Ordered the butter chicken and chicken tikka masala through door dash. First time ordering from here and I'm pretty disappointed. Both dishes were way too sweet and not savory at all. I got the chicken Tikka masala from here as a Togo delivery meal. There were a few good reviews and I was craving it so I got ir for dinner. Boy was I highly upset. The Tikka masala sauce did not taste like how I'm used to at other authentic Indian restaurants. This sauce tasted like a thick tomato soup with sour notes. At the same time is was flavorless and i even had to add a bit of salt. If a little cream and parmesan were added, it could probably be a good creamy tomato soup, but it was not tasting like what I'm used to. The rice was fluffy and the mango lasi good but the main thing I was craving was the entree and it was a let down. maybe there's a difference with the dine-in portion or maybe because i ordered it at 9pm but im hesitant to try it again especially when I want to hit that craving. read more

This is my second time visiting Saffron. Keep thinking about taste over the week. I tried baby eggplant masala as main dish and Gulab as desert. So delicious! The baby eggplant paste is melting in mouth. Perfect balance of spicy, sesame flavor, creamy, texture and pumpkin! The Gulab tasted perfect too. Warm and sweat. It made my day! Hands down the best Indian food in Astoria. I can confidently say that nothing compares to the food here. The butter chicken is delicious and always a favorite, but every time I go, I personally always order the Chicken Tikka Masala. I never get tired of it! They also have the Naan with nuts, fruits, and coconut and my god do I dream about it. Its a very casual family owned restaurant and always has a welcoming environment. Take out exactly what you would get if you were in person, which I feel that many places down size on their take out portions. I also always get the Mango Lassi which I will admit, sometimes I have two! Anytime any of my friends want to get indian food, I always order/ go here. read more

My girlfriend and I just randomly picked this place because we were in the mood for Indian, and we are so happy we did! Firstly, the service was great - our waiter was incredibly friendly and checked up on us multiple times. The food was delicious and portions were super generous (we did the $25 pre fix). I had the butter chicken and my girlfriend had a chickpea dish - both had wonderful flavor and seasoned very differently, really great! The decor isn't anything fancy, but it's clean and comfortable. This cannot be real...how can you have an Indian restaurant in NYC that is this lackluster? I love Indian food and order it alllll the time, but get basic items when ordering from a new spot. The Saag Paneer was so bland, I thought I had Covid again. The "naan" was not...please don't disrespect true Naan by calling it that. Less than a decade ago when Saffron first came onto the Astoria scene, it was a rough start. I found the food to be bland at times, slow and subpar delivery, and a disappointing service. Couple the fact there was a boom of nearly a dozen Indian spots during this same period made me less inclined to warrant a return. Fast forward a handful of years, things have changed: service has gotten more efficient, deliveries are faster than ever, and more importantly the food has improved immensely. There are a decent number of dishes I'd recommend right off the bat, which include: a flavorful goat biryani, a tasty chana saag, their thali platters, bindi masala, aloo gobi, and much of their vegetarian portion of the menu. I also feel pretty good about their lamb and paneer dishes, which are pretty popular. I am a sucker for their naan and samosas as well, even if they seem a bit skimpy compared to other nearby spots. I think the chicken tikka masala is a bit on the sweeter side and I honestly can't tell the difference between that and the butter chicken. There are some notable similarities, but when done properly there should be a semi-distinction between the two. I am also not terribly crazy about the tandoori chicken or the cauliflower appetizers, but otherwise, all good. It's not the same as their sub-$10 lunch deal from yesteryear, but pandemic pricing is now $11 for two entrees over rice and naan. Still not a bad deal in 2020 and they do a solid job of stuffing the container. I think folks sleep on their desserts, even if they're not extraordinary. Their kheer sometimes will have a face drawn on it from their chaat sauces or the rasmalai will resemble some cartoon character. It's subtle but a nice touch for standard sweets that don't normally get that kind of attention. read more

Stopped by for a Friday evening dinner and the place was completely dead to the point I questioned if we should have dinner there at all. To be a Friday night and not have not 1 customer was a bit questionable to me. I was immediately seated (given the obvious). The waiter brought over some water. They have an everyday special of about $17 with an appetizer and entree. We had 2 diff appetizers and each didn't seem fresh. It gave off a pre-packaged frozen type of feel. As for the entree, the meal came out hot and large portions, however in the end we felt our meal lacked more flavor compared to other Indian cuisine we've had before elsewhere. The waiter was mediocre and whispered half the time. Overall, was a mediocre experience. Thankfully the prices was super affordable and I was able to use the Yelp check-in discount on it. I stumbled across this Indian place on Seamless the other day as I was looking for some Takeout that'll cover 2 meals for me. I saw other commenters mentioning the Prix Fixe deal for $18 that included samosas, naan, rice, and your main course. Seamless had $5 off my first order so I couldn't say no. First thing I realized is damn, this is a TON of food. Especially for only one person. First, there were two samosas. Big ones at it too. Very very good. Tons of chutney and raita too that I couldn't even finish it. I had to chug down the samosas since I knew I couldn't save it for the next day. The samosas were so filling I could barely get to my main course: Malai Kofta. The naan itself was huge. I ordered a regular naan, but got a garlic naan (thanks?). That was fine, it was just a bit too hard by the time the food was delivered to me. Meaning that it was very hard to break up into pieces. It was a bit of a bummer to me. The malai kofta was very tasty. There was plenty and plenty of rice to feed me for at least my next leftover. Just a ton of food. Ordered a chicken tikka masala and a Aloo Mutter Gobi...both dishes came with very watery like they just threw the ingredients in there and poured some boiled water on top. Other than a little spice, not much flavor. I couldn't even finish a bite of this food. And usually I eat the entire plate (from a much better restaurant on 30th Ave--go there instead). Only added a star because they were so fast in getting the food out for delivery...but it seems like they worked too quickly and sacrificed quality. I got there 8:30 pm (35 mins after placing the order). and my naans were still not ready they said I had to wait another 10mins for the naans. I love Astoria because there is such a variety of cuisine to try and assorted nightlife and it's located just about a thirty minute drive from my home in Yonkers. We came here on two occasions, both with Groupons. The first time it was just hubby and I, the latest visit we brought our cousins with us for a double date and to catch up. Both visits were thoroughly enjoyed. On our first visit we shared the Kebab Platter appetizer and for our entrées, we both opted for Biriyani dishes; hubby choosing Chicken and I chose Shrimp. We also wanted to try a few of their breads. They offer a bread basket which allows you to choose four different types of breads. We chose Kheema Naan stuffed with lamb, Cheese Naan, Onion Kulcha and their sweet alternative, Khandari Naan, which has nuts and raisins. All were very tasty and a large order for the price so you will have plenty to take home. Our voucher included wine so I had a glass of house red and hubby went with a Lassi. He loved it; it was thick and flavourful. For dessert, we shared Gajar Halwa (carrot pudding) which is one of my fave Indian desserts. Our second visit, we had a double date with our cousins. We purchased a four person voucher and made reservations that were accommodated last minute. Once, again, the food was excellent and we had plenty left over to take home. read more

It wasn't one of the typical Indian dishes like Tiki Masala or Butter chicken, it was a chicken dish I never had but it was soooo good. My friend ordered a vegetarian dish she thoroughly enjoyed and of course garlic Naan. You can never go wrong with garlic Naan. My only thing they could work on was the service. I've been to Saffron countless times, and I can definitely say they never disappoint! Coming from someone who is obsessed with Indian food (and is also Indian), I can truly say they have some of the best Indian food that can be found in Astoria. Some of my favorites are Chicken Vindaloo, Chicken Tikka Masala, Butter Chicken, Mutter Paneer, and Paneer Butter Masala. They pair perfectly with some Garlic or Cheese Naan. I also recommend getting the cheese pakoras for appetizer! And if the spice is getting to you then also make sure to get yourself a Mango Lassi which cools down your palette! The service is impeccable and all the servers are so kind and welcoming. Not to mention, everything is decently priced and comes in generous portions!
