A friend of mine has been coming to Mattern's for lunch every Saturday afternoon for years. I decided to tag along and try a sandwich. Mattern's is an authentic German deli in east Orange. When you walk in, there is a small dining room on the left with three two seat tables and one four seat table. There are coolers along with wall with a good selection of German beers and other beverages. On the other side of the dining room is a small marketplace with a few aisles of imported goods you probably won't find in most places. The long display case in front has a wide selection of meats, cheeses, and house-made sausages and sides. There is also a cooler in the market section with their house-made sausages pre-packaged and ready to-go. We arrived on a Saturday afternoon during a short lull, so there was no wait. Normally, you take a number and wait to be helped. Among other things, they are known for their Reuben sandwich ($13.99), so that's what I ordered. I'm glad I didn't order a side, because the sandwich was huge. The rye bread is toasted lightly and is stuffed with delicious corned beef, melted Swiss cheese, and the freshest sauerkraut I think I've ever had. I ate the first half and I was pretty stuffed. I thought about taking the second half home, but I ended up gobbling the other half down as well. The sandwich also comes with two slices of dill pickle. Service was friendly, and the sandwiches came out in a timely manner. When we left, there was a line out the door, so it is definitely popular. I'll have to join my friend again to try one of the sausage sandwiches and a side.

If you blink, you will pass this place and regret not stopping in for some food or even just a sandwich for lunch old-fashioned deli great customer service seating indoors and it's a must try

I'm on a sandwich kick and today I visited Mattern. Its been forever since I've been here, but nothing has changed. It was slow so I didn't have to take a number. When it's busy be sure to grab a number when you enter. My sandwich was delicious along with the pickle slices. My favorite thing is their Bratwurst. Some restaurants serve them and you can get them on German Street at the Orange Street Fair. You can get a variety of meats and cheeses, and several items from the market. They also have several German beers. You get fast and friendly service. They have plenty of parking. This is the best German deli in Orange County.

A great sandwich plus they sell a huge variety of German sausages and German grocery items which you can only find here . The sandwich was great, I will definitely be back for more . The service is friendly and the place is a throwback deli which these days are not easily found anymore. Worth a visit !

Back at Mattern's with my two sons -- nothing beats the best rolls in Orange County! We shared the Bologna on Swiss, Smoked Pork Chop, Ham & Muenster, and still have 4 more to try (Rueben and Poor Boy up next!). A perfect break from the daily grind. Huge thanks to Maria and the joyful, welcoming team. Love this place!

Mattern Sausage and Deli deserves Yelp 5 star, because: they have 5 star service and food to offer. They are very welcoming. It was my first time, i was walking to store and i was amazed with their great hospitality. You feel you are at home. The lady who helped me was very friendly even the customers. There was a man sitting inside and was eating the Rueben sandwich...He told me go and try it and you are not going to regret it and he was right!!!!!!!! Rueben style with Pastramiiiiiii...he also offered get cold beer which made our day even more relax and chilled! There is a small store that its partially deli woth seat to dine in and small place with shelves that its filled with german products! I checked even their Nutella is labeled as Made in Germany so this place has my heart and definitely i'll back and ill order it from here...I ended up to buy their quality bread and horseradish sauce so i did hit jack pot. I ended up to pay $47.17 total but im happy. The sandwich was $15.49, the beer $5.99, bread $2.42 and horseradish sauce radish was $4.99. Also they have a private parking lot!

Imported pumpernickel bread

Selection is the best part of this market. Rye bread sausages both fresh and frozen. Service is always fast and friendly. Ambiance is what I would expect from such a small business. Easy parking. Clean no frills but I don't go there for the ambiance. Amazing soft local pretzels.

I ordered a pastrami. The bread (roll) was incredible: crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside. I will be back soon!

One of the interesting features that have is that they carry exotic proteins such as alligators, rabbit, or rattlesnake in their links; but if you're more of a vanilla eater, than you're probably opt for the beef, pork or chicken flavored. Either way, make sure you pair it with any of their 10+ beers on tap and you'll for sure enjoy every moment of that bite. I ordered their cheddar bratwurst topped with pickled jalapenos and carmelized onions in a pretzel bun. The wurst was kind of the dry side but beer always helps. I do think sometimes that they over cook it which drys out all the delicious fat out of the links but I am here for drinks and a good time. Great spot to hang out for any type of gathering.

Kevin the manager couldn't care less that we were here as customers not for the monster truck thing so they didn't give us a table and we had to sit at the bar. He initially said that there was a 30 min wait even though we could see empty tales. We had already paid so we had to stay to get the $30 discount on your bill when spending $30. He was not willing to refund since they were not technically the ones charging you. Once we sat at the bar, the bartender was nice and made us feel comfortable so we could enjoy our night. The place was crowded with families with kids, adults just overindulging and being very loud. The moment the event started time got closer, all of this crowd started leaving which allowed us to really enjoy our night. The food was great as always. The poke nachos are really tasty with a good balance of fish and nachos. The fish and chips is one of our go to dishes they are always perfectly cooked. We have noticed that shrinkflation has happened throughout the years, but after enjoying a few beers you don't notice anymore. This was the first time trying their burger and it was amazing! The patty was perfectly cooked and the flavors just worked together. We also decided to give the beeramisu a second try and we enjoyed it. It is a creative and unique twist to your traditional tiramisu. Since it had been a while, we didn't even know that they have a club now. We gladly join and got the poke nachos as a welcome gift. Overall the experience started on a bad note but we left happy after good food, service and drinks. Also, Kevin came by after the mess to check on us and apologize for the inconvenience. Make sure you check the angel stadium for event before you come, they will be busy.

The food is delicious and I love the cozy feel and detailed theme of the entire restaurant. I arrived before my friend and asked if we could be seated in the dining room. Carrie hesitated and tried to talk me into the bar area. She said the dining room is usually for large parties. That is NOT true. I've been there with just my husband many times, as well as a small group (4). ALWAYS in the dining room, not the bar. She reluctantly seated me in the dining room and there were 2 booths that had only 2 people!!j Throughout our dinner, she commented "You guys are still here?!" "You guys have been here forever!" It was NOT busy or full and not near closing time. There were no "large parties". After I left for a few minutes, my friend told me that Carrie commented AGAIN about how long we were there (we had appetizers, dinner, dessert and tea!) And said it was slow that night but if it was busy as it normally is, she "would have had to kick us out"!!!! And she "just wanted us to know that". Also, the people who were already there when I got seated were "still there" the whole time we were!! I wonder if she said anything to them?? This was my friend's first visit to The Olde Ship. She loved the food and ambiance but said the service ruined it for her.

I came in with friends and ordered a pitcher along with several shots. The server, a young white male, brought the shots and only one cup of beer. I immediately told him I had ordered a pitcher, but he insisted I never said that -- even though I had already been charged. To avoid arguing, I told him to just bring a pitcher and charge me again respectfully. He refused and told me I would have to go back and wait in line if I wanted one. When I asked to speak with a manager, he said the manager was unavailable. We later noticed him walking around the patio taking pitcher requests from other customers and bringing them directly to their tables without sending them back in line. We politely asked again, and he said "okay," but repeatedly ignored us, walking past our table multiple times. When my friend followed up, he suddenly claimed he couldn't serve us and again told us to get back in line. There was no clear reason for the difference in treatment. Watching others get served while we were repeatedly refused, despite being respectful customers, made the situation feel discriminatory. As Latino customers in a predominantly Latino community, the behavior came across as biased and unacceptable. It's extremely disappointing because I've supported this place for nearly a decade and had never experienced anything like this before. Unfortunately, this interaction completely changed my view of this establishment. I would not recommend coming here if respectful and fair service matters to you.
