You know life has taken a turn when you start reviewing grocery stores - a turn to where you ask? I dunno - just a turn. Anyhow, turning to Safeway in Linda Mar:
This happens to be my favorite Safeway of all the ones I have been to, and currently go to.
However, this must be said first:
~This is NOT my favorite Safeway because it has long lines that snake around the store at 5 pm and sometimes as late as 7pm (but who's watching the clock? I have all night on a Friday to spend in line at the Safeway Pacifica - yay, good times).
~It is not my favorite Safeway because you are frustrated due to the fact that all you want is a decent bottle of apple cider without the fizz in it, and you get continuously pointed to apple juice (not the same thing by the way) because they are actually sold out of cider, but no one that works there realizes it, and you do, and so you say to yourself, f*__ it, I'll turn this apple juice into apple cider myself because apparently people in Pacifica LOVE their apple cider. (On the upside though, you walked all over the store looking for clerks and getting redirected to the apple juice, so your fitbit cheers you on, thinking you are exercising, not actually in a grocery store, and on the hunt for apple cider).
~It is not my favorite Safeway because after you spent three separate visits looking for said apple cider and were redirected to apple juice, you finally saw they reordered said apple cider and now the shelf is fully stocked, but you already turned the apple juice into cider yourself, and then you had to drink it with Rum, because well, life takes it turns.
Ok, enough of that. This is my favorite Safeway because:
~I was forced to learn how to make my own apple cider.
~I bought organic cloves, honey, vanilla extract, and cinnamon sticks that all went into making the apple cider that turned out delicioso, by the way.
~I bought a good bottle of Rum in the dimly lit liquor aisle to go in the apple cider. (Aforementioned liquor aisle seems staged to romance customers with its mood lighting, because oh, right, I was spending all night in the Linda Mar Safeway. So soon Safeway? Don't you think we might be rushing things a bit?).
Seriously though, here is why I am a fan of this Safeway:
~You can buy a lot, if not all, local and organic at Safeway.
~The cost of organic eggs will break the bank here, but local, organic kale and swiss chard (and other veggies not pre-packaged) are priced like a farmer's market, and the greens are amazingly fresh. The kale is tender and the most flavorful I have come across yet.
~Local coffee - they have it. Every Safeway has different selections of local coffee, this Safeway has less choices, so sometimes I opt for Kona Coffee from Hawai'i because well, I grew up in the islands and I like to dream of home.
~$5 Fridays - don't know what that is? Go check it out.
~The kale, mango, coconut salad in the deli is to die for! It has cashews in it! I haven't seen it anywhere else. Sometimes I go to Safeway just for that.
~The Rotisserie Chicken is always, always, always juicy.
~Wine is usually on sale and there are always a ton of Californias. Robert Mondavi Private Selection, Cabernet Sauvignon, is less than $8 a bottle and it has a smooth finish.
~The in-store baked breads are always fresh. I have never come across a day when the bread wasn't warm and soft like it just came out of the oven. This place got me to start eating white bread again-not healthy, but sinfully delicious. (Dip in balsamic and evoo and enjoy with a glass of that Cab - uh oh).
~The antipasto section near the deli is something I crave. I get the marinated artichokes, olive mixes and olive mixes with feta on a regular basis. They have artisan champagne jams (I love the pomegranate one) that go really well on one of those fresh Dutch rolls with Brie cheese. Again, drink with a glass of that Cab and have with a good Italian dry salami. Oh my goodness. Safeway, you are taking my breath away.
~Fresh salsa or Pico de Gallo added to already ripe avocados ($1 each on sale) and a squeeze of lemon for fresh Guacamole. Need I say more? Oh yes.
~Even my favorite chocolate chips are local. Safeway sells Guittard chocolate chips, the only brand I use for my oatmeal surprise cookies. Did you know Guittard makes their chocolate in Burlingame? I just found that out! No wonder the air is scented with fresh baked chocolate chip cookies near the BART. I never encountered a train station that smelled so good.
'Nuf said.
Because of you Safeway, the chill is taken off a Friday night. I know you wanted to keep me in your long lines but I am heading home to my homemade apple cider and Rum, a plate of antipasto, a warm baked bread, an episode of Game of Thrones and a crackling hot fire. This girl is curling up and going solo Safeway, but thank you for your interest. I promise I will be back though. I promise, I will. read more
