Came by here to try the traditional food over the take out style for a change. The place was very quiet and pretty empty besides myself. Will say the dining room is beautiful and spacious. Had to get someone attention to order in, kind of weird but it was fast enough. So when The guy was showing me the menu, was cool of him to make suggestions since first time for me, he did jokingly say the end part of menu is popular since the Americanized Chinese food, I laughed and am like nah am here for the traditional, he give his suggestions in the traditional menu of what's popular, but I settled on beef ribs, white rice, pork dumplings and strawberry boba slush. For the drink, it was very refreshing and just the right amount of sweet, though I wish it had strawberry boba over the tapioca pearls. The pork dumplings were piping hot and very fresh, plenty of filling inside and not greasy. The dipping sauce was tangy and very vinegary forward, definitely a flavor trip. The beef ribs, were so melt in your mouth tender and flavorful, I really like gravy type sauce it was bathed in and really great ladled on the rice. Do wish I had more ribs though, since definitely the part of the meal, plus the plate it comes on, sells the meal. I will preface this by saying that up until this latest visit, this was our favorite Chinese food place in Orange County. We've eaten here at least two dozen times. I can no longer recommend this place as they care more about their "no bottle" policy than serving longtime customers who require a reasonable accommodation due to a medical condition. They told us a member of our party who suffers from CKD that couldn't have their water bottle, only babies could. We explained this and they said, "only babies". LOL okay, excuse me but your business is not being hurt by someone with a condition carrying their own filtered water with them. read more

I visited Taos restaurant a couple of days ago and this is my review. The food was pretty good I got the soup with the chicken and the rice it was really good and dumplings I also got that I would say the dumplings you should not get them because they were a little dry but if you had some soy sauce a little better. The service was pretty good the man came and served us right away he was very nice. The ambience was like very homey and like felt very nice it felt like I was at home eating Chinese I would say..... This place used to be John's Harvest restaurant that had been a local restaurant for decades. I heard from a friend that they liked this new place so I decided to try them out. There is a separate entrance for to go and one for dine in. The menu is a little different from your typical Chinese food place. I ordered steamed dumplings and pumpkin pancakes. The dumplings were tiny and flavorless and the pancakes were burnt. I am reluctant to give a poor review since they are a new business I think and I would like to give them another shot before possibly editing this review. However, I would suggest trying this place out if you are a true Chinese foodie. Maybe the other items on their vast menu are prepared better. read more

There are not a lot of really good Chinese restaurants in this area. For us, Middletown is a 45 minute drive but when we're in this direction, we love to visit Tao's. Large menu, with sometimes amusing English (I especially like the Cooked Wheaten Food category--noodles and dumplings). The "All-Day Lunch Specials" include soup and rice and are the best deal but if you want authentic and exotic items, you can work your way through the rest of the menu. And I know a lot of reviews complain about the owner's rudeness. She is brusque and non-nonsense but we have never experienced rudeness and she gives us whatever we ask for. Maybe she has softened, as most of the recent reviews have not cited rudeness. read more

Wow! Incredible food. We're from the Bay Area in California so we have plenty of Chinese restaurants. We've eaten Chinese food in San Francisco, the North Bay, East Bay and South Bay and Tao's is one of the best we've ever had. Very traditional Chinese food from different provinces but they also have an Americanized menu which we ordered from both menus. The hot and sour soup was incredible some of the best I've had as well as the orange chicken and sweet and sour pork was top notch. We wish Tao's was over by us, we're really going to miss the incredible flavor of this food. Do yourself a favor and visit this place. read more

We are visiting from the Bay Area in California and we've never had Chinese food this delicious. Anita and her husband were beyond hospitable and attentive. They have instructed and judged food classes, in fact they are offering classes now at this location. Ask them about their stories. We ordered bao pork dumplings, pan fried dumplings, kimchi, egg rolls, green onion pancake, orange chicken, double cooked pork, hot & sour soup, pork sliced pot fried with sweet n sour sauce. The tai tea was not too sweet. Best of all, we feel good and full but not bloated or sluggish. EVERY DISH was excellent. Authentic Chinese cuisine. This place is truly a gem. The crispy fish and the lamb ribs were excellent. The hosts are very helpful in explaining the menu. Was craving some authentic Chinese food while driving around Middletown, and found Tao's through a quick Yelp search. The restaurant is easy to miss when driving on the main road because it doesn't look like your typical Chinese restaurant. I stopped in at 1130am on a Monday, and Tao's was completely empty. I was immediately greeted by a friendly woman who I believe was the owner, who handed me the cleanest and nicest feeling menu. If you go, you'll know exactly what I'm talking about!! The menu had SO many great selections. I was excited and surprised to see that they offered a winter melon and pork belly soup (so uncommon to find this in restaurants, especially up in Orange County), so I knew I needed to order it! Both the winter melon and pork belly were both sliced thin; and the flavor of the soup was very good. For my meal, I ordered the sliced fish in chili oil - it was so unbelievably good!! The fish was nicely marinated and the texture of it was just perfect. The chili oil sauce LOOKS extremely spicy because it's super red, but it really wasn't too spicy or overbearing - just the right amount of heat for me. The portions of both the soup and the fish were large and can be split between two people. I'm so excited to have found this place and would highly recommend this place to anyone. Delicious! My dad wanted "good Chinese", a friend had talked about this place awhile back, so I was excited to go and try it tonight. I had the chicken griddle, and my father had the shrimp griddle and both were amazing. Nice sized portions, really there would've been enough to take home for lunch, but it was so good that couldn't stop eating it. I'll definitely come back. A hidden gem. We accidentally found it on our way back from the airport. Big restaurant with not a lot of customers. Boss lady wasn't very friendly either. However, the food was good. We had the pork belly with melon soup and it was delicious. A few other dishes including a tofu dish were pretty good too. Apparently the chef is rather famous and they do give cooking lessons. We went to Tao's after our first visit a few years ago. I called to ask if they could accommodate my special diet of Celiac. I asked if there are any Gluten Free options on the menu. The owner responded with yes. we make everything. When we got there the first thing we noticed was a foul smell, which seemed like a dead animal. but we decided to try it out anyway that was our first mistake. Upon entering the establishment we waited around and finally decided to seat ourselves. We wanted to reiterate that I needed to GF option, to which the owner said, no we don't have that option all our products come from the market. She was upset and told us to leave and never come back, which believe us we won't be back. I won't recommend anyone to go there. The owner was extremely nasty. I guess this was a blessing in disguise, since who knows what that foul smell was. In any case that's not how you treat patrons. read more

Amazing food! A lot of the dish names are English translations and not the Chinese name, but the food is definitely reminiscent of Sichuan food complete with the mala spice/peppers. My favorite was the griddled fish and the noodle soup with brisket. They do have dan dan noodles on the menu, and it satisfies your craving, but it needs more hot oil. I saw Tao's pop up as a hot new restaurant in Middletown while visiting my mother who still lives in this area. We're both always bemoaning the lack of authentic, varied Chinese food out here so when we browsed the menu online, we just HAD to check it out asap! And I'm so glad that we did! Tao's is still in soft opening right now (so no liquor license yet, just FYI). But we were warmly greeted by the owners and welcomed to try the menu. My mom was excited to try one of the hot pots and also wanted to order some other dishes to take home and try. The hot pot was a ridiculous amount of food for two of us, but so tasty - and be warned that if you get spicy broth, it is going to catch up with you! Next time I might get half-spicy, half-not. But it was a fun way to cook and try a lot of different ingredients including a few I'm sometimes wary of, like lotus root. We also got a vegetable spring roll, chicken fried rice, and the salt pepper shrimp. The shrimp were absolutely incredible - the chef insisted we try it first while fresh and hot and they were absolutely perfect - nice extra large shrimp with a great crispy crust. (And actually they were still super tasty even snacking on cold later that evening.) My mom gave the vegetable roll thumbs up when we got home. The only thing she was slightly disappointed with was the fried rice - while the rice had great flavor, she was hoping for some vegetables in it too - it was literally just rice, chicken, egg and onion. Still, I can't wait to be in the area again to try more of the menu...there is so much that looks tasty I'm sure we'll over order again to have leftovers to eat for days. The prices are quite reasonable and service super-friendly. Anita mentioned she is hoping to offer cooking classes are well in the future. Empty restaurant and family was arguing when I arrived. I was clear about soup/order being vegetarian and ordered with that communicated. Soup had pork in it and I tried to send it back and she said I would have to pay for additional soup. Reconciled that situation and then she came out and asked how the soup was only to start a fight with me about how they "NEVER give anything for free"!!
