This is our second time here. Last time, we docked here after a very long plane ride and we were exhausted. The service at 10 pm was pleasant and the soup and braised gourd dish that we ordered filled our tummies in a good way. We were very impressed at how clean and fresh everything tasted. We had flown to HK last year and learned that fresh, lightly seasoned food was the Hong Kong way. Eating was an elevated art form in this small port city. S&E deserves high ratings for being true to its roots. The bathroom was also very clean. We're trying again on a Sunday. Hopefully, our good memories will be maintained. read more

Cantonese food that's open until 2 am! Came here with a few of my church friends after we went to Academy of Sciences Nightlife on Thursday. As an Asian restaurant, it was good and fairly clean. Their customer service is... a bit lacking. In one particular incidence, we waved over a waitress to take our order and instructed her to start at the other end of the table. She waved to us and walked away... maybe it was miscommunicated on our end? Or maybe I was just tired and a bit cranky. Anyways, I'll be back if I ever have the chance. read more

monday night munchies! relatively cheap, decent food. i shared the chicken steak [gai pah] with my friend, and it came with soup of the day [veggies in a chicken broth, unremarkable] and hot milk tea. the "tomato" sauce over the chicken was certainly HK tasting [ketchup-y] and it was over a large helping of rice. they took the time to bake the cheese on top of the dish, which i thought was nice. i would come back if i expect to hang out until 2 am on a weekday night because of their decent prices and o.k. food. knowing some cantonese helps to make things go smoother too, but not neccessary. read more

For this restaurant, each dinner dish included a fresh dinner roll, soup of the day mini bowl, choice of rice or spaghetti and coffee or tea or milktea. Our dinner was: * Grilled Pork Chops with House Sauce and White Rice $9.95 (4 of 5) The dish came with two boneless pork chops. They were good portion and very moist and juicy. It was a very tasty piece of pork steak. The house sauce was mediocre. I prefer pepper sauce with my pork chops, but the menu didn't list it, so I assumed they don't serve it. The side vegetables were an assortment of dark and leafy greens and heavily boiled in salt and garlic. It was pretty salty, but fine when I ate it with the rice. * Oven Baked Pork Chops with Tomato Sauce over Fettuccine $9.95 (3 of 5) The dish came out with a baked top. Be warned-hot plate. The pork chops were sliced and I found minced celery and onions in the tomato sauce. It was good, but nothing spectacular. I think my pan fried pork chops were better than the oven baked chops because they were not sliced and retained their meat juice and moisture. Onto the sides, I did enjoy their dinner roll (5 of 5). It was a really yummy dinner roll. Fluffy and lightly sweetened. LIke hawaiian buns, but not really. The daily soup was corn and egg flower soup (2 of 5). It was really watered down and really peppery. Not the highlight of the meal. Lastly, the meal included dessert. The choice was a cut of J-E-L-L-O or small bowl of red bean tapioca sweetened. We both choose the tapioca (2 of 5), but it was like the daily soup. The dessert was watered down. This café serves better quality meat, but has no daily specials. The price starts at $9.95 and goes up from there. It is nice and clean. So if you are up for paying $10+ for a Chinese café meal, this is the place to go. Came here on a Friday night around midnight with a group of about 35. Service was great and while food prices are slightly higher than average, everyone was given bread, soup, milk tea, and dessert regardless of orders. Portions are gracious and most dishes came out promptly. I really enjoyed the Ma's Special and could only finish half. Refills on water and milk tea were prompt and frequent without needing to be requested. I guess my fellowship frequents this place fairly regularly, so I heard we also got 15% off our bill. Down to come back and try other things! I should also note that they were more than willing to rearrange tables to accommodate bigger group seating. read more

The food is good and the menu selection is broad, considering that it's open until 2 a.m. in the morning. There aren't alot of places with good food at those hours unless you like eating at Denny's, Top Caf, the POS hawaiian cafe across the street that used to be Zim's , or...*shudders* Berkeley's infamous Sun Hong Kong (now defunct, good riddance). So far, things have been reasonably good. I was pleased that the curry chicken over rice had solid pieces of lean chicken in it (some of the other late-nite places have very fatty chicken). The three meat noodles was tasty, although the quality of the pork pieces wasn't that good. The yang chow fried rice was good...generous amounts of shrimp thrown in for good measure. Service isn't outstanding. Expect to be aggressive in asking for tea or extra napkins. Nobody actually came around to refill tea the whole time that my friend and I were eating there. I found it rude, but laughable, almost to the second that we finished our meal (at around 1:30 a.m.), the waitress almost instantaneously teleported over to our table to present us the bill, as if they couldn't get us out fast enough. It's not that cheap ($7-$9/plate) but I'd rather pay a little more to avoid getting garbage on the table. Besides, the location is convenient and they do take credit cards. read more

This place is great although I must admit I liked the old S&E more. I come here quite often and the service is nice. The waitresses are very friendly and can customize orders if you ask for it. The food is definitely a HK style but there is a bit of an "elegant" flare in the presentation of the food. It's the small things like the silverware they provide or the bit of garnish they have on the side. The food is more pricey than your typical HK place but I find the quality better here. I get the "baked chicken over rice" here and it's much tastier and probably cleaner than other places. The place can get pretty crowded though especially on the weekends. I think this is typical for all HK cafes in the city though. read more

This place is the spot now ever since its remodel and kitchen change. This HK style cafe has a nice ambiance, and is definately the most comfortable and clean, compared to the D&A, ABC, etc..... Staff is very chinesie, but very attentive and gets me whatever i ask right away. The food seems more creative then from over a year ago. I really like their baked items, chicken wings, rib-eye with mushroom sauce, and chicken wings. This is my top choice for Cafe within the area. Plus now they're open till 4am on fri/sat night. My parents and I come here about once a week for their delicious, quality food. They serve every meal with H.K. milk tea, dinner rolls, soup/salad, and dessert. I always get the H.K. style baked chicken spaghetti, which is amazingly delicious every time. It is super cheesy and the tomato sauce is delicious. The escargot is really good and served with an abundance of garlic. Some dishes are better than others with the baked dishes being the greater. I've had salmon over rice with mushroom cream sauce, which came out to be kind of bland. They have one of the best H.K. milk tea I've ever had and it is STRONG so be sure to not drink too much at night. Speaking of, they open past midnight so if you have the munchies, this is the place to go for good quality food. Their prices are fairly inexpensive and their portions are large.The staff is friendly and attentive. It is also very clean with a comfortable ambiance. They updated their menu and remodeled the restaurant not too long ago, so its nice that they strive for improvement. Popped in for the first time and was pleasantly surprised at how clean this place is, for a HK style cafe that is. I just ordered flat rice noodles with chicken and veggies and it's pretty tasty! I would have liked to see more veggies in it, there was just three pieces of Bok choy and three flimsy slices of carrots. It was pretty slow to get my order and there was only two other tables at the time. Prices are a little more than the typical HK place but if the taste and quality is there I'm happy to pay a little more. First learned about this place when I worked night shifts at a supermarket. Now, this one of my favorite Chinese cafes around San Francisco. Opened until 2AM, this is a favorite spot for late nights looking to grab a fourth meal or stop by after karaoke across the street. The baked plates here are a great deal for those of you looking for an appetizer, entree and dessert all around ten bucks. Almost all of the baked dishes comes with a bit of toasted coconut on top which caught me off guard the first time I came here, but it adds a nice sweetness. Another then that, I don't really care for it. The cleanliness of this restaurant is actually quite astounding compared to other Hong Kong cafe I've been to. The hardwood floor looks immaculate and no stains on the wall as they change decorations often. Only issue is their menu. The font on some of the categories could be more clear because it blends in with the background. read more

One of my favorite places to go. I come here about once a week or so. I always like to get steak or lamb chops =P but I enjoy the fact that I can also come here for some good chow fun. This is a busy section of town and should always be busy. Not! Depending on what you order, its lack of service and lack of meat on the food. I've been here many times and depending on the server, its kind of bad for the money you spend on per item that there's such bad service. One time the waiter gave my food to a different table and the customer never said it was the wrong food and ate my food. Its a seniors hang out because it serves a special discount meal. It was not busy and waiter never bother to check on me and ask where's my food. I have to ask where's my food. My tea was never fill as many time that I was here. Which is worse Ming Kee or here? The new S&E Cafe that is around now is nothing compared to the old one. With the old one they had a "happy hour" of sorts with tea sets of smaller portioned food that was perfect. Now there is a place that tries too hard to stay with the times trying to cater to both the Asian crowd and the American crowd. The food itself for the price is uninspiring to say the least. The place is clean but I would say you can go to any other place in the sunset to get something better. The only thing that this place has is that it's open late at night. Back to the food and it being bland. The portions seem to get smaller and smaller every time I come here, and their soups are just plain tasteless. The drinks seem like their big but they fill most of em with tons of ice just to make it look cool. The Singapore style noodles have no bite and they seem to even screw up the fried noodles also. If your desperate for a late night place to go and all your other options are gone I would still rather go across the street and get some pizza at Seniore's. read more

I LIke it! Been wanting to try this place out for awhile. Went for dinner tonight. Restaurant is clean inside which is a plus for a Chinese place. Menu was pretty comprehensive, lots of stuff to try out. Service was fast and food was tasty. Most Chinese restaurants on Taravel are better than this. Went here with my parents at noon on a weekday. What a bad experience. Ordered a rice dish. They were serving 99% elderly here, at $4 a plate for them. My parents got theirs in 2 minutes. I got mine in 30 minutes. Asked the waitress to check on my dish, and she responds from 20 feet away, "It's coming, it's coming." Waited a bit longer and told her I'd like the bill, cancel my order. She said it's already out. It only arrives 10 minutes after that. If you enjoy waiting forever, where everyone around you get their food before you (even the ones that are seated after you), and waitresses give you the run around, this place is for you. read more

This is just ok. I used to frequent here alot in early 2002. However the decor has changed, and so has the food. In some places, it's improved, like some of the dishes. However, the drink menu shrank, and the dinner combos aren't exactly all that appetizing. But if you gotta have some western inspired chinese food, this is pretty good. Locals come here, only because 100% Healthy Dessert is full, or they just kinda stumbled upon this place. Not exactly car friendly, parking is crazy to find. Sometimes you have to park 2 blocks away, but definitely better than say.... Clement St. in the Richmond. I will say that most of the appetizers, although strange, are tasty, and the remaining drinks they do have, are pretty good. It's always a treat to just come by and have some HK style milk tea. This place opens up late and its fancy-ish. I came here and ordered a baked pork chop with rice. It came out with two big pieces of meet and pre cut. To some of you cutting the meet is part of the eating process but I find that these precut pork chops were moist and juicy. It doesnt come in the silver tin plates in most of the other restaurants. Their service is nice and welcoming. I like this place a lot solely because it opens up late. I tends to be a bit more pricy than other asian restaurants around the area but i feel that this restaurant has the quality that backs up how much they are charging. For sure when I come here next time that I will be ordering their cherng fun. read more

They've definitely improved in their quality of food since a year ago. I think this is due to the fact that they have a new kitchen staff that is very creative with their menu. I like their Hong Kong style milk tea, chicken wings, escargots, and curry fish balls. Try their angus rib-eye steak with the mushrooms sauce...tastes great!! Or try their beef spaghetti with pesto sauce (not on menu)...this is what I usually get. Beware...their servings are huge!! The place is super clean for a Chinese restaurant...much more comfortable then ABC. They are also open till 2am every night and closed on Tuesdays. Meh... The food is okay. I ordered the pork chop over spaghetti with their ketchup sauce. I did know they would actually use ketchup. I thought it was what they called their red tomato sauce. I ordered the same dish during another visit and I remember it being 10 times better. Maybe they changed management... The service is horrible. My first time here and it was nice. The restaurant seemed very modern and i loved the interior design of the place. The only thing that sucks is parking. I ordered the Pork chop over cream sauce with a side of hotlinks inside. It was Delish! My Girlfriend ordered the Ham and somethingy majig, and it was alright. The food was not over cooked and they didnt come inside a metal plate like most HK style restaurant. The food was nice and flavorful and it did not disappoint. The bathroom was clean and had a very interesting square toilet that you must see. The HDTV in the restaurant was great for viewing when you run out of things to talk about. This is a great place to eat, right off one of the major roadways of San Francisco on 19th Avenue and Taraval. Though this place has been around for awhile, I can say they've come a long way. I still remember their place before they remodeled it to the way it currently looks. Besides opening late (I believe 2 AM), S & E Café foods' can definitely satisfy one's appetite quite well. In addition to being flavorful, their portions are more than average. Depending on how much you can eat, you can have some leftovers, though it may not be a complete meal; more so, a snack. What I also like is the presentation of the food. Very often I order the club sandwich. The way they cut and place their meats, lettuce, and everything good in between usually stay together after I take a bite. It's not sloppy at all. The service here is quite good. There's one particular waiter that seems very aware of customer needs (i.e., automatically refilling tea without being asked) and always smiling when taking down your order. Although this is a cash only place, there are plenty of ATMs around the neighborhood (and even one right next to this place). Seating capacity is slightly below average, but it is very presentable.
