I'm not sure why, but when I recently visited this Safeway latish (but not terribly late) on a weekend night, the parking lot was eerily empty. So empty, in fact, that I half-believed that the store might be closed for some reason. In true Peninsula-Safeway fashion, the doors I happened to park near were locked, so I had to push my cart all the way to the other end. It doesn't have a crazy design like a Marin County Safeway, but this store's layout is just different enough to frustrate me. But I mainly was confused because I didn't know where things were; the actual layout was fine. It wasn't ridiculous, and I like that the bread and hot-dog buns are in the same place, unlike in many Safeways where the bread in loaf form is separate from the hot-dog and hamburger buns, bagels, and muffins. Even this late in the day, the inside of the store was very clean. Not just the floors and the displays, but also the food itself. It was clear to me that employees often straighten up the shelves, and I did see many people both stocking and arranging fruits and boxes and cuts of meat as I perused the store. My cashier was very friendly. I told him I was surprised at how dead it was, and he agreed that it was very unusual. He was quick to start bagging rather than waiting to see whether I would bag everything by myself. It was so dead, in fact, that he and I were about 80 percent finished bagging the $200 or so of groceries I had bought before anyone even showed up in line behind me, and his was the only manned checkout stand open. That has never happened to me at Safeway before, and I've been to Safeway hundreds of times at more than a dozen Bay Area locations. When I was loading my groceries into my car, a street-sweeping truck arrived and began hosing down and sweeping the parking lot. He kept driving right near me, too, as I returned my cart and then walked back to my car. It was strange but also reassuring. It was already a clean parking lot, and now it was even cleaner. I usually never shop at Safeway. But when I do, I shop at this one. I needed to quickly grab some pretzels I was craving before my graveyard shift. I had looked for them in the chips aisle and realized they weren't there. Or so I thought. I quickly walked over to the self checkout where Ms. Debra was stationed. I had asked her if they sold any "Dot's Pretzels" and she did her best to assist me. She walked over to aisle 5 with me to double check. We both were able to find them together. After we found them, we had a wonderful 3 minute conversation about these pretzels and her world views. She talked about how some people are currently struggling during this economic time. Within our 3 minute conversation I could tell what kind of a person she is. She is very bright, kind, joyful, empathetic, smart, and caring! Everytime I come to this location Ms. Debra always manages to provide outstanding service. If management see's this, please give Ms. Debra a raise and employee of the year! You cannot go wrong with Safeway! Their deli food by the pound is very impressive. It's open late impressed many people at social functions when we brought a whole pound of the salad. It was unbranded when we served it, and the salad got compliments. They asked us where it was from, and we said, oh, Safeway! They were thoroughly impressed. It was good. Their $5 Friday deals are also very good! Ribs were in stock this time! There was plenty. We get lots of veggies from them too - fresh and priced well. The absolute WORST Safeway and it's my neighborhood store which makes it all the much worse. I recently started calling it HATEWAY. I can give many experiences of horrible customers service especially at the Deli, registers and really anywhere in the store. The bathrooms are HORRIBLE. I do not understand why this Safeway is so bad. It used to be Lucky's and that really wasn't that great either. It has to be management because it is consistently bad. The food is the same but DO NOT ever try to run in for 1 ITEM... I mean that mistake a few times, because there are self-checkouts there is only one actual register ever open at any given moment. They will never open more than one actual register and with four self-checkouts (if they are all working) on a regular day can not handle the basic amount of neighborhood customers. Debra takes care of the self-checkout station. She seems to be consistently there, at least almost every time I visit the Safeway on Hickey Blvd. She delivers over-the-top: Competence: She knows the self-checkout station, especially when hiccups are caused by user error. Several times, I have had to make returns, e.g., I had neglected to check the discount requirements and bought one too FEW in quantity. She expressed empathy and a no-hassle approach to the refund. She definitely knows her stuff. Patience balanced with efficiency: Debra is friendly (chit-chats when there's time) but prudently keeps an eye on the customers in queue. I appreciate that. No-one likes a long wait at the checkout counter. Customer service: Every time I interact with Debra, she has a knack for saying things that make you smile and/or feel good about the shopping experience. I would always go to self-checkout station when I see Debra, even if there's no wait at the cashier stations. Debra is a breath of fresh air in what otherwise (to me) would have been a mundane experience in a supermarket. Though I live closer to the Safeway on Manor Drive, I drive to this branch on Hickey because of the larger selection, the convenience of self-checkout, and most of all, the presence of Debra. Shoutouts to the dude with a horrible attitude working self checkout who thinks its a better use of his time to lecture an old woman on stuff instead of doing his job of actually regulating the self-checkout line. When told of people who willingly ignore rules and loudly proclaim "I'll do what I want" he just sits and stares like a goldfish. It doesn't help that due to his physicality, it looks like it bothers him every time he has to address a problem that comes up at the checkout, which is possibly what contributes to his attitude. Outside of this, they always have their other door closed, which they claim is "broken", forcing you to go past people begging for signatures or to sell you something. At least be honest and tell people you arent going to use that door anymore because of concern out of theft. If you want to shop at a place that makes you feel like an idiot for following the rules and then for again bringing up when others don't, this is the place for you. To the cashier Evelyn . I am a part time gig delivery driver and today I had a shop order at this selected Safeway location. Everything went fine until check out. The cashier changed her demeanor as soon as she found out I'm just a delivery shopper instead of a regular shopper. Maybe I'm being sensitive but she didn't even offer help with the bagging. Left the groceries there and expecting us to bagged it. We do not work for you folks at Safeway. If we helped with the bagging is because want to move things faster for you and other customers . When we used to live next door at the Avalon apartments in Pacifica, naturally, this Safeway location was our go-to grocery store because of the convenience of proximity. When we moved to San Bruno, I opted to go to the Millbrae locale on El Camino...until I finally got fed up with their lousy customer service and constant errors with prices. I have now returned as a regular customer to this Pacifica Safeway. Located in the Fairmont Shopping Center on Hickey Boulevard, finding a parking spot is no issue in the lot. When our dogs have drop-off appointments at Banfield, I find it convenient, again, that I can hop over to Safeway and grocery shop during the vet examinations. This Safeway location is not as big as the Millbrae supermarket on El Camino. Obviously, this means that the variety of inventory is not as extensive, but not at all insufficient - they have plenty of plant based items and ethnic foods. What is noteworthy about this specific store is that it has the small town market feel with a very friendly staff (quite the opposite of the rudeness you can encounter at Linda Mar). Additionally, it's very rare to find a price discrepancy on your receipt (unlike at Millbrae where it is commonplace). This is probably THE BEST Safeway in the area. read more

She's too distracted gossiping with another coworker, usually the bagger that she either would ring the item twice or she would miss the ringing the yellow discount sticker on the item. This is going to sound weird, but this is our "comfort" Safeway. We started shopping here in earnest during the pandemic, to escape the painful conditions in SF and other area stores. As things opened up, we kept coming because it's convenient in so many ways: *Always decent parking *Things are where you expect them to be and well-arranged (hello, confusing Westlake and Strawberry Village Safeways) *Generally clean and well-stocked; it's rare that we can't cross off everything on the list (hello, poorly-stocked SSF Chestnut Safeway) *No drama or fear (hello, chaotic Potrero and Marina Safeways) *The shopping center is convenient to the 280 and highway 1 and has a lot of useful businesses like a Dollar Tree, Starbucks, RiteAid, hair-cutting places, laundromat, small restaurants that are good for take-out, and two gas stations and a 7-Eleven across the street When we need to do our "big shopping" in a clean, orderly, and safe store where everything is easy to find, we pass other Safeways to come here. read more

What could improve? A store director that isn't a DEI hire and apparently wants to be friends with crew rather than scrutinizing their work, attitudes, and poor ordering in most of the departments. This location wasn't run well before Alberson bought it... but now... it's a joke. This store does not monitor the customers that come into the store with their dogs. I have seen some dogs sniffing at the produce or the meat counter or other aisles. This is very unsanitary. The Safeway down the hill in the Manor Center has a big sign at the door that says clearly that only SERVICE animals are permitted. I have been shopping at this location for a very long time. Even before it was a Safeway! I was very impressed and pleased with the service I received today from the young cashier. DULCE!!! This young lady went above and beyond to help me find a small product that unfortunately you guys did not have. She took the time to walk with me to go check if you guys had it in one of two isles. I have never in my shopping experience had somebody going out of their way to help me find something. She was awesome! This was the most pleasant experience I have had out of all the safe ways I have shopped at. It's usually not bad but she was phenomenal. Thanks to her I will be coming back to the store more frequently. FYI please stock up on your Mexican Mole! Dulce, keep smiling, being friendly, and giving the great customer service you did today! I'm a volunteer shopper for homebound seniors, so I go grocery shopping A LOT. I've gone at least 3 or 4 times a week since the beginning of this pandemic. I normally do my shopping at the Safeway near my house in Linda Mar. That Safeway is pretty crappy in the best of times, but during the pandemic it's been a dystopian nightmare: 45 minute lines to get in, constantly low inventory, with an additional 30 minute wait to check out. After months of constant frustrations, I started shopping at Hickey Safeway last week after remembering there was a third Safeway in town. Mad props to the management, because this store is AMAZING. It's like an oasis of cleanliness and organization and management. Every time I come here, it's like a shelter from the storm where I can pretend that I'm not in a world gone mad. The wait to get in is always reasonable and the line moves very quickly. The store is so well-organized and well stocked, with the aisles labeled by section. I've noticed lots of fancier products and whole categories of produce that I've never seen at my regular Safeway even before coronavirus. Their produce section is unbelievable--piled high and bountiful with so many varieties of vegetables that I'm positive Linda Mar Safeway has NEVER stocked. The customer service is also just fantastic, just super nice and very courteous. They have someone who wipes down your entire cart--not just the handles--when you come in. The first time I came here I got confused and had to ask where I should get in line to check out, because I'm so used to checkout lines starting halfway down the aisles at Linda Mar. The cashier was like, "right here"--because there was no line! It felt downright decadent. Because I'm usually shopping for 3 people at a time, I tend to unfortunately hold up whatever checkout line I'm in (sorry! :/ ). Yesterday was one of those days, and the manager opened up another checkout register just because there were two people waiting behind me. TWO PEOPLE! Read the expiration dates! My husband and I came here last night (August 16) and when we were in the yogurt aisle, we were picking out some yogurt. Uhm, I think yogurts with expiration dates of July 27th should NOT be on the shelf. And I am not talking about just 1 or 2, I found a lot. I also found other ones with August 7 dates. This by far is the cleanest Safeway I've ever been to in the entire Bay Area. I've lived in SF to Hayward and travel to random Safeway's when necessary. So lucky to live right in front of this one. Every staff member I've come across at the counter, bakery, sandwiches, and even floral shop are always so helpful and kind. Despite the time of day. It can be closing time and the cashiers still have a smile on their face and wish you safe night. Veggies are always fresh here, I feel like they restock every other 2 hours cause they always look so colorful and full. As far as the meat selection, just like a meat market, they're fresh quality but will have sale tags on meat, so possibly stay away from those cause those are probably sitting too long. No frills, no fuss. Huge open parking lot next to rite aid, dollar tree, and Starbucks to name the big stores. They have a red box and lotto machine here, if that helps! Overall. This is the newest Safeway in Pacifica's Fairmont Shopping Center where Lucky's used to be. Grand opening was on Wednesday, September 14th, 2016, with much anticipation. I avoided the opening for obvious reasons, but with this newest addition to this strip mall, it's already making a huge difference as it's more livelier now as it has injected a pulse to what was once a tired and dated area. The exterior design is very modern and sleek, and it has to be one of the most organized store I've ever been to. All the items on the shelves are neatly displayed, well-stocked and labeled. Each department's counters are very clean, tidy and showcased like model counters similar to model homes and apartments for maximum effect. It is pleasing to the eyes and shopping in this type of environment makes it easier on consumers. The Courtesy Clerk, who was working nearby, must've heard us and he told us not to worry as he was going to grab one for us. He came back with a smile and said to enjoy our shopping. Out of all the Safeway stores I've ever been to, this was the first time someone offered that to me. Even the contracted security guard was doing his job as he followed me closely from behind as I was waiting for Wifey, who had to use the restroom as we initially entered to store. The story of my life since I was 13 years old. Yes, I'm being sarcastic there, but my overall experience with this store has been more positive than negative. This is specifically for the floral department - I was trying to get some lucky baboos because they're on sale for CNY. Of the many lucky bamboos (all tagged and sized the same), I chose two to my liking. The lady who rang me up scanned the code from the tag, in disbelief, she went to the back computer and reprinted out a tag charging $10 more per lucky bamboo plant that I was ready to purchase. I had to plants. That's an extra $20. I asked her why she charged me each for $20 when the original code she scanned was only $12.99 (advertisement paper I was holdIing showed it to be on sale for $10.88 due to CNY). She said they priced it wrong when ALL the tags for lucky bamboos are exactly the same. Does that mean she needs to retag ALL the lucky bamboos? I showed her the advertisement paper and verified it's part of Safeway. She STILL DID NOT honor the price on the advertisement paper. I DO NOT buy your plants/flowers here. They will retag the flowers/plants last minute and tell you. They've been tagged incorrectly. Lesson learned. Went back to my neighborhood Safeway and they honored the price as advertised. read more

This review is strictly for the ASSistant manager (I think his name is something like Majhd) his name doesn't matter. On this occasion I was looking for Vanilla extract and because this Safeway location is not my preferred store I did not know where I can find it so I decided to ask for help. I saw three employees on isle 8. Two guys talking to each other while one was stocking maybe and another female employee further down chiming in on the guys convo giggle or what not, also stocking (closer to me) I didn't want to interrupt their oh so important conversation but couldn't find the vanilla, (I should've then just kept looking myself) but anywho, I said excuse me to get her attention THREE separate times. She fails to acknowledge me and my question when I finally got a bit closer I asked her if she worked there. I thought maybe she's with a vendor or something as I couldn't see any Safeway uniform or her name tag. But I did notice she had on her AirPods and perhaps she just couldn't hear me. But how was it that she can she hear and be all giggly towards the guys? Hmm?!! Well for the fourth time I asked her where I can find the vanilla extract and she looked at me, no words, looked over at the guys called for one of them and pointed her finger in my direction. She did not look back at me or say one single word to me. Just kept going about her business. The guys kept talking for maybe 10 more seconds but also NOT one word nor did they even look my way UNTIL I decided in my head "screw this I'll go find it myself" ( I do want to note that it seems like one of them was on a break and oddly enough he was the one that helped me in the end, thank you Eric) well I began to walk away just disappointed in their lack of customer service when I turned my cart around the corner and that's when the (I later learned) ASSistant manager is walking toward me asking me how he can help. Already pist off I turned back and said "oh now you can hear me and want to help, where can I find the vanilla extract?" He looked me dead in my eyes for about 3 seconds with Eric right behind him and homegirl staring at me as well before he said, as he's TURNING HIS BACK TO ME "oh I can't help you!" IM SORRY WHAT?!! I get that he was mad I said that to him but sir I am the customer asking for assistance and you are the ASS ISTANT manager ignoring me and then have the audacity to talk to me like that? I asked for his name and none of them wanted to even look or talk to me but he made sure to walk back towards me stating his name and of course mention " I AM THE STORE MANAGER" I later learned he is only the assistant to the store manager. Not the store manager. When I was at the register paying he made sure to walk by me, stood next to the self checkout cashier both looked over at me and he began to laugh.. laugh! 1000% unprofessional! Eric ended up helping me find the vanilla extract but I will not be asking for help finding anything if I ever set foot in that Safeway again. I would rather shop some place else. Dareen was at the register tonight, hardly offered a smile but we were immediately greeted with her weak attempt to unload our basket. She stopped and then asked us to unload our basket.
