One of the perks was fam tours where businesses would invite tour coordinators to experience their business with hopes of us recommending them. This first hand experience was instrumental in "selling" the business as coordinators encountered the business firsthand. We could provide concrete details to convince and persuade the tourists to patronize them. One of the businesses was Tanaka of Tokyo (TT), which boasts teppanyaki, a type of Japanese cuisine that cooks on a flat griddle. TT started in 1978 in Waikiki Shopping Plaza, an impressive run of 48 years and still going strong. They currently have 3 locations: West (Ala Moana), Central (Waikiki Shopping Plaza) and East (Outrigger Waikiki Paradise Hotel). They previously had locations at King's Village and Ilikai Hotel Yacht Harbor Tower. The main attraction of TT is having the chef cook in front of you. Food is cooked in front of you and served fresh. Entertainment is an additional attraction with teppanyaki. Out of town guests can really enjoy this unique experience. We celebrated a friend's birthday recently where TT East was the selected venue. They are located just next to Hookipa Terrace with nearby neighbors of California Pizza Kitchen and Jade Dynasty. Reservations were made in advance and our group of eight sat in a semi circle surrounding the grill. They have multiple courses to choose from where surf and turf is popular but I opted for the salmon course, which included green salad, miso soup, appetizer of grilled shrimp, sautéed veggies (onions, bell peppers and bean sprouts), Japanese pickles, rice and dessert. For a surcharge I got the garlic fried rice as I remembered this not only being entertaining but delicious. Our grill chef was Joe, a long time veteran of over 20 years where he also trains the new chefs of TT. He clearly engaged with us by also adding jokes in between. My salmon was executed well with a nice exterior crust, the meat was moist and seasoned perfectly. The only thing that didn't make the mark was the garlic fried rice. I recall it being more flavorful with also crispy garlic here and there for a more pungent taste. It wasn't what I previously remembered from multiple visits to TT. Service was also great. We were followed up periodically with staff removing excess plates, providing water and hot tea refills and even providing take out boxes to some of my friends who couldn't finish their meal. Staff were thoughtful in singing "Happy Birthday"and placed a candle in the ice cream that accompanied the course meal. Overall, a memorable dinner with friends celebrating a joyous evening. Lots of parking in Ala Moana Center but be careful as there are some areas where tickets are issued. Be sure to look for signs prior to walking away from your stall.

She was super polite, sweet, efficient, and attentive! Our chef, Joe, was amusing, fun, and informative! He's the trainer for the new chefs! The environment was on the dark side. We decided to sit at the bar instead of getting a table, and honestly, it was perfect. The place has a small, cozy izakaya feel with a really chill, laid-back vibe the kind of spot you can just sit back, order a bunch of things, and enjoy your night. We ordered the shrimp, shishamo, TKG with mentaiko + extra green onion, nikusui with egg, and the whole ahi with the bone served with nori and rice. the whole ahi with the bone is HUGE. We thought we were done after eating one side, only to realize after the waiter informed us there was a whole other side of meat still left! The TKG with mentaiko and extra green onion was also a favorite, simple but so satisfying. Title: Traditional Flavors and Invigorating Ambiance at Saab Thai Rating: 1/2 When it comes to traditional Thai cuisine, one cannot bypass Saab Thai. Nestled in the heart of the city, this restaurant offers an exquisite culinary experience that is sure to delight your palate. As you step into the restaurant, the Thai-themed decor immediately transports you to the land of smiles. The tasteful blend of contemporary and traditional Thai elements creates an atmosphere that is both inviting and relaxing. The ambient lighting and the soft, lilting music in the background add to the overall charm and instantly set the right tone for an enjoyable meal. The menu is an impressive collection of Thai classics, and although I could not sample the entire range, the dishes I did try left a lasting impression. Saab Thai's fried chicken was simply sublime. The meat was succulent and tender, and the exterior was perfectly crispy without being overly greasy. The subtlety of the spices allowed the natural flavor of the chicken to shine through, and the accompanying dipping sauce added a delightful tangy kick. The stir fry, too, was a testament to Saab Thai's prowess in the kitchen. The vegetables were fresh, and the sauce was a marvelous blend of sweet, salty, and spicy flavors. It was served piping hot, and the vibrant colors of the vegetables made it as pleasing to the eye as it was to the palette. The spring rolls were yet another highlight of the meal. They were crispy on the outside, and the filling was a tasty medley of finely chopped vegetables. The accompanying sweet chili sauce provided the perfect balance of sweet and spicy and was a wonderful complement to the crunchy spring rolls. The service at Saab Thai was efficient and attentive without being intrusive. The staff were friendly and well-versed with the menu, and they were more than happy to make recommendations based on personal preferences, which is always a plus. In conclusion, Saab Thai is an excellent choice for anyone looking to enjoy authentic Thai cuisine in a serene and stylish setting. The food is delicious, the ambiance is delightful, and the service is commendable. I look forward to returning to try more of their offerings. All in all, Saab Thai offers a culinary journey that is well worth embarking on. He read more

I've had two really bad experiences with Saab Thai's online ordering system. Both times, the online order didn't go through, forcing me to wait or call in to ensure my order was ready. And both times, they were out of mango sticky rice. This last time, they even substituted three orders of sticky rice with jasmine rice, the staff mislead me claiming that at least one order was sticky rice because they ran out, which was false. To make matters worse, I witnessed smoking during food preparation, which is a serious health code violation. I'm extremely disappointed and concerned about the lack of quality control and hygiene standards. I definitely will not be ordering from here again! read more

In the last three? years, my friend Maris, who lives in Hawaii Kai, has invited me to join her and her other drunkard friends in going to Maile's for Happy Hour. And by hour, I mean hours. The bar at Maile's has maybe 10 seats, and while we have never had problems getting seated at the bar, it seems all the seats are occupied most of the time. Is that a temporal anomaly or a paradox? I still have not seen Maile in the flesh but from recent references made by other guys and her photo on the menu, it seems she is still a hot chick !! Maybe one of these days I will experience that vista. Anyway, the French fries are still really good, and the beef pad siew is as good as at any other Thai restaurant around town. Check it out !!

My friend and I ordered the pad Thai with tofu, ginger chicken, chicken satay, and pork larb. The pad Thai was the best dish, but it was very tomatoey, which I did not expect. The chicken with ginger had very little chicken. It was mostly julienned vegetables, including celery which I do not care for. The chicken satay was kinda dry and most certainly needed the peanut sauce to make it palatable. The larb was very dry with very bland flavor, served on one lettuce leaf and a wedge of cabbage. How am I supposed to eat that? All of it was quite disappointing, especially for the price point. As I was eating this meal I remembered the Thai food truck at the end of Ward, where Fisherman's Pier used to be. Now THAT was some good Thai food.
