naan was great. The chicken tikka masala was good, not great. Tandoori chicken were chicken wings tandoori style, some veggies options like peas carrots and lima beans? in coconut shreds and veggie curry. Spinach pakodas and palak paneer were bland but alright. Dessert was gajra halwa and some melted vanilla ice cream pseudo kheer? Waiter also brings you naan (if he remembers :P) Overall for the $12 lunch buffet I wouldn't go back but as other reviews said and the menu showed their a la carte looks pretty good (but more pricey). I guess I am biased being originally from a more food diverse location, however if you're looking for indian food go for it. It's pricey so don't be surprised. Quality is better than most places around, but if you have a standard for indian food you may be disappointed. I will say however some of their dishes, if you request, can get pretty spicy if you're into that sort of thing Would recommend if you're craving indian food just to fill that urge. Saffron is a good Indian restaurant. They are very nice people, and I am very happy that they were somehow able to convert a Ground Round restaurant into an Indian restaurant in upstate New York and do well. However, I feel like I need to put a damper on some of the hype here, as they aren't THAT good. I used to work in an Indian restaurant, so believe it or not I know a bit about what I'm talking about. I've been here several times by now. Starters that I've liked include the bombay calamari and the paneer tikka. The pakora was good but they could fry up some other things like peppers as well to add variety. The vegetable samosas I had were disappointing as the pastry wasn't very good and the filling was bland. The mango lassi I got one time was watery, and the next time was thick and very fresh. Their dal makhani is very good, although I prefer the dal to just be lightly spiced instead of put in a sauce; everyone has their way of doing things though, so this isn't a big complaint. Either way, the flavor and spice that should be there is there. Some of the misses include their chicken malai kababs that they cook in the tandoor, which were flavorless. Their kadai chicken was overly spicy but flavorful the first time I got it, and neither the second time. Their halwa were delicious the first time, and tasted like it had been sitting in the freezer a bit too long the next (same for the rice pudding, but in reverse). I think you can see a trend here. They do make great dishes on occasion once you learn how to order, but in between those are a lot ok stuff with some glaring misses peppered in. Given the much higher quality of ingredients they use compared to other Indian restaurants I consider them a solid place, but only with the caveats I listed. read more

When dining Indian, I always order the thali. Alas, no thali at Saffron... HOWEVER, this is real deal Indian food that can be made to blow your socks right off. I'd recommend the mango lassi to anyone and everyone and thoroughly enjoyed my meal both times I've been.
