This particular Safeway is some kind of headquarters. Come in early and you'll see a bunch of people in suits gathered around this or that display. When they reorganize the shelves, or get new cashier electronics, they test it out here first. So you can be a cutting edge grocery shopper. Everyone that works here is nice and friendly, as is to be expected at any Safeway (they're trained to be friendly). Plenty of good produce. Everything seems to be well stocked, as a rule. Decent Safeway, i love their gift card selection here, saved me a drive into Hacienda Crossings to get a Best Buy gift card along with iTunes. Unfortunately they didn't have the BBQ sauce I wanted, so I have to go to the other one down the street for that! half hams i have bought generally have little taste. most recently, there is no taste. for years i have bought the thick cut safeway bacon. baking it gives good taste and little shrinkage. most recent one was not thick. pieces looks smudged together. baking it resulted in shrinkage and curling. taste was not good! some time back i looked forward to ham hocks for soup. these were very dark. they were only fat not the delicious meat pieces i had enjoyed. the broth smell was unpleasant. it was discarded. stocking remains too high for safe reaching- particularly when i need bamboo shoots and water chestnuts. read more

Eh, it's ok. When I used to live off of Owens, I used to just drive to the 24 hour one over in Dublin even though this one was a tad closer. This one seems sort of dark. I can say that when you want to super shop (not advised because it's so expensive) that you'll get in and out faster at 2 AM at this one compared to the one in Dublin. read more

Simple goods, wish they were more health orientated, but they have all the staples. At times I love the self check out, but at other times (particularly when I have lots of produce) it is a hassle to type in codes and search for the images in the computer screen. The alternative is of course old fashion check out, but the wait is usually at least 3-5 customers deep. Convenience is the most important aspect to me when it comes to this grocery store. Would love to have time to go to a farmer's market or something more health orientated, but those are not conveneint to my time or schedule. read more

I have asked various checkers whether kids call in sick or what the deal is, and several have told me that the managers are too cheap to schedule enough staff. Shopping at the store on 11/12/16 at 8am and had an offensive encounter with a checkout person. Her name is Susan and she is quite possibly the most horrible person I have had the misfortune of dealing with. Rude and inconsiderate doesn't begin to describe her attitude and demeanor. If you're a regular at Safeway, you're probably familiar with Bill. Bill was working at her check stand that morning bagging groceries and she was insulting and rude to him also. The way she treated me was not acceptable but the way she interacted with Bill was simply disgusting. I came here on Friday after having lunch nearby. The cashiers need to mind their own business when it comes to products he/she buys in their store. I happened to purchase a bag of Masa so I could make tamales and yes, I have made them before however the cashier didn't know that. Lady: "Wow - you're buying Masa." Me: "Uh huh." Lady: "Do you even know how to make Tamales?" Me: "Yes, I do!!" [very proudly] Lady:: "Wow .. that's great!!" Also,there was a white lady, another customer already ahead of me, early 50's decided to huff and puff towards me because I wasn't the same race as hers.She was trying to segregate me from allowing me to put my groceries right after hers on the conveyor belt. Of course, I experienced racism/discrimination in grade school (different City), but I never expected to experience racism/discrimination at a grocery store like Safeway in Pleasanton, CA though. The white lady didn't want my groceries touching hers saying non Caucasians were "dirty," HEY - whatever that means lady. lol Maybe, YOU should pack your bags and move back to Mississippi. My groceries kept touching hers because the cashier was pressing a button to get her groceries closer to scan the items. The white lady feeling disgusted, dramatically pushed my groceries back, twice as she gave me a dirty look. I never felt so angry. We live in 2017 AND in the Bay Area for crying out loud. I have the right to shop as she has the right, but she discriminated me because I wasn't Caucasian like her. The cashier was Hispanic and the guy placing her groceries into the bags was Caucasian and he was nice to me when it was my turn to pay and such so I just assumed it was just this lady's bad day or something. Next time, she pulls something like this with another Asian or another race, I hope the other person tells her off. I don't like altercations because you never know how crazy the other person is and never know if the lady would have pulled a gun at me or my child who was with me. And, these crazies don't get enough punishment because the lady could simply say she was mentally retarded and get off with a slap on her wrist. She also told me she was a Donald Trump supporter and one day, only Caucasians will be left in Pleasanton, CA while people like me (colored people) will be deported back to our Countries, but I was born legally here in the States. The lady was just crazy + having a bad day sounds like. lol Overall, this Safeway like others had fresh fruits and vegetables stocked well. But, with the altercation with this other customer who sounds like she shops here frequently, knowing another cashier who was Caucasian) I won't shop here. I have had better service at the other Safeway locations especially in Dublin - on Dublin Blvd. Never had an altercations with another customers either relating to racism anyways. This was my first time at the Safeway on Santa Rita/Valley store. Also, if the bagger help you out to your car, please don't forget to tip them. Especially in the hot summer months. Normal and most commonly selling groceries are not available. Asian section is the worst. Common flat rice noodles and sauce are missing. Always there is no one to service or help in most places. This review is entirely for Aracely ( I hope I spelt her name right) of the deli department. Rarely will I go out of my way to leave a review on anything anywhere, but I am used to receiving mediocre at best customer service in any portion of Safeway but ESPECIALLY in the deli department where the hot case is. The employees always seem pissed off and put off to be helping me and getting the stuff I need together. Like I came in to personally pester and put to work that individual employee that was stuck with helping me for the day all because I had nothing better to do than come buy things from their hot case. Trust me if I could grab the food myself I would happily do so, but the food is rightfully housed behind a case. Now today for the first time I was helped by Aracely. She was kind and personable to me the entire time of service. As if she was an actual normal human being with conversation skills that was happy to have her job. I needed four different things and it didn't bother her at all. Usually i'd get a disgruntled sigh or something along those lines by the second time the worker behind the case would have to ask me "anything else"? Take a note from your employee Aracely to set the example for the others Safeway. Wow. Okay, so I'll start off by saying they're fine as a grocery store. I shop at other safeway locations and they're about what you'd expect as that goes. That being said, I used the men's room this morning and was shocked. It was beyond disgusting, and I've used trench latrines in Afghanistan. I believe I was cheated at the Jamba Juice at Safeway. I ordered a 16 oz. juice ($3.90) with a $5 gift card. As I was waiting for my drink, they said it hadn't gone through. So I swiped it again, and this time it did go through, but apparently there was only $1.10 left on the card and $2.80 left for me to pay. I had no money left, though. I know I had $5 on that card, and the fact that there was only $1.10 left on it the second time I swiped it shows that I had been billed twice. I told them that I had $5 on the card and that I had just swiped it before, but they said I still had to pay $2.80 and that I should call the Jamba Juice company. Luckily, a very kind lady offered to pay for the rest of my drink. I am very grateful to her! I'm not sure if it's the machine's or the person's fault. Just when you think the quality of service and product can't go any lower... it does. Safeway is an excellent example of what NOT to do as a retailer. It is difficult to comprehend that with their corporate HQ located in the same city it could be this bad. The store is dirty and in poor condition, meat and produce is of "cull" quality, and the store is staffed with a motley crew. Look to Gene's Fine Foods, Raley's, or Trader Joe's for better service and product. read more

When they are not getting robbed (reference to today's news), this Safeway is a great place to shop. It has everything you could need from a grocery store and always has the great Safeway prices with the club card. It has a fairly large parking lot and is ideally located on Santa Rita Road. It's also close to Starbucks, Hollywood Video, Chevron and Walgreens, so it's pretty much a one stop place to shop center. read more

Today I had the a terribly rude clerk wait on me at Safeway. I walked up to the check stand. A lady was just finishing be checked out ahead of me. I put two items on the belt and the clerk started yelling at me to stop! Don't put anything on the counter when the belt is moving! I looked at her surprised, never have I been told this. Susan was squinting her eyes at me and pushing my frozen dinners back at me! Why did she not turn the belt off if it bothered her? Don't know. Twice she yelled at me to not put my food on the belt. Hello....I was the only customer! I never said anything because this lady seemed like she could commit work place violence. Then when she starts checking me out she is just as nice as can be. I frequent this particular Safeway often for my work time food needs. Typically the service is ok..accommodating and not above the average "I hate my job" type service, but today was different. I wanted to grab some hot soup because it was cold and rainy, and there was literally no soup available. It seemed like what was left in the warming pots had burnt because no one took the time to check it. Also there seem to be two managers "inspecting" the area and completely ignored the issue making a statement "I guess we are all outta chili". Really? Let's get some action and fix the situation rather than sweep it under the rug like no one saw. Also, I went to the deli counter to get some chicken strips and wedges. I was very disappointed when there was no wedges available for me to purchase, but that's not the issue. The lady behind the counter was rude, abrupt, and just overall hating the experience. I'm sorry, if someone is showing some sort of dissatisfaction I would offer another product or at least apologize. Nope! Her response "is that it! You done?" Your kidding me. Please excuse me for taking 2 minutes out of your oh so busy schedule rolling up what ever the hell you were doing to help me. I work in the customer service industry and I know how the public can be, however I did not find my request or concerns demanding as this is a place to purchase food! Thank goodness this store has such a huge aversion to having shopping carts available for its customers (seriously, what's with the useless and empty cooler in the cart corral??), that alone helps limit your having to deal the ever increasing prices when they are already the most expensive place in town, or having to put up with cashiers that would rather talk to each other instead of greeting or paying attention to you. Ok, so I'm ok with Safeway overall, but several people have said the same things about this one. The self checkouts are not an excuse to close check stands. The employees are not exactly the best here, and it's not rocket science. the only thing that makes it ok is the "thank you Mr.____, you saved $$. I shopped here a lot when I first moved to Pleasanton, but I rarely shop here anymore. The prices are astronomical compared to Trader Joe's or Walmart. The produce is mediocre compared to Gene's or the farmers' market. The lines are really long outside of peak hours. And the employees (not all, but a significant fraction) are rude - overcharging for produce, whizzing on their bikes in front of cars, walking aggressively down the aisles. You'd think that Safeway, headquartered in Pleasanton, could do better. But nope. Save yourself some money and peace of mind - shop elsewhere. read more

I found staff here to be very rude and impolite. If you go to check out late, there will long lines. Staff works slow and fewer of them are there I went there. Also, parking lot is dark. Once I forgot two packs of water in car and came back in 2 minutes. Someone has already stolen it. Never used gift card exchange machine. It gives $15 for $25 gift card. Another Safeway store will not accept the voucher you get for gift card. Today I tried to exchange voucher which got yesterday. An employee as well as manager very rudely said no to accept it. Ordered 2 cakes for my little girls birthday.... One for today (her actual birthday) another for Saturday (party) just picked the first one up and it looks nothing like the one we ordered.... It's messy, colours completely different, to say I'm annoyed and disappointed is a understatement. Got a refund and cancelled the one for Saturday..... My little girl came with me to collect and she is now upset after seeing it. Now need to find a cake by Saturday!!! Safeway....what a complete disappointment!
