This is my closest supermarket so I frequent it weekly. However, it's not the best option in the area and I often find myself trying to get to a Giant. While their sales can be really outstanding (I regularly save 20% of my total by buying things on sale), the aisles are incredibly narrow, things like produce sometimes have no price posted, and the discounts often don't register during checkout leading to long waits at the customer service desk. It's okay for what it is, but I wish they had a bit better selection, especially in the meat department where they are greatly lacking. read more

Yes, this Safeway has some horrible, rude employees. But they also have some fantastic employees - who are great fixtures beloved by the neighborhood. The store is old and not as great as the huge new & shiny stores one sees these days but it's not bad at all. I actually prefer it to those gigantic places. read more

May 2018 they just finished spending a fortune on useless cosmetic upgrades, shuffled everything around so we can't find what we want any more, jacked up all the prices, and IGNORED the REAL problems: first, there are NEVER enough cashiers. Second, I don't think they enlarged the stockroom to make sure sale items do not sell out. Oh, sure, you're SUPPOSED to be able to get a rain check, but guess what? The manager is always hiding out in the office, and there is NEVER anyone staffing the service desk. The worst Safeway that I have ever seen. In fact, this is the worst grocery store that I have ever seen. I can't believe Safeway allows this place to be managed so poorly. Ignoring the fact that the store is small and cramped, the selection is already limited. To make matters worse, the store somehow always seems to be terribly understocked, understaffed and poorly run. Last time I was there, in the same day their freezers were all broken, their produce selection was completely depleted, the mussels I bought were all DEAD and smelly when I got home and unwrapped them, and they were out of freaking plastic bags. Please do yourself a favor and go somewhere else, it's not worth the time you'll save coming here I promise. read more

The store sadly has been in long term decline over the 14 years we've lived here. Packaged goods variety is sufficient, but stocks are often out. Frozen section often has broken units. Dairy and green sections are often low or out of stock. Checkout is strained at many shifts. Cleanliness is sometimes an issue. read more

Similar to a post below from August, I also was denied a COVID booster this past Friday, despite coming with complete paperwork and an attestation. I too was told that based on my age (under 65) that I needed to provide the pharmacy tech with additional support from my employer or another medical professional, even though I qualify on more than one level for the booster. You would think I was robbing the pharmacy, not trying to keep myself, my family and my community safe and healthy. If two of us are posting about this, I can assure you that the pharmacist/pharmacy tech has denied boosters to others. Safeway/Albertsons needs to investigate this IMMEDIATELY and get this individual removed from this pharmacy. He is NOT a doctor, nor does he have ANY legal or medical right to be making any decisions on who gets boosters and who does not and violated my HIPAA rights by forcing my to discuss my qualifications with him in front of other Safeway customers. read more

My wife avoids this store like the plague. I've always defended it as a quirky place that grows on you. No more. I went there today (Monday evening at 6:30). They had almost NO produce. Seriously - whole racks were absolutely empty. It was worse than before a snowstorm. There was no 1% or 2% milk. Only a couple of gallons of skim and some $5.99 a gallon designer milk. I've put up with the cramped aisles, the small parking lot, the lack of selection, the poor service, the checkout lines that are SO SLOW - but I'm done after today. This was the last straw. We've been going to Costco for a while. How can Costco check out an overflowing grocery cart in less time than it takes a safeway clerk to do 15 items or less. How is that possible. read more

Was visiting a friend for the weekend. We ran to safeway for a beer run only to realize that they don't sell beer. Not sure if it's DC law that you can't sell beer in a grocery store or if this location just doesn't stock it but either way it was a letdown. read more

I'm giving this store two stars for its location and parking lot and a few cashiers who know all the regulars. Otherwise... 1) "Excuse me, Customer Service, there's no one at the deli counter." "He's on his break. Can you wait 10 minutes?" "No, I can't. I'll go find something else for dinner." But, look, the Seafood lady has made the long trek from her station to behind the hams. "Hi, I'd like half a pound of the Citrus Glazed, please." "I don't cut nothing, you have to wait for the man to come back." 2) If the aisles were any narrower, they'd have to be one-way. You have to maneuver your cart carefully and wait for other people to move theirs. 3) They're out of stuff a lot, even when there's no blizzard coming. 4) What's there is difficult to find, especially since they rearranged the store recently. 5) Very limited selection in categories. 6) Slow lines. Then the employee ignored her and after the customer left berated the customer in front of me. Couldn't really stand going to this store before now I'm just going to avoid it. read more

I thought that the store had great promise but despite the "renovation" they cannot stock the same items each week. What can't they stock the same crackers or cookies each week. The produce department was enlarged but I am often disappointed when I get it home to find that what I have purchased is bad or rotten. How can the store sell rotten bananas. There is no manager at the manager's desk ever. I know him by sight and he doesn't appear to manage but to help out the understaffed checkout workers. The prepared food section has been enlarged but I am honestly afraid to try anything but the rotisserie chicken which is usually good. I am a frustrated customer and hope to get to know the local Giant. read more

I live right down the street and so i shop here at least ince a week. However, after today I will never go back. Besides the high prices, spoiled meat and oroduce, and often nearly-bare shelves- one of the employees (male) was wandering the store and begsn sexually harassing me (female). He came up to saying saying "oo baby, how you doing?" made whistling noises, and kept checking me out. As i made my way through the store, he kept coming up to me doing and saying the same thing. When i told the store manager, she did not seem alarmed or concerned at what her employee was doing. Needless to say, Safeway has lost my business for good. Avoid this store! read more

For a small supermarket, they keep a pretty good stock of what you need. Sales are good, and location is great, as they are right near other places like the drug store and a number of wine and spirit shops. read more

There must be staff morale issues at this store because no one seems glad to be working there! While checkers are not rude, they seem annoyed to have to check you out and they ask questions--- did you find everything, etc., in a rote, memorized way. I rarely go there even though the store is in my neighborhood. I prefer driving farther for a place with attentive staff. read more

This story is filthy and looks like it hasn't been clean since it was built, sometime early in the last century. The pharmacy is a dangerous place -- the staff are stubborn and uncommunicative. My medication was filled incorrectly with the wrong dosage. read more

This might be the worst Safeway EVER. The staff (with the exception of a few) are extremely rude and unprofessional. It's a rare occasion when I've gone in and there's not been a problem. The store is poorly stocked and the seafood and prepared food is less than appetizing. I've also seen a mouse inside the grocery store. Just terrible. read more

I think my Safeway reviews are growing so numerous that I might have to change my tagline ("So many Safeways, so little time!) and give them their own list! I am not a regular at this store by any stretch, but have been a few times, most recently when we stopped in the other day on our way back into the city from a ski weekend in Maryland. This is a small, old school Safeway the way they used to be when I moved to the District 15 years ago where I was offered help to my car and asked--genuinely--if I'd found everything OK. Customer service was also top notch that day when I asked somone where to find an item, and he not only described in detail where it could be found but offered to walk me to the aisle and show me himself. I was quite taken aback by his kind offer in that it's such a rarity nowadays and hasn't happened in years at any grocery stores and especially as the Safeways have been renovated and new ones have opened in the District and new employees have gotten cycled in. Clearly this Chevy Chase Safeway seems a part of this neighborhood that is in one of DC's nicest communities. I applaud the management and the people working here for showing they don't have to be a Whole Foods or Wegmans to keep their customers happy. read more

Most disgusting and smallest poorly stocked store I've ever visited. Management sucks. A few years ago, the manager who is nothing but a teenager practically hired me as a part-time cashier to supplement my income. During the interview, she kept blowing smoke up my rear telling me I could basically be an assistant manager when all I wanted was to scan groceries. I was told to call to schedule my background check. I did and got a date. I showed up for my test and I spotted the manager glance up at me. She looked less than enthused to see me. She was on the cash register pretending to help customers while avoiding eye contact with me as she formulated a lie. Finally, after she got the courage to acknowledge my presence, she made up some excuse of the test not being available and I had to return home. Days later, I called to inquire about my employment but Ms Manager was always "unavailable." I decided to call one last time. Finally got her on the phone and what did she do? Hang up. Ugh! Items always seem to be moved from one area of the store to another. Just keep them in ONE PLACE!! Or, they are hidden (like the naan). Other times, things seem to be sold out! I would think that looking at sales trends would indicate that more of certian items need to be ordered..But maybe that is just me. It is still frustrating. Employees are hit or miss. Some can be rude and unprofessional, to the point where i have had to complain once or twice (which I very rarely have to do. HOWEVER, other times they are very kind. I can think of three or four very kind employees that I wish the best for (which I rarely care to do, usually I just feel neutral) like that guy who seems to be Eastern European, a Chinese lady always teaching Chinese to her customers and 2-3 others, they are great. The deli, on the other hand needs both training and to be more consistent. I was yelled at once when I ordered sandwiches one by one. I was told "you could have told me both at the same time." The next time I did that, another employee yelled at me! Umm..ok. Manager seems okay, the ones I have seen, but keep items in the same place and stop hiding other items (like the naan) in hard to find places!! Fix that and hire a few more better employees and I would give it a 3.5 stars (not as good as the safeway in Gtown, etc.). read more

This is a Safeway that always looks like it is going out of business tomorrow. The dairy case in particular looks as if DC was just told there shall be no milk, eggs or yogurt for months--on odd yogurt here, a few containers of milk there but nothing organized or stocked. There is always a line and should you forget your reusable bag, you will be sold a plastic bag likely to rip before you hit the parking lot. Amazing location--awful store. read more

I live in the area. I am a black female. I notice that everytime I come in the store. I am being followed. I don't feel comfortable. I wish there was another store near by where I could shop. I am spending my hard earned money, so I don't understand why I am being followed. I never stole anything in my life. I've shopped here my entire life and I've always liked this store because of its proximity to my home, and its reliability in stock; I've always found what I needed. However, I came in one cloudy fall night, and while in an aisle, an employee started mopping almost around my feet as if I were a support beam holding up the ceiling. It was a minor annoyance. About two minutes later, a rumble erupted from around the cash register. It sounded like a chainsaw was strapped to a lawnmower and was being fed gravel. The Mop Man rounded the corner with a floor buffer about 3 ft across. Customers were speedwalking away from the din, and a newborn baby in a cart started bawling as the mother tiredly steered to get to the opposite side of the store as quickly as possible. I had water in my ears from a shower and the roar of this man's cleaning was still driving me completely ballistic. The store should at least have an alcohol license if customers are subjected to that. Nerves were pretty shot. I walked into the store ready to peruse the Halloween items, but it seemed as though no matter which aisle I went into, the Mop Man would round the corner. It was killing my spooky vibe. My Halloween excitement was replaced with stress, and suspense as I could hear the roar of the floor buffer coming close and closer, the sound echoing from the tall ceilings. It was like a low-budget horror flick. Sorry Safeway, I'm going to have to buy my spooky sporks at Giant. read more

I like this safeway a lot. It's small and the aisles are narrow, but it's in the city, so no big surprise. It's quite easy to shop without a list here because one can go up and down all the aisles in just a few minutes unlike the huge giants and harris teeters in the suburbs. You will never get lost in this grocery store. Sunday nights are not the best time to go as the market seems picked over at that time. Also it's sometimes difficult to find 80/20 ground beef unless you want a six months supply at one time. I'm not sure why. Overall the produce is pretty good; there's a nice selection of fruits and veggies with some organic varieties as well. My son loves the balloons that are seemingly everywhere, and he loves to push the 1/2 carts so it's easy to keep him engaged while shopping. The cashiers are nice, if a bit slow and the manager will lend a hand at the register if necessary. It's in an awesome location right off Connecticut Ave and has a parking lot, so it's very convenient. read more
