I've never been to a Safeway and was surprised at the variety of a small small store. As I was only picking up a few snacks our hotel room, I didn't get to buy a lot. However, they had a very nice selection of cheese and pastries. The fruit selection was also decent. The pharmacist was friendly and helped me look for something. On Saturday Dec 27, 2025 I was at the Davie St store Vancouver. I was in the dairy section when I felt light headed. There was a stool so I sat down. The next thing I remember was waking up and I was laying on the floor. I was surrounded by staff who got me a chair, water and paper towel. A another staff member when around the store and picked up my remaining items. Another staff member escorted me to the cash. She cashed me out, packed my items and stayed with me until I got to the door. I want to thank all the staff who helped me that day and made me feel safe, I am a senior citizen and sometimes I need help. The assistant store manger, Natasha was the one who helped and organized the staff members. The bags of oranges in the produce area were damaged; the juice leaked from the bag onto my hand. There were a few mosquitoes flying around the oranges as well. it was gross. The price for the oranges was incorrect so we needed assistance but there was no staff available at the self check-out area. We waited for some time and then a female employee suddenly appeared behind us. We told her the price was $6.99 (it was $7.29 in the computer). She removed the item on the screen then she departed with our bag of oranges without saying anything. She should have told us that she would find help. Instead, she just went to the cashier lane and helped another customer. So we were confused. Then, she said someone would help us when we looked at her. We waited for awhile, then a male employee went to her and took the bag of oranges from her and went away. She eventually returned to us with the bag of oranges and said it was $6.99 (which was what I said). Usually, if the price is the same as what the customer said after they had checked the price, the employee would just fix the price in the computer without informing the price to customer again. They would only inform the price to customers if the price is different, per industry practice. That means the employee ignored the price that I told her at the beginning. Moreover, while we were waiting for them to check the price of the oranges, there were a couple of male staff standing across from us in a distance laughing at us which made us comfortable. read more

This is the first time I'm reviewing a grocery store but our experience here has been great and worth sharing with fellow Yelpers. To be honest we don't go to Safeway for the produce because as everyone knows it is expensive. But the selection itself is good and you can pretty much get everything from here if you're looking for convenience over price. A huge plus point for this location is the free underground parking so you don't have to worry about this one. The layout is pretty standard and what stood out for us was the bakery section which had a nice array of desserts. Enough to satisfy our sweet tooth. Our favorites are the chocolate cakes and kitkat cupcake. The lady at the counter was very friendly as well as the people at the cashier. The HIGHEST food prices in Vancouver are at Safeway. Went in this morning, and literally no staff. So, on top of the gouging, this American company expects the customer to do the cashier's job at the self-checkout too. Everything in Safeway is overpriced which is a clear indication that they don't care about the concept of community. What can I say, Safeway is what it is. And that's pretty much all I would expect from a huge, chain grocery store. They stock pretty much all the standards for a typical grocery store but drop the ball with their lack of "specialty" items, especially when it comes to Asian foods. But at the same time, there are more then a few shops only a couple of blocks away where you can pick up those type of things. The produce isn't the greatest and can be on the pricey side, usually due to the fact they truck in a lot of off season veggies from places like Mexico. However, once again, that's easily remedied by walking down the block to one of the corner markets. Deli wise, you get what you pay for. If you want really great olives, cheeses or meats, head to the Cardero Bottega or Capers. If you're not willing to spend a little extra then the Safeway deli is okay for your day to day cured ham needs. My biggest issue with the store has to be the lack-luster seafood section. For a city that can boast some of the best fresh, local seafood the selection at Safeway is incredibly sparse and well, just plain sad. It's Spot Prawn season, but not one to be found in their cooler. No live mussels, scallops, or crab and they still carry farmed-fish that I don't want anything to do with. Why can I not find a decent fishmonger in the West End? Cons aside, they're open early and close late. The store is clean, well stocked, and the staff for the most part is pleasant and actually willing to help you find what you're looking for. It's also nice that they are now carrying more organic options including their own Safeway Organics product line. Alex D. is right about the "one crazy server" that works there. I'm still trying to figure out if he is actually on the "I'll have what he's having" uppers or once again he just forgot to take his prescribed medication. The other day when I was in there he didn't have any customers at his till and he was actually shadow boxing with invisible opponent. Don't take your empties here. They only give you back half the refund on your deposit. I returned a 2L Coke bottle and only got $0.10 back, instead of $0.20. I mentioned "I only get $0.10 back?" and she walked away ignoring me. What a rip-off! I could only just imagine if I had brought the 24 bottle limit. I would have only gotten $2.40 instead of $4.80. I really hate when people short change you on the deposit, on top of the $0.05 recycle fee the already tack onto your invoice, when you purchase the item. read more

With the limited grocery options in the West End Safeway in general fails to add much to the pot. While they stock a wider range than No Frills they gouge you on the prices ridiculously. Their "Safeway Card" is just another example of how they push up the price, and then offer a discount with a card to make you feel like you are getting a good deal. On a slightly positive and humorous note there is this one crazy server who is seriously on some "I'll have what he's having" uppers. It is like he is racing to beat some unrecorded world record for completing a transaction. Once he even told me to swipe my card and as I drew it from my wallet he declares "haha too slow". Oh no I think I am in the challenge as well now!!! He also takes great pleasure in reading customers names when they use a card to pay. Safeway is not my first choice for grocery stores but sometimes it's just convenience. This one holds a special place in my heart as I lived around the corner for my first 13 years in Vancouver. The staff all new my two little kids and it actually felt like a neighbourhood store. Now when I go to my dentist on this block I'll sometimes pop in. There are staff who still remember me and ask how the kids are even though we haven't lived in the West End for over 6 years! read more

I had my first West End 10% off Tuesday shopping experience this week, how exciting! As newbies to the West End, we parked the car on the street, only to discover that we had to make two trips to carry our groceries out because you can't take the shopping cart outside. Did they think we were hobos? Maybe. Did they think we would take off with the cart, never to be seen again? Yes. I found this Safeway to be a little weird. There were lots of strange isles, and confusion when we were trying to find things. They also seemed to be out of stock on a few normal items that you would think would be stocked in abundance because they are non-perishable. They did however, have the most amazing PMS isle. Yea, I said it PMS isle. This isle was filled with maxipads and tampons on one side and ice cream on the other. The only thing missing was some machine guns. The service was standard as was expected, the cashier didn't speak english too well, and when we were looking for help to carry out our stuff since we accidently parked on the street rather than underground where we could just roll the cart out to the car, we couldn't find anyone. Alright, with the No Frills in this neighbourhood it is surprising this Safeway has any business at all. But they do. Lots of it. Well at least today, the Sunday before Christmas. This location has everything. Deli, sandwiches, Starbucks, seating, self check out. My only complaint would be that not all the forks, spoons for their deli items are not kept in the same place. THEY SHOULD ALL BE IN THE SAME PLACE!! Check the expiration dates on products at this Safeway! I have bought products to managements attention with expired expiration dates only to find it still offered for sale the following day and this has happened more than once. The health and safety of their customers seems to come second to sales and profit. The managers I have interacted with in the last 6 months are Julius, Chao and Rapinder. The prices are great, it's in a nice location, and it's not too crowded. The store has a good layout and is easy to navigate.

I used to be a fan of Safeway in the US. For instance in Arizona, it was one of the ffew stores which you could find great quality product for really cheap prices. After seeing Safeway in Vancovuer, I thought "thanks god, there is a cheap place to shop". Come on! this place is as expensive as wholefoods, with not as high quality food. As a comparison, in Arizona, if something was $15 in Wholefoods, it would be $5-6 top, at the Safeway. Do not get me wrong, it was not only cheap, but the quality was at least as good as the quality in Vancouver. I know that Vancouver is more expensive than Arizona, but they are selling double, sometimes the triple price of canadian superstore, t&t and other similar places. This Safeway is cheaper than other locations, they seem to cater more to the West End residents. Produce is expensive compared to small markets around. They're pretty good at managing lineups (unlike Davie Independent), and get you through the line fast. The inside is clean, updated, well stocked. The hours are great (open late), and bonus Starbucks (unfortunately lacking charm, slow, and average quality) but it still helps. If I need to do a large grocery shop, I come here because it's reliable and quick. read more

I needed light lunch, but not typical fast food. I wanted to try Deli counter in Safeway. I looked at prepared paninis which looked much larger than anywhere else. I selected one scoop of scalloped potatoes from hot section and one square of deep fried fish. Total cost $2.75. I added one more scoop of scalloped potatoes. Final total of $3.25. There are decent tables to eat with nice view to Davie street. Food was tasting fresh, it was perfectly warm, potatoes were hot and with perfect taste. I am going for seconds today and next time for sure! Where else you could get nice fresh lunch for three dollars with a lots of smiles of handsome sales person who was open for friendly conversation. read more

This Safeway starts to show its age. It's fine for quick shopping, but I prefer the one of Robson street. Unfortunately those are the only two Safeways in Downtown. Driving in and out of the garage (free for customers) is not that easy from Davie Street. read more
