We tried to weigh the bags of broccoli using the self check-out. However, the machine showed the message of 'Please remove the item in the bagging area' repeatedly. Thus, the employee came to us and asked us for the last item that was scanned. We were unsure of which bag of broccoli so we just gave her one. Then she removed the last item on the screen and scanned that bag of broccoli. Then she walked away without an apology. We saw on the screen that that bag of broccoli was not the last item because I remembered that the price was different. So we gave her the correct bag of broccoli and told her the one that she scanned was wrong. She looked irritated and said she needed to void the whole transaction for us and weighed everything again for us. She spoke in a very condescending tone and acted as if we forced her to do something. I told her I could scan the items myself because I did not want to trouble her. She looked annoyed and said she would do it for me. However, the sale price did not appear underneath the original price on the screen because she did not scan my points card first. Consequently, the total sale price appeared at the end instead of appearing underneath each item, and this was confusing. We wanted to see the sale price after each item so we told her to cancel the whole transaction and I would weigh everything myself again and scan my points card first. She did not understand this and told us to go to the cashier. We moved to another self check-out station instead but I dropped a bag of broccoli onto the floor. She pointed to the other self check-out station and ordered us to put the broccoli there as if we were children. Her tone and gesture were despicable and there was no reason to treat customers that way. We put the broccoli where she wanted as courtesy, and we departed because she was unreasonable. As we exited, she began screaming, 'You did something wrong' because she was embarrassed. This was not the first time that the self check-out machine was problematic. Moreover, the employees' attitude was unacceptable towards customers. She was not friendly from the beginning and there was no reason for her to scream like an animal. It was the machine's problem but she made it appear as our fault when we did nothing wrong. Would she have been so condescending if we were old men wearing suits? None of this would have happened if the machine worked properly. P.S. The plastic bags in the produce area are very thin, thinner than other grocery stores'. They ripped easily and this was why I had dropped the broccoli. They should have thicker plastic bags for the produce so that customers would not be embarrassed and inconvenience. (The time was between 1pm to 1:30pm on Oct.4th and the employee was a short, overweight, Indian woman.) read more

A great e.g. of "hardly working" on the evening of Sept 29, 2023 in Riley Park. I guess this driver's social media efforts were more important than working. He spent at least an hour, parked the wrong way, idling on Quebec St. in front of a senior's home, taking up 1-1/2 parking spots and stinking up the air. This is the closest grocery store (that isnt Whole Foods) in my neighbourhood so i find myself here a lot. Each time has been a pleasant experience. I would HIGHLY suggest getting their rewards card because it is actually incredibly useful. They always have pretty decent sales if you carry the card and also a good point system. If you download their app you can see how many points you have and what you can use it towards. I think the location is also incredibly ideal. You can go to the hardware store, department store, go for a liquor run, pick up any electronics from best buy, etc. read more

2949 Main Street Save On Foods. I have been shopping here for over a decade. I am a senior and I often buy the large boxes of Duraflame logs in the winter which are INCONVENIENTLY located at the back of the store. A couple of the senior front end staff have taken issue with me putting the 50 pound or so box MYSELF into the rolling cart and loading it into a car MYSELF because the weight damages the wheels. Fair enough. I have to have a loony in my pocket or wait in the long line to get one and imagine putting a 50 pound or so box in a shopping cart and trying to hoist it out. Anyways, today a senior staff member ( who I recently saw going to get her 15 year cake) scurried over to my check out person and cupped her hand and whispered into her ear while I was literally 3 feet away and looking directly at me. Like a kid in a schoolyard. After she left I asked my checkout person what her problem was? She said she "doesn't want you to take the cart outside." As if I didn't know ...and I wasn't going to do.. When she saw me asking my checkout clerk what she was on about.... again she scurried over and asked "Do you want car service? Do you want car service? " TEN years and it's the first time I've ever been asked about wanting car service. Just incredibly rude and here's a couple of suggestions, Put the LOGS AT THE FRONT OF THE STORE with a small flat dolly for self service like I have been suggesting for over 10 years. Another suggestion DON'T CARRY THE LOGS AT ALL. Instead of blaming the customer why not try to IMPROVE things for your customer. This is a place of business relying on customers ----not your own living room. Tone deaf mentality. One more suggestion...perhaps for some 15 years is enough. I really only think about this Save On when I'm going home from work, taking advantage of their sales, and also their parking. I remember when this thing opened with the building not too long ago and it probably just get's lost in the heap of supermarkets in a 5 block radius, everybody has got to get in right. A shoppers paradise if your about only shopping for the deals as you have Safeway up the block in City Squre, No Frills in the old Office Depot, Whole Foods across the street, there's another big box around here for everyone. So, for all of you who have a car, there's parking here, it's reimbursed, I wouldn't call it FREE. You spend $6 (yes.. they raised it by a buck, clearly stated downstairs!) and they take it off your bill, they don't give you a toonie to pay back the machine, they just mark your ticket with a pen that says you have redeemed it at checkout! Just incase your wondering, hey, where'd my money go? The front entrance usually displays their big sale items, garage doors open up, nice welcoming entrance. Once you walk in your welcomed by the produce, and actually a nice deli where you can buy your prepared foods, and eat there, or just take it outside to wherever you gotta go. Standard Save On with everything you need, and points to collect. They also have a pharmacy, sell lotto, and a huge frozen fridge section if your a one finger button cooking bandit! The one cool thing about this one, for the workers, is the tills/conveyor belts, they adjust depending on the height of the cashier, it was a cool thing I got to witness, as one worker who was switching shifts (and was taller) checked out, and was replaced by one considerably shorter, there's a button that brought the whole workstation down, I wonder what other grocery stores have this? read more

I don't know if you guys are the ones with the deliveries for downtown Vancouver, but I am glad that I'm not the only one who has had issues. Witnessed one of your drivers freak out at a security guard who simply told the driver to please park on the street and not on the middle of a walkway. The guard was berated and yelled at by a large black bald male. Who insisted he stated he didn't like to be told what to do. For a second I thought he was going to take a swing! I had a similar encounter with another delivery guy who insisted my friend accept a bin he never ordered, same attitude and aggressive stance. Since then, we've done our shopping elsewhere to save on stress since you guys love hiring bad attitude. read more

Is anyone even managing or running this place? I rarely go because it's always chaos. Yesterday was no exception - no baskets at the front door for starters. Three of the half dozen things I wanted were expired or within a day or two so passed on those. Some empty spots on shelves and in produce section. The lineups at cash snaked into the aisles and carts and baskets were abandoned as people gave up waiting. I know staffing is hard but if Jimmy walked into this store, I'm sure he would get the message. There was no one at Customer Service so I asked if I could pay there for my few items. Had to abandon the two pieces of fruit since there's no scale. I've been to grocery stores all over the world (including India and China), and this place is easily the worst. read more

I'm a fan of this grocery store but there's definitely room for improvement. I like the cleanliness of the store and the selection of foods they offer. They have a good bulk food section and a great frozen food department. The prices, in general, are better than Urban Fare and a LOT better than Whole Foods. (Oddly enough, their "MOR" reward card is also accepted at Urban Fare. Same mother company, I guess. Funny, though, I've never had any prices lowered when my card was scanned. I was told I'm accumulating points whenever I make a purchase in their stores, but no-one is able to tell me what "reward" these points might bring. Such an odd program....). I've two main gripes with this store: one, in all the times I've been here, not once have I encountered a friendly check-out clerk. They've all been aloof and cold. Also, I don't like paying for parking, for the privilege of shopping here. If you're here over an hour, even with their "validation", it costs $6. That's a lot! At least, in my book, it is. And when you make a large food order, it behooves you to bring a car. So there's that. I now try to pop in here briefly for one or two items when I'm in the neighborhood (usually getting something at the Canadian Tire next door), and I opt to do the bulk of my grocery shopping elsewhere (usually at Costco). read more

Shopped here a few times as it's walking distance, but have not written a review. I was hoping that the non-existent management would fix their problems, but they continue to linger after 6 months. Yesterday, it was a Sunday, and I was expecting it to be quite busy, but not the chaos that was to be at the checkouts. The big problem is that there are only four regular checkouts, a few express lanes and about 6 self serve. The regular checkouts were jammed, and no one was using the self serve. Good, no one should. Hello, Save-On, get rid of those self serve, no one likes them and we're not employed by you, but still pay high prices for groceries. There's absolutely no lane control. There should be one line for the regular checkouts, and someone should be directing people accordingly. As it was, there appeared to be a line, but then people were jumping in ahead. That employee handing out cookies should have been a line ambassador. You (Save-On) know you have a problem, and you think cookies are going to fix it? And just to top it off, a woman, who sounded like she was from the UK, presented a traveller's cheque for her groceries. The clerk had no idea how to process it and had to switch places with another employee who took a good 10 minutes trying to figure it out. Then after, had to switch back places with the original employee. This situation should be reviewed with all cash people and a procedure that they all know. I felt sorry for the lady, because even after all this, she gave a $20 traveller cheque for $16 worth of groceries and received no change. WTF is that about? Aren't those the same as cash. If its good enough to buy groceries, then it should be treated as cash. Very, very poor service at this Save-On. I've had a More Rewards card since they came out, but Loblaws City Market is looking pretty good right now. read more

Its located in a very convenient location. If you know you have something to buy than park downstairs and they will reimburse you for parking. I find the prices here are a bit more expensive but it is the convenient that they are charging you. I do shop here once in awhile. Not often. Their stock are very well maintained and I like this. I ordered groceries online. The signage in the underground is dismal. I made the call upstairs right away to get my order brought down. The parking lot gives you 15 minutes to get out without charging you. I waited 10 minutes after calling when I first arrived to gave my stall #. Apparently they went to a different door. I drove further down to the next door and it was empty. There's no cell service so you can't call at both doors. All in all a frustrating experience. I left without my groceries and ended up paying $3.50 to get out of the parking lot. I do not recommend! read more

Never knew in the beginning that they reimburse for parking till I saw someone do it after I checked out, they never ask if you have parked, so they told me to go line up in customer service to get 2 bucks back, had to explain in great detail in order to get it. The other day I asked to get back as few coins as possible as I was leaving the country, but it was too difficult for him to understand and he only took the change amount, and gave me back two toonies, when I asked him to give me a fiver for two toonies and a loonie, said yeah but checked out the guy after me first and kept gesturing with his hand to me for more money, then finally said you can give me another five for a ten, which is not what i wanted to begin with. read more

They pay for 1 hour of parking - they will give you $2 credit on your bill if you present a parking ticket. I think this is a great value and good business decision because I can usually fit in one or two other close-by stores and then I shop at Save On, which I might not normally do. This place is decent. I come here to get my eggs in bulk I buy the pack of 30 for $7.00. And I buy the big brown bag of oatmeal for $17.00. That last me half a year. The only downside is the underground parking is pay parking. Although if you buy over $10.00 of merchandise they give a $2.00 discount to cover the cost of the 1 hour parking. read more

What a racket. At what point did Save On become more expensive than Safeway? Yes, there's that whole Save On card thing, but who the hell ever carries it in their wallet? Oh, right -- the keychain. Nice idea in theory, but really it's basically just a smaller item for me to lose or not carry on my person. Yes, my person. Also, for some reason there is always a massive lineup (could it have something to do with the extra-slow cashiers?) and zero options for us fast checker-outers to self satisfy our speedy needs.[1] And for what? Bulk candy, perhaps?[2] If I wanted to pay that much for my produce I'd go across the street to Whole Foods. Yeah, I said it. Whole Foods has cheaper goods than Save On. Save On time? Nope. Save On Money? Nope. Save On what then, Save On Foods... Save On What. ***************************************************************************** [1] I have nothing against slow cashiers who work for small independent grocers -- they're fine. It's just when found in a massive chain where the items are already so overpriced that I tend to have a problem. [2] They really do have an out of control bulk section. I've shopped at Save-On for more than a decade, so i'm quite familiar with the products they carry. I used to go here specifically for lunch-type items for work, but I have since moved on to greener pastures (No Frills/Nesters/Independent Grocers). This particular location is very hit or miss. Sometimes you'll see them putting up those individual drinks (Nestea, Snapple, etc) for very cheap. It used to happen very often, but now it's once in a blue moon. I have a few specific items (Western Family) like Tea which I always go for, but other than that, there's not much in terms of good deals here. Pay attention to their weekly deals, and try to find items that are on special or free with points redeemed. Also, if you're going to spend $75+ here, make sure to scan your card at the front scanner thing, and you'll get a receipt print-out of a points bonus that you get if you spend above a certain dollar amount. Usually it's pretty high like $75+, but sometimes they offer $35+ or $50+. It's VERY easy to rack up points this way if you shop here consistently for your weekly groceries. They don't charge for plastic bags, which is another plus. The parking thing is kind of annoying, but what can you do? it's downtown, so that is expected. Much better price-wise than Safeway, Urban Fare or some other places. Good option if you live downtown. Overall, moderately expensive, and just decent if you have a Save-On card. read more

What I didn't like: - When I arrived, I had to ask Customer Service for a cart because I didn't have a quarter. I resented the fact that I had to spend 10 minutes waiting in line to do this. What a hassle. - The quality of the fruits and vegetables was incredibly disappointing. Wow. LIke I'm talking beyond bad. The staff in this department work like robots -- aloof, disengaged and unhelpful. - Parking: Yowza! I was dinged $6 because I shopped for 70 min instead of 60....I was credited $2 by Save On Foods, but the extra $4??? Screw you Save On and the parking company that manages this lot. It's a crime! I spent $150 on groceries!! I shouldn't have to pay $4 to park. Even City Gate has 1.5 hours - 2 hr parking. This lot used to have a human being for a parking attendant, now it's all automated. You pay by machine at the bottom of the escalator before you leave. I didn't realize they changed it (it's been a looong time since I last parked in this underground). What a frickin' hassle to have to drive all the way back; pay a small fortune and then go back again to leave. - Prices didn't impress me much. They aren't good enough to make me want to return to grocery shopping hell again. What I liked: - My favourite brand of crackers and cereal were both on sale - almost half price compared to elsewhere. But in order to get the discount, I had to fill out paperwork with the cashier....brutal. Apparently I cant get the discount if I don't have my card or keytag with me. As if I'd carry either one around with me. - The Customer Service guy actually gave me a quarter for the cart (but in my view, the carts should be freely available) In sum, not worth it, I will NEVER shop here again. read more

It's ok. Just ok. I go because it is walking distance. With all of the competition out there they need to do better. The long lines are clogged every day, even with the self serve stations now installed. They must have had a theft problem because I feel like I'm being critiqued by security when I enter the store as if I'm a potential thief. The prices are okay but only if you remember your rewards card. It wasn't until recently that I realized the clerk can offer you their store card so you get the discounts, but just not the points. That is the first clerk in 10+ years shopping here that has every offered to do that for me if I forget my rewards card. Usually I'm out of luck and pay full price. Do better. I'm definitely a fan of their salad bar. The fact that they have my favourite tofu just brings them closer to the top. I'm not too much of a fan of Save On Foods in general, but it is super close by to my work. The selection of produce and other foods is great! If my lunch break was two hours long, I might just spend all that time at Save On Foods exploring the items they carry. One bad thing though - service is extremely slow! Cashiers are nice, but it seems like they don't care that there are 6-8 people lining up behind the customer they are helping. And mind you, this is how the express lanes are!
