If you want a "local" lobster place, this might be it. It was packed with locals who raved about it and knew the owner, who was out front and center at the restaurant greeting guests. There are these combination seafood platters for about $20-$28. I got the salad bar buffet for around $9. You get decent greens (spinach and mixed greens) but the toppings are limited and you only get standard dressings--there wasn't like olive oil & balsamic. If you're used to really high quality salads, you might be disappointed and are better off just indulging on some clam chowder or something! I'm sure there are other great tasting options though, and might venture back for more when I visit Maine again! We are in from Austin so we really wanted to try some of the local restaurants. My daughter found this one and we are glad she did. The service was a little a little slow but the food was really good. We had seafood fettuccine with the white wine sauce. It normally comes with cheese sauce but they were happy to substitute for me. The plate was large and had an ample supply of fish, scallops, & shrimp. We also ordered the seafood imperial and it also had plenty of fish. My wife loved the seafood chowder. This was our first lobster experience in Maine. We spent the entire day driving from Bangor to Alexander, then to Addison, and back to Bangor on Route 1. We were greeted by a friendly waitress and seated quickly. The restaurant had just locals coming in for dinner. There was small talk about how the winter was. We ordered the seafood platter which was a mix of fried shrimp, clams, scallops, and haddock. This was really nothing special. It was fried shellfish, which is always good. We also ordered the lobster roll. The roll contained nice chunks of lobster with a light coating of mayonnaise. The roll itself was toasted nicely. This roll and the seafood platter is really what good food is all about. It is simple, its cooked properly. The food shines, there are no gimmics. We finished our meal with a slice of blueberry pie and a grapenut pudding. I rated Ruth and Wimpy's a four because I am not sure if there is a place that is better. In Illinois the only thing we have close to this is a Red Lobster. read more

We stopped here for lunch on our way to Bar Harbor. How fortunate. This place is a find. They have an extensive menu and everything looks good. We had clam chowder that was as good as it gets. The portion they call "a cup" was actually a 12 ounce bowl. We had lobster rolls for the main course which were probably the best we ever ate and for $11.95 on the lunch special were a bargain. The accompanying thin onion rings were crisp and fried to order. They boil the lobsters right outside in their lobster pound. The collection of beer bottles and model cars is incredible and fills every wall in all of the rooms. Damn, it doesn't get any better than this. Wonderful find! Thank you to the others that posted reviews, as that is what led us to Ruth & Wimpy's. At lunch, we sampled a small order of steamed mussels (20+ for $4.95) and then each got a lobster roll. The mussels were delicious! The lobster roll contained a large portion of meat, in a very light sauce, served on toasted bread (like a super - thick slice of Texas toast split open). It was very good. We had a choice of fries or onion rings with our rolls. We both chose onion rings.. then had the choice of thick cut or thin cut...we ordered one of each to try. Both of us preferred the thick cut, as they were a little easier for us to eat. The menu here is vast and I included a couple of pictures, which doesn't even represent 1/2 of their offerings. Wife and I stopped in based on a friend's recommendation! The food was delicious and the portions were more than you can eat, but that didn't stop us from having homemade deserts. We're visiting Maine so of course I hade steamed lobster and steamed clams with spicy potato bites on the side. Everything was wonderful and the lobster was so sweet. My wife had broiled salmon and it was delicious as well. And if we weren't already stuffed, we both had dessert. They were very busy on a Friday night but didn't wait long for a table. Our waitress Rachelle was very nice. Order taken promptly, food came out in a timely manner and tasted great. Had the thin onions rings(Tasty) and for dinner the shrimp dinner. Shrimp was nice a fresh. I had the pumpkin pie for dessert and was great. This place is crazy hard to review coming from an honest foodie. I like the salad bar option (if they still have it.) I love the lobster special prices. It's one of the only places I get them, since a small lobster meal is around $15.00 as opposed to the extreme up charging lots of other places do. Awesome local, out of the way spot for delicious Maine fare! Friends who live here told us about it, and we went 3-4 times in just 6 days! They have everything for lunch and dinner, such a big menu of crowd pleasers. Plus all the lobster dishes you can think of. It has a log cabin feel, with lobster crates right next door. Service can be slow and the place is not the cleanest, but the waitresses have always been friendly and we've eaten here many times. I'm writing this "off season" as Ruth & Wimpy's won't reopen until May, 2020 (assuming the coronavirus situation permits). We spend four months each summer in the area, and this is by far our favorite local restaurant. Large portions, reasonable prices and very friendly service. I am shocked reading some of the negative reviews here, as we've never had a bad experience in 12 years of regularly eating there. The seafood is top of the line, and priced right. Whether just lobster and corn or a complete spread with steamers and mussels, everything is always perfect. Haddock nuggets are amazing, and some of the stuffed seafood entrees have also been wonderful. The small salad bar is no longer there. The massive desert selections created by Wimpy are fantastic. Bread pudding! We can't wait to get back there in June! read more

I've never had a more entertaining waitress with genuine love for her job and entertaining customers. She was a gem! The low part of the experience had to be the seafood pasta I ordered. The white sauce was pretty bland and the seafood atop seemed like leftovers. The cheesy garlic bread was a saving grace. The service: definitely 5 stars. Our waitress, Bobbi, was friendly, outgoing, and attentive. We loved her. Unfortunately, the food was awful. My tea had a funky flavor, my shrimp cocktail was okay but came out with a bunch of shrimp just thrown in a cup over a glob of (not tasty) cocktail sauce, and lastly, my lobster bisque was probably the worst I've ever had. My family and I ate here while on vacation in Bar Harbor. We decided to save the obligatory lobster dinner for our final night and Ruth & Wimpy's was recommended to us. To start with the good: the staff was friendly (though service was poor and unprofessional). Unfortunately, that's it. Where to begin? Everything was overpriced for the quality. It was obvious that corners were cut to maximize profit. We ordered: Mussels in white wine and garlic sauce, for $11.95, tasted like they'd been boiled with the lobsters, the white wine was a cheap blush and the garlic was out of a jar and was poured over the mussels after they were cooked. The mussels were gritty with sand and rocks and the 'sauce' tasted like water. Salad bar was disappointing and not restocked. Drawn butter was obviously artificial, not even worth the calories. Lobsters were tiny for the price, but were fine, despite not having butter to dip them in. They were supposed to come with corn on the cob and rolls, but neither ever came out. Baked potatoes were undercooked, and grayish in color, I don't even know how you get them that color?! Seafood chowder for $6.95 was in a small coffee cup and tasted like it was from a can. Seafood Imperial for a whopping $15 was described to us as seafood in a special sauce. There was about $3 worth of seafood and 2 cups worth of a broccoli cheese sauce. It was disgusting. Basket of fried haddock and clams offered 2 chicken nugget size pieces of haddock and a cup's worth of clams for $13. The highlight of the evening was when the family beside us (who were out celebrating their 9 year old son's birthday and obviously on vacation) said "Well, Johnny, this will go down as your worst birthday meal ever!" and they all started laughing. The restaurant is crowded, feels and looks filthy because of the ancient carpeting and dusty knick knacks covering the walls AND ceiling. One in our party had lobster and liked it well enough. Two fried seafood dinners were fairly terrible and seemed frozen, a shrimp pasta dinner was left mostly untouched. The macaroni and cheese side was the most laughably sad I've ever been served. If we hadn't been hungry and already invested so much time waiting, we would have left. Suffice to say, you should look elsewhere even if you just want a diner experience. read more

After reading the yelp reviews I wasn't sure what was in-store. We got there at 5:15 on a Thursday and waited a 1/2 hr for an inside table for 5. Waitress was very attentive and the place was full. My wife ordered the Twin lazy (picked) lobster and I had the twin shore dinner which was two lobsters, clams, mussels and corn. Perfect for me, all was good. The teenagers had a chicken Cesar salad and milkshake, a ribeye with Mac & cheese and potatoes (he couldn't finish) and the oldest..lobster/shrimp pasta. All was wonderful. We also had a couple 22oz draft local beers that were reasonably priced. Overall I loved it.topped that with the wild blueberry pie with soft serve ice cream and it was great. A Mac attack, which was lacking and the burger tasted old. Onion rings were the side. They were homemade but we're not very crispy but rather the breaking was chewy almost. Dropped by Saturday night around 8pm, it wasnt too crowded - we (3) were sat immediately. Great cozy atmosphere, clean restrooms and our waitress was fantastic. I ordered the Ahi Tuna with a bake potatoe and salad - it was disappointing. The menu says sushi grade tuna so I was expecting a nice piece of fresh tuna seared lightly with some seasoning. I received a perfect rectangular piece of tuna 3"x5" and 1" thick, it was overcooked and bland tasting - really not that good. My baked potatoes was a couple hours old as the potatoe started to seperate from the skin and the flesh was a light yellowish - baked potatoes should be cooked in small batches, every hour so they are fresh. My friend got the Seafood Chowder & Haddock sandwich - he said it was good. My other friend got a bowl of Clam Chowder - he said it was ok, he also ordered the Lobster & clams and said it was good. I would go back, as I loved the atmosphere and the friendly staff, I'd just stay away from the Ahi Tuna. read more
