In my opinion, Chippers is the best restaurant in this area. Mac and Cheese: Of course I have tried the mac and cheese, which is EXCELLENT, including the Lobster Mac and Cheese. Crab Cakes: The crab cakes with the creamy parmesan sauce are superb, the texture is so light that even with the rich flavors they don't feel heavy. Chowders: All the seafood chowders are fabulous (and apparently won awards, which does not surprise me). Seafood Pasta Dishes: The scampi is amazing, and of course you might have noticed on my profile that my "Last Meal on Earth" is the Cajun Seafood Alfredo from Chippers. Vegetarian Pasta: the Ravioli Florentine is wonderful, I highly recommend this. Salmon: It's so good, all four of the different ways it's prepared it's always perfectly cooked. And even though I thought "wild rice blend and grilled asparagus" sounded rather boring, it was actually extremely tasty and I felt silly for expecting it to be boring! The garlic mashed potatoes are great as well. The lemon mascarpone cake is almost supernaturally good. Most of the desserts have chocolate, so I have not tried most of them, but that cake is so good that I went through a sort of phase of obsessing about trying (unsuccessfully LOL) to figure out how to recreate the lemon cake. Another place where the service elevated the meal -- my son had a dandelion lemonade (pretty flower garnish) and a twenty ounce steak! I had the lazy man's lobster -- it was tasty and paired well with the baked potato and asparagus. My husband looked like he was enjoying the Panko crusted halibut. Incredibly, my son also had a triple chocolate, brownie special and we also had a gluten-free chocolate torte. Each meal also came with this amazing fish chowder, and a small house salad. Lovely little place for dinner! My husband and I were staying at a B&B nearby and stopped in for dinner based on a recommendation from the owners...did not disappoint! It is small and only open a few days a week for dinner so be sure to get a reservation. We had the panko encrusted haddock and the scallops, both of which came with a side salad, a roll, and a small cup of their famous haddock chowder. The chowder was delicious and the scallops were seasoned perfectly. The panko haddock had a nice crispy texture and was served with garlic mashed potatoes. Finished it off with a chocolate flourless torte which my husband loved (a little dense for my taste, but that's the nature of the dessert). This is my favorite place to eat. The food is delicious and perfectly paired to please the palate. This is the only restaurant I can think of where I don't have just one "go to" meal that I eat every time I dine here. I enjoy their salmon, lobster Alfredo (I think they put the meat of a whole lobster in there) and their Cajun seafood Alfredo. their steak is delicious too. And the chowder... hands down THE BEST chowder around; I upgrade from a sample to a cup every time. And the service is stellar. Christina is awesome! She remembers a familiar face and really gets to know her customers. Sarah is wonderful as well. And Michelle is fun too. We had the haddock chowder which was awesome. The salad that comes with the dinner was perfect. Their blue cheese dressing is awesome. I got the filet with the mushroom sauce which was amazing. Friends and family have recommended this small roadside eatery so I thought it fitting to go there for an anniversary dinner. Chipper is the chef/owner and it's apparent he's in charge. The menu was extensive and almost too big. The food is good but the prices! $35 for baked haddock? Add tax and tip thats $44 for an entre. Yikes! What a gem! We were staying in area off season and looking for a restaurant to celebrate a birthday. The food was off-the-charts delicious - very upscale cuisine in a comfortable warm setting. We tried lots of things which were all good - the ribs appetizer was so tender, the seafood fra diavolo was loaded with scallops, shrimp, and lobster over fresh in- house pasta, and steaks and the crispy spinach were big hits. Nice wine list! Shout out for the haddock chowder too! The staff were so kind to our group with an elderly handicapped person AND an angry toddler - thank you! If I could give a zero star, I would. Tonight, we had a reservation for dinner for 5 at 6:30 pm. We get there, get seated, all is looking great. Waitress comes...comments (negatively) on my in-laws' accents. It "seemed" like a joke, so everyone nodded, laughed a little, but it was just a taste of what was to come. We got our drinks, our soup and salad round. Then nothing. Crickets. No one to check on water, no one to refill teas/drinks. Like I said, crickets. A man walks over to our table. Big man, turquoise polo shirt. He asks about my son and his iPad. Seems friendly at first. Then turns to my father in law, and makes an ugly comment about how this would never have been allowed in "their day". And then, comments on their accents. Frankly, we all thought he worked there initially and were so floored at the comments, that we sat there in stone silence. Food still hadn't come. No one had come to check on us. Finally, at about 7:40, after waiting and waiting, with no one coming around, we cry uncle and get up and look for the waitress. Literally, stood up and went to hunt her down. Oh, suddenly the food is coming and is there in 10 minutes. ME thinks someone has forgotten to put an order in. The boorish attitudes we experienced first-hand tonight was unacceptable. One was the restaurant's fault (plus the crappy service), the other was the fault of the other patron. Needless to say, we shall not return. I will feel our experience was not in vain if others see this and are duly warned prior to entering. read more

My fiancé and I were able to get last minute reservations to Chippers and we were so glad that we did. We started with the mushrooms stuffed with crab and had the Chicken Parmesan and the Rib Eye as our entrees. Each entree comes with a salad and their award winning chowder. One bite of the chowder and you total see why it's award winning. Everything was delicious and the staff was so welcoming and attentive. The chicken and rib eye were cooked to perfection. We just had a delightful meal at this restaurant. After reading all the previous, somewhat discouraging reviews, we decided to give it a go anyway. My husband remembered that years ago this was one of his fathers favorite places to eat. We had reservations at 5:30 on a Saturday night. We tried to dine there on the previous night without reservations, but they were packed. When we entered there were only a few other patrons. The hostess was friendly and helpful in offering wine selections. My husband ordered Chicken Marsala and I had the Stuffed Lobster Tail. We were quickly given chowder, salad, bread and drinks. Our main entree was placed by 6:10. My lobster was cooked to perfection and sandwiched between two crab cakes. The portion was generous and more than I could eat. The crab cakes were light with a nice seasoning ( not the best I've eaten, but tasty) and topped with a light cheese cream sauce. Hubby's chicken was tender and good. He thought the gravy was a little bland, but okay ( plenty of mushrooms). Our desert was a lemon bar with a very nice lemon whip creamy creation topped with fresh berries. A very nice finish to a solid meal. Wait staff was excellent ( both hostess and waitress). By the time we left (about 6:45) the restaurant was filling up. Give Chippers a chance! After perusing Chippers menu online, and listening to many great reviews of the restaurant, I decided to take my date over for dinner. I ordered their Duck in orange sauce, but when the meal came, I realized that there was a mistake made; they served me sliced steak instead. After flagging down the waitress and telling her what had happened, and she promised to check with the chef. A few minutes later, she returned and told me that he'd made no mistake and it was duck that I had. Brown meat with a pink middle, no way was this duck, it had both the texture and the taste of sliced steak. I even gave a piece to the lady with whom I was dining and she agreed with my findings. The cook should have come out and looked, but didn't, and since I've had bad experiences in various restaurants after sending food back, and since the food would have been thrown out, I chose to eat what I had. It's really too bad, the service was very good, the waitresses were very nice, and the soup, salad, asparagus, and mashed potatoes were all superb. My date had the Filet Mignon, and it was spectacular. In closing, I will definitely give this restaurant another chance, but for now, their duck is off the menu. read more

Never ever ever been more offended. After being treated poorly all night finally our food Comes. ( busy so even though literally every one who came in after got served we forgave) then my husbands food comes out and it tastes like a salt lick. The Salted caramel white Russia drink special was to die for (can I get the recipe please?!). My husband got the Stuffed halibut and I got the Seafood alfredo both of which where spectacular!!! We shared the crab cake appetizer which I was a but skeptical on because being from Maryland I have high standards when it comes to all things crab, but let me tell you! It did NOT disappoint. We waited over an hour for our main course, and then my entree came out at least five minutes before my husband's and son's -- and as their plates were served, the server said something like "I hope this is what you ordered." This was a nice little restaurant on Rt. 1, that was convenient to stop at during our vacation in Winter Harbor. The prices are a little steep, but if everything on the menu is "fresh" like the menu reads, than I can understand the prices a bit. I'm not 100% that everything they offer is fresh and that nothing was frozen, just because of the size of the menu, BUT taste wise I have no reason to suspect overuse of the word "fresh" on the menu. Its just a hunch. There's a good selection of beef and seafood dishes, amongst some other dishes. Most are classic recipes, and there's nothing too modern or out-of-place multi-cultured. When you walk in, you can tell its the ol' local place, and the offerings on the menu go right along with it. I do think they need to work on some prices. I understand spending almost $30 on a crab stuffed haddock if everything is fresh. Its a little high, but my wife absolutely loved it. I however can't imagine why fried clams, which is what I got, should cost just under $25. That's like a $15 dish, max. I'm wondering if they just bumped up the prices on some things, chicken tenders included, so their menu didn't have some dishes with prices in the "teens" next to their dishes pushing $30. Maybe they just didn't want to see that kind of price gap haha. The clams, by the way, were nothing magical. They were exactly what you expect when you order fried clams, but needed a little salt. But hey, that's not a knock against the cooking. I got exactly what I expected! But at that price, I feel like I could have gotten a lot more at one of the many lobster pounds all over the coast. I would definitely go back if I was staying around Winter Harbor or somewhere north of Ellsworth again. There's not 100's of restaurants to chose from in that area, unlike Bar Harbor, so convenience certainly factors in. I would not, however, bother to make the trip out of Ellsworth or Bar Harbor. The food definitely tastes good and I wasn't disappointed, but with the competition back in "town", I just couldn't imagine spending the time and money to make the trip out. I don't mean that to sound harsh. I'm happy giving the restaurant 4 stars, and again, we were satisfied with our dishes. Also, apparently each entree comes with a complementary cup of haddock chowder. I thought it was a little watery, but it did have a fantastic taste.
