The management doesn't stand behind their products. I tried to take an item back but, because it had been opened, they refused to refund me. How am I supposed to tell it's off if I don't taste it? Nope, they have a ridiculous policy that if it has been opened, there's no refund, no exceptions. Dealt with a rude, sarcastic guy name Mark who spoke to me in a mocking tone. I love this grocery store. It's not the closest grocery store to me, but still close and across from my gym. They're open until midnight 12 days/week and the store is always clean and bright. They have great selections and an amazing deli. They also have great prices for meat, and they sell portions for a single person, which is often hard to find at some place. Sometimes I really just want 1 chicken breast or 3 chicken kegs, and I know they always have it. Their security is good enough to keep things civilized but not their weirdos that follow you around and stare at you for no reason. Most importantly they have paper bags, and they actually bag your groceries for you! So many grocery stores these days force you to buy yet another reusable bag if you just stopped by on a whim and didn't bring a bag with you, and even then they make you bag all your groceries yourself. Bagging groceries is a skill I don't have! They know what to put together, how to balance the weight of the bags evenly if you're walking, how to make sure things don't get crushed etc. It may seem silly but this is a big deal to me as I hate just trying to randomly stuck stuff into a bag and hoping for the best. I love this store. It's 2 stories and full of wonderful food and has lots of specials. Also, they've got a great selection of vegan foods, international foods and dairy free food. Really exceptional selection. I also got some fantastic steaks on sale here. Service was excellent and everyone was super helpful. Store is clean and there is an elevator if you use a cart (there's an escalator if all you have is a basket.) It doesn't open until 8am so don't go too early! And do check out their gourmet food near the deli! We bought some amazing Thai soup there and some wonderful cheeses! Produce was also excellent with lots of choices and they made it easy to buy Canadian products. read more

Nice little market near our Airbnb that had everything we needed at a good price. Liked all the local items they had that could be perfect for gifting as well. My favorite part was how they sold little pieces of cheese that is perfect for one at a really good price. read more

Super conveniently located in the heart of everything! Funny thing, I actually walked here during dinner at a Thai place across the street! I just wanted to check the market out while my party was ordering desserts. There are two stories here. All the fresh produce and bakeries, cold drinks are at the lower level. This is one of the 11 grocery stores that I've shopped at in the downtown / west end area! Right on the downtown / west end boarder it's a great central location, the validate parking from the lot below the store (entry off smith), and the bus stops is right in front of the store and runs every five or so minutes during pesk times! You don't have a ton of supermarket options in the West End, and IGA runs this place like they know it. Still, while incredibly wonky (like the entrance and the exit being in separate sides of the building? Like security at an airport? Really?) and inconsistent in the quality of their offerings, the selection isn't too bad. I was able to get most of the essentials I needed here at inoffensive prices (other IGA stores in other cities tend to be horribly overpriced). If I wanted or needed snacks while in town, this store had a pretty good selection. Also, while the cashier line (it's a collector-distributor setup where the front of the line gets an automated call to go to a particular register) does get stupid-long due to the setup, the cashiers do move that line along quickly. I never had to wait all that long no matter how long the line got. That said, the store has a lot of silly bottlenecks due to the cramped layout. If you're upstairs it's not too bad, but a lot of the downstairs area is often unwalkable. Plus, as far as I can tell, the 2nd floor doesn't appear to be accessible for wheelchairs. And the escalator has a pillar right down the middle, so if you have crutches or a walker... good luck! Or maybe just shop at Safeway on Denman instead. Still, it isn't bad otherwise. read more

I can't rate this place highly despite the fact that it is well organized, clean, and has relatively good service. The prices are through the roof. I don't know what it is about this location but I have never seen some prices for groceries as I have here. Sometimes the sales are good, especially on meats, but I find that they often run out quickly. And there are times that the lineups for the cashiers have about 20 to 30 people in them, or at least that's what it seems like. Recently I was there and saw piles of umbrella covers - all plastic - from inside the store, thrown onto the ground at the exit. A simple sign or even a garbage can on the inside would help that? read more

Always shop at IGA when staying in Vancouver. Great prices, lots of prepared foods, fresh produce.

We were at the cashier counter and we were taking the items out of the basket to put them onto the counter. The cashier mumbled under her breath, "You're throwing items at me" while staring at the counter. There was no basis for her to be so rude because we were simply putting items onto the counter. You can check the camera surveillance for confirmation. This was the same cashier who gave us the same condescending attitude a year ago. Ok selection but a more limited smaller supermarket. Grumpy and off hand service at the deli counter. We wanted several different items and had to call her back twice after she gave us our purchases and turned away before we could ask for anything else, and without checking if we had all we needed. Salads very pricey too although look good. Very basic selection of flowers. Overall a typical inner city small supermarket. When traveling with my clan, finding a market/grocery near our hotel or airbnb is usually the first thing on our agenda. As luck would have it, IGA is literally next door to our hotel (La Grande Residence / Sutton Place Hotel) in downtown Vancouver. And even better, our parking garage was in the same building .... bonus! Just guessing here, but it seemed that the prices were not all that horrible considering that it is a downtown market. I might be wrong however, because we're Americans and at the moment the exchange rate - for us - is great. Although I'm sure that will change .... probably sooner than later. Nice selection of items. Two floors. Friendly staff. If you're a tourist, like we were, and are looking for those boxes of maple cookies to take home as gifts, they have them here. I'm not a fan of IGA in general, as it's quite expensive, but I specifically dislike this IGA for a couple of reasons: 1. The layout is awful. There are two entrances (one on Burrard Street and one on Smithe Street), but you can only exit via Smithe Street. So if you pop in for a moment to check the price on something but decide not to purchase anything (because the price is so damn high!), you can't quickly exit; you must push your way past people lining up at the checkouts in order to get to the Smithe Street exit. Also, the way the checkouts are set up don't leave enough room for people to line up or easily get to another checkout. In fact, due to the layout of the checkouts and the resulting lack of space, it's difficult to determine where the lineups are for each checkout, or to see if another checkout is available/has a shorter line. It's just pure chaos. Third, the escalator to the top floor is not only so narrow that you can't get past people, but on the first floor, there's a POLE right in front of the escalator! Perhaps it's to prevent people from taking shopping carts or strollers on the escalator (not that they would fit, because it is so narrow), but it makes it difficult to squeeze past the pole with a shopping basket, bag, or purse. God forbid you have mobility issues, or are fat. 2. The cashiers are idiots. Once, a cashier GRABBED my credit card and "tapped" it. Um, how about letting ME, the credit card holder, make the payment? And today, a cashier THREW AWAY MY CREDIT CARD RECEIPT!!! I had to return something because it was moldy (I thought they'd hassle me about the refund but they didn't), and since I paid with my credit card, I had the item refunded to my card. I showed the cashier and manager my original receipt (I think it's poor customer service and employee empowerment when a manager is needed for small, simple refunds), they did the refund, and the cashier gave me the refund receipt. I asked for my original purchase receipt, and she said she had thrown it away, but that I had my refund receipt. Even though I have my refund receipt, I still need my original purchase receipt! Why would getting my refund receipt negate my need for my original receipt?! They are two different receipts, and being a credit card receipt, it's especially important for me to keep, so I can verify my purchases on my credit card statement. (Yes, I'm old fashioned--I check my purchases on my statements every month, thus confirming I haven't been overcharged or scammed.) So because the cashier THREW AWAY MY CREDIT CARD RECEIPT, she had to spend several minutes (when I was in a hurry to get to my fitness class) looking through the garbage, before finally finding my receipt, crumpled up. Why would a cashier just throw away someone's receipt?! What the hell? As I walked away from the checkout in annoyance, I saw the manager who had issued the refund, and told him what had happened. He said that cashiers should absolutely not throw away people's receipts. So, in summary, I hate this IGA because it's really expensive, the store layout and design are really inconvenient, and (some of) the cashiers are morons who don't deserve to make more than minimum wage. The only reason why I ever set foot in this store is because it sells a particular product I can't easily get elsewhere (although I can order it online), and it's right beside my gym and literally the only grocery store en route from my gym to my boyfriend's house, so if I need to grab a few items for dinner, I have no other option but this IGA. Selection is pretty nice here. They have escalators between the 2 floors as well. Staff are friendly and helpful, though spread out a little too much. My biggest complaint though is that prices here are pretty high. So unless you are in a pinch, I'd recommend going elsewhere (ie not downtown) for your groceries. read more

My go to Grocery store - simply due to the fact it is directly across the street from where I live. Oh and its open until midnight 7 nights a week. Not cheap, but not too overly pricey. Well actually it is fairly pricy. At times they have promotions where you can get a $5 gift card. Or free hot cross buns. They also have had collect 600$ worth of stamps to get some wine glasses that break rather quickly, or some knives. Knives is the current promo. I got 2 already and have another $800 worth of stamps to get 2 or 3 more. Oh I just did the math. How depressing ! I spent 1400$ to get 4 or 5 knives? Hmmmmm Oh, and speaking of stamps and promos- you have to remind / tell the staff about them. Usually twice. They never know, remember, or can be bothered. The staff....ummmm what an odd bunch. One cashier has zero personality, and he is pretty slow. He needs to be reminded at least 3 times to give you your stamps or gift card ect. Another one is always flustered & I swear he is on crystal meth from the way he acts . Another is down right rude. I refuse to go to his check out. Management however seems pretty cool. Just when you have spent way too much money on one meal, you see the guys begging for change on the way out, AKA "The Exit Tax" Just one more way you have to (over) pay for living in Downtown Vancouver ! read more

This is a great little market in downtown Vancouver. The prices seem a little high but not astronomical. The store was overall very clean and had a good selection of items all over. I think I hit it during a busy time and had to wait a while to check out but even though it was a high traffic time, the cashier was friendly and helpful. I'll probably stop back by at some point on my stay in the city! Update: we've been here a few days now and have stopped by the IGA many times because it's close to where we are staying and their food is delicious! The tuna sandwich and garden chickpea salads are wonderful and cheap if you need a quick easy meal. Highly recommend this place for visitors in Vancouver (and locals too). read more

I've been looking for a grocery store that I could shop on-line and have it delivered near me for ages. When I googled, for some reason this one didn't come up or I missed it. Wanted to find one, not because of Covid, it's because I absolutely can't stand grocery shopping - I'd rather do anything than that. Plus I hate it so much I usually end up with just milk for coffee in my fridge, and doing a big shop without a car builds muscles but not in a good way. It's a great, very user friendly website where you can tick if you want the Shopper to pick a substitute if they're out of it.....or not.....or pick your own. Space for little notes, I put things like "green bananas if u have". You can pick the day you want delivery and the time slot. Everything was absolutely perfect and they keep you informed as to what's happening with the order. Yay! I can put stuff in my basket whenever I think of it and can order at any time of day or night in my jammies! Yes, it might be a few more $ than Safeway, but hey....not enough to get me in person there any more. read more

Pro: Beautiful market. Much bigger than the other locations near by Con: only one star because the cashiers don't have great altitudes, esp a guy name mark. We are traveling with a baby and we pushed the baby stroller here in need of getting some baby food and diaper, which is located upstairs. We circled around and couldn't find the elevator anywhere so I went to ask the cashier- mark. He was extremely rude with me. He answered with obvious irritation in his tone "over there!" Without any directions, not even pointing. We are not from here so obviously I did not know where over there is. I asked politely "where? Near the escalator?" And he yelled, "no! Over there" and rolled his eyes. I'm so disappointed at how rude Canadians are. My husband later experienced the same rudeness when he went to pay. read more

Very pricey, not a good selection of products, and the people that work there know nothing about their products. the employees are not at all useful. Not rude, just useless and ignorant of their own products. i go there only as a necessity, although I live very close by. I came down to this IGA to pick up and support the Asian Family promotion and giveaway! Since I was there, I decided to pick up my groceries too! The space was well kept and the shelves were neat. I originally asked the cashier if they had carried a certain type of bread which he mentioned no but will look into it. Then he noticed that I had a coupon for it so he took a look at it and immediately recognized the packaging and motioned where to find it.., just that extra step helped saved me time! read more

Sadly, the IGA stores in the west end richly deserve the bad reviews they are getting rather consistently. I often go to the one on Burrard. The service is terrible. The women at the cash registers are hit and miss in terms of blatant grumpiness. I have come to dislike going to the store, though I sometimes have no choice. They seem to depend on that. Recently spotted a bag of dried beans that was full of black bugs crawling about in the bag. Showed it to one of the stock people. I was not even slightly rude or pushy about it. The employee obviously did not care. That really obvious bag of bugs was finally removed a full ten days after I mentioned it. IGA does not care about customers, at all. I am being generous with the two star rating. I am buying an electric bicycle and when I do, IGA will no longer be a store I frequent. Safeway is far from perfect but it beats the heck out of IGA these days. read more

The worst service ever. IGA was my favorite store when I lived in Vancouver, West Side . That one on West Broadway. This one, on Smythe and Barkley, that I am talking about, not even close. I had bad experience with cashier, and I telephoned customer service. After long time waiting on the phone, I got him ( he claimed himself as a manager too ) I was so happy to talk with someone who can understand things and make difference. But, disappointment.. I tried explain problem I had with cashier, who was rude, and the reason I complained. And he didn't pay attention what was my point, and he treated like I don't understand anything. This downtown grocery store has some real positive aspects and a few negatives, too, so I'd rate this store 3.5 stars, ideally (perhaps closer to 4 stars on a good day). In other words, it's an average to slightly better than average grocery store. Here's the lowdown: -awesome downtown location. There aren't any grocery stores in the vicinity, but quite a few hotels are nearby and lots of residential condos and apartments. This place is the nearest food market for staples and more. -late night hours. -clean, large (two levels), ample selection of basics and a bit more. -ready-made meals in the deli area, small but decent salad bar, nice display of cakes and bakery goods. The downsides? Prices are high (even by Vancouver standards. Probably a bit less than at Urban Fare, though, but there is a MUCH greater selection of foods at UF so you pay for that). If you're looking for friendly and/or helpful employees here, it's hit or miss. (I've been here four times and have encountered some very nice and helpful folks behind the counters and at the cashiers, and some rather abrupt and aloof folks, too). The stationary vertical pole at the bottom of the up escalator is a nightmare accident waiting to happen. There are a few entrances into the store on the main level but you can only exit through one door (which we discovered when we went to the non-exit door, of course, with tons of groceries in hand. Love this two storey market with everything from everyday groceries to whimsical little snacks and treats. The service is friendly and quick and I've rarely had to wait too long to check out. While selection isn't huge, I've never had an issue finding what I was looking for. My only gripe is that a lot of the prices are a lot more (double) than other grocery chains, but I suppose the convenient downtown location commands a premium. read more

Not that I won't get my groceries here again. But can anyone tell me why when I ask to double bag 2 paper bags, the clerk puts $80.00 worth of groceries in one paper bag and tells me the handles won't hold the weight and that I should walk holding the bag underneath to support the weight. She argues with me on how I should do this, unknown to her I have to walk half a mile home. I ask for an extra paper bag and she argues that I should walk home with my hand underneath, finally she relents and gives it to me. It's a shut the front door experience for me. Milk is a ripoff here. This is the only store in Vancouver that charges more than $6 for 4 litres of milk. The people living around here don't care about being price gouged. Everything else is expensive too. The cost to buy all ingredients to make one meal often cost over $20. read more

The candy aisle is great. Oh they sell Haribo candy to M&Ms to healthy prana (sp?). They also sell soda, salad dressing, produce and veggies. This store targets tourists and locals, some of the cashiers will charge you twice for the same product, I believe they know that most tourists and some single locals dont verify their receipts. This store used to make everything there in the "bistro" (and I am only rating their bisto) but tonight they only had my favorite (mac and cheese) in a pre packaged form. Fully sealed and like preserved or something. Hmmmm. Well, The food, although very commercialized and unfresh looking, still tasted half ok. You need to microwave your own stuff after you get it which makes it feel very 7-11 like. The fruit salad was fresh and juicy though. Complaint: I swear to god the woman working there was drunk. She was rowdier than a gaggle of teenage boys after watching an action movie. She was abrupt and loud and insulting the customers thinking she was pretty funny. WTF?
