Ambiance was cool and I was starving so my focus was on the menu. The menu had many dishes to choose from that were all reasonably priced. Decided to go with the standard and we ordered a shrimp pad thai, veggie drunken noodles, spring rolls and crab rolls. No drinks on a school night. Food came out quickly but with the entree's, the waitress talked over pur food as she didn't know who ordered what and brought it to another table. Not cool. The apps were mega greasy so I wouldn't order those again but the noodle dishes were good. They're heavy with the spices so be careful. I came here because well... I was trying to find cheap eats. My mistake was not knowing how much I normally eat which is quite a bit...so cheap eats is a relative term when it comes to me. However, this place wasn't that far from Thai Son which I am a fan of so either way it was a WIN-WIN. Small place that can seat around 20 people. When I came in it was empty during lunch because I obviously came in for the lunch special. The place is clean for the most part but I didn't give it a complete glance over. The waitress didn't understand English as well as I thought she would have but orders were made correctly and she was both cordial/friendly. Attentive too but then again I was the only patron left after the other guy that was here before me exited during my meal. B on their Health Code is iffy for me but it sure as hell beats C on a lot of the Chinese food places in NYC that I roll the dice on occasion. I ordered the Chicken Pad Thai and Noodles w/ Chicken which should have been just chicken noodle soup in the first place. The reason for the confusing lingo is there are choices of meat that can go with ANY of their lunch specials including chicken, beef, shrimp, and pork with different prices on each. The Chicken Pad Thai was delicious and up to par with what I expect. Good nutty, sweet flavor. Noodles well seasoned and made. The portions however is SMALLER than I expect but I guess that could be because it was a lunch special. The Noodles w/ Chicken which I ordered with rice noodles was delicious as well. Noodles well made, the broth was well seasoned and the chicken tenders well cooked. The portions was decent as well. It wasn't the biggest bowl but it sure wasn't small. The Thai Dumplings which came with the lunch special was very tasty. I might just order these as appetizers as well next time around. The vegetable soup tasted good BUT it tasted exactly like water mixed with a packet of instant noodle flavoring. Come to think of it, I bet that is exactly what it was. The vegetables were fresh but I had hoped for homemade veggie soup. PRICING - Their lunch specials is essentially $1-$2 off their regular priced items if you were to order them after lunch hours. Their happy hour which I don't even think it's listed isn't really "happy" except maybe for the wine which was $5-7. Maybe they don't get many people coming here for happy hour. I picked up a delivery menu from Sabay the last time I ate at Thai Son. So this place has been on my radar to try especially because of all the seafood menu items. I went for lunch today. The first thing we ordered were two thai ice teas ($2 each). These were large glasses too! We ordered the mussels for an appetizer ($6.95). It was cooked with onions, bell peppers, lemongrass, and basil. Overall it was a good balance of flavors. I also had a small order of the Tom Yum Goong ($3.50). This little soup was packed with a spicy punch. My mouth was on fire but it was really tasty! I ordered from the lunch special menu which gives you the choice of soup, salad, or spring roll. I chose the salad. It was a small salad with iceberg lettuce, carrots, bean sprouts, cucumbers, and tomato, topped with a peanut dressing. My boyfriend had his favorite noodle dish, Rad Na with beef ($6.95). This dish was a bit too salty for our palates but the portion was generous. I guess we just prefer Nusara's. I ordered the lunch special of Basil Chicken ($6.95, with salad). It was delicious! We both had leftovers. The service is awesome besides the English barrier. The waiter and the hostess were pleasant and served us right away, always had our waters filled and the tabled cleared of empty dishes. Sabay Thai is further away from the chain of Thai restaurants located by the supermarkets at the Elmhurst Ave. subway stop. In order to get to Sabay, get off at Roosevelt Ave. and walk one block east. The ambiance is simple, even almost bare, yet modern. It is not a place for privacy or coziness as every table is situated next to each other. And everyone walking along Broadway, can look right in and watch you eat. Some patrons may enjoy this if they like to people watch while they eat. On our first visit here, we opted for some staple Thai dishes: Curry Puff ($4.95) - combo of chicken, potato, onion and yellow curry wrap. The curry puff was flaky, had a good curry flavor, and a nice soft potato-ness inside. It was served with a sweet vinegar sauce along with cucumber and red onion bits. Refreshing. Drunken Noodles ($7.50) - flat rice noodles with 5 Medium-Large sized shrimp, mixed vegetables (onions, red peppers, broccoli, baby corn, carrots, cabbage and a leafy green resembling bok choy) and basil. The noodles were fairly spicy and definitely not for the faint-hearted. Many casual spice lovers will be pleased. Crispy Pork with Chinese Broccoli ($8.50) - sauteed with garlic and mild sauce. The meat portion of the crispy pork was a little dry, though skin was nice and crispy. Oddly, the fat was somewhat intact though there was not a lot in between. Service was very good. The waitress came by constantly to refill our glasses of water. She always had a big smile on her face and was very friendly. However, Sabay Thai just didn't seem to do much for me. I had no complaints, except that portions were a bit small, but the food was fairly standard. Lad Nah was skimpy. There was so little broad rice noodles in the Lad Nah that I had to dig through the gravy to find it. The Lad Nah was served on a huge plate but there was about 3 cups of gravy and the noodles was smaller than my palm and the height was single layer of rice noodle. There was only a few bites of noodle...tiny bites at that. The beef was way overcooked too. It was not the worse but second worse is pretty bad. My boyfriend could not believe his eyes with the portion of the Lad Nah. I had to fish in the huge amount of gravy to find the noodles for him to prove it's a noodle dish! It looked like a soup to him! His Chicken Rama Platter was on a huge plate too but the chicken breast was way overcooked again. He had a hard time swallowing the meat. After we finished, he mumbled about how he's never going back there again. I concur. This is an excellent authentic Thai place. It is located in a quiet part of Elmhurst near the 74th Street station. The decor is very simple but it is clean and looks very modern. Prices are very affordable as well. Most of the rice and noodle entrees are around $7.00. I have tried the massaman curry and also the panang curry here. Decent Thai-- I've been to asia myself and it's just decent. The Pad Thai is better than the Drunken Noodles. Both were unlike what I have usually had at other quick Thai places. Drunken Noodles was more like a stir-fry. Had some broad noodles that were essentially "too" broad and more or less like chunks of rice noodles instead of being long and well, for lack of better word, noodley. Chicken is usually pretty dry and they drenched the Drunken Noodles with pepper flakes. Salad is a bit too cloying given that it's neutral-flavored iceberg lettuce and bean sprouts. Pad Thai is sweet and comes with loads of veg and chicken. I asked for more chinese broccoli. Food is more or less "white-washed" for either the hospital employees or lack of Thai people that live here. The service is good and friendly. They are helpful and the rates are cheap and affordable. The ambiance is nice, clean, and modern. Full bar in the back with Thai-Pop on the TV. I'd go just for a quick bite as it's right around the corner. read more

Like... they would take your order, bring the food, then bring the check... but the waitresses were surprisingly nice and tries hard to take care of you. They were pleasant and were smiling all the time and took care of our table. My water glass never made it past the half mark. Now for the food: CRAB ROLLS: they're deep fried and comes with sweet chilli sauce. It's fake crab meat. I would assume it was made form finely pulverized white flesh fish.They were flavorful... in their own artificial way. TOM YAM KUM: it wasn't as spicy as i expected it to be. There was a balance of the spiciness and flavor of the shrimp in the soup. Decent serving size and fairly priced. CHICKEN SATAY: it tasted liked grilled chicken on a skewer. Nothing more, nothing less. The peanut sauce was ok but not so special. PAD THAI: stay away from this. The noodles were soggy and kinda disgusting. There really wasn't any flavor on it. And the vegies on it were so dry and bland. Do NOT try Sabay Thai Restaurant restaurant from now on! The food quality plummeted significantly. It is not the original one you thought prior to the pandemic. We went today on Mar 5, 2022. We ordered 3 dishes: chicken skew appetizer, soft shell crab, and their most famous pad thai with fried tofu. Surprisingly, everything was terrible! The worst food we ever ordered! The chicken and crab smelled, hard, dry, and had no taste. The pad thai was not chewy and spongy like how they tasted like prior to the pandemic. The fried tofu was as hard as rocks, and the inside tasted sour and not fresh at all. We were the only customers at the restaurant around 12:30pm, which was supposed to be a high demand time. We visited this restaurant many times prior to the pandemic around noon, it was always crowded. We thought it was because of the pandemic. However, after tasting the food, we knew why it was so empty now. Because this restaurant is ruined, the food quality is plunged. We were pretty sure the previous chef left. Also, to cut the cost, they used very very old, stale meat and other ingredients. I told the lady that the tofu was so hard and stale. She took the plate to the back of the kitchen and came back in 5 min, saying that our chef said the tofu was fresh and since you ate most of the noodles, there was nothing we could do. What a crap! They were lying to the customers that they used fresh ingredients, though any human being could clearly taste that those chicken were frozen probably for years, that was why they were so hard to chew and I could barely swallow without sauce. We had stomach upset afterwards, plus such an unpleasant experience after our complaint. So please learn the lesson from us: Do NOT try Sabay Thai Restaurant restaurant any more. They put shame to the reputation they had established for years. We know all restaurants are struggling during the pandemic, but I feel so sad that they chose to downgrade their food quality as the strategy to get through this difficulty time, risking losing loyal customers like us. My sister called early this morning from Elmhurst hospital . My Mom wasn't feeling well so she had her admitted for checkup. I stayed with her until I realized its already almost 3:00 in the afternoon and didn't have anything to eat so I went out for a quick fix. Found this small cozy Thai restaurant down the block from the hospital called Sabay. Walked in and was greeted by 2 charmng young ladies who ushered me to my table. I ordered the Seafood Red Curry..A mixture of ..Shrimp, Scallops and Squids cooked with delicious Mixed Vegetables with Rice...Really delicious....The portions are huge and the prices....very affordable. They have specials too Mondays to Fridays from11 to3:00 at $5.95 and $6.95....So if you are in the neighborhood ...drop by.. and give them a try.. Went back to the hospital and stayed with my Mom until closing time 8:00 pm. she'll be released tomorrow....her checkup results are all fine..Thank God!!! read more

My gf has been trying to convince me that NY isn't all bad. So she brought me here for lunch. I must say that going in with negative expectations makes it very easy to be pleasantly surprised. We went with the lunch special. I went with the red curry with chicken and the woman went with the tom yum soup with noodles. We also split an order of calamari. The red curry was pretty good. The chicken wasn't overcooked and there was a decent amount of vegetables. The tom yum was a good blend of sour and spicy and the rice noodles definitely helped take some of the edge off. Our lunch specials came with a salad which was pretty puny. It looked like one or two leaves of lettuce and a slice of tomato with a peanut sauce on top. The calamari had an interesting batter on it, which did not overpower the squid itself. I would recommend ordering it. We finished off the meal with some mango and sticky coconut rice. The mango was ripe and we saw it cut in front of us. The portion size on it was pretty decent. Service was pretty good. The location itself is pretty small. Also, parking is a pain in this area. My overall thoughts on this restaurant are that if it weren't for the lunch specials, this Thai restaurant would be like any other place and I wouldn't give it a second look. I've had a few dishes here that were just okay, but I am totally hooked on their pad kee mao (drunken noodles), the fried basil is like candy. The standard variation comes with shrimp, which is good, but they have this way of frying tofu that makes it almost crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, like a beignet (New Orleans donut). Don't get me wrong, the flavor is good but it is not edible without some noodle with it or rice if you prefer. For $8.00 appx, this dish is not Worth it. The eggplant with chicken was your average thai flavor but very salty! It wasn't that spicy but it was HELLA salty. The bowl of rice that came with it wasn't enough to go with the dish. But thanks goodness for the thai ice tea. It's very different, in a good way. Their thai ice tea isn't too sweet (which is how I prefer it) and for $2, it was worth it. The fried bean curd, almost forgettable except for the first bite when it comes out pipping out. Crunchy outside, soft tofu inside, although plain tasting by itself, luckily it was served with a peanut plum sauce. After a while of sitting on the table, the tofu kind of lost flavor among the rest of the entres. Will I come back? No, I've been to the thai on carmine street in manhattan and jaya in brooklyn that served better thai than this place. However, can't really complain much about the price. The AC is not working... hot , mad and hungry.....orders delivery ( order pad thai shrimp and 2 pad ka-prow minced pork with sunny side up egg ; fish sauce and chili on the side ) the food hits the spot and got a new room .
