I love coming to this grocery store to pick up my favorite Samanco brand ice cream sandwiches in the flavors strawberry, matcha, or vanilla. The store is always clean and has novel food items unavailable in most grocery stores. The sandwich is a unique vanilla wafer shaped like a fish with ice cream inside it. They make sushi fresh there and have better prices than most grocery stores. I love the heavy Tobiko (fish caviar) sprinkled all over the California sushi roll for only $5.99. I bought two sushi rolls, a giant amount of seaweed salad , and three boxes of ice cream sandwiches there. $40 for all the groceries - not bad. I, also, signed up for a free H Mart card. H mart offers a shopping card to use when you buy groceries for store deals & to collect points for a $10 gift card. I shop at some of the local H Marts. Primarily in Fairfax and Falls Church. This is a smaller market in comparison to the newer in Fairfax. Prices are reasonable and produce is fresh. For some reason, the layout is sort of wonky. If you need assistance, they will help you. The staff is busy tidying up, stocking and arranging items. The lady at the checkout could use some coaching up. She did not greet me as I stood there and she was preoccupied with her cell phone every secobd she could get. I greeted her, because that's what humans do at the checkout. When she did speak, I could barely make out what she said because she was close to whispering and still looking at her phone. They also have an ordered food counter (called Mat Jib) which is open from 10am-8pm, 7 days a week. They also have a bakery with yummy bread and pretty cakes (I've never tried the cakes). They have a nice selection of goods from fresh fruits and vegetables, frozen foods, instant foods, premade foods, instant ramen, snacks, desserts, etc. Its not as modern and updated as the others (e.g., Fairfax) but it's also not quite as busy and it's closer to my home. read more

Came here with my daughter to purchase some sauces. There were two asian gentleman who followed us to every aisle and throughout the store. It was very uncomfortable and even my young daughter noticed, so i unexpectedly had to use it as a teaching moment for her, and tell her that people will profile you even when you're doing nothing wrong. Place is incredibly clean and large compared to what I'm used to. However, it did not have all the selections I'm used to having (I'm used to the selections in New York) but I did find some new and interesting products. The bakery was okay. The restaurant was small but good. The little stationary and Knick knack section was cute as well. My daughter enjoyed that. Service was good. First off this is one of the area's prettiest grocery stores. Absolutely stunning! Great employees as well. This clean and well organized store, should be on a retail magazine cover. Going in here is quite an immersive experience each time. I do like this store, but there's a reason I give it a recommendation, but three stars maximum. H Mart used to be the place to go for fruits and vegetables. They are still good quality, but the prices are approaching Giant and Safeway territory. Inflation is a problem, but Aldi is where I'll go for these items. Prime drinks are $2.88 each. That's nuts, as you can get them at Walmart for a $1.00 less each. This is too expensive, and value is my #1 priority shopping anywhere. If you're in the area this is a wonderful store, but I hope they can go back, to being more competitive. read more

Have purchased rice at Hmart for years and havent had any issues until recently. Had to knock down a star because there were rice weevil bugs in the organic mixed white/sweet rice we bought here. We also noticed what looked like hole punched circular holes in the bag. Had a similiar incident a few months ago with the same type of rice except it was purchased at the Gaithersburg, MD location. Will not be purchasing this product again at any Hmart. read more

This review is more for the restaurant in it than the store itself, but as for the store: Glad my mom who lives in Fairfax has a more accessible h mart! It's one of the smaller ones but it has everything I usually need. The only things they're really lacking on are the American/other-nationality products. Otherwise they have great fresh produce. The H-mart in Merrifield is pretty big, and the one in Annandale is on the smaller side. I would say burke is between these two. There's also one in Centreville. The restaurant has added on some items since I've last been here--including (spicy codfish stew), my favorite!! They give you a big portion for the price on a lot of the items. I wish they could offer boricha (barley tea). Just have the hot and cold water dispenser for now. They also have a banchan (side dish) station with kimchi, pickled daikon radish, marinated beans, and sprouts. They also have a catering/bulk menu. For $59.99-79.99, you can serve 15 people some mandu dumplings, spicy teriyaki chicken, spicy seafood soup, spicy beef noodle soup, and a whole bunch of other things. A heads-up for the parties of 2+ eating at the restaurant though--sometimes they will announce that your order is ready and they will be missing items. I think maybe each item prints separately for them or something, but I saw it happen four times where they would announce that something is ready only to have it missing at least one entree; they would subsequently announce the ticket number again later. The service can be hit or miss. Since they're not native English speakers, they may be hard to understand, and they in turn may not understand you either if you have any questions or comments. My mom and I both speak Korean so we were able to communicate with them just fine, but another family was white and has trouble communicating with them about the aforementioned problem about a missing dish. read more

I was so excited they opened up this H Mart in the fall of 2016. We would usually shop at Lotte on Braddock but it was slightly far and usually hard to get out of. We really like that H Mart is closer, although sometimes it's also just as hard to get out of as well sometimes. H Mart sells a lot of Korean products and brands--some are reasonably priced and others are a little pricey for my taste. You can find a lot of household items and things towards the left by the frozen foods section. Some things they sell are mattress pads, slippers, heating fan, humidifier, rice cooker, pots/pans, cooking/eating utensils, and the list goes on. Food items are also reasonably priced, almost inexpensive! But you might have to compare prices because I feel like it can vary some times. They have a bakery where they bake bread fresh daily and a little Ktown food court right next to it where they serve "Authentic Korean Food for Everyone." I usually get the bulgolgi because it comes with rice and miso soup. It used to be $9.99 but I just found out it increased by a dollar (still cheaper than the one at Lotte). It's nice to eat here because they have a dining area and you can serve yourself some banchan that they make available next to the food court. From the bakery, I usually get the sweet twisty bread but they usually run out of a lot of their baked goods a few hours before closing. Best to get them in the morning. Speaking of morning, I've also run errands in the morning here and they usually have different stations throughout the store where you can try some of their products, which are usually food items. In the past I've tried their persimmon, instant noodle, Pocky, and dumplings. I remember one morning I came with my then 1 year old and it was nice I could "feed" him a bunch of the samples! It makes running errands a pleasant one. H Mart also has a rewards card which can be helpful at times. One time we paid over $50 at one shopping trip and they let us choose one free food item displayed by the window. Pretty sweet surprise! This place is definitely handicapped accessible and they have public restrooms towards the back on the left side. Unfortunately, it's by the seafood section so if you don't like the smell, just hold your breath. Overall, we enjoy coming to H Mart, especially my parents when they come into town from out of state. My dad, particularly, loves shopping at Asian specialty stores because he can find what he needs when making Filipino dishes and this H Mart is that go-to market! I had heard of H Mart but never stopped in until we realized we moved 5 minutes away from one and my partner said it's worth checking out. While you can't (or I couldn't) do all of your grocery shopping here, you can find both Asian and American products. There is a bakery and a cafe in the back-both with an emphasis on Korean cuisine. The selection of fruit and vegetables is extensive and so much less in price than the average grocery store. They have a home goods section which can be fun to browse. They have a great selection of different herbs, spices, sake, and beer. My partner traveled often to Eastern Asia for work when he was with DoD and loves shopping at H Mart because he can recreate some of his favorite dishes. Staff has always been very friendly and the store seems pretty clean. I'll definitely continue to shop at H Mart-glad I finally "discovered" it! read more

This H Mart, located what was once Giant, has recently opened! They are still running some of their Grand Opening specials, so make sure you stop by to take advantage of all them deals! Just like other H Mart locations, this location has an extensive/variety of items that they offer, such as banchans and readily-marinated meats (bulgogi, dwegi bulgogi, etc.), snack items, candies, produce, specialty items, houseware goods, and a Korean bread shop. The place is large, and the items seem to be more organized and well-stocked. All the ahjummas were friendly and welcoming, and they all took the time to get to know their customers and share the good deals/sales that were going on. The hubs and I picked up some Korean coffee, Japanese curry, and some KBBQ meats. After what seemed like months with a "Coming Soon" sign, H-Mart finally opened in the old Giant location in "downtown" Burke. This was my first visit to an Asian grocery store; I was fascinated. Their produce section had typical products but included many items that I had never seen before and that looked very interesting. They had an extensive selection of rice, noodles, a refrigerator full of kimchi varieties, a large selection of fresh meat and seafood, and a cafe area. I was there during their grand opening, and the store was mobbed. Parking spaces were hard to find. I frequently pass by the location on the way home from work, and the parking lot looks packed. read more

I'm so happy that this Hmart is so close to my house! The parking here is great because it's part of a large plaza. The store itself is super clean and I've always found the produce, fish and meats to be super fresh. One of the great things about Korean markets like Hmart is the prepared cuts of meat and pork already cut for you for quick cooking whether it's for hot pot, barbeque, or whatever you wish! This Hmart also has a decent selection of homewares to include soaps, detergents, cutlery, tupperwares, and even bedding (Korean comforters are amazing!). Of course, there is kimchi and a large selection of banchan! Although not as big of a selection as a Super Hmart, this one does the job as I'm always replenishing my kimchi, pickled garlic, cucumber and radish to name a few. I think Hmart Burke is a great addition to the area! However, if you want some more obscure items and perhaps more variety of a certain item (banchan, snacks, etc) the Super Hmart are the way to go. read more

Since this HMart opened in Burke, my husband and I have become frequent fliers here. We love that you can get any number of specially prepared Korean meats (for hot pot, or barbecue, or just for whatever!), banchan dishes, and more -- plus, the array of fruits & vegetables are so reasonably priced and often really great! You can still find most of the brands you'd find at other stores, although I do still feel that the majority of non-Asian brands are more expensive here. Still, it's very nice to be able to have a one-stop shop if you don't feel like going to multiple places for your weekly grocery shopping. Staff is always friendly, the store is clean and easy to navigate. Aside from the unavoidable fishiness that you detect in the back corner of the store (where, duh, the fish is!), I haven't had any issues other than occasionally having staff not be able to help me locate something I'm looking for (whether because of a communication issue or if they don't carry it, or whatever.) They also have a restaurant and bakery inside, which we haven't actually eaten at yet but there always seems to be a decent number of people there. I'm personally SO glad that HMart came to Burke, in what is otherwise a sea of Safeways and Giants. read more

In our suburban area, produce is considered extremely rare. At least that is what the major chain grocers want you to think. They only carry "American" produce and charge a small fortune for it. I will let you in on a secret... international markets! We have five within a ten mile radius of Burke. HMart has been expanding and I was elated when they signed a lease in a pretty dead strip mall where a chain had closed. The space is just perfect for HMart. Parking is convenient. Looking at the store from a physical perspective, the layout is a lot like a chain. Shop the outside perimeter to get the essentials. The flow of the layout is really logical and allows you to get things like meat, fish, and frozen foods just before checkout. The store is kept super clean and is brightly lit. The produce department is huge. The items available give you so many choices and options. A lot of the time there is someone giving out samples of things you may not have ever had. The meat department has a really nice selection of quality meats. They have kobe beef! Marinated chicken thighs, pork belly, and beef are amazing! I don't know what they marinade ingredients are but it is flavorful and not spicy. You can also buy pre-marinated bulgogi beef which is great. Meats can be purchased in a traditional cut or in a finely shaved cut which is good for making Mongolian BBQ at home. The fish department is also huge. You can buy all types of fish and shellfish. Fish can be purchased whole or cut to your specifications. The price is way better than the chains and the selection is bigger. The beer/wine section has a large variety of sake and Asian beers, many of which are cold and ready to go. HMart also has two aisles of what we call "stuff." There are kitchen gadgets, pots and pans, dishes, blankets, specialty cooking tools, humidifiers, etc. It is a fun hodgepodge to look through and I have found some super cool things there! My favorite purchase was a small humidifier that uses an inverted water bottle instead of having a massive water tank that can get smelly and bulky. The last thing that I love about this HMart is in the back of the store there is a bakery and quick stop restaurant. The bakery has awesome bread and pastries, along with fancy desserts. The cakes and fancy desserts are around $15 for a size that will serve 8 people. The bakery also serves a variety of coffee drinks and they make the best bubble tea in the area! the restaurant has a huge variety of items ranging from not spicy to spicy, and has a lot of vegetarian options. I like what I've seen so far. This is one of the more compact Hmarts, but they sure do pack a lot into this relatively smaller space while keeping everything organized. Like others may have already mentioned, it's a lot cleaner than the one in Annandale (need to update my review and say that place is a mess and I'm never coming back!). I've heard that this Hmart is pricier than other area Hmarts. I don't shop at Hmarts often enough to know the difference, but the prices seemed reasonable to me. I'm glad that all items were clearly labeled, including information on their country of origin. For instance, a bin of garlic was labeled as being "Product of Spain." Most produce looked good, fresh. (Evil stink eye for the customers who think it's okay to leave their discarded toothpick from a sample in the bunch of plum tomatoes. Not cool!). The variety is quite impressive. There's an entire aisle devoted to ingredients typically found in South Asian dishes. The fresh seafood area was also quite impressive. Their frozen, sweet treats include ube desserts and various brands of mochi ice cream. My happiest find this past weekend and first visit: American wagyu beef (I don't care if it's a gimmick) in various cuts. So tender, buttery--absolutely delicious! I also grabbed a small tub of pre-marinated meats, per the mentions. Besides the quality and variety of items, I was also surprised and happy to see that this Hmart wasn't too crowded on a Sunday afternoon. It might be because this location is not on main road, requires a little more driving. In either case, consider this Hmart if you're tired of fighting for parking at the Fairfax store. This place is basically the compact version of Super H Mart in fairfax. It's smaller, but it's got everything (including super fresh sashimi grade fish cuts+an awesome food court corner). One lady in particular showed me where the marinated bulgogi was, showed me the bulgogi marinades available (in case I preferred that), and instructed me on the veggies to pair it with.
