Friday morning I went early (7:45am) - I assumed they would be restocking (produce) for the weekend, the choices were sparse. The tags that were up reflected specials ($1/red pepper, 4 packs of shucked corn, etc). At the check out the peppers rang $15 for 4, and $4.99 ea for the corn. I asked, the checker said "the prices have changed" I responded, "the tags are still up reflecting the $1/item. He repeated that 'the prices have changed' so I told him to take both off my charge. The Manager came over and overroad it - didn't ask why. I finished; pushed my paid/bagged cart back to produce and got 10 ears of fresh corn they were just putting out - I verified it was 10 for $5. I went through self-check this time and the checker there questioned what I was ringing up - he said "that's shucked corn" - I responded "then why does it still have all its husks on?". He then started digging through my cart full of my (previously paid) bags asking me "what's in here?" What happened with 'helping' customers? Match the price - it was your fault the wrong price was up. Keep you ____ hands off my purchases. I've shopped in this store for 17 years - not anymore; too many other choices. read more

The deli at this Safeway store is right on the money. There was so money available and ready to help me with my easy deli order. I ordered a half pound of the Amish potatoes salad and a half pound of the smoked mozzarella penne salad. For my lunch the rest of the week I also ordered a half pound of the mesquite smoked turkey breast. I was also glad to see that sesame seed bagels however they only had those in six packs which was definitely more than I need. On a spur note, I couldn't find the half & half cold Arizona Tea that I like, and I don't believe every Safeway store has those. This store does a pretty good job keeping most items in stock. All in all, it was a quick trip at this store today, and I didn't run I to any issues. read more

HARASSED & HAD MY CART TAKEN AWAY FROM ME, by an EMPLOYEE/"MANAGER"!!! Shopping for many items for every aspect of life and it was a full cart of items, because it's MY PREROGATIVE as a CUSTOMER! First, a relatively nice worker named Charles approached me and asked what I was up to. Obviously I'm shopping and doing nothing wrong. He offered/insisted on bringing me a larger shopping cart. I agreed, and thought he was just trying to be helpful. After I transferred all my items over into the bigger shopping cart, I began to notice Charles kept walking down whatever aisle I was in every few minutes or so. It was this moment when I initially began to feel like I was being watched, and I was EXTREMELY UNCOMFORTABLE! Just a few moments later, a rude guy in a white button down shirt, looking like a supervisor or manager of some sort. Never got his name, but he was an older gentleman with balding hair and a grey mustache. Right away I was uncomfortable even more. All I was doing was shopping for my family, and he made it clear that having lots of items in my cart was "triggering ALL of their security cameras, and had got all their attention!" But WHY?!?! He stood there with me looking through all of the items in my cart and making me feel like I was doing something wrong or illegal. I WAS JUST SHOPPING AT SAFEWAY (for the very last time, EVER!)!!! So THIS IS WHAT FINALLY PUT ME OVER THE EDGE.... The white button down shirt, mustached, balding "supervisor" returned to harass me AGAIN, and this time he brought me a brand new, empty cart, and then he proceeded to literally take my cart away! As he has already walked halfway down the aisle I was in with my cart, he finally stops and turns around to answer my questions. This little man child of a supervisor kept repeating that he was going to keep MY cart that's nearly full of products "up front for when I'm ready to check out." I wasn't even close to being done going through all of the aisles, and I repeated to him that I didn't want a new cart, that I hadn't even fully decided on several items in my cart, and asked him how was I supposed to remember specifics about the items/products that were in my cart. He REFUSED to let me keep using my cart. Said it was a quote, "safety and security issue!" This man was the rudest, most obnoxious, and degrading employee/worker I've ever been forced to communicate with! He told me to just keep shopping with this new and empty cart he had brought to me. I NEVER once asked for help, I NEVER once asked for another cart (even though TWO different employees brought me replacement carts for my stuff. All I was doing at this Safeway/grocery store in Burke Centre, Virginia was trying to shop for many people that can't afford much of anything in life right now. BUT, it was completely ruined by this obnoxious little man child employee or supervisor...whatever he is, but he doesnt even know what his job is! Quite a big store this is! Was shocked a bit by this on the last visit. The parking situation is pretty good as well. Recently they had a great sale on yogurts and cereals. My hope is this and all Safeways will continue this. For some time, they've been among the highest cost regular grocery stores. With inflation, some increases are expected, but I do better elsewhere, As for the check out process well handled. They have traditional cashiers and the self serve machines. There are a few quirks with these. That's normal in all types of stores that use these. This one isn't the most modern, but high marks for cleanliness and organization. This review is strictly of the Customer Service desk in relation to receiving a Western Union transfer. I've never had to send or receive a transfer before, but my bank suggested it as a workaround when my electronic transfer of funds between banks was delayed by 72 hours and I had to pay a contractor at my house same day. She initiated two Western Union transfers for $999 each, she sent me the money transfer control numbers (MTCNs), and looked up locations where I could pick it up. She said "Any Safeway grocery store can do it." This was the THIRD Safeway I had been to in 2.5 hours to complete the two transfers. First one, they only had cash on hand for one. Second store, by policy they would only give me a maximum of $500 and the rest as a money order. So this was my third attempt, and three times a charm as they say. I arrived at 7pm on a Monday. I waited maybe 1-2 minutes at the Customer Service desk for assistance. I woman by the name of Bunny helped me right away. She knew what she was doing, and did not need to call for reinforcements. She went in the back and retrieved the cash needed for the transaction. After I showed the MTCN and my ID, she had me sign and exchanged the cash. Easy peasy! It was amazing the lengths I had to go to this day for two Western Union money transfers, but luckily the Burke location had competent staff who provided excellent customer service. (Thank you, Bunny!) I know Western Union transfers are a bit of a holdout from a bygone era, and after visiting two other Safeway's for this very transaction, I'm happy to report that the Burke Centre Parkway store has their act together. This particular Safeway is larger, offers "quality dinners to do" in a Kiosk, and seems to me to offer the best combined price and product availability, more so than other Safeway and Giant stores. Unfortunately, one major disappointment is their recent elimination of their lunch and Starbucks seating area, which eliminates at least for me, a major attraction to this store and wreaks profit over customer service. The Giant near GMU, also with a Starbucks inside, offers the closest seating café inside the store. One other pricing policy seems to me to be deceptive, false advertising, and profiteering at the customer's cost. If you see a product advertised inside the store, say cherries for $2.99 select it and attempt to pay for it at the $2.99 price BOLDLY marked in the store, the register charges you $4+ or so with no attention to the overcharge. In fact, in the very fine print in the store, that price is only valid if you order the item online before you reach the store. But you are not online at that moment. If you are a senior, you probably cannot read that fine print on the sign. I felt swindled, knowingly, and cheated. Prices need to be transparent, and if the price on the item does not reflect the price in the store, it should be clearly visible at the store price. It's like selling me a car with a bad transmission without the buyer's knowledge. Shameful. read more

This location is on Burke Center Parkway near Chipotle, Panisa, Cold Stone, Potomac Running, etc. There is a Starbucks in the safeway, if you are in need of some caffeine during your trip here...but there is an actual Starbucks store in the shopping center. They have a wide variety of goods here from grocery to toiletries to flowers to cards. The customer service was suprisingly great!!! My mom and I are forever grateful to Norma and Sung at the floral department. I came here to get my brother's corsage for his prom date. We called another Safeway location (near Old Keene Mill) who said that they were too busy to take an order. We called this location and they notified us that they have 2 styles and that we could come in to take a look. When we went in, after my work (Monday)...around 6pm, no one was in the floral section. We went to customer service to get someone to help us. Norma, the manager, came and looked for the corsages or a picture of the corsages. After 12 minutes of looking, Norma said she will ask the employee in charge of the corsages the next morning and send us a picture of them via text. That was super nice of her. My mom and I came in on Friday to get the corsage, and they had made 2 for us to choose from. We requested a gold ribbon--which they went out and bought at another store. We were so impressed and loved how the corsage looked. Big thank you to Norma and Sung at the floral department, who were helpful to us every step of the way. Will continue to do business here for homecomings and proms in the future! Definitely recommend. read more

I realize no grocery store or staff is perfect, having shopped here for five years I 'know' some of the workers and know they are trying hard to keep up, especially during Covid. But I shake my head at what I'm sharing because this is a conscious decision to take advantage of customers. When you run a special on porterhouse steaks and only have one in the package include a tenderloin, you have consciously decided to cheat customers from the full cut of meat. Everyone knows the tenderloin is the best part of the steak, when you buy these steaks as a treat and it says 'porterhouse' you should get 'porterhouse'!! Family pack or not, Safeway cheats people by leaving out this part of the steak on purpose. Don't advertise porterhouse steaks if you're not going to include the FULL steak. And folks, don't buy the family packs, you won't be getting all of what you're paying for. read more

He seemed annoyed when I asked for a physical card, rather than putting in my phone number. the flower shop person was unfriendly and unresponsive. there was no one manning the Starbucks kiosk. This is the closest grocery store to my house. It is a good location to do weekly shopping, though there are other close locations that are nicer inside and carry more items. They have undergone several major renovations over the years which have significantly improved the store. My favorite things: Bakery has the most amazing bagels for $5 a dozen $5 specials throughout the store every Friday Super friendly service in the deli and bakery Big selection of organic produce I may have an addiction to their cake icing... but I won't admit it!!! My least favorite things: The floral shop is too expensive Too many checkouts are closed during peak times Self checkouts hang up too often Low energy checkout clerks It is a bit dark inside with the dim lights and dark paint They don't carry a lot of my favorite brands because it is a smaller store They allow employees to smoke by the entrance doors which is gross There is nobody to help load groceries for those who need that service I give this a three stars, only because one mile away is another location that is much larger and carries my preferred brands. I come to this Safeway a lot because of its convenient location, and it definitely falls under the category of A-OK, in my opinion. It's always relatively well-stocked, they have a wide variety of products, and a robust ready-made foods area. This Safeway has an in-store Starbucks, which is nice although it can sometimes be hard to track down the barista during slow times. There are a bunch of self-checkout counters, which are super useful when I'm just running in for a couple of things, although I find sometimes that certain items can be difficult to find with the way the store is laid out (I could not FOR THE LIFE OF ME figure out where they kept the trash bags the other day when I was there!). I also agree with other reviewers that their floral shop is very expensive (extending to the cost of getting balloons inflated here. Priceyyyyy!) All in all, it's not like I'm going to stop shopping here, the location and ease of doing so is far too convenient, and in general, my experiences are always A-OK, so keep on keeping on, Safeway! read more

Today I was surprised to see a cashier (lane 2 ) on her phone while the customer in front of me was using the payment machine waiting for her payment to process. Then again on her phone as I started to pay for my items, she remained on her phone until the register printed out my receipt. She handed me my receipt in complete dead silence--not even a thank you! I blame this behavior and poor mannerisms on management! This young girl has absolutely no idea what is going on in the real world--people are struggling to put food on their! In the midst of this chaos Safeway has really stepped it up. They have been amazing with the grocery pick up. I have been getting all my items pretty much and if not they been great at substituting the item. I never used Safeway before because Giant is close to my house but they haven't been so great. Why I walked into this "grocery" store knowing how horrible it is was my mistake. This location continues to sell produce that is, in my opinion, 3rd or 4th qualify. Better produce at a 7-11. Wilted, mushy, way overripe or simply rotten, describes the apples, green beans, snap peas, avocados and more. The sweet corn was worm eaten upon pulling back the husks. Wegman's, Giant, or even Super H would not put out such a pathetic array. Now I will remember to keep driving past this one! read more

Good store, good prices, selection is reliable nine times out of ten. Staff is very friendly and helpful, and I stop in for as many as 4-5 visits a week. On a less positive note they could use more than one barista at the Starbucks when they have to get supplies and such, I wouldn't mind having a few more open checkstands too. The Good: - Fair prices. - Better selection and quality of produce and baked goods compared to Giant. - Slightly better organized than Giant. - They offer reusable bags for purchase. It's about time! The Bad: - Starbucks in every store. Brilliant business strategy. - No self check-out lines! - When busy (or not), the number of cash registers opened are insufficient. - Express lanes aren't much faster than normal lanes. As much as I dislike Giant, I'd rather shop there than at Safeway for convenience. Nothing's worse than having only 5 items and then queuing for over 25 minutes behind a customer with over 30 items at Safeway because the "express" line stretches all the way to the produce section. I have shopped at this store at least once a week for nearly 15 years, but after today I will not be going back. I've had issues with some of the employees before, mostly due to their attitude, vulgar language in front of kids, and overall rudeness. While the store itself is OK and I do like shopping there, some of the employees are so rude it makes me want to shop elsewhere. Several cashiers won't give you the time of day no matter what. I'm not a chatty person by any means, but I expect a greeting at the very least. I always go out of my way to say "Hello, how are you?" or something similar, and lately it seems the employees just hate their jobs and are too miserable to even respond. This is mostly the cashiers I'm talking about. This morning I had a cashier named Jose who was so rude I nearly stopped the transaction and left the store. He refused to acknowledge me, didn't answer a question when I asked, then tried to argue with me and berate me for no reason. The store currently has a limit on some items due to the virus, and I completely understand and applaud them for doing so. However, the item list clearly says "Limit of 12 cans of vegetables". I grabbed 12 cans total and went on to get other items including a 4 pack of soup and 2 cans of chili for hot dogs. The cashier Jose argued with me and told me I was a "bad person" for going over the 12 can limit. I was so surprised by his comment and had no clue what he was even talking about! He kept making snide remarks like "it's your conscious" and "you'll have to live with it". Finally I realized he was trying to say there was a 12 can TOTAL limit on all store items, but this was not true. There was no sign listing a limit on soup, chili, or other canned items, just the sign about canned vegetables on the canned goods aisle. I tried explaining this to Jose multiple times and he kept making rude comments under his breath. I wanted to speak to a store manager but there was no one up front at the time. I purposely followed the rules and got bitched at because the cashier did not understand the policy. When I got home I almost turned around to go back and return my entire order. Instead I decided this is the last time I will be disrespected by a Safeway employee at this store. I have never had an issue with any other Safeway let alone any other store; there's just something about this store and the employees they hire. Sorry for the long review but just wanted to let other's know of my experience. I won't be returning to this Safeway, and will shop at the other one on Old Keene Mill Road instead. This is the most amateurish organization I have ever shopped at. If you can mute the vulgar language of the checkout people while standing in line, you just might be able to mute your taste buds while eating something from their bakery or deli. While I enjoy the occasional coworker bashing, I don't need it from my checkout counter guy. I can do without the f-bombs and HR threats while trying to get my family's food. Occasionally, I'm blessed by not having to walk to a break area to find a person to assist in the self check-out aisle (age verification for a bottle of wine). The straw that broke the camel's back today was the rock hard, stale as a Dad joke, nearly decomposing cup cakes I bought for dessert. I can usually forgive poos service or a crap product, but not both. I will actively boycott, and discourage other patrons of, this garbage heap of a "food" source. I use this store occasionally because it is relatively close to where I live. It is good for picking up a few items between major shopping trips. I prefer other stores when making a major shopping trip. This location is relatively small and doesn't have the selection available from competitiors. Their produce selections are not the best. Rather than being fresh, seafood is or was previously frozen. read more

I went to purchase some gift cards. Upon purchase I requested if I could get an individual receipts for each gift card . At the end the team member rang the gift cards[ each had a different amount] Although this was not ideal we just ended up cutting each gift cards proof of activation instead of a full gift card activation receipt. read more

Terrible service. Employees do not care and don't even seem like they want to be there. One if my items were wrong prices at the register, I told the self service cashier and she said "ohh it's organic so it is more expensive" I was like I didn't ask you to describe the item I'm telling you the item is priced wrong at the register. Anyways I paid and went back took a pic for her and then she changed it. Any other Safeway or grocery store the cashier will check immediately. While I have shopped here a few times, this review pertains to my most recent visit, when I did not even go into the store. It was about three in the morning, thirty-three degrees out, and I was out of gas. I had just been able to get to the parking lot, and I realized the gas station was closed, and I did not have a card available (only cash). I walked to the CVS to purchase one of those little Visa gift cards to use at the pump, but they were closed. A Safeway employee had just stepped out for a break, though, so I went over to ask if he could help me. I did not catch his name, but he called another employee--Donald--who came out to the rescue. I know I probably looked kind of sketchy, offering cash for them to use their card to pay for an equal amount of gas, but they helped me anyway, and I sincerely appreciate it. That's some fantastic customer service, right there. Usually, that customer service face doesn't happen unless they're actually in the store, but these gentlemen went out of their way to help me, and I can't tell them enough that I appreciate them for their kindness. Any business that employs associates like Donald and the other gentleman (a slender, Asian man) will get my business. Simple as that. read more

I returned my empty shopping cart to the store sidewalk and turned to walk to my car today when a Safeway employee (wearing his outdoor vest/uniform) yelled to me "Ma'am, the cart belongs over here at the end of the row here with the other carts." So basically he was ordering me to put the cart back exactly where he wanted it to go, ignoring that I had returned it in a good enough place, where other carts also stood. Given that he was pushing a bunch of carts, naturally, I told him, "That's YOUR JOB." Now, I have never, EVER, in my 61 years, been TOLD to do some employee's job at a retail store. I'd like to have added, "If I do that, then who the hell needs YOU?" I will wait for an APOLOGY from the Safeway Management before I even THINK about returning to that grocery store. read more

IRMA who had picked up my calls, simply said she was too busy and didn't listen to my story on why I was frustrated. All I needed were some answers on some of the products the store carried. But, Irma picked up my call and redirected me 3 times in all 3 different phone calls. NOT even listening to my side of the story on how each section didn't know what to do, she simply ignores me. I keep checking this place out from time to time hoping my opinion will improve but I so often have poor results from their butcher department and can easily find better sales on every product that I go to find.
