If you've been to any Giant supermarkets before, you generally know what to expect here. This store is clean, has a decent selection, and while some items could use a more frequent restock, no real complaints. I really have to hand it to them on service though- the Giant couponing and discount systems can be tricky, and sometimes I'll just confuse brands because of similar coloring or design. The endless patience of the checkout and information desk staff with my many dumb mistakes is really noteworthy. They're crisp and efficient, and more than willing to humor me in my attempts to save a dollar. Also, there's a CVS nearby, and this Giant stocks nearly everything they have at significantly lower prices. With an easy self-checkout, if you're in the area and need a quick (or not so quick) grocery or household goods pickup, Giant is your best option. read more

yet again another review of the security guard who harrassed me before and many other people is still working at giant food, why? when i entered the store he stopped me to give me an orange tag for my backpack (i'm 63). i asked him why i see other customers with no tag on their bags? he told me they entered through the rear entrance so they don't get a tag? what a ridiculous policy. after i had purchased my grocers he stopped me again and demanded to see my receipt, after i had obviously just paid for groceries. he refused to give his badge number or his name, he took my photo without my permission, so i retaliated and took his. he threatened me and harassed me. what is it going to take for giant food to get rid of this horrible human who is regularly harassing customers? is anyone at corporate HQ paying attention, clearly not! UPDATE: same day of incident, I spoke to Corporate HQ customer service who took all my details including email and phone number, and told me someone would contact me that same afternoon. Today, around 1:30pm, again, your front door security guard harassed, stalked, and made me fear for my life, upon me leaving your store. This time, it was witnessed by the supervisor in charge - "Will." He assured me that it will be taken care of. However, to reiterate my concern, this security guard chases me down to snatch your "theft-proof" tag that he places on my backpack. After many times he has snatched my backpack to place the tag on it, I decided to take my backpack off and remove the tag myself, after I make my routine, daily purchase. For some reason, this procedure agitates him. He demands that I do not remove the tag but, instead, he is supposed to remove it. I told him I do not feel comfortable with him snatching my bag to remove the tag. He then acts like he does not understand what I say. Today, on the way to my law school, I removed my tag and he charged over to me with his hand on gun and told me, he screamed at me that he was supposed to remove tag. I ignored him, while telling him did he mind if he could back up. I was terrified since he had his hand on his weapon, and his tone and volume of his voice. He taxed my PTSD that I developed after three military, war campaigns as a proud U.S. Army Soldier. As a federal government employee, I do cannot comprehend why he has such anger towards me for not letting him snatch my backpack around on my person to place and remove a tag on it. I have recorded these incidents and will eventually pursue a legal course of action. I feel worse than a criminal. He embarrassed in front of other shoppers. He has no business dealing with the public. However, I think I know why he conducts himself like this. He discriminates on some other persons of color. He must be removed from this post immediately since he is a threat to some customers, such as myself. The person in charge, Will, witnessed the entire thing and assured me that the incident would be taken care of. I believe him. I have no complaints on your store. However, this process has confused me more than law school and the business courses I have taken at Harvard University. read more

Torn with this review- I wish you could give the meat, produce, cashier, and deli sections separate reviews. The meat section- Mike is awesome, friendly and helpful. They all do what they can to stock what they've got! And will always check in the back for you if you have a request. The produce- Lance is the best (even if he likes the Ravens, haha!) He is always kind and helpful, pointing you in the direction of good sales and it's so appreciated! There is also a new employee who started a few weeks ago, who has also been great. The cashiers- way more often than not, go above and beyond to help you with a smile. I think I had one bad experience in two years. There's one cashier in particular whose name I cannot recall- but she wears a tweety face mask and she always makes me smile. I try to go to her check out lane when I food shop! Here's where the two star review comes- that honestly should be a one. The deli section. If you get greeted, it's always with an attitude that they don't want to help you. It's gotten to the point that I just get the pre- sliced meat (or skip cold cuts for the week, if they're old which often they are). Yesterday, I purchased chicken that I may actually bring back. The new self-checkout "system" at this location and the Wisconsin location is ridiculous - no more than 20 items and extremely sensitive scales, such that you can't have anything else in your bag (such as your wallet or keys) or it stops working. You must scan each item and place it in the bag one by one or it stops working. Take the bag off the scale to make room for another bag and it stops working. Try to load things directly into your granny cart and it stops working. I go through self-checkout because 1) it's faster if I scan my items myself, as I know what my fruits and vegetables are*, 2) I can then pack my bags myself, as I have to walk home with them, and 3) usually there are very few regular lines open, with long wait times - in part because most employees are helping re-set the self-checkout lanes that are constantly erring. Think it's time I stop shopping at Giant. * case in point, today I ended up going to a regular lane and the pomegranate I bought was rung up as a grapefruit. Go figure. read more

We have decided to discontinue shopping at your store. I utilize public transportation to commute to work and require a bag to transport my medical supplies and government-issued computer. However, I was informed upon arrival today that bags are not allowed and was instructed to leave it on the floor. As a mature adult of 40 years, I find this policy to be unreasonable and concerning, as it leaves my valuables vulnerable to theft. I would suggest implementing lockers or conducting bag inspections at the point of exit if security is a concern. Additionally, I have observed an increase in prices and a shortage of staff working at the registers. Everyone is hurting financially but you just lost a lot of paying customers. read more

Fairly average grocery store, but items listed in the app are frequently not even actually carried (but the app gives the aisle number) Stocking is REALLY bad, the meat frequently looks disgusting and/or is expired, people shoplift, cause huge scenes, and trash the plaza. Last time I went in an apparently newly assigned person in the deli department was VERY loudly dropping the "F" bomb, bitterly complaining that he'd been assigned there but gotten zero training. My nerves were shot after all that (nobody was even attempting to address the behavior, so presumably it's acceptable). Never shopping there again-I'll do online ordering at a much cheaper store, and get delivery. If I was able to get around easier, I'd shop at Wegmans. read more

My go to when at work!! I love how this Giant is downstairs from my office. Sandwich, Salad, fresh fruit, even some Icecream a few times this summer! After attempting to flag down four different people, Vanessa Wilkerson finally came over. Everyone was so nice at this location! A complete 180 from the disinterested and apathetic service I usually receive at other Giant stores in the area. Even this security guard was in on it, smiling and greeting customers as they came in the door. He also went back out into the entryway to bring me a handbasket, which for the life of me I could not find in the store. The layout is quite different than other stores I've been to, but I was able to find what I needed with relative ease. Self-checkout was a breeze and I was on my way in no time. I was also please to discover that they sell beer and wine at this location. Will have to keep that in mind for my next visit. read more

Shopping experience has deteriorated significantly over the past two years. The self checkout machine software halts the checkout if you even touch the bag before final check out. They have apparently stopped bagging at the regular checkout. Food is ok, prices are ok, but it's not worth being treated so poorly. read more

Nobody mans the customer service phones. Sort of bizarre to see a Giant exterior get blended into a corporate building format. Whatever, as long as I have my olive bar ($7.99/lb). Produce section isn't too ripe. Salad bar is pretty decent ($5.99/lb, multiple container size options). Things to skip: roasted red bell peppers, artichokes, beets, mysterious-looking shell pasta salad in beige sauce. I love these three produce items a lot, but they tasted funky, and the peppers hadn't been cut into easy strips. Everything else I shoved into my lunch/dinner salad was fine: spinach, romaine lettuce, organic greens, Roma tomatoes, mushrooms, potato salad, boiled egg halves, mozzarella balls, shredded cheddar, macaroni salad, watermelon, cantaloupe, honeydew, strawberries, blackberries, pineapple, diced ham, diced turkey, penne pasta salad, grilled chicken (bit dry), tuna, broccoli, cauliflower. I know, I'm excessive. Not sure how I refrained from shaking craisins and sunflower seeds over the top. Some pre-made hoagies and croissan-wiches. Some sketchy slices of cake with enough icing to determine that they were selling 4th of July cake on the 11th of July. Too indifferent to stab the mute button on the self-checkout window. A fruit fly or two buzzed around the dining tables near the door, but the actual salad bar seemed clear because of traffic. read more

I love next door and find most of the employees here to be truly wonderful. I've had an awkward transaction with a couple of the ladies but most people and I great each other happily and know enough to ask what's going on in our lives. This giant is totally part of my community and the employees make me feel welcome. I love seeing them and following up. They are so helpful! This grocery store works for getting groceries. It is by no means a wonderful shopping experience. The interactions I have had with employees have always been positive. The cashiers are always kind along with the delicatessen employees and customer service reps. My only complaint is that the produce is not always of the highest quality. I can usually get in and out fairly quickly. This is the closest grocer to my home, and I'll stick with it. read more

This Giant Food store is very small. It is clean and not very busy but the store is so small that they seem to squeeze everything together. The staff aren't very hopefully when it is late. This Giant has lots of what it does have, but I used to live near the Silver Spring Giant and the lack of a hot bar is glaring. It has packaged prepared foods like chicken, but they are cold, not hot, so they need to be reheated. You can't just grab some hot fried chicken and take it to a summer picnic. There is a salad bar, I realize not every Giant even has that, but a hot bar would be appreciated. They do have sushi, but no actual sushi bar, it's all premade. Several lights in the frozen section were burned out, both in the ceiling and in the freezers themselves, making the aisle noticeably darker. The frozen meals section seemed limited, although there was plenty of frozen stuff in general. The layout took some getting used to. The canned fruit section needs help, especially the store brand--you should always be able to get canned fruit in juice, no added sugar. They had every version of fruit cocktail/mixed fruit except in juice. Light syrup, heavy syrup, water with artificial sweetener, etc. In juice should be the default. Canned fruit doesn't need extra sweetener, calories, etc. Del Monte had it, but the store brand is much cheaper. The fresh bakery section seemed a little lacking. When you don't have a car and need a supermarket next to a subway, this a great place to go. In DC only Giant, Safeway, Harris Teeter, and Wegmans have full inventory. If you want a 1 stop shop you have to go to one of these. Amazon and Whole foods don't cut it. There aren't that many right at subway stations, most are on bus lines. Bethesda has giant and safeway walking distrance but not right at the station. So this is a good place to stop on the way home. read more

There are a thousand reasons why I hate this place including horrible customer service, shopping carts all over (even blocking the elevators) and ridiculously high prices. The newest one is their parking attendants/system. I was charged $6 even though I was only at the store for 15 min. I honked and waited for the security guard to come out--nothing. There were cars behind me so I paid the amount. The security lady comes out AFTER that and says it was because I put my card in backwards. Seriously? Your cards system has no problem charging me for an hour (and not more) if the card is backwards but can't tell if I've validated it? Sounds like a scam. Screw this place. What sets this giant apart is definitely it's location and accessibility. There is underground access to the Van Ness apartments which makes it super convenient for all the residents(including me!). I would say the staff are fairly friendly. There are some that go above and ask you if you need anything while you are just picking out tomatoes. Then there are those who could definitely improve on their soft skills . I really don't understand why this grocery store has bad reviews. Every time I come here, the employees are all extremely nice and helpful. Everything seems to be well organized and well stocked. Don't pick your nose in front of the mirror, there's a security office behind it. Yes, you CAN turn off the voice on the self checkout. Just touch the speaker icon on the screen and it will mute. Touch again to unmute. The only part of the process that cannot be muted is the final, payment part. Get a Giant card, it's free to get. They track your every move through it and have good laughs about your rice pudding binge, but it's worth the savings. Oh no, they're out of skim milk half-gallons! Except they're probably not. Ask a staff member nicely and voila! Milk will appear out of thin cow. I mean air. The milk is skim but the cow was probably fat. read more

I was just a visitor to this neighborhood. I needed to run to the grocery store to pick up a few things for work. I ended up at this unassuming Giant store at the Van Ness metro. This Giant was GREAT! It was clean, organized and the Cashier, Wanda, was "interesting." I couldn't tell if she was quirky or crazy. However, since I like both quirky and crazy, Wanda is alright with me. If you live in this neighborhood, I think this Giant is worth your time. read more

Do NOT go grocery shopping here. I have now been three times. I have been overcharged three times. Every single time I point it out, and the check out employees stand there and stare blankly at me until I leave. Twice now, I've had to go back to customer service to be reimbursed. The second time it was for $20+. I'll have to go back again tomorrow to be reimbursed for being overcharged again. This Giant is bright and clean, but they are missing some basic items that a store their size should absolutely carry, like vegetarian bouillon and refried beans. Me: "Excuse me, where are the refried beans? I've been looking for them in canned goods and ethnic foods for about 5 minutes, but I can't seem to find them." Employee: "Oh, they should be in the kosher section." I am a Jew from Texas. I give him a Look. Me: "...refried beans are in the kosher section? Really? That's quite unusual." The customer service at this giant is extremely disappointing. I bought some mozzarella that was labeled for $5.99 and I was charged $6.99. When I asked about it, the cashier refused to reimburse me, she called the manager who also refused to reimburse the amount, explained the item was mislabeled and was very disrespectful in her demeanor, it was a very negative experience and reminds me why I always choose the self check out aisle. There are a couple of staff by the fresh produce section who are extremely nice and I can tell are trying to improve the culture at this store but unfortunately, there are still a few that should not be working in customer service. read more

Don't let any high ratings fool you -- these are just poor souls jaded by the lack of decent grocery stores in DC. 1. most items are overpriced (read: Safeway is cheaper and, in my humble opinion, better quality) 2. produce quality is extremely poor. have purchased several types of produce multiple times only for them to go bad within 1-2 days. that's if you can find something worth buying within the mess of bruised or over ripe items. 3. horrible organization. as in, the labeling of the aisles (signage). why make my life so hard? they do have an underground garage and validate parking. that's good. but the Van Ness Giant will remain a place where I begrudgingly go only out of sheer geographic convenience when I'm in need of less than 10 items and don't have time to head elsewhere. sigh. read more

As a general rule, I think Giant is one of the world's worst grocery store chains. My least favorite one is in Glover Park which specializes in antique produce. The one closest to my house -- by Friendship Heights -- does the job, but it's nothing extraordinary. Today I checked out the one in Van Ness, and like all Giants, it suffers from some serious problems. But to start with the positive - hooray for wide, brightly lit aisles, and for well-stocked shelves. Now to the downside - Giant seems to specialize in bad signage. Sometimes only one side of the aisle will list what's in the aisle - or the signs on one side of the aisle will be different from the sign on the other end of the aisle. You could spend twenty minutes doing a huge loop around the store looking for Nutella. That just seems silly. But where Giant really suffers is with its checkout procedures. This Giant has that protocol that drives me crazy (CVS does this too) - the one queue for self check out that feeds into a bunch of lines. I suppose it's efficient, but there's nothing clearly marking the fact that there's one big queue (especially since it's hidden behind the salad bar) so people who are not regular Giant shoppers routinely miss it and try to jump ahead (not their fault really) only to be met by irate, yelling shoppers. If you skip the big self-check out queue and get on a line with a real live Giant employee, brace yourself for a slow moving checkout experience. Giant, every other supermarket has seemed to figure out the whole checking out experience. Can you? read more

There are a few criteria that I look for in a supermarket: 1. expedience 2. organization of groceries 3. friendliness 4. sales 5. working cashiers This supermarket is very disorienting due to its strange internal organization. Therefore, my trip was not very quick. That tells you how well this store did with the first two criteria. The staff at the store was very friendly and pointed me in the right direction when I needed to find tortilla chips. By the way, an aisle with chips should be clearly marked that it holds chips.... it really shouldn't be that difficult to find. The prices were reasonable (given the neighborhood that this store is in) and I found a sale on San Pellegrino water, which was awesome. However, the scanner didn't work on my Giant shopper card - the cashier didn't even try to scan it, she just asked me for my phone number. Wasn't this place redone a few months back? Shouldn't everything be working like clockwork? read more

A grocery store is a grocery store, especially when it's part of a chain. However, I must admit, this recently renovated darling of a supermarket does...well...what it's supposed to. Always well-stocked, always clean, and very well organized, I have had little-to-no issue finding everything I need. I've had to deal with customer service desk only once, and the representative, much like the rest of the employees, was rather lackadaisical. Thankfully, living next door to the establishment, I have had minimal issues making a quick run or two. Additionally, during the bitter cold winter/snow season, there is a tunnel through their parking garage that leads me directly to my apartment complex. One evening many months ago, I had a heart-to-heart with Raymond, an ex-con who works at the deli counter. While our conversation was incredibly awkward (we were at a bus stop), he was well-mannered and sincere - and whenever I see him at work his legitimate good-nature shines through behind the deli counter. There are a lot of personalities at this store (as you can see in other reviews), but for the most part they are competent. As expected, sales directly correspond with corporate just like any chain - reasonable as expected. Convenient, efficient (when it's not "rush hour" for food-shopping), clean and neat. This Giant is neither jolly nor green, but it's demeanor, much like it's location and appearance, is very down to earth. read more

Being from California with huge, new grocery stores stocked with tons of fresh produce, I was going to give Giant a 3. However, compared with other DC stores, I think it's a solid 4. Things I like about Giant: +It has a good amount of everything. Your normal groceries, organic foods, ethnic selections (mainly Mexican, Asian products), and cheeses. The meat and cheese "island" behind all the produce is a lot of fun to scope out. +Giant's "Simply Enjoy" line of food is fun and good for entertaining. +Decent prices, especially if you have a Giant card. +It's clean. Nothing that bothers me more than a dirty grocery store. +They play fun music--ABBA while checking out...yes! +They have a redbox where you can check out movies for a dollar +You can have the Giant circular emailed to you weekly. +Super convenient location +There's an underground tunnel to my building- Van Ness South. This actually takes longer than walking outside, but it's a good option if it's raining or snowing. Things that need improvement: -Check-out is always a roll of the dice. Some cashiers are super slow and grumpy (there are some nice/fast ones). -It's generally an East Coast problem, but fresh produce. I recommend getting "sturdy" produce here like bananas or carrots, and other stuff at Whole Foods or Trader Joe's (eggplant, cherry tomatoes, etc). -They waste so many plastic bags when you check-out. I've lived in Washington DC for many years. In all that time, I've been very pleased with the GIANT supermarkets I have patronized. This one, situated by the UDC-Van Ness Metro Station, is one of the best. It abounds with heaps of fresh produce, desserts (the slices of fresh yellow cake covered with a tasty frosting are always YUMMY!), and aisles with just about any item you'd want from a supermarket. Last week, after attending a book reading at Politics & Prose, I was feeling 'a bit peckish.' So, I made a quick stop at this GIANT supermarket for a slice of fresh cake. I felt instantly at ease the moment I entered the store. Later that night, I happily devoured half of that slice. DELICIOUS. read more
