I was surprised to see Safeway in Canada. I always assumed it was a northern California chain! The interior is very clean and fancy looking. I came for some sundries and decided to grab a quick snack from the deli, too. Maybe it's not fair to judge an entire store on just one cashier, but I have never been so rudely treated in my life in a grocery store. I had just three things to buy and I was in a hurry because my partner was waiting for my outside with my dogs. As the cashier started to scan my items, I swiped my credit card. "Not so fast," he said. "I have to see about your discounts first." I explained that I did not have a Safeway card. "Give me your phone number," he demanded. I said again that I did not have a Safeway account. "Look up at me," he said sarcastically. "You're giving away your country and state. We do things differently here. Now, give me your phone number." I am not sure why I did not just walk away, but I sighed and gave the the phone number - which sure enough did not work. I signed the credit card receipt and as I was leaving I he shot a final, "Well, enjoy your visit." I hope that this balding little man is not typical of Safeway Canada employees. I just happen to believe that you do not insult your customers and if they do not choose to give you personal information like a phone number, for whatever reason, you respect that. read more

Too much of a monstrosity for me to even begin to like. I loathe chains in general, but this Safeway is massive. It took me 20 minutes to get two things and pay because the items were at opposite ends of the store. I know it may not *look* great, but why don't chains just have everything food related on one end, and all other "things" at the opposite side? Like I really need detergent when I am picking up bananas...or do I?? Anyhow the staff are friendly and will let you taste everything before you buy. ;) And they have a upstairs patio where you can watch the randoms on Robson below...or talk to the friendly man with a cart full of cans about life...just make sure to give him your [empty] can of pop afterwards. ;) read more

This store is ridiculous. there are no elevators or escalators into the store which is on the second floor. They have been broken for months and why they can't be fixed is beyond common sense.People have to climb up stairs or climb up the escalator and that does not work for seniors or anyone with disabilities. always loved Safeway, but saving a lot of money not shopping there because of this. The store is half empty most of the time. You could have built a housing complex in the time you have taken to repair the elevators and escalators! read more

Im always disappointed when I shop here - not once have sales staff asked me if I actually NEED a plastic bag despite the fact that I always carry one with me like many environmentally conscious shoppers do now a days. They have all these supposed environmental values listed on their corporate homepage but clearly don't practice them in store. read more

Chinese food buffet - EXTREMELY OILY AND GREASY! To the point that is makes absolutely no sense for that much oil. Karma come quick to the Chefs and Safeway executives! This should be a health hazard with huge fines! read more

It was great to have a convenient supermarket so close to a residential area and close to my hostel. Getting drinks and snacks here was very easy and made my vaca a tiny bit smoother. There is $5 parking in the evening for those who can't find a parking spot. read more

This store never has enough cashiers - ever! The last 10 times I was shopped at this Safeway they haven't had enough cashiers. There are only ever two available cashiers and you would think to expect with a lineup of 15 people in it they might call on another cashier; this never happens. Expect to wait a long time to get in and out. read more

This is the worst grocery store I have been to. The staff and especially the store manager (Tristan or something) are extremely RUDE and impolite to their customers. I asked a few questions regarding the flyer, coupons, etc. and they all provided one-word answers without explaining further. The cashier and self-check out line-ups take FOREVER. On a normal business day, there were only 3 cashiers present out of a possible 14 spots. The cashiers are the most stupid cashiers I have seen in my life. A lot of their chips and biscuits were EXPIRED and the store manager did not make any effort whatsoever to provide a reason for why these expired items were still on the shelves, nor did he provide some sort of discount or compensation. My first and last visit to the Robson St. branch of Safeway was an utter DISASTER! NEVER GOING BACK THERE AGAIN! read more

This is one of those new trendy Safeways, located right at Robson and Denman, Nothing I would rave about except FREE parking DOWNTOWN!

I shop here quite often, as there are not a ton of options in the westend, and have to say this place is notoriously understaffed - at least in cashiers. There always seems to be other staff walking around stocking aisles but for some reason on a busy night there's only 2 cashiers on and line ups so long it goes into the aisles! It's downtown... Safeway should know by their sales & camera footage that this is a regular problem, and anticipate it to be busy by providing adequate service so people aren't all crammed in the main aisle and waiting an extra 20 minutes just to buy their food. read more

I was pretty shocked to see some of these reviews.....but I shouldn't be surprised, most of them were from U.S. tourists. I hate shopping malls and don't really like chain stores in general, but this is close to where I live and when they revamped it they did a fantastic job. I think the one thing that ALWAYS impresses me every single time I'm in there is the staff. If I ask where something is, they want to get it for me (I'm not an old lady!) or walk me there. No green grapes left on shelf - they practically run back to get more for you. Just fabulous. BUT, hear they've been bought out by Sobey's - OH NO, what's going to happen now. Oh yes, I had to laugh at one U.S. shopper who just was totally amazed there was no liquor for sale. Hey, you're in Canada sweetie. read more

It's a big grocery store. Much bigger than you normally find downtown. Pricey, considering the food is nothing special, but it is luxuriously uncramped. You could tap dance down the aisles and not hit anything. read more

This morning a very large mouse ran in front of me in the store. The manager I spoke to did not seem to care at all. This store has really gone downhill since they were purchased by another chain but mice inside the store is an all new low for me. If I do ever shop here again it will only be for paper goods or pre-packaged items. read more

What crap service last night nov. 11. The employees and manager have no thought or concern for its customers time. I waited with some other customers for more than 20 mins at the bakery to get bread sliced. The one lady finally gave up after 2nd trip to bakery and asking for help. She finally took some bread that was sliced already. The first choice bread I went for was not available so next pick required assistance. None to be had and the manager walked right past me and his drowning customer service gal, to hide out on his office. He had no respect or concern for me or my time and hid in his office for such a long period of time when I requested to talk with him. I guess he figured I would go away, which I did. If customers are a bother and you don't even have the awareness of the customer, why are you there? It's not the first time I've had ignorant service at this Safeway. I'll walk further over to Davie street store . They have always given good service there. Robson street Safeway is a beautiful store but I think it's employees hate their jobs and the customer!! It shows!! And the manager sets the tone! I'll get lost and leave you alone :-((( I'm sure you have more customers that will adjust to your treatment and crappy customer service. I will be honest. I normally don't go to Safeway. I find it $$$$ and I normally get what I need either across the border or Extra Foods which is closer to my house. I went to Safeway as I was given a $50 gift certificate through work as a holiday bonus. This location was the closest to my home without having to take a train in the cold to the Broadway location. This location is always quiet and most times I get what I want when I am walking in there. I wanted to buy some instant food items as I had to work the following day on NYE and really didn't feel like spending an hour in the kitchen to prepare something for 1 day. I bought some fruit and veggie platters to start with. The fruit on the fruit platter had mold. I didn't see this through the packaging as the fruit was hidden from consumer view 'cause of the label. I noticed that the same was another pack of fruit plate that I had purchased. Good-bye healthy breakfast that day and a start to what was supposed to be a good healthy 2013 start. As for the rest of my lunch, veggies were decent, not as crisp as I had remembered them to be. I spent the rest of the gift certificate on gluten free snacks and bread. read more
