This review is for the deli. Most of the time we have a really hard time ordering sandwiches at the deli b/c there is a strong language barrier with the service people. It's very frustrating. Sometimes they become angry and are very rude when they don't understand. Which is why I only gave four stars instead of five. Today we came in to get some sandwiches and we had the best service person. Hasil S did such a great job. She was friendly and took her time to make our sandwiches nice for us. We could tell that she really took pride in her work and really cared. It was a nice change. Thanks Hasil! Safeway. I really think that if you continue to bring on more competent people like Hasil, your rating and customer satisfaction will continue to go up. Not to say that all of the staff is bad. We love this store. We only run into problems with the people in the deli. read more

This is my primary grocery store even though (at the time of this writing) I live in Wallingford and the closest grocery store to me is Wallingford QFC. I am better able to stretch my food buying dollar here than at any other grocery store in the immediate area. While University Village QFC would be the ideal store for me if I had more money, this Safeway still offers a much wider variety of products than the Brooklyn Safeway, at better prices than area QFCs. I think this Safeway even has lower prices and more items on sale than Brooklyn Safeway, but I'm not completely sure. Until very recently, I used to do most of my grocery shopping at Brooklyn Safeway and Wallingford QFC, but I started noticing that Brooklyn Safeway was a little too close to the UW campus to cater to anyone but college students and their notoriously awful diets, and QFC was too deep into Wallingford to have prices regular people like me can afford. I wondered if Roosevelt Safeway might be a better option and what do you know? I'm eating a healthier diet for less money than since I left my parents' house 16 years ago. The staff at this Safeway is nice enough but each seems a little off in some way. The manager likes to get on the P.A. and make long speeches about things on sale or certain doors being closed for the night. Monologues that he thinks are comical but that I think are tedious. There's a short round blond guy who wheels carts around the store and glances at me nervously and looks away repeatedly. Lately, a bag boy who might be mentally slow (he always, in a most perfunctory way, wishes me a great day even when I'm in the middle of shopping) carelessly threw my friend's doughnut between two rows of cans such that it would get crushed if the bag it was all in had been lifted up. I think it's wonderful n' progressive n' all that they try to employ everyone (progressivism? that's why I live in Seattle, WA instead of Sisterf#ck, AR), but please teach them how to bag groceries. Ultimately, this Safeway being entirely staffed by the Addams Family notwithstanding, this is one of the better grocery stores in the area. It is rare that I can say an establishment has increased my quality of life. I will continue using Brooklyn Safeway and Wallingford QFC for when I only need one or two things or when I am very short on time, but I will make that 35 block trek to Roosevelt Safeway for my major grocery shopping trips. read more

This Safeway was a great find the day I was walking my Yorker all over Seattle. I ran out of treats so Roscoe and I went in and found bacon flavored Mini Milk Bone dog biscuits. He never had tried them before - he loves them! That Safeway is the only place we've found them anywhere. Kudos! read more

Each time I've gone here, I've found their staff to be really friendly and helpful. It's not the biggest Safeway and their selection is not all that great but it'll do. Parking can be an issue during the after work rush and their spaces are pretty tiny but I was told by my coworker that there is extra parking below the building, look for the red parking sign. My only complaint is about the customers who shop here. Just the other day, some lady with her gigantic SUV cut me off when I was about to park and then inside the store, some lovely individual decided to use the store floor as a waste bin and spat out their gum on the floor. I spent a good chunk of my shopping time with a wad of nastiness stuck to the bottom of my shoe. This all happened during the after dinner rush so I'll remember next time to go late, other than that, this location is just peachy. read more

This store is perhaps the worst grocery store I have been to. Now, don't get me wrong I haven't seen any vermin or anything along those lines but somehow they are always out of staple items and the things I need. Last time I was there they were out of cocoa powder. It ends up being a frustrating and time consuming experience as then I have to go to another grocery store. I have given many tries and the last time was my last time. I have never been a fan of their fish or meat counters either. Oddly enough it is not all Safeway's but this specific one. read more

Not quite as evil as it's other supermarket competitors off Roosevelt... this little Safeway has decent selection, price and friendly staff. It is BUSY. The bad side of this as mentioned: lines to check out and they seem to run out of common items from time to time. One day no 1% milk in any size container. Another day, no instant mash potatoes or chicken stock. None. The good part of being fast paced is the stock is fresh. Produce, bakery, meat always look fresh and restocked. Extra star for a good sized parking lot AND a covered garage - huge plus in the rainy months. read more

This was my grocery store for three months, while I was living in the area. I'm a Canadian (Torontonian), so the Safeway chain as a whole was unfamiliar for me. I was very impressed. Maybe grocery stores in Canada/Toronto are just shabbier, or something, but this store felt somewhat "upscale" to me, despite the fact that it's not supposed to be. I wasn't expecting my change from the transaction to slide down the little slide; I've never experienced that before. The cashiers/staff were always very friendly and efficient. I once had two employees volunteer to help me look for "garbanzo beans" when I couldn't find them, and they patiently helped me look until they solved the mystery: Chickpeas are the same thing as garbanzo beans. I got addicted to their instant oatmeal (which is way better than Quaker!), bread, and eggs. I also appreciated the fact that their website makes it easy to see what they carry and their current deals, so you can plan your shopping list. They don't have some "snobbier" ingredients, but they have the basics and even a bit beyond that. I had to go to Whole Foods for puréed pumpkin, and Trader Joe's for some good chocolate, but otherwise they had everything I typically use (unlike Toronto's ironically-named "Food Basics" which somehow ends up not having some basics in stock quite often). So they're a solid store that I'd be happy to have permanently as my local grocery store. read more

Ever since the QFC on Roosevelt closed last year to make way for construction on the light rail, this has been the store to take its place for me. A Whole Foods resides less than a block from my house, but their prices make it only an occasional grocery visit. For stocking up, the Safeway on Roosevelt (if I am in the neighborhood, I will go to the one in the U-District, but it is a smaller store with a few departments missing & cleanliness is often lacking) has been worth the 5-6 blocks' walk for refilling my cupboards & fridge. I can do a month's shopping for under $100 & sometimes even less than $75. The phrase "store brand" might strike fear into many customers, but Safeway's various in-house brands are better than expected & without the stigma that comes with the word "generic". Checkers are always friendly & without fail, after I am all rung up & paid, they say, "Thank you, Mr. Andrews", which, at 32, is a bit young to be called. But it shows even if a rush comes on & they are eager to get everyone out & packed up, they never get overwhelmed by the need to quicken their pace & let their equal need to be courteous fall away. I generally go in the middle of the day, so I have not witnessed any untoward activity on my way in or out. Maybe things happen at other times, but the supposed local nickname of Un-Safeway looks to be misguided. While the distance to & from on foot might preclude any especially huge purchases, when you have a budget to stick to & still want to get what you pay for (and sometimes more), the Roosevelt Safeway does a fine job of replacing the still-dearly departed QFC that I considered MY store for my first year in Seattle. A new "my store" just happens to be a few more blocks up & worth the elbow grease & shoe leather to get there & back. read more

The worst store ever!!! I f...ing hate it. I only go there because it's convenient. We shop for pretty much the same items every week. The last couple of years the quality has gone downhill drastically! The produce selection sucks and half rotten, half the time no asparagus, and poor quality of other fruits and vegetables. Just moved here from Las Vegas. Went to buy some essentials for our new apartment. The prices were high but we were ok considering our location. What wasn't OK was the attitude of the express checkout girl who basically reprimanded me for going to her lane. I didn't see 'express' and she was 'so busy' talking to the bag boy her snarky attitude and authoritative pointing to another lane was not worth the overpriced groceries. I almost shoved the cart in her lane and left however choices are limited at this hour so I had no choice. If you're that unhappy about life you should reconsider your employment options. I'll give it one more try but honestly. The guy at the checkout I went to was making excuses for her which clearly indicates a behavioral problem that needs to be addressed. I lived in this neighborhood for many years and shopped here frequently. I watched the store literally morph into different versions of itself. I made a lot of observations. Here are more than a few: When these guys run specials they are literally goading you to fill your baskets and buy more with their buy 3 get 1 free sales and the like. I was trying to buy less and here I was being prodded into buying more. Get 1 free bag of chips if you buy 3 bags. In the meat department this worked so well on me for stocking my freezer that I 'd have food that was freezer burned because I bought so much and forgot about it only later to have to throw it away. That's not their fault but their marketing prowess to get me to buy more. Then for some reason they stopped carrying cases of the soda I'd buy and only carried 12 packs so I'd have to buy more in order to spend the same amount. When I decided to buy less I paid a premium because the lesser amount was more costly. Now this next observation somewhat stymied me regarding it's intent. Most if not all stores, grocery stores included, have a separator aisle. Meaning when you walk down an aisle you come to another aisle that goes left and right leading you to the other aisles that are to the left and right. Whether it was to add more merchandise by creating more space or forcing you to stay in an aisle so that you'd potentially fill your cart with more stuff, they took away the separator aisle and created aisles that spanned the depth of the store from front to back. I've never seen this anywhere else. I found this annoying because not only were the aisles longer but they also seemed narrower. The hunt for the one thing you came to the store to buy that you actually needed became more difficult because you became committed into searching an aisle for that elusive item and had to look at even more stuff to find it and might buy more stuff because you found this other stuff and guess what you forget what you came there for, buy something else, leave, go home only to remember you didn't buy what you needed. The parking lot is huge at specific times of the day and there's more than ample parking. However, should you dare to shop say between 3 PM and 6 PM you'll have to jockey for the few available spaces and witness the soulless, guiltless, me first ones justify by force why the next space is theirs and not yours. To avoid this I'd try to shop during the wee hours of the late late night but this was not to be so always giving me ample opportunities to witness the mayhem of mannerless people afoot, on the loose. Overall, the staff was friendly to a point with plenty of quirks like why is this cashier commenting on what I'm buying? It's so my choice to buy chocolate, cake, cookies, ice cream and soda. Why is this any of her business? If the express line is for a few items then why does the line move so slow? When the cashier greets me, asks me how I'm doing and in turn I respond in kind, why do I have to listen to his whining and complaining? Does he not know I'm just being polite and I really don't care? LOL. When going through the check line and two cashiers are having a casual conversation with each other while checking customers out do they not know that we the customers can hear them? I watched while many a time a customer going through the express line had more than the required amount of items. There was no fuss but total accommodation except when I did it with one or two extra items while shopping with my mother. The cashier went bonkers, was beside herself with confusion saying "you have too many items" "you'll have to get into one of the other lines" It was totally embarassing and humiliating if not frustrating to be treated like that especially after having been a customer there for many years. I would buy lottery tickets there. When they got a dispensing maching I was happy as I didn't have to deal with the people at the desk anymore. Need I say more? Well, actually on one occasion I had to because the machine ate my dollar. So I had to get help from the lady behind the desk who was no lady. She was not polite. She acted as if I had totally messed up her whole day. Then she scolded me for not inserting my dollar correctly or using a brand new crisp bill that the machine could see. Bad bad. Meh. Here's what I want. I want to be able to go in, find what I need, at a good price, get checked out and gone in a short time with no fuss or hassle. I guess that's too much to expect lol. This review is for Myrna in the floral department. Myrna helped my friend and I with the flowers for my wedding. She taught us quickly how to make one bouquet and one boutineer, then sent us on our way with the rest of the flowers and a supply list to make the rest. I had 5 bouquets (that were later put in vases on the tables) and 10 boutineers plus some extra flowers for the rest of the vases for $70! If you're having a small-ish wedding, I recommend going to this safeway for your flowers. read more

Ok, there are Safeways everywhere and I am a complete freak when it comes to supermarkets. I dont know why, I just love them! When I moved to Greenlake two yrs ago, my Albertson's was closed two weeks later (not a real loss) however, I started going to this Safeway. I dont get it!! Its alway busy, which is cool FOR THEM. The staff are friendly enough, but they never have enough registers open. Even at 6pm on a weeknight or midday on a weekend...when everyone in our neighborhood is there, two lines...thats it! Come on people get a f____g! clue...when you have 22 people deep ( no joke, I counted one night!) open another line!! I love the location and can walk there. But I would rather drive over to QFC. I only go to this Safeway when I need too!! read more

Good for the bare basics (bread and water) but unfortunately, there is not a lot of variety in foods available. Their vegetarian frozen food options are almost non-existent and I often leave having to skip a few things on my list as they're impossible to find. I usually LOVE this Safeway and having be going there for years. There employees are always so nice, cheery and helpful! However today, I was checked out by 'Arthur', and he makes me not want to ever go back. He was rude right off the bat, made fun of two of his co-workers behind their back...and then made fun of the bags I had brought in to use. He was completely unprofessional and if I see him there again, I will not be in his line. I hope his supervisor sees this and makes sure he treats his customers AND co-workers with a little more professionalism...Really immature behavior, especially for how old he was. read more

I agree with the others. This safe way rocks. They have big underground parking like the other guy say and it's always clean (except those random teen skateborders on rainy day. What are they thinking?) Elevator is old and need to be oiled, but at least it doesn't smell that bad. They have all kinds of stuff and pharmacy for old people. Clerks are skilled and friendly. They always respond to customers with good manners, like when I was trying to find something small and rare... There's one thing I am sad about safeway though. They don't have TEEN VOGUE anymore. As far as Safeways go, this one isn't the worst but it's also far from the best I've been to. The store is small, and the aisles feel cramped. To be fair, so far I've always been able to find everything on my list, but I'm not exactly an exotic shopper. I made the mistake of using the restroom here the other day and it was literally covered in shit - YUCK. At least they have plenty of free parking here, it's conveniently located right off Roosevelt, and the employees seem like a friendly bunch. I've only gone during the weekday so far and have never had problems with long lines or crowded parking lots, though I can't imagine it would be much fun trying to navigate the narrow aisles here when it's busy. read more

If you call Bartell's, they transfer you through to the pharmacy and it rings and rings and rings. This is the case at two of the Bartell's in my neighborhood. Safeway has its own pharmacy line and you always get a human being on the other end. And...they are really helpful and knowledgeable. No brainer. read more

I shop here only out of convenience: the pharmacy rocks, and I live less than 1/3 of a mile away. And my doc is right across the street, so again, the pharmacy is convenient. My biggest gripe with this location is they are too small and are either out of items, or have completely discontinued what I usually purchase. Or they never stock enough to take advantage of the "buy 3 get one free" sales; as soon as someone else takes advantage, you're screwed. I also expect a store to be fully stocked over-night, yet have often walked in and been unable to shop due to the sheer number of pallets blocking aisles and/or access to shelves. And this on a Saturday at 8am. And I am really tired of staff members assaulting me with, "can I help you find something?" Honestly, there is a fine line between decent customer service and being pushy. They tend towards the latter here, and I find myself avoiding staff as a result. New management hasn't helped and I wish they would just level it and start over. Whole Foods is more expensive, but offers better quality, service, and product knowledge. And I can't wait for the new PCC to open in Greenlake; hopefully, it will be a decent alternative. read more

First let me say Safeway is my go-to store. Has been for years. This has nothing to do with all Safeways and everything to do with this Safeway. The unfortunate thing is that this is the store closest to my work. So i am constantly being sent to get bagels for meetings or popsicles for kids. And I am continually being disappointed. I have even called corporate because I cannot believe how bad it truly is. Oh boy... Where to start... Once was in the back of the store enjoying a sample when a female employee came barraling along with a meat rack. She loudly announced that it was her break and that this elderly man well he was taking way too long to get out of her way. And then as she passes him she bumbs him and (I kid you not) he goes flying into a bread display. I had to be a witness as he needed medical attention! Another time i went in and bought over 50 mini cup cakes for a staff birthday party. I go baxk to work and open the packages and three of them have mold. So at this party we now have no dessert. I bring them back to the store with receipt and mold and they first deny that they sell these particular cup cakes and then refuse me a refund. You better believe I walked out of there with my money! Another time i was at the deli and noticed that the lady wasn't wearing gloves to serve. When I asked she said they had run out of gloves...ummmm...gross. And finally. Today. I go there. By choice today. I should have known. I hand the cashier a fifty. And he gives me change for a twenty. It took a manager and 30 minutes for me to get my money. And then I get home to find that he didn't put everything I bought in the bag. That's it. I'm out. Hello qfc! So nice to meet you! read more

I'm updating this because the assistant manager at Safeway took time out of his day to check in about what occurred. He was very apologetic and said that he had spoken to staff about being respectful of dietary restrictions. Kudos to him! I would give a 5 stars to him for his work, which is why I updated the rating. I should probably try out the deli again, but I'm kind of "once burned, twice shy" about it. No appetite now, ya know? That said, the fact that he took the time to address my concern though shows professionalism and care for the customer and I appreciate it. I live a block away this store so I frequently go here if I need something quickly. I don't particularly like Safeway stores because they tend to be more pricey than other stores so I try not to buy too much here. I do frequent the clearance which sometimes has some pretty good stuff but I have had issues with the clearance items ringing up. Four times now, I have gotten things off the clearance shelf and as I'm walking out the door, I realize that at least one of the items did not ring up at the correct price. It's never been an issue getting my money back, but I do wish that the cashier's would be more observant about clearance items so I don't have to take the extra time to walk back in and get my $.75 back. I've also noticed a lot of the cashiers tend to talk to one another, even when I am setting my stuff on the belt and they just keep their conversations going with each other and don't even acknowledge that I'm there. This is my Lake City / North Roosevelt go to grocery store to snag appetizers and wine. This particular store carries a wide variety of cheese, bread and crackers. They also have the occasional special on fruit trays. Fried chicken? You bet! This is a good spot for snagging last minute munchies for the Bowl games post Christmas Day or NFL post season in January. The wine selection is decent albeit this store is a tad bit smaller than the Safeway on 15th by Group Health or their U Village store. They stock the lower price point wines like Columbia Crest. They have mid-price range labels like Veuve Clicquot. They also have a locked cabinet where they have their "pricey" bottles like Dom Perignon or La Grande Dame Brut. The beauty of their wine purchasing is their buy six & save. They even have a pretty stout cardboard carrier that will hold 6 bottles. Now for those of us that are Safeway Club Card holders, buying 6 will get you an additional 10% discount. What I love is that you can mix and match and still get a 10% off. Say you get one $6.99 bottle, 4 at various prices and the 2006 Louis Roderer Crystal Brut ($220.00), well you do the math on the discount in the Crystal. So for those of us that occasionally splurge on "the good stuff," shopping for football libations just got s smidgen less expensive. read more
