Went to return a Sthil attachment to S&S Ace Hardware in Buford. The part was not what we needed but the salesman continued to procrastinate by trying to sell us other components but we just wanted to get a refund. We ordered the part on-line from a store in Pensacola FL and hoped any Ace/Sthil dealer would refund our purchase. After listening to his continuing sales pitch we again asked for a refund on the unused item in the original box and our receipt. He finally said "I'll have to ask my manager". He came back stating they would not take the item and it was "obsolete". We purchased the item 32 days ago! We called the store in Pensacola and were told there would be no issue in refunding the purchase. This is the true statement of "No customer service, service. This store in Buford has changed based on our years of shopping this location and this salesman was very Kurt.! Just plain rude!! read more

I ordered a part online, Black Friday. They had a 50% off coupon. When I went in to pick it up they had pulled the wrong part. When I picked out the right part, I was told they would cancel the original order and I could just pay for the right part at the check out counter. I asked about the 50% off that I used to originally purchase the part and was told "Sorry we can't use a coupon twice". I called and visited MANY different hardware stores for help in fixing the chain on my Greenworks chainsaw and no one was willing or able to help me. S & S Ace Hardware was very helpful and gladly took a look at the chainsaw for me. They helped guide me to the correct chain, replaced the chain and even cleaned it up for me. I had a very specific problem to solve with our gas grill and I was SO stressed out after going to Home Depot and Lowe's (where I was flat out ignored) . So then I went to S&S Ace Hardware and was immediately greeted by at least 3 people when I entered the store. EVERY person that works there offered to help and took the time to even provide a translator to help my friend Juan find the correct parts to fix the grill. I cannot express how much of a relief it was to have this personalized customer service -- especially in contrast to my terrible experience at the other stores. I generally like Ace Hardware because their staff is typically friendly and helpful and I can get in and out quickly. So when my Honda generator wasn't making power, I was glad to find that the nearby S&S Ace Hardware in Buford would service them. I performed some basic checks - air filter clean, oil clean and full, and spark plug wasn't fouled. Unsurprising since the generator has less than 10 running hours. I was too busy to dig further so I decided to drop it off. On my way out the door, I paid a $50 deposit. A text came a few days later saying that the generator was ready to be picked up, When I arrived, it surprised me that the bill was over $200. It turns out that water was in the carb and the S&S service department claimed the carb needed replacement. The first red flag was on my way to the counter to pay, I noticed the receipt claimed only a $30 deposit had been made. Honest mistake? I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. However this demonstrates sloppiness and a lack of communication. The cashier did fix the mistake when I brought the error to their attention. If I hadn't caught the mistake, would they have notified me? Since they were sloppy with the amount of the deposit, what else did they miss? I went to the back to pick it up, at this time the generator was started. Ok, it runs, but it also ran when I brought it in. The problem was the generator wasn't making power. So it wasn't clear what starting and idling with no load was supposed to show. At this point I made sure they gave me the old carb. I get the old carb home and start digging in. Immediately a bunch of fuel mixed with water dumped onto my workbench. So it was clear they hadn't performed a single check on the old carb to see if it actually needed to be replaced. The effort to do so would have been minimal. It would have have been a quick check to remove the bolt, drain the small amount of fuel in the carb, wipe the bowl out to remove any loose debris, and test with fresh fuel. The owner's manual even describes the process to drain the fuel from the carb, a very simple process. No more extra effort would have been needed on their part. I returned to their service counter to ask why they didn't bother testing and the carb appeared to be ok. The service guy took the old carb to the back to take drain bolt out. It took him less than 30 seconds to return. Besides some superficial surface corrosion at the bottom of the bowl, the float and and carb jets showed no discoloration, blockage, or damage. When I asked the service guy about why the original carb wasn't checked, his response was that the labor cost would have been doubled. Excuse me? He had just demonstrated how quickly the carb could have been drained and checked. I was tempted to ask if this was how he serviced his own equipment, but I didn't feel like reasoning with the guy any further. Lessons learned? Double check your deposit amount before paying the bill if you have any service work performed there. Don't expect them to do right for you and actually troubleshoot without wanting to excessively jack up the cost. And, if you take a Honda EU 2200i generator camping, be sure to bring it inside your tent/camper if their is any chance of rain. Apparently the fuel cap is not waterproof - one more thing they missed in their explanation of the problem. Why two stars instead of one? I'm assuming S&S Ace Hardware actually tested the generator under load and the original problem is fixed. If it turns out that the problem remains, I'll take the time myself to understand what's going on rather than dealing with this particular Ace Hardware again. read more

priced a part for my toro mower a few months ago went back to order the part and it had went up 400 dollars, I honestly thought the gentleman was joking and when the shock wore off he was serious, I got the part number from him went home pulled up Home Depot's website and ordered the exact Toro part for 400 dollars cheaper and free delivery, ordered it on Monday it was in my driveway on Thursday of that same week. Ace said it would be a minimum of 2 weeks to get it. Ace is a big corporation like Home Depot, why such higher prices I don't understand, it definitely pays to shop around. read more

I had my Honda lawnmower 'repaired' in Sept 2023 to fix the deflector to allow mulching. The fix worked for 3 times before the lawn no longer needed to be cut for the winter. In late March 2024, I used the mower only to find the deflector was at the same state of disrepair as when I took it in. When I took the mower back in April 2024 to see how they would remedy the ineffective repair, I was told that they only warrant their work for 60 days. Does not seem like their confidence is very strong regarding repairs. They wanted a $140 preapproval from me to take a look at the mower to see if they could repair what I'd already paid $80.39 last year. On top of that, they could do a service on the mower starting at $111.00. Extrapolating the faulty repair experience with the 'starting at' price, my guess is that the service would wind up costing over $200.00. When I hesitated, they said that I should just buy a new mower. So, If you are not a commercial business, they don't seem to want to back up their work and don't really want individual's business. Horrible customer service and repair quality that you would expect out of a Junior High/Middle School shop class. read more

Had a mower repaired for bad gas so tje said. Very standoffish. Anyways..had the mower 7 days before it crapped again. They said we could do the same thing we did to it before. Which was flush carbeurator change filter and plug which didnt need. Charged me a deposit of 38 and a minimum befire theyd call to tell me how much they spent. Didnt even change gasket. Took it to Sosbee they said you never flush or rebuild. Cheaper to buy a new at 45? Ace....168$ and same problem Sosbee 116$ all new parts and runs like a champ Ace will never get my money again. Today Ace had a chance to create a raving fan and they did. I had a gifted item that I had never opened and wasn't sure of its original purchase location. I went to a local retailer that I frequently shopped for "Green Egg Items" and they quickly turned me away with no receipt even though I had purchased many items in their store. I remembered Ace also carried this Green Egg Brand of items and so I stopped in to see if they would consider allowing me to exchange it towards a different Green Egg Item purchase. The same offer I was trying with the previous retailer. Everyone I spoke with was eager to work with me and quickly got me to a store manager Jason (the manager) I believe to make the decision if they could take the exchange. He wanted to help and allowed me to swap it towards a different item. I understand all stores have policies and procedures, but sometimes in situations like this, you have to see the forest and not just the trees. Ace will get all my Green Egg purchases going forward. If I could give 0 stars I would...I purchased a $3,600.00 zero turn lawn mower from this location. When I bought the lawn mower I had upgraded the deck to a welded instead of the stamped and bought the mulching kit that was supposed to be installed. They told me that my lawnmower would be ready in 3 days... That they had to put on the new deck and mulching kit. When I returned the following day the only thing that was done was the welded deck. They told me that the mulching kit did not arrive as they were expecting and that it would take three weeks before the kit would arrive because it was now on back order. So they told me to go ahead and take my lawnmower home and when my mulching kit came in they would pick up my lawnmower and install the kit then return my lawnmower. Three weeks pass... Nothing! Four weeks pass... Nothing! Five weeks pass... Nothing, so I call to find out what is going on with my mulching kit. At this time I stay on the phone for approximately 10 minutes before they say let me check and I will call you right back. Three days pass so I call them back. I finally get someone to tell me that the kit is in and they will pick up my lawnmower on Thursday to be repaired at 10 AM and be returned later that day, stating the installation of the kit should take no more than an hour. By the end of the business day Thursday I haven't heard anything so I called the store. They told me the mulching kit just arrived and it would be put on first thing Friday morning and my lawnmower would be returned shortly after. Well you guessed it Friday came and went with no word, Saturday came and went with no word, and Sunday came and went with no word. Needless to say I'm getting pretty pissed! I call them first thing Monday morning and was told no one was in the repairs department yet... But as soon as they came in they would have them give me a call immediately! Requested a mower repair that only needed an oil change and tune-up. They ended up charging me $149 and the mower didn't even start when I went to pick it up. The same attendant that started it when I dropped it off could not start it and I could not start it in any choke position as I did before I brought it to them. Their misleading authorization form allows them to do what ever they want up to THEIR maximum that THEY set and make no offer to change the maximum. My maximum was $150 and no surprise it came to a $149 so they would not have to call me to authorize it. My mower was running fine before I brought it in and only needed a simple tune-up and the carburetor cleaned -- not replaced . And above all else they had a technician call me -- even though I asked to speak to the store manager -- and insulted me that he could start it.........Very standoffish. $70 in labor. Over 10 years ago I brought a mower to an Ace Hardware in Lawrenceville where again they made unauthorized repairs and over charged. DO NOT BRING YOUR MOWERS TO ANY ACE HARDWARE TO GET SERVICING!!!!! Walking into S&S, I was greeted warmly by several employees asking if I needed help, and then I spent a good deal of time with Jim back in the Stihl "mini-store" and he was simply fantastic. Answered my questions, patiently educated me, and then when I bought my saw, he prepped it and even took it outside and showed me basic operation. This is exactly what you want from a small dealer that competes against the big box chains. BEWARE!!! I like to start off by saying I had a whole different experience walking in this place alone then when I walked in with my beautiful girlfriend. I wanted to get my lawn mower fixed for my girlfriend, I walked in never greeted and no one asked me if I needed help. I go to the repair desk and ask how much it would cost and a number of other questions I wasn't familiar with,to make sure what I needed was fulfilled. This gentleman was quick to respond in a harsh and uninviting manner, he almost seemed agitated I was asking these questions, so I made it quick cause I noticed he wasn't helpful at all. My girlfriend was waiting outside and I told her what happened, so we went back in. As soon as we stepped in this place she was greeted. From the front door to the repair desk is about 50 feet, within that fifty feet two people had already asked her if she needed help, unlike when I went in alone, i had zero people ask me if I needed help. My girlfriend is very pretty and I understand she would get noticed but money is the the same color for everyone. Anyways we got to the back desk and another young gentlemen helped us, he was very nice polite and was very thorough with the information, unlike the older gentlemen I spoke before who rushed and made me feel like I was asking stupid questions. After that we decided not to get our lawnmower fixed by them, we were walking back out and another two guys asked her if she needed help... I felt discriminated against and I hate to say that cause I'm not that person to throw discrimination out so loosely but when I noticed a huge difference in customer service first hand then I get upset. This store advertised promotion on lawn mower tune up for $49, but by the time you pick up your lawn mower you are to pay $150 or more. First, they make you sign an agreement that forces you to give them $150 reauthorization to do anything they see fit to charge without your consent, and then charge $90 an hour labor separately that will easily tap your bill to well over $100 plus any parts. I ended up paying $170 for six year old lawn mower. So if you Dint want to pay up to 150 or more for your lawn mower, then don't fall for $49 tune up promotion. read more

Not certain I have ever been so disappointed with a business. I took a mower in that I no longer use, to have a "tune-up" done on it as I was giving it to a single mom. I was told the standard service would be 50, but there was always a possibility it could run more. I had to leave a $30 deposit in order that they would begin the service. The gentleman told me they weren't too busy and that it shouldn't take long. End of week no call so I went and purchased a new unit to donate. The following Tuesday I went to check in and was told usually takes a few weeks but it would be looked at soon. Their policy is if the service/repair exceeds $200 I would be contacted for approval. The very next day I received a text that my mower was ready. I went in today to pick it up and pay the bill. Would you believe it came out to be exactly $200?!? They said they had no reason to call me as there policy states it must exceed $200 to warrant a phone call. Imagine that...I chose to be a patron of this store rather than on of the "Super Stores" . I have lived in this area a little over a year when we bought our new home. I have made multiple trips to both here and the Home Depot which is only about a quarter-mile from their store. I will gladly pay a little bit more money to deal with the friendly and helpful employees at this Ace hardware . There is usually someone standing at the front door they will ask you what you're looking for and take you right to it instead of you having to find somebody in them point at an area 25 aisles away not caring whether you find what you're looking for or not. They will even take time to talk to you about the area and make recommendations on places to get good take out or delivery. I sure wish other people remembered what real customer service was all about. read more

** BUYER BEWARE ** Simple lock re-key for 4 locks. They messed up one of the locks! The new key would not come out of the cylinder. We took it back to them. The manager said it wasn't their problem. He then went down rabbit hole after rabbit hole explaining why it wasn't their problem: * He said that Schlage (the brand of lock) went bankrupt 6 years ago. I went on the Schage website, it shows ACE Hardware as one of their retailers. It sure seems like that they are in business. * The locks were worn out. No they weren't. In fact the lock they broke was from the back door deadbolt that is rarely used. * That there was bugs in the locks. REALLY. Have you ever opened up a lock cylinder? There isn't room for anything and if there was - so what? How does that affect that a key is stuck in a newly re-keyed cylinder? * That they aren't lock smiths. Then why are the selling locks, keys and re-keying locks. Again, what does it have to do with owning and fixing a simple mistake? They simply must have used the wrong pins in the lock and it jammed. Why wouldn't they just fix it? He would not provide any help other than saying he could give me a locksmith's phone number. I had been giving them my business instead of Home Depot for the past year, wanting to support local businesses. But folks won't own their mistakes and fix the problems. Buyer beware. I understand not being able to return a used item or generator. However they would not let me return batteries or a flash light? I did not take these items to be seasonal items. Took my riding mower in for repair twice over the years. The first time they did a great job and brought it back working. The second time I took it in (a year later) for the same issue, bad carburetor they pulled the old "we fixed a bunch of stuff you didn't ask for and it's $$$$$". This time it was $475.00! I was told eventhough I wanted the mower running, they replaced the blades, fuel filter, belts, battery and carburetor. Little did I know until some time later when the mower stopped cutting evenly (after three uses) that the original blades were still installed and the belts were bad not having been replaced after all. These guys are scumbags and I will NEVER use them again nor will I ever recommend them to anyone. Run! read more
