I wanted to like this place but it was a mixed experience. The Manchurian cauliflower was basically deep-fried gluten. The cauliflower was essentially theoretical. Horrific to be honest. The wine list had the cheapest options - Crane Lake, in particular. The breads and rice were pretty good. The lamb - extraordinarily salty - but ok. The waitress could not have been grumpier. The place felt mercenarily driven by profit. The Saag dish was ok. Kind of a shame...almost a pessimist reflection of the drive to do the math on every interaction. Not going back. Always burnt empty trays. They hardly refill things and wait till it's all burnt or gone before xhamging. Even if it's all sauce or dried out rice. Also their lobby and bathroom floors are always sticky. But gotta love their mens room air freshener. It's a urinal cake nailed to the wall! This is legit Indian food. I love it but if you're looking for run of the mill Americanized Indian food, this may not be up your alley. I ordered a couple dishes (butter chicken, chicken tikka masala, chicken biryani, shaag paneer) all mild on the online order form, and they were all quite spicy compared to the place in New Paltz. We had been going to Saffron's since it first opened, but had gone less & less over the last couple years. The portions and quality had suffered. Last week we were in the area at lunch time and decided to give them another chance. Very glad we did! We met 1 of the new owners at the door who informed us of the change though he warned us they didn't have their liquor license yet. Hey, it was 11:30 in the morning; we could go without a drink! Overall, there was not much difference inside, though everything looked a bit nicer. The back banquet room had been picked up & looked inviting. The tables in the main room were better payed out. Our water who seated us directed us to a larger table. It was always a bit annoying to be pushed onto a (small) table for 2 particularly when the restaurant was mostly empty. So far , so good. What's important though, is the food. Looked like the same menu, but that was fine. We liked the menu! But had the quality improved? My wife ordered the Saffron sampler which is a mixture of tandoori dishes + a samosa. Everything was cooked to perfection with very generous portions. It was incredible! I ordered lamb coated in yogurt & spices also cooked in a tandoori oven. Per my request served very spicy. Again, a great meal! Service throughout our lunch was excellent. The only reason Saffron lost 1 star was there was a bit too much yelling back and forth between the servers & kitchen staff. Since they have only been open a couple weeks, hopefully that will improve. We will be backsoon to find out! read more

We have been eating Indian food for many years all over the east coast. This was the worst quality and service we have ever had. The restaurant doesn't look at all like the website. The table we were seated at looked directly into the kitchen and the microwave was used repeatedly to reheat various menu items. We made it 5 minutes down the road and both became very uncomfortable in our stomachs, still sick the next day. Real nice birthday for my wife!! We gave this place a try, we should have gone to the best Indian restaurant in the area, Tanjore in Fishkill!!!. We gave Saffron one star because there wasn't a lower rating. read more

My experience began here with the host lying to us and telling us all the booths were reserved as we got shoved at a miniature table in the middle of the room. Only to see him seat parties of 3&4 shortly after at those same "reserved" tables. Then we got a waitress that literally could not answer the most basic of questions. She went to the kitchen 5 times in a row to ask about basic things like dairy in dishes and if there was something currently available on the menu. Next we waited over 1 hour for our food to come out. Not once did the manager or waitress come by to apologize for the extended wait on the food order. I had to inquire with the busboy. The icing on this horrible cake is the incessant thumping coming through the walls and floor from the adjacent dance club. To be honest, there aren't any good authentic restaurants in Middletown, so to have a restaurant like this in Middletown is pretty nice. Usually I would come for lunch because they have "all you can eat" lunch buffet for like $15? There is a lamb dish that I really enjoy eating. The tenderness of the meat is cook perfectly. A+!! A must try drink is their Mango Lassi. Sweet with a nice tart flavor, all blended into one drink. Overall, ambience and service of this place is good with lots of selections to offer, but the best part of everything is their naan bread with a small hint of garlic. I've passed this place several times and today I decided I'm going to stop in and have myself a meal. So I gathered up a friend of mine who is a chef that specializes in Indian cuisine. I asked her to be very honest in her opinion about the food we were both about to experience for our first time at this restaurant. When we went in the decor is very modest which for me is a great thing you don't have to impress me with fancy chandeliers or lights and chairs and all that yes it does bring about a certain ambience but today I was here for the food. LOL now I must say when I entered into the actual dining area I was not happy at all it was not crowded there were approximately four tables available I would estimate there were 10 tables where groups were sitting one of the tables had an extended table which made up about 12 to 14 people. As I looked around the floor was not kept at an empty table there were large crumbs and small crumbs there was litter at other tables that were empty and that was not a pleasant sight to see. There should not be any litter on the table or beneath the table or on the floor especially if the table is empty I understand if people are sitting at the table but when you clean that area you should also clean the floor so that the next customer feels good about sitting. Nonetheless we were seated at one of the tables where litter scattered the floor. I did not make a big stink about it I simply just took my foot and gathered up together as much as I could to form into a small pile. When the waitress came over I was hoping she saw it but she did not make a comment and it surprised me that she didn't no I did another server who seem to be more than just a waitress. So this tells me that this is common. This is the reason why I did not give this place a five star. Now let's talk about the food we enjoyed dosa, Kori gassi, and I must admit I eat Indian food at least once a month. I have been to some great restaurants and I have been to some mom and pop restaurants. Judging from my palate the food was very yummy very spicy savory and delicious. However from my friends perspective she said she would return only for the food and then that will be take out because of the uncleanliness. She rated the food and a it was served hot and she said she's going to write a review to the New York times about it because she enjoyed it so much. So I hope you guys keep your flaws clean in case the New York times ever decide to come by. She was not pleased with the rice at all this is the only complaint she made to me. Presentation is key after presentation your taste buds decide whether or not the food is deserving of an a so she gave the rice itself a D. I am going to agree with her .The D was deserving the rice was not the best it's texture was a big gummy and clearly you can tell that this is not a better grade of rice that was used. However I will be back to give you guys a second chance. Upon exiting we noticed that they have great ratings from sources some dated . So I guess we were pretty much on the right track too. I just feel the need to update my review and tell you that this is still a five stars establishment in my book! Although, at some points I've felt they have fallen short over the years, i feel they are really turning them selves around again. The service I received the other day was incredible. Each and every staff member is so friendly so professional & so helpful. They are extremely on top of their service; waitresses and waiters know when to come to the table, fill up your glass, or clear plates. And then there is the food... THE FOOD! it's absolutely delicious! No questions asked. And the fact that they have a lunch buffet for $12, all you can eat, just makes me love this place even more. The food in the buffet is just as great as if you were to order it for dinner. There is an abundance of dishes as well. It's not just one or two things. They are usually different things with each visit. And it's a nice way to try all of their dishes to see what you like or to get some variety. Saffron's is my FAVORITE!! read more

When I had covid, I had terrible sinus pressure and as a result lost my taste and smell so I had someone bring me their biryani, tandooris, and chicken curry and I tasted within 5 minutes. Diminished, but back. By the next day I tackled the left overs and my taste came back 100%. Not saying it's a cure or anything, but the amazing spices and fresh herbs and vegetables they cook with and how they do it I believe played a huge role. Couldn't taste my chicken soup but I could taste the garlic and masalas and the more I ate it, the more I tasted. Their food is so good. They have my favorite Indian lunch buffet. You can't go wrong with tender lamb meat and sometimes goat meat. The sauces are not watered down and there is plenty of meat, unlike some buffets that try to skimp. The naan is always cooked to perfection. I prefer going during the day not just for the buffet, but because the lights are too dim at night and I usually go with family so the romantic lighting is unnecessary for us. The soft cultural music playing in the background is also very nice and soothing. Some days they would have Bollywood music videos or football matches silently playing on the flat screen, which is nice if the table conversation gets too boring. read more

A must try to drink is the Mango Lassi. Tried mango lassi at a different location, nothing can beat how they make mango lassi in this location. Chicken tikka masala here's very authentic. Match it with garlic naan of even just a regular naan or basmati rice, for sure you're gonna want to have more! Try the palak paneer, a cheese with spinach (I think) with garlic naan and basmati rice to match it with, perfect. LUNCH BUFFET: Tried it today and I'm surprised how cheap it was! I ordered the cheese paneer as a appetizer ( it was enough for a meal for me). I ordered the goat and my friend the lamb. We were like two kids in a candy store. The flavors were excellent. So glad we went!! This place was like coming home to your friend's house and having their family cook for you. We made a reservation for 2, and sat at a quiet table alongside the wall. Started off with the vegetable samosas, which were awesome, and the vegetable pakora, which I can say with complete honesty was one of the best appetizers I've ever had in my life. Salty, flavorful and crispy. Delicious. Absolutely delicious. Both came with dipping sauces which were a perfect compliment. Moved on to the main course, and we ordered the mixed tandoori plate and the fish korma. The fish is exactly what you'd hope for: buttery, soft and flaky with a silky sauce that covers every bite of the fluffy basmati rice. The tandoori plate had a mix of chicken, lamb and shrimp, and was an explosion of flavor with every bite. My only regret is that we didn't take pictures! We will be back for sure. Indian cuisine is such great comfort food. Everything is so saucy for you to dip your naan or enjoy over delicious fluffy rice. This place is the real deal; made by Indians, served by Indians, and plenty of Indians dining which is a great sign that the food is authentic. The depth of flavor in every dish is more savory than the last. I asked my boyfriend if he liked Indian food and he said NO. I couldn't believe it! I know he likes goat and there is nowhere else I know to get it at his point. So I take him to Saffron and order him the goat Bahraini. HE ALMOST FEEL OUT OF HIS CHAIR!!! He loved it, said he never tasted anything like it before. It's the only place he ever wants to go now. Also, the portions and price are more than reasonable. But everyone was so nice and attentive. Pro: Prices were reasonable Con: Naan should be included in every meal. I was a bit upset I had to pay for that separately. Con: We went there on a Saturday evening at about 7:30pm and it was chilly. It was chilly outside but they could have turned the heat up a little. I couldn't take my jacket off because I was cold. I went about 12:30pm Sunday mov 7. I ordered saffron combo appetizer. It was delicious. Waitress was attentive giving me water just as I emptied it. Price was okay. Many choices wow. Interior was pleasing cloth tablecloths with paper over that. A bar. A tv. The manager came over as well to check in. They give you these bread type cones filled with stuff as an appetizer. I bought naan bread this is extra with tamarind sauce with it. it was huge. The appetizer plate I got I ate couple pieces of chicken lamb and the 1 shrimp and still had some leftover to take home. I recommend it as a dinner just add rice. The rice was fluffy I think it was jasmine rice. There was lamb pies with peas looks like a fried perogie very good in the appetizer plate. A cilantro mint type sauce for that. Everything was delicious. Can't wait to go back.they no longer have their buffets tho due to covid rules. You can assume meals start at 18 but I had the combo appetizer for $12. Plus rice side dish. sometimes a couple appetizers makes a heck Of a variety of foods to try.
