One of the best meals of our life, right here!!!…read more My husband had been there for their opening, & was blown away by the food & cocktails. He kept insisting we go. He is NOT a foodie, and is rarely passionate about meals, so this is worth noting. We finally made it in, accompanied by our adult daughter, & holy smokes! Everything was perfection. We started with cocktails, and the outstanding "The Last Word" was the best of the bunch. Our server, Mike, made excellent recommendations for both drinks & food. His suggested wine pairing with the meals was spot-on & his intricate understanding of the menu was so helpful. The sourdough bread with marrow butter was amazing. The grilled bread is the perfect balance of chewy & soft, & does not have that tough crust that is an issue with many sourdoughs. The marrow butter was rich, savory & well seasoned. The salads were fresh & imaginative. The high quality olive oil & house made fresh mozzarella in the Caprese salad was so good!! Two of us had the filets, one had swordfish. The filets were cooked perfectly to order, well seasoned & melted in your mouth like butter. The accompanying Potatoes Anna were so delicious! I found myself wishing for a much larger portion of them because they were buttery, garlicky perfection. The haricot verts & roasted carrots were also tasty. Our daughter got the swordfish & ate every bite on her plate, saying it was amazingly delicious. They have several options for dessert, many of which are made in-house. We all got dessert, with the pots de creme being the stand out choice for two of us. My husband got the sorbet & loved it. The French Pressed coffee was superb - extremely flavorful & rich without bitterness. I ended up having two cups very late in the day because it was THAT GOOD. Prices are on par with other restaurants of the same caliber. Service is exceptional. It was about a 90 minute drive for us, through heavy rains & flooded streets, & it was worth it. We hope to return soon, as we've found our new favorite date night, special event place, & we are definitely willing to put in the drive time as long as they keep rewarding us with these amazing dining experiences.

We were seated with a direct kitchen view. I loved it. I enjoyed the experience. I thought the food was prepared well but some dishes could have been a bit more seasoned. I realize this is a matter of taste. All of our taste buds are not the same. I wished the sea bass and short rib could use more sauce. The couple next to us had dined here at least 6 times and really love it. All of the desserts were delicious. I'll return because I definitely want to try the Oyster Rockefeller. We walked by this place on our way to the weekend art fest, and 'twas like 'huh, 1937 eh .. pretty…read morecool'. The place had a bygone era dignity, a european alfresco vibe (a la Sudova), a refined mediterranean food vibe (a la Abigail Street) and there was the whole 1937 thing. When we got there the owner explained this was the descendants of the founder of Gold Start Chili opening this as a homage to his vision of a restaurant as an elevated yet welcoming family place. The place it turns out reflects the fact that they bought what was a refined saloon (where the Brat Boyz might have met in the 50s), along with a decidedly modern vibe in the back. I could ramble on about the food, but the salad makes the point. Everything they have is familiar .. with a twist. The salad is extra fresh because it is a head of romaine artfully sauced with a test for herbivores to practice turkey carving skills. The other dishes mirror that sort of familiar-meets -twist take. Devilled eggs (something I decidedly avoid at buffets) was quite good, with a homemade chili oils and black salt. The staff was quite chill, engaging but not talking your ear off. Much of the staff were childhood buddies who decided (I guess successfully) to test their friendship by going into business to together. The only part I'd quibble is the '1937' thing (it's when the Gold Star owner was born, not 2020 when the restaurant opened). But you know, quibbles get muffled when uttered with a mouth full of Biscoff 'meatloaf' (thick cut) and home made OrangeCello.

That said, I had the Blackened Salmon Salad which was outstanding. The piece is salmon was huge and perfectly cooked. The dressing complimented everyone on the plate beautifully. Just yum! Mark had the daily special - meatloaf. He said the mashed potatoes had the taste of box potatoes and the meatloaf was just okay. Some gravy would have gone a long way in improving the overall flavor of the dish. Someone had a Simple Sammy breakfast sandwich. It was nothing to write home about. The place is small and cute. There is a restaurant next door with additional tables. I'm not sure how all that work. Our server was super nice and helpful. We took Brownie Cheesecake Covered in Chocolate and a piece of Peanut Butter Pie home. The desserts were fantastic! A home run! It was the food we ordered that lacked. Maybe we just made poor choices. As we ordered, we saw many hamburgers come out of the kitchen, and they looked really delicious. We were hoping to find a little healthier fare, though, so even though we were tempted by the burgers and the overwhelmingly positive yelp reviews for the gyros, we went with other items from their menu. Hubby tried a new menu item, which was a chicken salad gyro. He said that the idea and the flavor was fine, but the chicken was really dry. It was not that it lacked sauce, but just that the chicken itself had been overcooked or held warming too long. I went with what they had labeled as a Greek dinner. The description on the menu chalkboard described sautéed onions and peppers along with some rice, pita and choice of meat. I guess I had kind of envisioned a platter with all of those items which could be put together in different combinations, with some colorful crisp veggies like we have had at other Greek/Mediterranean restaurants. When my food came out and I saw it for the first time, I actually said "No, that's not what I ordered." I found out, though, that it is indeed what I ordered, but not what I visualized. It was a bowl with rice at the base. The rice was totally covered by kind of a stewed onion mixture that was a brownish gray. It was entirely covering all of the rice and pieces of gyro meat. It was more like a bowl of stew or thickened French onion soup. The onions no longer had any texture to them as they were totally cooked down. Pretty much just all onions. If there had been peppers in there, I could not recognize any. Maybe they had also been cooked so much that they were unrecognizable. OK, I can eat rice with some stewed onions and bits of meat, so I just dug in. Everything was just all mixed together in one note. There was nothing that was a different flavor or texture in the concoction. It was also kind of unappealing sour, maybe lemon or vinegar? It was OK for the first few bites and I could get through it, but I really was pretty done with it halfway through. The pita slices on the side, were pretty good, but not really what I hoped would be the highlight of the meal. If we come back again, I think we should stick to a burger or gyro.
