The restaurant is located on the right side of huge Santo Tomas wine shop. Covelli has a nice little indoor dining area (very romantic) and a huge covered outdoor dining area. The entire place was decorated with hearts and flowers because of V-Day which made the experience even more fun! Our server was super nice and spoke english, but we told him to speak spanish to us so we can practice more and he was very sweet about it. He sat us at a cute and romantic wine barrel table with high chairs, decorated with a rose and he even brought out a candle and lit it for us. The menu is simple, 3 pages, mostly pizzas. On the back page of the menu are the drinks and appetizers. We ordered a glass of sangrias each and a cheese plate. The sangria is more like tinto de verano (which is red wine with lemon juice) and the cheese plate is queso fresco, olives and a bunch of oven baked toast with a garlic butter spread. it also comes with shredded cheese and a sour green sauce and a spicy red sauce. Our bill came out to about $10 with the current exchange rate! The service was excellent, food and drinks were delicious, we had such a wonderful experience here!

The food was delicious, especially the patatas bravas, which were flavorful and perfectly cooked. I also tried both types of sangria, and they were delicious....refreshing, well-balanced, and definitely worth ordering again! Overall, it was a fantastic meal from start to finish. However, when I reached my hand out, he hesitated. I told him we don't live together (speaking of my son who was sitting next to me) and he started to hand it to me, but then pulled it back. He informed me it's in case we come back... funny, our topic of conversation that day was how hard it was for women growing up in my era and working their way up the ladder... how times have changed. It's rare to meet a business owner so genuinely personable and connected to her guests. It was accompanied with a tender lettuce and heirloom tomato salad with saffron dressing. The leftover dressing for the salad was the most amazing vinegar dip for a couple tater tots when I got home. When taking our order, he stayed in the middle of the bar while opening a wine bottle instead of coming over, so we could hear him. When my date asked him to come closer, he seemed visibly annoyed. The focus of this restaurant is on Birria, both beef and lamb. There isn't a variety of other Mexican dishes here such as enchiladas, burritos or seafood. There is instead a plethora of ways to eat the Birria including tacos, quesa-birria, and stew bowls only in beef or lamb. No chicken or vegetarian options available. I ordered the lamb Birria, which came in a standard sized bowl. The portions were modest, and the ratio from broth to chunks of meat was reasonable. While this place was highly rated, I found my meal to be average in both size and taste. When it comes to this delicious dish, I am a bit of a connoisseur, and I've had birria in different parts of Mexico, including Mexicali, Guadalajara, Ensenada and outside of Mexico- restaurants throughout Los Angeles and all the way up to northern California. This was not the best tasting birria I have experience up-to-date but it also was not disappointing. The flavors were standard and fair yet not memorable. I would recommend this establishment. Tip: my usual order at these places is the stew in a bowl with a side of corn tortillas. For those with larger appetites, I would suggest ordering the same thing, but consider adding one-to-two quesa-Birrias to reach satisfaction. I would return here but also leave my options open to try the competition.
