Just reviewing the restaurant and bar side of Urban Fare. Was pleasantly surprised by their happy hour offerings! Urban Fare $5 items from 3 - 7pm. For food, they have the shrimp tacos, fried cheesy pickles, poutine, pretzel charcuterie board, lettuce wraps and BBQ chicken sliders on special. I had the lettuce wrap and it was pretty good for $5! You order at the hot bar side (there's a giant order here sign) and then you pay at the cafe bar register. Drinks are also on special during happy hour - also $5! I got the white wine and my friend got a bottle of Heineken. read more

It's tries to subliminally to be the icon of Yaletown but it isn't as it has corporate roots and not run by a native born Vancouverite good guy owner operator . Out of Towners don't know this which adds to the facade. The Grocery , Meat , produce , bakery and florist selection is specialty and international . There is a self serve cafeteria , The selection has daily specials , you can compliment your meal with wine and beer too , it's crowded and sometimes the check out line is too long . There is an express checkout but it gets clogged up as it doubles as a coffee, beer and wine checkout . It's annoying as the customers in front of you prolong contact with the checkout person on dialoging what they want. It's compounded when the customers cannot speak English properly and it's mostly the invisible minority Eastern European customers with their strong Slavic accents . We only go , not for the food but for convenience. Parking is reimbursable but only for one hour which is not long enough and often deters us from coming . read more

*UPDATED REVIEW* Since we enjoyed the breakfast there last time we decided to go again and actually got exactly the same two dishes. They were so different in quality that it wasn't even the same dish. The Salmon/Cream cheese omelet had no cream cheese, so I asked the counter clerk and she reluctantly squirted some white stuff on it in the back. The egg itself tasted like rubber and the salmon was super dehydrated. The sourdough was so stale that I didn't touch it and bought a croissant from the bakery instead. The multigrain from the Urban Fare breakfast was going moldy and I had to spit it out. (The pics you see below are from the previous time, in which the breakfast was good). I guess the last time where the food was enjoyable was sadly a glitch. The staff are on a regular basis rude and useless and literally run from any sight of a customer near by. A well earned 1 star....and even that is generous. read more

This store had gone downhill in the past 10 years I have been patronizing it. First and foremost their escalator has been out of commission for the past month. Consequently, if you do a large shop and use a cart there is no way to access your car in the underground parking. The cart locks the wheels as soon as you get on it. There is no elevator as an alternative means to get down. Tonight, I had to drag four laden grocery bags down the frozen escalator after waiting for several customers ahead of me being helped by one solitary cashier. This was at 8:00 PM. Whom ever is the manager at this store should be raked over the coals for how customer unfriendly this supermarket has sunk to. It is conveniently located for me, but the total lack of service will likely drive me to use SavOn on the other side of Cambie Street bridge. At the very least their escalator always seems to be operational. read more

In general, the prices here are too high for me to buy a ton of actual groceries when I come here, but I'll buy little things that are hard to find elsewhere from the grocery section (they have a brand of vegan yogurt here that I like). What I really like about this store is the cafe, which is like, a step above grocery stores cafes that are already a step above usual grocery store cafes. The main thing being is that this is not just a few takeout counters - they have a salad bar and prepared hot foods, but they will serve it to you on house dining ware, and there's even a small menu of made-to-order dishes! Nothing vegetarian on that menu which is sad for me, but plenty of vegetarian stuff from the hot food counter which is probably just as good. And alcoholic drinks (including house-made cocktails) are served! So it's basically an actual counter-service restaurant which is very nice. I had poked my head into the store a few times but only recently got around to actually trying this restaurant and I was really impressed. I got a spanakopita and a side of madras curry couscous. I was really impressed with how flaky the spanakopita pastry was, and the couscous was very flavourful! I got a slice of vegan carrot cake from the bakery counter to enjoy with my meal, which isn't part of the restaurant area so unfortunately they pack everything to go. The cake was disappointing compared to how high quality the restaurant food was; it was really sweet (I know it's cake, but it was too much) and was a little bit oily but at the same time dry. I generally like vegan baked goods, but I wonder if the non-vegan baked goods here are better. They had some cake slices that were way too big for me but would be great for 2 or even 3 people that looked seriously beautiful. The grocery prices are high, but the restaurant prices are actually pretty good! Dinner and dessert only $16. There was one person in the restaurant who I thought reacted impatiently when I had a menu question, but otherwise the staff is usually pretty friendly. I like the atmosphere of the whole place in general, it's a very unique vibe for a grocery store. They had a singer/guitarist performing one time! Also there are sometimes samples of local brands the people giving them out are always very chill - eager to talk about the product but they don't try to pressure you into buying it. read more

Hit and miss on deals here. So this Urban Fare is located in Yaletown. It's surrounded by condos and so it gets most of its business from the condos. Overall, it has everything that you expect at any Urban Fare. Prices are definitely at the higher end. It is very convenient for people living nearby. read more

I'm only reviewing on the loafs!! My mom brought back a Banana loaf chocolate Mac nut $9.99 and lemon loaf poppy seed $12.99. I had to have it with coffee so made that coffee and warmed up my loafs. Yesterday i picked up a chicken pot pie at Urban Fare Yaletown, by far it was the worst pie i ever ate in my life, and i mean my life. The crust was paper thin and had a carboard taste, there was probably 3 pieces of chicken and it cost $6.99 for a small tray that looks bigger but is a mirage created by smart people to give illusions of bigger to the eye of the buyer. read more

During my visit to Vancouver I felt like shopping for groceries to prepare some food at the apt. Coming to Urban Fare was a treat as they have a widely stocked inventory of just the things you need and more. I thought to myself there are very few markets in the city but Urban Fare is widely spread out throughout Vancouver. One thing that amazed me was their meat section. I notice different variations of marinated meats. This is something you don't normally see in markets. Also dry aged beef were available at certain locations. read more

The broccoli was supposed to be a "Price Lock" item until Jan.1. However, they did not have the sale price tag as advertised. We were hesitated to talk to the staff because the broccoli was not shown in the "Price Lock" items section in the most recent flyer; it was in the previous flyer. Also, the flyer was confusing. The flyer had the wrong date for the "Price Lock" period - "Price Lock" offers were until Jan. 1, Wednesday; but Jan.1 is not a Wednesday. The flyers during the "Price Lock" period should include ALL the items of the "Price Lock" offers. Otherwise, it will discourage customers from getting all the offers. read more

I love Urban Fare. They carry all the usual grocery items, but they also have a ton unique products that you cant find anywhere else. People complain that it's so expensive, but I don't think it is. This location has an especially great bulk section, and a nice spacious deli to sit down and enjoy a snack! read more

This is not a review on the quality of the food that is sold in the store. The food is good and I feel safe eating the produce at this location. My major complaint is the staff! They are extremely rude, loud and disrespectful! The manager of the store is ignorant and treats the customers badly. Years ago, this place was excellent as far as customer service is concerned, though I noticed that his place started to deteriorate over the last few years. Now it is horrible! If you cannot count on the manager being nice to you, you know that there is something wrong. The manager with the beard is pathetic and should not be in this position. He would be better off in the back of the store where he does not have to interact with people. Really POOR people skills. read more

Could be great. Generally quite good but produce dept is particularly bad...poor quality and very badly managed.

We experienced a very bad customer service at the hot meal section. Two ladies who work at the hot meal section were rude and disrespectful. When I ordered the food, they seemed very inpatient and treated us differently than other customers. As a high end grocery, they should train their staffs as good as their products. Had the $5.49 Avocado Salad Roll with peanut sauce from the sushi bar cooler. The roll is below average portion size and prepared in a double wide format so it's twice as wide that of a typical roll you would get from any other eatery. This creates a challenge when trying to pick it up due to its large size and also dipping the roll into the small peanut sauce container. The unusual wide format also further separates the rolls ingredients so your bites don't capture all the flavours together. Some bites you may get only rice paper and rice noodles. The rice noodles make up the majority of the ingredients and influence the overall flavour of this salad roll. The roll and dipping sauce paired well together. The roll had a sense of freshness with a spicy aftertaste perhaps influenced from the Japanese style sushi bar from where it was purchased. The peanut sauce had a slight tangy flavour with subtle peanut and savory flavours. The roll was prepared on the day of this review. Would like to see Urban Fare offer these rolls in a standard size format. It's my understanding they don't have takeout trays to fit the standard roll size so they prepare it double wide. The peanut sauce could use more peanut flavour. Overall an enjoyable fresh snack offering plenty of rice noodles. Portion size suffered and roll format could improve. Would recommend 3 out of 5 Rolls 214g Unofficial Ingredients: Rice wrapper paper, Rice noodles, Lettuce, Avocado, Carrots, Chives, Mango, Peanut Sauce read more

- very slow service - staff chat with each other instead of helping people in line - overpriced - given bag to bag own groceries - staff lack training in knowing what kind of food they are serving. (BEWARE for anyone with food allergies) - my breakfast wrap was sloppy and soggy - in-store moldy strawberries - misleading labeling: frozen breads are labeled fresh "packaged on" the day they come out of the freezer. Resulting in moldy product before labeled due date. Experience over multiple times. Pros: convenient location to where I live. Please replace with another grocery store! read more

Urban Fare is a decent gourmet grocery store, but I wouldn't say it's outstanding. The produce looked good, the prepared foods looked ok, and the shelves were stocked with all sort of sundries and condiments in pretty packaging. They have an in-house coffee shop and tables which is nice. And they are famous for a VERY expensive loaf of bread from Poulaine, flown in from Paris. Reading all the reviews for this upscale grocery store, I wonder if I went to the same store, as my husband and daughter and I were incredibly impressed with this place! I admit upfront, though, that I'm not a regular, nor did we purchase anything. But we did explore the store and walk through every department and down every aisle, and we thought this place was gorgeous. Yes, the prices were high (very high!) but the foods were all so gourmet and beautifully presented, we felt like we were in a gallery of foodstuff. Beautiful cheeses, and bakery items, and pastas, and charcuterie items, some unique fruits and vegetables that we didn't recognize (and I eat a TON of veggies!), lovely flowers..... I could go on and on. Wandering about this high-end grocery store is a foodie's dream come true. It provided a feast for our senses: the visual displays, the enticing aromas..... The lay-out of the store seems to encourage exploring, and there seemed to be numerous employees on the floor to ask for help if one needed to find specific items. All in all, it was a very pleasurable experience for us. read more

Oh, Urban Fare - the gourmet specialty grocery store owned by Save-On Foods. When I lived in Yaletown, I used to shop here whenever I needed a fancy-pants ingredient, or whenever I needed to put together a charcuterie plate. Although I no longer live nearby, I do work around the corner, and I find myself coming here for a quick lunch at their deli - their wraps and sandwiches are good value. But sometimes it's just a fun place for a stroll, especially if you love food. The cheese section is the best downtown, with imported cheese from Europe and a variety of local artisan cheeses. Likewise, their bakery has a lot of goodies if you're seeking traditional cakes and loaves of bread. If you're looking for a traditional butcher, fishmonger, or even a deli... they've got that too. Fresh pasta, sauces, olives, etc. Each section is set up uniquely and it's all very appealing. A friend once described Urban Fare as 20,000 sqf of condiments, and it makes me laugh every time I think about it. It's true, they do carry a larger selection of olive oils, vinegars, jams, and well... condiments, than any other grocery store I know. The fruit and veggies aren't good value, but they carry items you won't normally find elsewhere, especially when it comes to tropical fruit and forest mushrooms. Sure, Urban Fare is definitely one of the most expensive grocery stores, on par with Whole Foods without the organic, health-food focus. I wouldn't make a habit out of shopping here, but for a on-a-whim foodie adventure, it's fun to get inspired. And it certainly fits the lifestyle of Yaletown, which means, the people-watching's pretty entertaining in the Real Housewives kind of way. read more

Such a lovely grocery store, wish we had one like this in Toronto! All of the produce and products were laid out with care. They offered a big organic section as well as a fresh meat, deli, and cheese counters too. You could pretty much find anything you needed in terms of groceries here. I spent a long time wandering the isles, looking at their various foodstuffs. Ended up with a fruit salad and two bottles of Happy water to take back to my hotel. Fruit salad was totally delicious. The flower section was absolutely stunning. Perhaps a bit pricey at $45 a bouquet but honestly the nicest arrangements I have ever seen in a grocery store. Each bud was perfect (check my photos for reference - gorgeous!). The lady I met at the check out was super sweet and friendly. If I lived in the area, this would definitely be my go to grocery store. read more

This is a nice spot to get gourmet-like or just good quality food on the go. I love stopping in for a decent lunch or appetizer selections. I picked up some fresh sushi - the tuna & salmon were fresh. I like that they have a good variety of sushi & sashimi to choose from. You can watch as the food prep team prepares fresh sushi to be packaged. This is very unlike other grocery stores that have sushi at less than pleasing quality. I also bought some fresh tabouli salad, which tasted great. You can get a fresh sandwich or deli meats, and quite the variety. There's also a great choice of cheeses. There are also other ready made foods, from salads to heated meals. Also, you can obviously pick up most goods that you expect to find at a grocery store. This place is just a step above most stores, but you need to be prepared to pay a bit more. However, many products are reasonably priced. If you're in the area for awhile, you can take your food to the waterfront and absorb some beautiful views. read more

Usually I come in for steaks, organ meats and cow bones for bone broth along with their fresh varieties of herbs. Lemon bar from the bakery is a must try and love the array of cheese and creams they have here. UF has a better selection of gourmet foods then Fresh Street, plus their hot foods are a bonus. There are days my spouse and I go there just to have breakfast or lunch. Today, we decided to grab a coffee there before going in to pick up a few items, as we made our way in a homeless guy was making his way out with a basket of food stolen. There was a commotion at the entrance, as a male staff member caught the thieve and confronted him. The staff member was polite and firm with this thieve, taking back the basket of goods but the thieve was not having it, he was yelling and making a scene and trying to grab back the basket. It was scary, and it was pretty brave of the staff member to do what he did, but I would hate to see him get hurt. UF should hire a security to monitor the front entrance and to deter incidents like this. I know Fresh Street and London Drugs @ Vancouver House have security at the front just to deter thieves like this. I live closer to Fresh Street then UF, but I rather walk the distance to UF just to buy my grocery and to enjoy the hot foods there. read more

I had to say I was there, waiting to pay, to which she replied that she would be coming. I then paid, and while doing so, she was doing something else. Update Jan 4, still at it: - go to cashier, bag of apples on special - she rings it in, $7 - I hand her my card and ask her if the apples have received the discount. She says yes. Again, hard to tell - register in kilos, displayed prices in pounds... - It looks wrong, so I take note of the price on the electronic screen, leave the cashir then check it. - Sure enough, charged $4.30/kg, discounted to $3.30 - complain to the cashier, again telling her they need to fix this, and get my refund, but only because I knew what to look out for. Guys, get your act together and be honest!!! Today, Oct 22, I caught Urban Fare's cash register software ripping its customers off for the 2nd time... (I will remove this review when I feel my concerns have been corrected) As you know, Urban Fare has the standard loyalty-card-vs-normal-customer prices. I find that annoying, but many retailers do that. However, what I've noticed is that, if you hand over your loyalty card in the midst of paying for your stuff, the prices do NOT get corrected and stay at their normal inflated price. Case in point: 2.99$/lb apples, discounted to 1.99$/lb for card members. After I handed in my card, and after it was scanned and I got it back, I saw that the price for the apples was still left as it was originally rung up, i.e. $2.99. I had to call the teller's attention to it before it got corrected, which he managed to do by doing something else beyond just scanning my loyalty card . I told him this was totally unacceptable - though not his fault as an individual - this is a software mistake, intentional or not. Asked him to raise that with his manager. This is hard to catch - the amounts are small and grocery prices are displayed in pounds, with 2 rates loyalty vs standard. Then the cash register calculates them in kg, making it even more difficult to figure out. Easy to miss it. Conveniently in Urban Fare's favor. Same exact thing happened at that same location yesterday, different teller, same problem. I wasn't sure, so I didn't feel like making a fuss then. Today I was on the lookout and, yup, did it again. Very sloppy, possibly dishonest to boot. read more

The original, where it started Urban Fare. The grocery store for me that started all the posh in regards to shopping for your food needs for home. I remember coming here when it first opened, and when I am around the neighbourhood, I still come, even just for a coffee instead of going to the Starbucks that is next door. I do not just come here for the groceries, I come here for the cooked food! It's a great experience, think of it as a high end cafeteria with some great special fixings everyday of the week. Some morning before work I would come for a smoked salmon eggs benedict. The coffee is pretty good too, where I would buy it, and either stay in, or walk toward the pier to look at the view of the Cambie Street bridge. If you do come for the groceries, they have many choices in regards to things like bottled water (Voss, Fiji to name a few). When you enter their chocolate isle you have an abundance of selection as well. Just remember when you get to the till, you are paying higher prices than normal, just think of Urban Fare as the "Banana Republic" of grocery stores in the Jim Pattison family of grocery stores! read more

Yes, overpriced compared to other supermarkets that are further away from the core, however the prices are on par for it's location and comparable markets in the area. We shop here quite regularly, and generally enjoy the shopping experience here. As others have mentioned the cheese options are terrific, but so are the deli and meat departments. The cons would be the the produce area - there is always a traffic jam in this area, they need to re-route it somehow; and the cashiers, there is so little room in this area, it always feels cramped and awkward. If you'll be shopping here regularly get a save-on card for discounts and point collecting. Great coffee bar too. read more

My favourite one of all; it's where all the action is, & convenient right off the False Creek 'seawall' where one can drop by for a drink or washroom break after a good day of walking/running/rollerblading. Like the communal table after getting your food from the deli. Had the breakfast & lasagna, pricey but u do get the upscale touch lol. You sure don't come here expecting deals. Also I like to browse their dessert/pastry section, macarons here too but not Thierry-worthy. Own pharmacy too. Urban Fare might be a great grocery store, but they won't going to gain a favorable review from me so long as they have employees who cannot count money. I had an unfortunate encounter with Tiffany, a young female who was staffing the Urban Fare's coffee bar at 9:30 pm on a Monday evening, August 12, 2019. I, along with my wife and a friend, all of us who are tourists from the U.S., had ordered 2 small hot chocolates and a large mocha coffee. I added up the prices of our drinks from the menu board and quickly calculated that it would cost somewhere around $11.08, so I reached in my wallet and pulled out two $10 bills, as I had nothing smaller and handed it to Tiffany along with the parking ticket for the underground garage directly underneath the Urban Fares grocery store. According to the sign in the parking garage, a validation from the local merchants would be good for an additional one free hour of parking, so I asked Tiffany for a parking validation. She quickly stated that the store did not give out parking validations, but she could instead provide a $2.00 discount for presenting the parking ticket to her. So, I said "Oh.. okay, that's great. Thanks very much." As I was explaining parking validation situation to my wife and our friend, Tiffany gives me my change of 92 cents. I then look at the receipt. It's $9.08, two dollars then what I originally had planned on paying, thanks to the parking discount. So now I'm thinking, where is the other $10? She put $20 in the register, but gave me 92 cents back on a $9.08 bill. So by now, Tiffany is hard at work making my coffee on her expresso machine. Even though I'm calling her by name (I had noticed her name badge) to tell her of her error, she doesn't seem to hear me or she's ignoring me. So I decide to wait until she finishes making our drinks. Finally when she returns back to the wait counter, I inform her that I had given her $20 and she owes me $10. She looks at me rather unpleasantly and asks "why would you give me $20 when the bill was only $9.08?", to which I respond, "I gave you $20 because the bill was $11.08 before you gave me a $2.00 discount for the parking garage ticket." She then insists that I gave her only $10.00. Unfortunately, this was not the case. When you're a foreign tourist, you're usually very conscientious of how much money you're holding. I knew exactly what I gave her which was CAD$20. But because of her poor cash handling skills, she thought it was CAD$10. The end story here is that Tiffany refused to acknowledge or correct her error. She first accused me of being dishonest which is probably the very worst thing you should say to a paying customer, to which I told her, "No, you simply made a mistake and didn't count the money." She kept insisting that it made no sense for me to hand her $20 for a $9.08 bill, while refusing to acknowledge that she had discounted the bill by $2.00 to account for the parking garage discount. We went on and on about this until finally she said her store manager could authorize a return, but he wasn't around. She offered to take my phone number and If her register showed a $10.00 overage in the morning, they would return the funds to me. But because we were leaving for the U.S. early the next day, there was no point in pursuing this remedy. Perhaps it was my own damn fault for laughing and joking with my wife and friend, and not paying attention the transaction at hand. I should have announced how much money I was handing to her or better yet, I should have used a credit card. The one thing I noticed when I purchased Canadian paper bills that they are thin and they stick to each other, so during my vacation, I was very careful to separate and count each paper bill when using Canadian currency, but apparently, there are merchants here who aren't as careful, with Tiffany being one of those noted exceptions. Tiffany, if you can't count money, you shouldn't be handling money. And that, my friends, is the reason why you need to be careful when you shop at Urban Fares. You might get screwed out of your hard earned money while being accused of being dishonest. read more
