El Loco Panda - Birria, Chicken, and Steak Tacos

El Loco Panda

Let me start by saying: I love a great taco. Hell, I love an average taco. It might be my favorite…read morefood. I have had tacos from almost every corner of Norteamerica. The man who creates the tacos at El Loco Panda does so with love, and you can tell - Love for his culture, Love for the community. When I was waiting for my order to be wrapped up, a disciple sitting in the waiting area piped up and said, "The food here is good." If I know Detroiters (cuz I am one), we're not quick to compliment. Like Mexico, there is great diversity in what we consider to be a "taco." You have ground beef, Al pastor, chicken, sea bass, mahi mahi, vegan. You can top it with everything from queso Fresca to a refined julienne radish slaw. IDGAF! As long as it's fresh and well done, I'm here for it! My favorite here? The birria by far. The consommé served on the side is quite delicious and unexpectedly elegant, like a rose from the concrete. I feel like Loco Panda and its' chef reflects the essence of the east side of Detroit. Lemme 'splain: The tacos are hearty. They are heavy with meat and (gasp) yellow cheese sauce. So hearty, he had to double up on tortillas! He further bucks tradition and goes against the grain stylistically (soooo Detroit) and tops with red onion instead of white! Where they do that at?! Whereas you usually need to eat 3-4 street tacos from the festival trucks or Southwest to get full, you'll be full off of 1-2 of these, trust. Think like the good "real" Mac n cheese that we eat versus Kraft . Think "dressing" versus "stuffing." I think what I am trying to say is, ..... these tacos have soul. I don't even think about the fact that it's housed adjacent to a gas station. That doesn't matter to me. So long as the kitchen is clean (and it is), I'm good wit it. As a matter of fact, I take away that the food mattered more to this owner than the zip code it was cooked in (shout to subpar, high rent Bakersfield on Woodward). This is real food cooked from the heart. And quite frankly, it doesn't get any better than that.

Saw this place on TikTok and decided to try it out! Very surprised that a gas station joint is…read morethrowing out food this fire. The birria pizza for $16 hit it out of the park. The consommé was phenomenal and the meat was so tender. Service was great and food was made to order quickly. Would definitely recommend and will be coming here again!

I picked up my first Because Bacon order today. I expected a yummy treat or two, I did not expect…read moreto be blown out my kitchen door. I started with the brown sugar bacon, as I am making a breakfast casserole for Christmas morning and thought it would be perfect in it. I am sure it would have been perfect except for the fact I could NOT stop eating it as I cooked it up. It cooked up brilliantly - crispy and meaty, and came out of the pan the same size it went in. Since I had eaten a fair amount of it I decided to also cook up the bourbon bacon. Every bit as tasty. I have never had bacon like this before. But wait - there's more! I also bought two gift baskets as gifts for other people with bacon flavors such as thai and garlic and sushi (yep - sushi). But part of the basket I bought for Christmas for our family was a tin of snickerdoodles made with Apple Cinnamon bacon. I don't think I have ever had a better cookie. So, if you like bacon, you simply have to give Because Bacon a chance to WOW you. We are going to be sending gifts and enjoying it for years to come - I just know it!

I don't remember how I learned about this business, but I'm glad I did…read more My boyfriend and I are huge fans of bacon so I decided to get him some artisan bacon for Valentine's Day (I know, romantic, right?). I picked out a five flavor 1/2 lb sampler of Caramel Bourbon, Smoky Bear, Honey Chipotle, Garlic and Sriracha, and Maple and Brown Sugar. Let me tell you, it was the worst present ever because I kept eating it as I was cooking it for him! Each flavor was unique and tasted exactly like the name. It was all fresh and delicious. I could actually smell the bourbon when I opened the Caramel Bourbon package. The house smelled wonderful after each preparation. There are only two things that could be improved here. One was we got some rather fatty portions of bacon. I try to avoid eating fat, but my boyfriend said the fat absorbed a lot of the flavoring which he found delicious. For me that meant my dog got 50% of my bacon slices... not cool! The second thing is that they need to invest in packaging. Presentation is a huge part of the culinary experience. While bacon tends to speak for itself in a lot of situations I was taken aback by their super basic packaging. I suggest a quick trip to FedEx Kinkos to get some stickers printed up with their logo, slap one on the package and problem solved. As far as the business side is concerned there was a quick turn around from order to product delivery and the proprietor was friendly, responsive and flexible with delivery. All in all, I will be ordering from her again.

The interior is nice when you see the Japanese decorations but then you walk in and look to the right and see the Buddha statues and depending on the holiday it can be decked out in decorations (but a lot of places are like this so whatever, I'm here for the food). I was seated by a sweet lady and attended to well which I would've given this review at least 2 stars but the food couldn't justify it. I ordered the tempura udon and the dragon roll. I almost always order these two things because I love my udon and my eel. The tempura udon came out first and the tempura shrimp was placed inside. I don't like that because it gets soggy but it didn't really make a difference because the batter was caked on. I took a bite and I was terribly disappointed. How is it even possible to mess up tempura shrimp? You roll/dip it lightly in batter and deep fry it. But they somehow messed it up. The soup was gross and the noodles... my god, horrendous. I didn't want to waste food so I ate half of it before I had to put down my chopsticks and spoon. I hate wasting food! But it was just bad that I couldn't eat anymore of it. At this point, I was hoping my roll would clean my palate. It did not. If anything it made me so sad just looking at it. The roll was was about the same size as a maki roll and the shrimp and eel that topped it looked rubbery. It tasted that way too. I have never had such disappointing eel. The roll wasn't good. I finished my roll (it was small enough that I just downed it with water), got up, paid, and tipped (even if the food wasn't good, she was sweet). I wouldn't recommend coming here.
