This Safeway has a nice floral selection and I received good customer service from the friendly lady working in the floral department. That's pretty much it. I routinely spend about $200/week here and struggle to find a lane with a cashier. I shouldn't have to ring up my groceries when I'm spending hundreds of dollars. Thats fine if I'm only buying a few things but if I'm ringing up $200 in goods then I need to be put on the payroll....On more than one occasion I have purchased expired food here. I came inside to find something sweet so I headed to the bakery area. The white old lady was very rude and heard yelling from her mouth to some workers of her very unprofessional. The worst employee hiring process I've ever had! They take long time to get employees into training and when I tried calling them about it they never answered about my training. The manger said he had been trying to call me but that is a lie, they never called me once. The management takes a long time to get employees into the system, so if you're considering working here I would rethink that option. read more

I used to come to this Safeway regularly but after having many bad experiences with the meat department, I now go to Giants unless I am having a vegetarian night. The meat in the packages at Safeway are often expired or look straight up nasty. I'm talking about pork chops that have turned green, steaks with brown spots, leaky chicken packages, and ground meat that smells like vinegar. I've had to make trips to Giants after coming here and leaving empty handed because none of the meat looked palatable. I've also had to throw away meat I bought here because even though they were within expiration and looked okay, there was a terrible stench when I opened the package at home. I noticed Safeway now offer these "Ready to Cook" meals which is basically a marinated and prepared meat dish (such as meatloaf, marinated chicken breasts) that you can just pop in the oven without preparation. Prices are good and I was really tempted to get them to save time on cooking, but then I remembered how bad the meat is at this supermarket and realized it wouldn't be wise. The produce department also has a lot of old, spotty, wrinkly and moldy fruits and veggies. Giants is slightly better in this regard. That being said, I still go to this Safeway to buy non perishables. I've always enjoyed Safeway's O Organics line and this store has lots of that in stock. read more

I stopped in here this Saturday very early. There wasn't a line outside which was great. I purchased some microwavable items - Kraft Deluxe Macaroni and Cheese, and Aunt Jemima Pancake on the Go. I like the NEW Aunt Jemima product best. 1) I like using 70 exact seconds on the microwave per their specific instructions; 2) the result is a perfect semi soft pancake in a jar. I enjoy microwave Mac and Cheese too but it's been out for awhile. Overall great store in this updated shopping plaza. read more

After shopping, looking for a check stand to have groceries rung up, only one open. Noticed an employee possibly tiding up candy/magazines & asked would he please call for another person to open a check out. He responded No, just stand in the one open check line. There were 4 customers in line with full carts. It would've been better customer service to just call for assistance & open another check out, or maybe offer to help me to use self check out. I shop at Safeway every week. Last night I was near the bread and I saw 2 huge roaches. For some reason I didn't immediately leave. I walked through the wine section and I found 4 more. Then at the beer section I found one smashed up onto the cooler and another right in the middle of the aisle. Within the first 10 minutes of being there I saw over 10 roaches. I had to leave. I showed the manager and she did not act surprised. I appreciate the customer service I receive from the employees here, but I will not be back any time soon. read more

Drove here a couple of nights ago to do some quick shopping! Wasn't impressed at all with their selection of items and high prices. I found it a bit hard to navigate the store. I bought mostly fruits and veggies and ready made salads. When I got to the check out the person helping me wasn't sure about what kind of potatoes I had, hmmm ok, no big deal I get it, but he just stood there doing nothing for a minute until I asked if i should go back and check? His reply: "if you want to". Well... what's the alternative? Just standing here?. Anyways, when I got to my house I realized two of the salads I bought had expired 5 days ago! I blame me for not checking, but hey you would think someone would be on top of that at a store like this! Very disappointed. read more

Stay away from this Safeway location. How they handle customer service is extremely disappointing. On 4/12 evening my husband went shopping at Safeway. He spent several hundreds in total and was in a bit of a rush at the cashier. He accidentally left a bag of groceries worth $60 placed in our own sturdy grocery bag (not store provided plastic bag). We called this Safeway the next day on 4/13. The kind man (not providing name as courtesy) at self-check picked up our call right away and tried to find the store manager but he couldn't get a hold of the store manager and we waited on the line for 20min before he came back to say that he couldn't find the manager anywhere. He then told us however, if we bring our receipt back, they can solve this for us and get us a refund. On 4/14, we came back and spoke with the store manager. She said there's nothing she could do. If it were just one or two items, she could just refund it, but seeing that it's worth a solid amount, all she could tell us was that there's not much she could do. We then asked to at least get our nice reusable grocery bag back from cashier station #2 but our bag is nowhere to be found. Not at lost and found, not at cashier, which makes you wonder, what did they do with our bag of groceries? Did someone take it home? Did they toss our grocery bag even though there are plenty of much inferior grocery bags stored at lost and found? When we told the manager we have many grocery store options in the area, her attitude changed, out of pity said: "I feel bad for you guys, how about you go pick all the items and let me know?" At this point, it was not about the money anymore, rather, it was how customer service handled things from the start. We didn't accept the pity offer. We even used to go to this Safeway pharmacy, but how they dealt with this situation is very disappointing. We will not be coming back to this location. There are so many options around us , Giant, Aldi, Wegmans, Trader Joe's, LA Mart. This Safeway will not be missed. The silver lining is that we saw other reviews here that mentioned roaches yikes. It feels weird to be reviewing a grocery store....but this place is amazing. Moving here from the Midwest, it has been really hard to find a good grocery- and this place doesn't disappoint. The store is really big, and has a Starbucks inside- which is awesome. They have a nice deli selection, including hot soups, take & bake pizzas, and an olive bar. Their bakery selection is much bigger than other Safeway locations, and the bread I bought today was super fresh. This Safeway has a massive wine & beer selection, it honestly reminds me of some of the Wegmans stores. They also have a really nice meat case, with a lot of beef, chicken, and seafood. And their produce selection is also great. It's one of the few places where you can truly get everything in one trip. read more

I drive over to the store and the automatic doors don't open. I check for signs and the only sign they have is for the hours of operation that say until 12am. I walk down to the other door and the same thing. As I walk back to the store someone is coming out and I ask them if they are open and he said "No, we're closed." If they don't have the courtousy to have a sign stating they closed early then they don't deserve my business anymore. And this was after I drove all the way to Harris Teeter and they closed at 10 (24hr store) but they had a sign stating why they closed early. read more

Despite it being in Kingstowne, where you feel like it's a good neighborhood, I constantly regret coming to this Safeway location because I usually run into at least 1 angry customer that looks unstable, hostile, and will yell at me for no reason while I'm just minding my own business but the employees here just act like they don't hear it. Don't come here and don't bring your kids! I have my own opinion about the grocery quality as well... but forget it! I stopped in here on 4-11-2021 for some necessities. I've shopped here before so I knew what to expect. I was able to get in and out relatively quickly and with limited to no interaction with others. Success!! I was able to find what I needed. One item that seemed to be hidden were the eggs. I did get help in finding them, so my shopping trip was complete. Cucumbers were nice and firm!! One of the nicest Safeway's I've been to. It's almost on bar with your typical Harris Teeters. The only thing that's odd about it is that there is no place to put the carts, so if you're a decent human being you'll return it in front of the store. It's clean and massive and have various products. If you wanna get better deals, you should get their free membership right away. I usually purchase natural or organic products. They have good enough. Cashiers are so so and customer service staffs are friendly. It seems to be much colder than other supermarkets to keep food fresh. I'm really sensitive about temperature. I ended up going into the store to re-buy everything on my order. I also found items from my order that were marked as out of stock. Long story short I wasted more time trying to correct the mistakes, rebuying my groceries, and now I have to fight for a refund of my online order during normal business hours. read more

Stopped at the deli and ordered the spicy chicken sandwiches they had 3 signs up about. I waited 15 minutes. The man wrapping them said they had Mayo and pickles on them and to get the slaw from the deli lady got home, chicken has no spice, it was swimming in Mayo, the slaw is regular and when I cut it in half it's raw in the center. I always have been a fan of Safeway - so when we saw that there was when so close to our condo, I was pretty excited. The size of this Safeway, however, is kind of deceiving. From the facade of the shopping center, it appears to be an anchor of sorts to the buildings, boasting a pharmacy and of course, in-store Starbucks - however, once inside, it feels kind of cramped and cluttered in certain aisles - especially on the right side of the store. Somehow, it's always busy here - even at times you'd imagine it wouldn't be...and though I have a Safeway card, the deals are so-so, especially when compared to area choices, like Shoppers or Giant - you'd think that'd welcome more competition, but I haven't quite experienced that! One thing I definitely have to give them (as in the chain, mostly) props for though - they have made great efforts to provide more healthy-for-you options, and they place them alongside the standard staples - like, for example, non-dairy ice cream - was ecstatic to see so much offered here! And they now carry coconut water - that's awesome. read more

I usually go out of my way to shop at Wegmans, and today's experience at Safeway reminded me why. I needed two items and was near this store, so I stopped in. The lines for the registers were so long they went down the aisles. I ended up leaving and going to Rite Aid. It probably took me more time in the long run, but if Safeway doesn't care enough to have enough staff to serve their customers, they aren't getting my money. I would normally not write a review for a grocery store, but I have to tell this story. My friend & I wanted to get a cupcake cake for our friend's birthday dinner. The bakery closed at 3 on Saturday & we arrived at 1pm to pick up a cake that we hadn't yet ordered. We saw what we wanted in the display, but it was a smaller cake, with only 7 cupcakes. We need one with about 20. The baker seemed a bit confused when we asked her want we wanted, but once she got it, she created the prettiest flower cupcake cake!!!! :) Everyone at the party was raving about it! This Safeway is the best one I know in the area. I drive about 15 minutes to get here, just because it's better than the two close to home. Their produce is a lot better than the other ones. It's also a bigger store so they tend to have more variety and more of what I need. My only issue sometimes is they don't have what I need, they sell out of the good stuff! She made a very nice sandwich for me and without any question from mine she tried to give me better price because I hadn't any kind of meat or chicken. The price is somewhat high when the items are not on sale, but I'm giving this place an extra star for the Just 4 You iPhone app and I think this is one of the better places to use coupons. This is a convenient location for a grocery store and Safeway has great prices and sales on various items sometimes. With that said, this location consistently has expired items across the entire store. It's almost gross. From deli mean to condiments to non refrigerated drinks, to chips and so much more. I have occasionally stopped here over the last year for convenience sake and each time I get home and the food is expired. The consistency over such a long period of time suggests this is not isolated and this location has awful quality control. OMG Bleeeeeech!!! So me and my daughter hit up Starbucks in rhe Safeway because I've been craving an Iced Skim Pumpkin Latte, and I'm not quite sure what the hell they made me but let me assure you if this is Starbucks version of a pumpkin latte then they should be thanking the good Lord they only serve it for a couple months. Whatever this craptastic drink I currently have in my possession is, I am positive it's a far cry from what my tastebuds wanted and expected. First negative is the espresso tastes old and burnt and it's a very pronounced flavor that is anything but pleasant and leaves an awful after taste in your mouth that even Altoids can't cure. I don't taste any kind of pumpkin spice there is some kind of processed sugar syrup I can taste in the latte but pumpkin, it is not. On a positive note my daughter got an Iced salted caramel mocha and it was very good. But herein lies the difference between my drink and her drink I I realized after mine was made that the barista actually made my daughters drink and the cashier put my drink together. That is the only excuse I can come up with in my mind as to how my daughter got a good drink and I just spent over $5 on iced toxic sewage mixed with skim milk. Le sigh...I guess in the future I will stick with Panera's pumpkin spice latte, at least I make it myself and will have no one to blame but me if it tastes like 2 day old burnt pumpkin patch ASS!!!!!! The lines were super long at Safeway and they only had 2 registers open and after the whole Starbucks debacle I said screw it we're getting delivery tonight!!! read more

I had high hopes for this grocery store because it anchors the Towne Center and looks very impressive from the outside, but almost every time I go in, I'm disappointed. Yesterday (Monday), for example, I went in around 4:30pm and needed to get a bite to eat before shopping. The soup station was filthy, with soup splatters, dirty handles, and missing utensils. The salad bar looked anything but fresh. Many of the items had stuff mixed in from other bowls, and it was just dirty. If they don't have the manpower to clean and refresh these soup and salad bar stations, they should just remove them or take them down after the lunch hour. I ended up getting a bagel and cream cheese from the bakery, which actually ended up being pretty tasty, but a plastic knife to spread the cheese was nowhere to be found. I also ordered a combo meal from the deli, including two fish patties, and the lady did not offer any sauce for the fish, which ended up being really dry. When I asked, she did look in the back, saying they used to have some, but she didn't find any. When checking out, if you forget your rewards card and have not yet done the tedious process to register your card online, then the system can't recognize you, so you won't get any discounts. If you go down the street to Giant, they have an option for "forgot your card," allowing you to still get the discount without your card or phone number, on the honor system. Safeway's credit card machines are old, so if you slide too early, you will usually have to slide again 30 seconds later, after you have stuffed that card back down in your wallet. I appreciate the lady in the pharmacy who always notifies me if there is a problem with my insurance, but what bothers me about the pharmacy is that they have the ability to check you out for other items besides meds, but they refuse because they are "too busy." Even if I have two things - like a greeting card and a candy bar- they do not offer to just scan the extra items to save you another tedious trip to the checkout aisle. Finally, after a subpar shopping experience and loading groceries into the car, I remember that there are NO cart returns in the parking lot. Yay, I have to hike all the way back to the front of the store to drop my cart off (because I like to do the right thing). Now to be fair, I don't believe the Giant down the hill has any cart returns either, but this is simply annoying. The one thing I like about this Safeway store is their Starbucks. There are a couple of very friendly baristas. When I purchased the exact drink from them that I did from the corporate Starbucks down the hill, this Safeway Starbucks tasted better. All in all, I will be going to Giant and likely switching my pharmacy unless some very big changes occur at this Safeway; if they don't start taking these reviews seriously, I shutter to think what will happen when the Wegman's goes in. read more

We did drive up service for our groceries, so my husband could get home sooner to help me with our newborn, and all of the spots were filled by regular customers. He called the number over and over to have them come out with the groceries. After 10-15 minutes of calling, he finally went inside. Nobody apologized to him and he took the groceries out to the car and loaded them himself. We definitely won't be using this service again or going back to this location. read more

I have had nothing but a pleasant shopping experience at this Safeway and have not had some of the problems encountered by the Yelp reviewers who have left a negative critique, so I give it a three-star rating. Still, there are issues for me regarding pricing and the usage of the Safeway Club Card. Overall, Safeway's pricing, regardless of whatever is on sale or not, is overpriced when compared to similar products purchased from Shoppers Food Warehouse, Giant, and Harris Teeter. And contrary to what surveys of grocery store pricing for the region may say, Safeway's, based on what I have seen and purchased, are the highest in the Washington, DC area. In order to get the most out of the "Just for U" offerings in the weekly ad, I have to either cut out the requisite coupons or go to the Safeway website and have the coupons I plan on using "electronically uploaded" to my Safeway Club Card account. Wouldn't it be easier to just upload all of the sale/savings items for everyone who possesses a Safeway Club Card? It sure would save a lot of time by avoiding the use of scissors with the paper ad and point-click time on the Safeway website. read more

During peak times they could use more cashiers - Absolutely! I've never seen a grocery store that didn't have that problem though. Great selection for most things. Good beer and cheese options. Variety of meats. friendly butcher staff. Well organized, well lit, clean, and yeah - the healthy options are great. They have a ton of those. They also have some of the same staff for years, which to me, is an indication that they are doing something right - treating their people well enough to keep them and all. read more
