I tried Rye Goods for the first time this past week and had a good first impression of the place overall. Parking is super plentiful as the bakery feels relatively secluded but both the outside and inside feel very spacious and calm because of it. There were plenty of tables and chairs inside making for what seemed like a very good study spot. The staff here were very nice and helpful in explaining all the different items, after which we ended up ordering a cream filled donut, a chocolate honey almond meringue croissant, a chocololate ganache coffee croissant, a brie and caramelized onion savory croissant, a morning bun and an oat porridge loaf. Overall the pastries were all pretty good, with my favorite being the cream filled donut (their most popular item) which tasted liked a brioche donut with strawberry cream inside. The pastries were mostly on the savory side (even the chocolate ones) and were definitely not overly sweet - these could easily be had as breakfast without feeling a sugar rush. I love this place, there's a huge open space right next to the actual bakery where you can lounge, work, study, whatever. First time I went I tried the iced specialty latte with cardamom, it was delicious! Second time I came I had the morning bun. It was end of day so it was a little bit stale but the flavors were nice. I'm looking forward to trying more of the food soon. The shared space is relaxing but I will say that both times I've come the employees of Rye Goods were a little loud and not the most professional. It wouldn't have even stood out if it wasn't for how peaceful and quiet the rest of the place is. But I'll definitely be back for more. read more

I am so happy that this location opened a few months ago! I am gluten intolerant and this is the only sourdough bread that does not upset my stomach so it is worth every penny. They use the highest quality ingredients and my stomach can absolutely tell. For people like me that has a sensitive stomach, it's such a treat to be able to eat a sourdough based croissant. Not every pastry or dessert is safe for me, but their sourdough loafs and plain croissant are! NOT so Goods Rye! Caraway seeds are what give rye bread it's distinct smell and flavor. There were no caraway seeds in the loaf of rye I purchased for $12.50, which is almost 2x what they charge for it at my regular go to bakery. I was in Santa Ana visiting a friend and searched Bakeries nearby and found Rye Goods, so I gave them a try. Wish I hadn't wasted the time and money, can't get either back. Think about this for a second... no prices are posted on the product shelves when you choose. They post the prices on a narrow vertical sign on the wall behind you so that you'll see them only after you're face to face with someone asking you for an amount of money that is twice what you'd expect and to save your pride you simply agree to swipe your credit card. The Brioche loaf I bought was $14 and I have to tell you it is the driest loaf of freshly made bread I've ever had. My first impression was that the bread might not have been made that day because when you pick them up and squeeze the loaves they are hard... all of them. So, I asked "this is made today?" and got an answer in the affirmative. Brioche is supposed to be buttery and lightly sweet even, right? Nope, this loaf is whole wheat sourdough. It is so bad actually, nobody in my family will eat it and I'm tempted to throw it out. They have some strange obsession with whole wheat and sourdough at the cost of deliciousness, actually. Literally everything is sourdough; the pastries and loaves and everything. The country sourdough was $12.50 and if you like an extra hard and thick crust, you could say it's really good. But who needs it if it costs $12.50? The pastry I like the best was the morning bun, but beware that they put a hint of herbs in all their pastries. We bought 4 pastries and we tasted sage and rosemary. The pastries cost around $8 each. That's right, that means if you want a dozen croissants it'll cost you ~$100! But my wife wouldn't even eat the croissant it was so unappetizing. Go to Pandor where they know what they are doing and you don't become a part of some crappy vegan sourdough obsessed experiment. read more

I was so excited for this place to open! I couldn't wait to have a local, indie organic bakery to frequent. I am always willing to pay a bit more for organic and to support a small business, but the prices here are ridiculous for okay-ish baked goods. My first visit was opening day. I stood eagerly in the long line, dreaming of a fresh loaf of delicious rye bread. When I got inside I was surprised to find no prices or descriptions displayed. And...Rye Goods does not sell a traditional rye bread. I selected a few items and almost passed out when they told me my total at the register. Here's what $44.24 will buy you: Sourdough boule -- bland, no tangy sourdough flavor, very dense with no tender little air pockets. Seems like a dough development issue. By comparison, the locally baked bread at Trader Joe's is vastly superior in both flavor and texture, for a fraction of the cost. Pumpkin scone -- was savory rather than sweet which was unexpected but okay. The main issue was it was very dry. Caramelized onion/squash croissant -- Tasty but also dry. Much better when I warmed it in the microwave. Baguette sandwich with brie, cucumber, & mint -- excellent combination of flavors on the inside but the bread was so hard I could barely eat it. After getting an abrasion on my mouth trying to take a bite, I wound up picking it apart. I believe the unbiteable sandwich was around $13, the scone and croissant were around $7 each, which would put the loaf of bread in the neighborhood of $17!! Still, I was so enamored with the idea of this little bakery and its lovely, spacious seating area that I decided to give them another try. I invited a friend to meet there for coffee. Total for a small coffee & a croissant: $12.88. If the quality was great, it would be worth the splurge, but again the pastries were so very dry. We asked if they could be warmed and were told no, they don't have a microwave because warming would interfere with the integrity of the product. I mean, if that's the astonishingly arrogant hill they choose to die on... it's a bold stance considering the "Dry Goods" source of wordplay is actually a more accurate name. read more

Rye Goods is deliciously confusing. The pastries are hand-made, artisanal delicacies that are uniquely crafted from 100% organic, locally sourced ingredients. When you look closely at one of the flaky croissants, you will see the freshly milled whole grains of flour. This place is the definition of rustic. There are no shortcuts, no pre-packaged jams, no bleached white flour, not a single mass produced ingredient on site. Everything is au naturale and naturally fermented. However.... I did purchase 3 pastries that came out to $23.52 which is $7.84 per item. As delicious as they were, it was definitely a bit of a sticker shock. I don't think it's super clear to people that the quality of ingredients is unmatched and it's not emphasized in store that everything is biodynamic and ethically sourced. I love the product that they've created and how they approach food production but at these prices, it is hard to make this a daily staple. But then again, a Starbucks caramel macchiato costs about $6 for mass produced flavored syrup with GMO'ed milk so if people can buy one of those everyday, maybe an artisanal pastry is not that far out of reach. read more

Excellent service, delicious pastries and bagels. The pastries are more hearty / less delicate than what you might find at other bakeries. I liked their sourdough croissant because it wasn't buttery and sweet. But if you prefer a crunchy, crispy, buttery, sweet croissant, this may not be for you. Their Country Sourdough bread is OK. I went in the morning on a weekday and the place was very quiet with nice aesthetic music and there were enough tables/seats to take. The indoor seating area is also spacious. Also there is plenty of parking! The server was very friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable. To be honest, I am so glad that south OC has an aesthetic, artisanal bakery like this and that I don't have to travel all the way to LA or Newport for the experience and food. Yes, it's expensive but that's what you get when you want delicious, quality baked goods. The staff is always 10/10 amazing and pretty much everything is delicious. This location is also dog friendly which you can't really beat. Only knocking a star off because I didn't love my coffee and the lack of some sort of toaster oven to warm pastries up/toast the bagels is a bummer. Absolutely delish! Line was a little long on a Saturday morning but food came out quickly. The chive cream cheese was a stand out, the herb flavor had a nice citrusy hint. If I'm spending $6-7 for a pastry I expect fresh, moist and well made. We got stale, dry and mediocre. Legit the lemon loaf from Starbucks that's prepackaged and mass produced was superior. It might have been the driest piece of cake I've ever had and the almond extract in it was overwhelming with barely any hints of lemon. Stopped in here for the first time today. All I can say is WOW. We tried 2 pastries - the kringle and the dijon pretzel - and both were beyond words outstanding. I ordered a seasonal maple rosemary latte, and my daughter ordered a vanilla oatmilk latte; both were very good. It's a little pricey but well worth the indulgence. BEWARE OF THE SERVICE CHARGE They add a 12% service charge to every transaction. You don't have a choice and they say "it's a tip for the employees" Well they should be paying their employees more at the prices they charge for their pastries. It's not the customer's responsibility nor should be an expectation to be paying an additional charge when they're buying a croissant. I have cut back the amount I purchase from Rye Goods due these additional charges. Other than their silly service charge, they're the best baked goods and food items you can't get in Orange County. The egg Sammie bagel was top notch, the apple krinkle pastry good but not spectacular. The coffee Cappuccino with oat milk was average, no raw sugar available for a topper, just simple syrup liquid. The eating area was roomy and a good place to have kids in tow but the price tag of 5.39 for an Oli pop soda is literarily 100 percent more than Whole Foods....are we paying the rent? There is a difference between paying for quality, which I'm totally okay with, and getting ripped off. Unfortunately Rye Goods is the latter. I was mind-blown when we went the first time and paid $25 for two coffees and two pastries. $25 is clearly not in line with other quality cafes in the area, but I thought the pastries here were slightly better so we decided to go back a handful of times. However we went again today, also got two coffees and two pastries, and the total came up to be $29. And they still had the guts to ask for a tip through the little iPad thingy. Worst of all, we ordered the coffee cake before, and it was pretty good. But I can confidently say that the coffee cake we received today was yesterday's coffee cake, if not older. 100% sure of that, it just tasted dry and didn't look as fresh/moist. You should also know that coffees here are tiny. I couldn't say this for sure, but the latte I got today seemed even smaller than the already small latte I had ordered before. Shrinkflation, I suppose. So there you go. Almost 30 bucks for two tiny coffees, one old and dry pastry, and one okay pastry. If the prices were more reasonable, I'd give it 3 stars. At this level of prices, it's 2 stars at best, mainly because parking is easy and there is a lot of room to sit down, work remotely, etc. read more
