Not many choices in the area our hotel suggested we try this place. Don't expect fine dining this is a roadside Downeast eatery with local seafood and hamburgers on the menu. A Lobster Roll special was tasty served with a mayo lobster stuffed split roll. For the price the size was right. A Lobster Boil came with a small lobster, very hard shell, which was full. Steamer clams and mussels and an ear of corn. Price was very reasonable compared to the restaurants in Bar Harbor. Dessert of Homemade Blueberry Pie was a little disappointing. Recommended by my co-worker and it was worth it. Very busy, but only had to wait for 15-20 ish minutes. The owners and staff were very nice and professional. The menu has a ton of options, but when in Maine....You could really taste the freshness in the lobster and seafood. We ordered the claw dinner (7 lobster claws cooked in butter) came with two sides. The Caesar salad was on point and the Mac and cheese was cheesy and creamy. My husband for the fried seafood sampler (scallops, clams, shrimp, and haddock nuggets) with fries and coleslaw. 3.5 stars We were staying in an Airbnb nearby and Ruth & Wimpy's was recommended by our hosts. There was no hostess, I stood inside the door with staff walking by me numerous times with no acknowledgement or a, "We'll be right with you." People were steadily coming in after me. Finally a woman who was sitting at a table walked back to the kitchen and yelled, "Hey, you've got people out here!" I'm assuming she was an employee? We were finally sat in the enclosed all season room outside. Our server was very nice, just very slow. If I asked for something (i.e. extra napkins, wipes, etc.) it would take forever. Very few, if any, redeeming qualities. Definitely wouldn't go out of my way to visit this place again. This was just kind of a miserable experience from the get-go. Like the weather outside on this particular night, the service was bitter and cold. Our particular visit took place in late September. Maybe this place reaches its stride during the height of the busy season, but by late fall, the quality of food and service enters a severe and irrecoverable tailspin. The buffalo wing appetizer was the saving grace. Encased in a thick, impenetrable breading, it had an indifferent brown look to it. Nothing special. I already had bad vibes about this place, and looking at these sad little wings merely confirmed my speculations. But da-YUM. One bite later, and I was a converted man. Like a Christian gone atheist. Looking back, I should have just ordered five plates of wings. Because my pasta was the worst thing that ever happened in modern society. It legit tasted like stale cardboard dry-aged in an old musty attic. Like where you keep your Christmas ornaments and only go once per year, and that regardless of regulation and modern-day awareness, is still somehow lined with asbestos. I think my dad's pasta had the same sauce. And god bless him, he somehow stomached it and ate the whole thing. We had hiked the whole day, so he undoubtedly worked up an appetite. But there's no way he enjoyed it. Maybe in his advanced age his taste buds had mercifully numbed him so he could be spared the horror of this thick, pasty, liquid death. The whole lobster was cooked beyond recognition, and the clams were filled with black, bitter-tasting gunk. And the icing on the cake was having the outside dining area filled with massive cobwebs and crawling with spiders. This place definitely gave me the creepy crawlies. One thing my husband really wanted during our trip to Maine was a good lobster dinner. Ruth and Wimpy's did not disappoint! He got the shore dinner with a full lobster and steamed mussels and clams. Our waitress, Hannah, was great and gave him pointers on how to eat it. We also got the Parmesan crusted haddock, which was good and the seafood quesadilla which was great! We popped in after dinner one night just for pie. I was craving another slice of blueberry pie ala mode, and Ruth & Wimpy's was the only place in the area open at night that had any. The location is very convenient off a main road, with plentiful parking. We were seated quickly, and put our order in for pie. As we sat, we looked around the décor. I understand it's supposed to be campy and home-style, but the decorations at least in our area, were in a dire need of a dusting and left me questioning hygiene. We also noticed their menu wasn't online so we added it. The pie arrived, and instead of ice cream, was topped with what looked like soft serve, which was odd. The crust tasted very under-baked, and the sweet complexity of the berries were completely masked by a heavy handed cinnamon. Despite the local berry part, this pie could not resurrect our experience and was not in my opinion worth eating. Service was curt, unfriendly, and seemed bothered by us only ordering pie, prices were good but quality was poor. Looking over the menu I understood that what we were hoping for was never going to be met here, but we were hoping for the best anyway. Personally I was not impressed. The waitress was kind of rude and didn't seem like she wanted to be there. I had asked for sweet tea and got half lemonade and tea and was told that it was sweet tea. When our food came out she didn't wait for me to grab the plate and almost dropped my food on me, I had to ask her multiple times for a refill. My food was mediocre and cold. We called this place and asked if we could still order food if we came there in 10 minutes and they've said yes. When we arrived in said time, while we had to back track from our destination, they've said they just closed everything in the kitchen, even thought it was still 15 minutes before closing time. Ruth and Wimpy's has that old diner style with vinyl booths and cheap tables. There are shelves and shelves of beer bottles, beer steins and cars. The walls are adorned with lots of license plates. Funny sayings have been printed and tacked to the ceiling which were entertaining. Oh, and there is one men's toilet and one women's toilet for the whole restaurant so don't wait til the last minute to go. We arrived around 4:00pm and were seated inside promptly. Then we waited. At least 10 minutes before someone approached our table to take our order. BTW while waiting we became acutely aware of the wait staff saying "corner" every time they went into or out of kitchen. Our booth was right by the kitchen so we heard "corner" every few seconds. It was annoying to say the least. How about fixing the corner??? Anyway, we ordered a couple IPAs and some sodas. For dinner, my sister and husband both ordered the fried haddock basket. Oddly, one came with two pieces of fish and the other only had one. The meal with one piece was on a smaller plate with less french fries. What the??? They were hungry so they just ate it anyway. The thin pieces of haddock were ok but the french fries were cold. My spouse had the very expensive clam chowder and equally expensive buffalo sauce shrimp. Neither of them was good so it was a costly mistake. The chowder was thick with potatoes and clams but was tasteless. The shrimp were spiral shaped, and they all looked exactly the same as if they came frozen from a vendor. The shrimp had no flavor nor did the weird breading. I ordered the 1 1/2 lb lobster and fries. They "messed up" the lobster. I don't know how that was the explanation the waitress gave me. They were nice enough to give me the option of waiting for a new one to be cooked or getting the Lazy Man's Lobster for the same price. I opted for Lazy Man. The rest of the table had their food so I watched them eat while I waited. The lobster arrived in about 5 minutes and the french fries in about 10 minutes (which were the best part as they were fresh and piping hot). The lobster was ok although a bit stringy, and the claw meat had a weird taste like iodine or something. The service was inconsistent, and they left dirty dishes on the table too long. The ambiance is unique and unassuming, the food plentiful, service friendly, wide selection of menu options, and we're looking forward to going back. What else do you want from a restaurant? Looking for something different, I had the pulled pork grilled cheese sandwich with crispy onion rings on the side. Unusual offering but tasty recommendation by our server. My son had the deep fried shrimp and he gobbled them up hungrily. We didn't try to homemade pies, but there were plenty to choose from. We summer in downeast Maine, and Ruth & Wimpy's is our regular night out. Good food, reasonable prices (particularly the daily specials), good service (be patient) and endless variety of desserts. Also suggest ordering $25 gift certificates for $12.50 in advance from Seize the Deal (one per table). Depending on the night, there will usually be a lobster (with corn, or with fries, or with salad) special for under $18. Specials are posted on their Facebook page, but usually pretty close to opening. Whatever they do to the fried haddock (nuggets, dinner or burger) is wonderful. Plenty of options for non-seafood eaters, but the seafood is always fresh and well-prepared. Reservations are sometimes possible, but not always on the same day. There's a phone app to make reservations. You should call if you are a large party. Like most businesses in the area, they are short-staffed. Only open Monday - Friday right now from 3:30 - 8:30 p.m. This changes seasonally, so check first. Be prepared to wait to be seated, particularly during prime hours. This is a busy restaurant. Ruth & Wimpy's is hidden gem just barely off the beaten path of Acadia. It's actually a nice scenic drive out to the restaurant, and the price/quality/portions of their food is unmatched! We indulged with a bucket of steamed mussels, bucket of steamed clams, stuffed lobster tail, seafood imperial, and fried oysters. Everything was super delicious. We are on vacation and wanted a quick bite without having to drive to Bar Harbor and this place caught our eye driving. Unfortunately, we came inside to no greeting or hostess while the sign clearly said "Wait to be seated". We stood there for about 10 minutes as other waitresses just walked right by us. There were plenty of open tables just no one visible to seat us. Finally, one waitress noticed us standing there and brought us to a table. The price is cheap, but the roll was smaller than the palm of my baby sized hand. The meat was also chewy and tough and there was no lemon to give the roll some zest. The bread was comparable to a hot dog bun, nothing special. The Fried Shrimp Po' Boy was really good, though. The sandwich was overflowing with fried shrimp and topped with lettuce, tomato, and a spicy aioli on ciabatta. We also had a sampler of fried cheese, jalapeño poppers, and fried pickles. Although fried food is so bad for you, this was definitely fried food done right. Hot and crispy, served with sides of ranch and another sauce.
