Such a cute café--I really appreciate the freshly made sourdough! I don't live super close, but I still find myself coming by at least once a week. I almost always order the avocado toast, and the avocado-to-bread ratio is spot on (which a lot of places surprisingly get wrong!). I also love their matcha latte--the matcha tastes high quality, and I really appreciate that their almond milk is free of gums and oils. I wish I could give this place 5 stars, but I have to knock one off for inconsistent customer service. I've met some genuinely kind and friendly staff, but almost every visit I also encounter someone who comes across as rude or unwelcoming. I also had a confusing experience recently when I ordered my usual iced matcha with maple syrup and was told they couldn't make drinks with maple syrup. I'm not sure if that was a misunderstanding, but it caught me off guard since it's something I've ordered there before. I'll probably ask again next time. read more

A cute place for coffee and pastries in Laguna by the beach. I love their drinks and their coffee here is top quality. Tried their seasonal caramelized date cortado and it was incredible!! Food and pastries are average given the price. Some I've tried are not bad but usually lean dry. The coffee cake was a bit dry but not too sweet which I liked. I've had their pretzel which is not bad but a bit dry - would be amazing if dipped in a cheese or mustard sauce. This is a cute little bakery with a few tables inside and plenty of outdoor seating, and a front and back entrance. I came across it as I was walking in the area in 2024, and have been here a handful of times since then. It used to be pretty good. I remember ordering the morning bun just because it is one of my favorite items. The morning bun- $6 is 2.5 stars. It is a little bit salty, and it tastes a little stale when it should be a sweeter pastry. It is lacking the crunch like other places I have had it. This time around, I also got their GINGERBREAD MAN COOKIE $7- 4 stars. It was a big, buttery, moist cookie, and the taste of molasses shined through. I was really looking forward to the apple turnover $7- 1 star, but it was the saddest of the bunch. It was very greasy on the outside and the layers fell apart. However, the inside was very dry and salty. The line is long and there is a bit of a wait, but the cashiers are nice. After paying $19 for three pastries, I really hoped they would taste decent. I had to throw the apple turnover away unfortunately because it was not edible. The quality of pastries has gone down. Not sure if they changed bakers or what the case is. I will be honest, I did not know this was in Laguna Beach. We were out walking our dog and stumbled across it in one of the prettier courtyards off of Forest Avenue. There seems to be an entrance on both sides of the building, but we entered from Forest and kind of weave our way past some of the people who are waiting for their food and beverage. Service was friendly and helpful. It was my first time here and we were honestly just getting an iced vanilla latte. The food and bread and bakery items look delicious so we'll definitely come back and try that. Kind of a clean aesthetic, very simple. Laguna Beach, CA Imitation is the best form of flattery. The strawberry jam thumbprint cookie is unique and one I just have not perfected to duplicate at home. Even though it's not a big cookie, it is quite rich and paired with a cup of tea, it is quite delightful to share and enjoy. This is not a typical thumbprint cookie, it's made with butter and a unique blend of flour and brown sugar to make it darker in color than your normal thumbprint cookie. The texture is soft and chewy but hefty and it almost melts in your mouth. I would put this at the top of my list as one of my favorite bakery cookies. The seeded bagel with house green scallion cream cheese is great as well, I forget to ask them to only slice it in half, versus in quarters. I haven't loved everything I've tried here although these seem to be my favorites so far. Service here is very pleasant the staff gets to know you. read more

This cafe is so hidden it feels like a reward once you've found it. Walking in, you're greeted by a heavenly aroma of fresh pastries. On a late Sunday afternoon, I was surprised to see the display case still stocked, we were in luck! The order: seasonal blueberry almond snail ($8), chocolate ganache coffee croissant ($7), and the berry refresher ($5.5). What intrigued me most was their sourdough croissant! A combination so new to me I had to try!! I'd recommend enjoying your pastries toasted it brings out the flavors more. The seasonal snail was a twisted sourdough croissant with blueberry and almond paste. Even with the sweetness of fruit and paste, the tanginess of sourdough comes through. The texture is denser, breadlike, and not as buttery as a regular croissant. 4/5 Chocolate coffee croissant was good but nothing crazy it's filled with lots of chocolate, though I couldn't detect much coffee flavor (maybe hidden by all the chocolate). 4/5 Berry Refresher, a blueberry mint hibiscus tea. This review is more specifically for their "holiday" items. We purchased a whole apple pie and when we served it for thanksgiving it was basically non edible. They left the skin on the apples and it made every bite hard and the texture almost felt like there was plastic in the pie. It was really hard to swallow. We ended up throwing it all away because nobody could eat it. For the $50 price tag I expected the apples to be peeled. Updated 1.5 years later.... Tried it again for breakfast. You guys, the food is terrible. We got the sourdough pancakes and they were the least flavorful pancakes I've ever had, dunking them in syrup didn't even help. I also ordered the breakfast burrito which was decent, but instead of a hot sauce they give you a weird bbq sauce/ ketchup mixture. When we asked for an actual hot sauce (which they do have) they charged us 50 cents. Not a big deal, it's just the principle. Please give proper hot sauce. I will not ever try this place again, everything looks appealing but the flavor is so awful. I cannot understand how they have stayed in business. read more

A small little breakfast/bakery spot in the busy streets of Laguna. They have indoor and outdoor seating and are a very dog friendly business! The staff are friendly and helpful. However, they do not heat up their pastries because they are baked fresh in the morning. I still would have appreciated my food warmed up if I am dining in. Indoor seating is pretty small, more tailored towards parties of 1 and 2. - sundried tomato bagel sandwich: 6.5/10. The bagel is filled and pretty tasty because of the sundried tomato aioli, but it costed $17!!! which is pretty crazy to me for a very basic and simple bagel. - whipped butter biscuit: 9.2/10. THIS. This was so delicious. I usually don't like biscuits but this was crispy on the outside and soft and fluffy on the inside. It was moist inside unlike most biscuits. The whipped butter and seasonal jam filling complemented each other and the biscuit so perfectly. I would come back just for this! - chocolate coffee croissant: 6/10. I was most excited about this, but this was a let down :(. The textures and flavors were lacking. Barely any chocolate or coffee flavor and the croissant was not crispy, more on the chewy side. Iced matcha latte with a squirt of vanilla (the extra flavor was a silent $1 upcharge, no forewarning) was the color of light sage green...probably the worst (AND most expensive!) matcha drink I've ever had. Coffee cake was also super crumbly and not memorable. Only redeeming factors are the Rye scrambled eggs main dish (I think the eggs or bread were dipped with duck fat? So delish!) and the friendly service. I can see how the indoor space could be really warm on a hot day. Taking this off my bookmarks list. Highly unlikely to return! PHENOMENAL breakfast and the best experience! Everyone working at Rye Goods was so kind, I got recommended one of the muffins and was so impressed by how good it was. I ordered a simple breakfast with a side of scrambled eggs and a side of toast, and the portion size was huge! I worked outside in the courtyard and the girls were kind enough to bring my food outside once it was ready. There was some construction going on but it was still super peaceful outside. Set up off the shop is a bit odd because you have to walk past everyone in line to get to the back of the line but there's also people passing by to pick up their orders. Wow- last Friday morning I had one of the best hot lattes I've ever had. It was a cool summer morning so I chose an oat milk latte with their house made honey cinnamon syrup. The latte was very pretty to look at, and the flavor was on point. Sometimes, she sweetness of syrups can overpower a latte, but this one was very balanced. When I finished the first, I even considered getting a second one! The bakery selection and their breakfast offerings both looked delicious. I was really looking forward to visiting Rye Goods in Laguna Beach with my mom for a nice coffee and pastry morning, but the experience was disappointing from the moment we walked in. There was an unpleasant smell inside, and we noticed small flies sitting on some of the pastries in the display case, which was not a great first impression. Still, we decided to give it a chance. We ordered an almond croissant and a coffee chocolate swirl croissant. The moment I touched them, I could tell they were stale. One bite confirmed it: dry, flavorless, and far from fresh. When we quietly and politely mentioned it to the staff, the girl seemed annoyed but offered a refund which I appreciated, saying they bake enough pastries for two days. A few minutes later, a tall man came over and repeatedly insisted that the pastries are baked fresh each morning and that they use a special wheat that makes them denser. I completely understand that and I have had pastries from bakeries all over the world, but there is a clear difference between something that is dense and something that is simply stale. After calmly explaining this several times, he continued insisting they were fresh, which came across as dismissive and defensive. I really did not appreciate the attitude or the unwillingness to acknowledge our experience. I would never have written this review if it were just about the pastries, because that can happen, but the rudeness and lack of care from the staff made the visit truly disappointing. read more

This is a pass. The location in Tustin as far superior in every aspect. For starters, the customer service is way more genuine in Tustin than this location. After trying to find an entrance to the location, because the sign that was, I was pointing to an entrance that was blocked by construction, I let the employee know inside that they should probably have another sign pointing to the other entrance, and the lady immediately said "we have a sign" in the snarkiest, most dismissive way possible. Not to mention I caught give me the dirtiest look which really made my skin crawl. Never have I ever had to call an employee out for be rude, but this time I did. Business 101 is being nice to the customers who are trying to give your business money. Luckily the guy took over and actually apologized, and thanks me for the feedback and then offered free pastries. I don't want free pasties, I was good customer service like the Tustin location ALWAYS offers, and I want my coffee that I paid for, and to leave. Not to mention, the places like a sardine cannon, you can only have one person walking by the counter at a time because it's so small and horribly laid out. read more

They have got to do something about their service line. This is typical on a weekend: I went for bread; the line was out the door with people wanting breakfast, coffee, pastries. I asked if I could just get the one bread left and go straight to the cashier. No. (not even a sorry.) 40 minutes on line. And the people getting pastries take forever to make up their minds. No, I want this, no, I want that, can I look at that up close? They need at least two separate lines, even if it takes a little room from the dining area. I'm a town resident, and I have had it with this place. I can get La Brea whole-wheat boule at the supermarket that's just about as good and a whole lot cheaper. I like the idea of organic and heritage bread, but I'd become an antique myself waiting on these lines. The hearty breads like country bread are terrific, fresh, crusty. The challah is the worst I've ever had ... don't go after the fine breads. I spent a fortune on a Basque cheesecake that I brought to a party and it was awful, also the worst ever. I almost never had Basque cheesecake anywhere again until someone had me try some of theirs at a restaurant and I was in heaven. Rye Goods pastries are not very good; their bakers lack the fine touch; the avocado toast is splendid; the potato leek soup was barely edible. I ate half because I was so hungry. In other words, this is a very up-and-down place and you have no way to know (aside from avocado toast) whether what you get will get is fine, great or a total waste of money. I would tell you tourists the better places to go but I'm keeping those for myself and letting you wait on crazy lines that aren't worth it. They really should emphasize what they're good at, hearty sourdough breads, and base any menu items on that. read more

Tucked away in the heart of downtown Laguna in the Lumber Yard is the super quaint Rye Goods! The shop itself has a small amount of seating but there is also plenty of outdoor tables to enjoy your yummy pastry, coffee, and the fresh air. Love Rye Goods bakery and cafe. First time at this location. Sunday morning after an hour of driving to Laguna Beach this was our first stop. Got a few pastries and coffee to enjoy before walking around the village. The ambiance here is great. Lots of indoor and outdoor seating near the shops. I loved their specialty item so much. It was a crispy and flaky biscuits stuffed with whipped butter/cream and jam. So delicious. My son got the tea cake and loved it so did I. I can easily say everything we ordered we enjoyed it. The door was locked, so we waited outside in 45 degree weather while we could clearly see staff inside getting ready. We were completely fine waiting. A few minutes later, a woman approached the door, unlocked the latch, and walked away without saying a single word. Inside, she was rude, dismissive, and acted inconvenienced by our presence. I have never experienced service like this. If I were the owner, I would reevaluate who is representing the business. I understand mornings can be busy, but basic hospitality goes a long way. I used to come here when they first opened and they had this most incredible oatmeal dish that they've since taken off their menu and I am baffled as to why. It was so creamy and flavorful and now it's gone and it's super disappointing. My husband and I came in yesterday to get two teas and a ginger molasses cookie which was really underwhelming. Although covered in sugar, it lacked flavor - I think it was missing salt tbh. The tea latte was also just okay. First time here. We had a gift card that needed to be used. The young gals who worked the front line got slammed just as we got here, but they had smiles on their faces and the service was quick! I had a 1/2 baguette toasted and topped with a ricotta, parmesean cheese omelette/scramble. It was DELICIOUS! Light, fluffy. PERFECT. My husband had the BahnMi sandwich; it was fresh and delicious with a little heat from the fresh jalapeño! Excellent. The unsweetened hibiscus tea was very good as was the coffee. For pastries we tried the fruit scone loaded with fruits and quite large. We also bought a loaf of jalapeño cheddar sourdough bread to go. My husband tried the breakfast bun, and the thumbprint cookies, both delicious, flakey and not overly sweet.
