Very disppointing experience with the dim sum takeout today. The shrimp in the har gow was chopped into tiny pieces instead of being whole, and the wrapper was loose and falling apart. The service was poor and felt very rushed. Their dim sum was heavy on starch and lacked enough filling. To make matters worse, they would only accept a maximum of five penny counts. I had ten pennies and they simply refused to accept them as they are not U. S currency. The staff were unfriendly and seemed more focused on pushing leftover items on the counter than providing good service to customers. Overall, both the food quality and service were disappointing. Avoid this place if you value honest service. The customer service was absolutely awful. Instead of taking "no" for an answer, the staff repeatedly pressured me to buy more food. Even after I clearly declined multiple times, they went ahead and stuffed extra pieces into my box anyway and charges me for them without my consent. That isn't upselling; it's a completely unacceptable way to treat customers. On top of that, I was shorted $2 in my change. It's not about the amount, it's about the principle. If a business can't be trusted to charge customers correctly or return the right change, that's a serious problem. Between the aggressive sales tactics, being charged for food I repeatedly said I didn't want, and being shortchanged, this was one of the worst customer service experiences I've had. I went to order the Jian Dui (sesame ball), and it was so hard I couldn't even bite into it. When we asked for a refund or an exchange, they refused and tried to convince us that this is how it's supposed to be which is BS. They even offered to microwave it, which was honestly more embarrassing for them than for us. I'm pretty sure those sesame balls were either old or overcooked to the point of being inedible. On top of all that, the customer service was rude and unfriendly. This is a great low-key spot when you're in the mood for solid, straightforward dim sum. No frills, just good food done right. The shrimp rice roll was a favorite--soft and silky with plump shrimp and just the right amount of sauce. The sticky rice was comforting and flavorful, filling without being heavy. A mixed bag. They've got the dim sum basics covered. Har gow, siu mai, bbq buns, etc. They're hit and misses tho. The dumplings aren't bad. The items with steamed dough, like the steamed BBQ pork buns are pretty dry, and the filling is minimal. I'd stick with the dumplings, like the shark fin dumplings. Obviously, they aren't actually filled with shark fin, but with vermicelli noodles instead, but I think they're pretty good. Har gow skins are on the thicker side. Setting is pretty much like your typical Chinatown-like dim sum take out spot. I noticed that another reviewer mentioned that there was some shenanigans going on with what they charge, or rather the change they give back. I also experienced something similar. Menu prices are posted on the board and the fun in ordering here is seeing the goods on display and pointing to what you like. The pork buns are warm and soft, with more bread than filling, but the dumplings are big and tasty.The almond cookies are the chewy kind not the crunchy kind, which I liked. Reminds me of Hong Kong style counter dim sum places, where you are paying for the food and no ambiance. There are a few Dim Sum takeout spots on this street, and while this place does not seem to have the lines of the other ones, the food here was still really good. Mong Kok seems to have upped their game from the past few times we've been. They now have clearer pricing on new screens. Many kinds of dim sum pricing is 4 for $4.60. Their xia jiao (har gow) used to be hit or miss - one time we purchased it, the filling had a lot of pork lard vs shrimp and you never used to know what you'd get - some visits exceptional, some visits terrible. This last time, every item we got seemed consistently above decent. The xia jiao, Lo Bo gao and you tiao were good. This place is one of the best takeout dim sum spots in the Sunset District. I ordered the chive dumplings, har gao, shiu mai, and turnip cake, and I absolutely loved every item! The total cost for all four items was only $23! 1. The chive dumplings were packed with fresh chives, shrimp, and seasonings. They were delightful! 2. The Har Gao had delicate skin that was tender and elastic, and the shrimp filling was plump, moist, and perfectly seasoned. 3. The Shiu Mai featured a thin, light wrapper that was firm and slightly chewy, with a well-seasoned mixture of ground pork and shrimp. 4. The turnip cake had a crisp, golden-brown exterior and a delicious blend of Chinese sausage, dried shrimp, and scallions. It was very well-seasoned and moist. This place is a true hidden gem, although it might not be a secret anymore with the long line! I noticed that the staff was more accommodating if you could speak Cantonese, which is common in dim sum shops. My only complaint is that they don't offer the go-to Chinese vinegar and chile oil sauce packet. The service here is decent, but it's primarily a grab-and-go spot. Previously known for just average quality Dim Sum, Mongkok has been stepping up their game with new and higher quality offerings, late especially since new competition appeared nearby that seems to get all the attention. Step up inside and order up from the ladies behind the counter. Totally casual and to the point once inside! We used to like this takeout joint for dim sum but over the years, the food has gone downhill. Unfortunately, Hubby is still stuck on the memories of years past when the dim sum was much better. He spent a bit of change coming home with dim sum that I found not edible. The fried taro balls were soggy and flavorless. The siu mai was the only item that tasted fresh. The fun gor, triangle shaped had stuffing in it that tasted sour, as in near spoiling and I threw it out after one . The har gow had flavor but the outer dough was too thick and chewy. His main purpose was to buy Chinese donuts and the usual dim sum place we go to was closed so he got them here. I've never liked the donuts here but today, it tasted OK or at least better than before. We come here 4-5 times a week since the kids school is only a few blocks away. I think we have tried pretty much everything they have there. Everything is good and the price is reasonable. If u order anything that is crispy, take a look before u order. It might not be crispy and U can tell just by looking at it. I see some reviewers are complaining they're being charged for bags and for the containers. I don't know what to tell you but nothing is free. There was also a reviewer saying that maybe the ladies there have been overcharging customers, I don't think so. If you're good with math then you'll know they're not. Stopped by this morning craving for some shrimp roll noodles (ha cherng fun) at 7am. Luckily, Mongkok Dim Sum opens at 7am and is close to my house. If only their noodle rolls are thin like the ones they serve in Hong Kong, than it would taste really fresh. I usually get their pork and shrimp dumplings (siu mai) and the fried glutinous rice dumplings (ham sui gok). Too bad they do not sell their black bean pork ribs over rice until 8:30am. That one is pretty good like restaurant quality. The star of the dimsum today is their fried glutinous rice dumpling. Extra crispy and tasty! So good! They usually get very busy throughout the day too. They are also more kind to you if you speak Cantonese (their native language) pretty much like any dim sum shop. The total for the three items is exactly $11 (cash only). They do not sell milk tea here so I went across the street to the donut times store to get a drink so I can have a complete breakfast set. I've been wondering why some of my old reviews were missing or removed. There were a few places that I know I've written a review in the past, but they were missing for some reason. I've been participating on the #YelpChallenge2020 as I was invited by the Houston CM a couple of months ago. Since we've been on lockdown, I might as well join in as I ain't goin' nowhere. My original review for this place was flagged and removed. This threw me for a loop as it got me recounting my reviews, which I had been meticulously tracking. I was discombobulated for a couple of days trying to figure out how my count was off. I don't lie when it comes to my reviews. I do a thorough research on several of them, and sometimes the process could take several hours from draft to finish. I write reviews base on my own personal experiences. I originally rated this place 2 stars and even wished them well. However, I'll just write a summary of my own personal experience this time around: Wednesday, August 12, 2020. I arrived looking for a quick bite to eat prior to my 9AM appointment at Kaiser in Daly City. It was approximately 0805 hours. The lady working the counter at that time was rude, condescending and impatient. I was appalled on how unprofessional she was. She even neglected to provide me with utensils, napkins and a packet of soy sauce. When I asked for these, she gave a sigh and shoved them in the plastic bag and handed them to me in a disrespectful manner. Rude is an understatement. I didn't enjoy my order due to the experience and I do not plan on returning here again. Dim sum is acceptable, prices are reasonable. Dough of shrimp dumpling is bit thick unless you 're craving for it otherwise can pass. Shiu Mai and porridge are good. Service is really shortfall. One of the ladies has no courtesy and often has attitude toward customers just be aware, oftentimes, they try to sell you the left over if you attempt make any purchase before closing. I've had my fair share of awful Dim sum express joints, but this was (luckily) not one of those. There was a constant stream of people when I was there, and I think most of the "menu" (just paper posted on the walls) were in Chinese, so it might be helpful to already know what you want or bring a Chinese speaker here. We got a ton of food, and I think I actually liked everything we got: Har gao: Classic har gao with a classic har gao taste. The skin could be a bit thinner but it wasn't a big deal. However, I would like to note that most of their dumplings with this type of skin were rather on the thicker side. Siu mai: They're pretty heft siu mai, enough for them to put an entire shrimp on the top as a little topping/hat. This tasted delicious and the meat was very soft and juicy inside. Lo mai gai (sticky rice): I actually enjoyed this more than I thought; I usually think they're just "whatever", but the flavor on this was incredibly delicious and the filling was very juicy and soft for the most part. Some of the chicken was on the drier end, but it didn't affect the texture too much. These are also pretty giant portions. Cheung fun: We got the shrimp (classic), beef (also classic), and dried shrimp/onions. I didn't know the dried shrimp/onion one could be so delicious until I actually had this. Now it made sense why almost everyone was ordering this type of cheung fun. It was very flavorful, soft, and pleasant to eat, though I'd probably ask for extra sauce. Definitely go for the dried shrimp/onion if you want cheung fun; you will not be disappointed. The only thing is that the outside is a tad bit greasy as they do it so that the cheung fun don't stick to each other, so it's probably standard with all other dim sum places. Porridge with pork and century egg (pei dan sau yuk jook): Classic taste; mild in flavor but just enough to keep you eating...especially if you pair it with a crullers/"yau teew" (sorry, really butchering the Cantonese here). Ma lai gou: I was actually REALLY surprised with this one. It was super soft and fluffy, and the flavor was mildly sweet in a very pleasant "not too heavy" kind of way. This is probably one of my favorite dishes from everything I got here. Overall, this is a very solid joint for grabbing some quick dim sum to go. I do think it's easier to have a Chinese speaker around, and it's rather cramped inside so expect the customers to be pushing into you trying to make their way out the door. Also don't expect friendly service; they are just efficient, no frills, "no small talk" kinda folk. read more
