What a darling restaurant with so many yummy choices!!! My first time there this past weekend. We sat on the cutest patio, very clean and great customer service. I pretty much was a captive eater since I was unfamiliar to the neighborhood and was looking for a lunch venue where I could get a burger. The Chicken-Waffle house next door was an "I'll pass" option, so I opted for the cute little house restaurant with outdoor/indoor seating. As bad luck would have it, I had to take a table indoors since the outdoor seating was full. A woman and her husband were sitting directly opposit my table, and the woman did nothing but hack up hairballs through the entire meal, making me wonder if she had Covid or some other contagious disease! Very off-puting since I wanted a leisurely meal but instead had to choke it down just to get out of there. It was overpriced, way too much food...especially the Quinoa and rice in the bottom of the bowl and chicken that didn't have any flavor. No beef on the menu, which was what I REALLy wanted since I never eat beef at home! Pages of Vegan/Vegetarian in the menu, with only chicken or tuna or shrimp for protein. Yes the size of this place and the way the interior is might be considered a little weird but what is good about Rutabegorz is that they serve some pretty bomb and seriously delicious food items for people that are trying to be a little bit healthy. Don't worry if you aren't a health nut they do have other items on the menu that will suite to your liking as well! Salads here are lovely to eat and most of the time I will share with another person because the serving size is just huge for me! Fresh veggies, lovely monthly deals and a quirky unique restaurant... That is what Rurabegorz has to offer. I always thought this place was in Fullerton but its actually in the city called Orange. Hippie as they come. Nice patio-type seating. I had the egg sandwich and a sandwich with avocado and chicken. The soup was AOK. This place is definitely unique to the area. It is not the first place I would suggest eating, but it is an experience. It does offer a healthy option compared to the other places. All the ingredients seem so fresh. I HATED BEING THE ONLY (ASIAN) MALE in a restaurant full of middle aged white women! But damn, my garlic chicken sandwich on SQUAW was DELICIOUS. You gotta eat this one while it's still warm so don't waste time mooching off that humongous bowl of salad that someone in your party ordered because all that beautifully melted cheese must be consumed while it's still hot and stringy. I honestly wasn't a fan of their vinaigrette (not really sure what to do with it since the sandwich doesn't come with a salad); it makes me have acid reflux just from smelling it... I tried their walnut that kissed the chicken also and I was so glad that I didn't order it. It didn't have much flavor and I was puzzled as to why this was one of their popular sandwiches. My one-liner: A lot of healthier eating options, that taste just.. alright. Wanted to try Linx, but it was too crowded, and we did not have the patience to wait. We walked for a little bit and ended up at Rutabegorz. I liked the decor, it seemed like a bed and breakfast, but note that I have never been to one, lol. We were seated immediately. It was around 8 pm, but the restaurant was still busy. Our waitress, despite seeing we were indecisive in ordering (our first time), did not offer any suggestions and only checked on us once. I opted for a "greener" meal, trying to give this "healthy-eating" another shot and got a falafel wrap. After wrinkling his nose, my fiance ordered penne pasta, stating "Everything looks too healthy". After his disappointing meal at Green Tomato Grill, he has not been into trying anything else that had more than 2 green things, except if it were sandwiched by slices of 100% ground beef. But Rutabegorz was not disappointing. In fact, it was alright. Nothing to brag about, but it was edible enough to finish the plate. The falafel wrap came with fresh greens and 2 dipping sauces, ranch and hummus, which changed things up a little. The pasta was mediocre and forgettable. My brother ordered a pita pizza, which I did not try, which he said was "Alright". The highlight of the evening was the Peanut Butter Shake. Very good, not overly sweet, with just the right amount of peanut butter goodness. Also, instead of a hot mocha, the server provided us with a cold drink. Our waitress took it back and apologized, brought in the hot mocha, then also returned with the cold mocha, stating it would just go to waste. In high school I used to frequent the Fullerton location, and I remember it being cramped and filled with stoner waiters who took forever. So when my friend wanted to come here for dinner last night, I was not looking forward to it. I was pleasantly surprised! We sat on the very cute patio, didn't even go inside. It was so nice outside, and they were not busy, so we practically had the place to ourselves. Our waiter was not stoned out of his mind and he was very nice and helpful. I had a cup of broccoli cheese soup, that was brought out within a few minutes of me ordering it, and some garlic chicken pasta. The pasta was really good! My friend had a salad, and she had a couple special requests for it, and they did everything the way she asked. I was impressed, and I think I will definitely come back! read more

I've tried the Fullerton location and this location and kind of feel the same way about both locations... now I know a lot of people will tell me that I need to go to the Tustin location. I'm not opposed to the idea... I just haven't done it yet. I have two major issues with this location: 1. There's virtually no parking for this restaurant. It's extremely challenging trying to find a spot. 2. Service (like Fullerton) is pretty bad! I had to keep requesting my server's presence all while feeling intrusive about doing so. More like 3.5 I came here for lunch at a quarter after 11 and we were the only people in this place. First off the decor is really cute and homey, you feel like you're in someone's grandmas house. Knick knacks and collectibles every where. The service was great as it should be since we were the only customers. Our food came out literally 2 min after we ordered it, it was like magic! I ordered the lunch combo with 1/2 salad 1/2 sandwich. For my sandwich I chose the tuna on squaw. This was alright, nothing special. A very heavy mayo tuna salad with lettuce, tomato, and a slice of cheddar. I could have made this better at home. The salad I chose was the Dala with balsamic vinaigrette. This salad was huge, more of an entree sized salad. Your basic garden salad with sunflower seeds added. The dressing was delicious, it was more of a creamy balsamic, sweet and tangy. For almost $9 though I didn't really feel like it was worth it. We also tried their daily special, the carrot chipotle dip. At only $1 you couldn't really pass it up and this was worth the money. The dip was cold which was refreshing. It didn't have an overpowering carrot flavor just a slight sweetness that went well with the smokiness of the chipotle which left a little heat in the back of your throat. The star of the day was definitely the Lone Ranger cookie. For $1.60 I was thinking this sh*t better be good. It was better than good, it was freakin' amazing. First off it was the size of a small pancake and it was thick too. It was nice and chewy with a little crispiness from the cornflakes. Oh yeah, this cookie has cornflakes, coconut, and walnuts, a perfect combination. It's delicious! I gave an extra star just for this behemoth of a cookie. Yesterday my partner and I decided to visit Rutas to have lunch. With the recent Orange County weather, we wanted something that wasn't too heavy but still filling. We've visited this location multiple times, this is my first time leaving a review. Customer service is always fabulous whether not they are busy or slow we are always tended to you in a timely manner. The food is always fresh and taste game sometimes plain but I understand it's a healthy alternative. My only complaint/concern would be portion size. I am a petite female but they have to have a sandwich was not filling and left me craving more... The ladies restroom is adorable, you will feel like the little mermaid but don't bring your Dingell Hopper in there with you. LOL Overall I prefer this location over the Fullerton location because I like the choice of outdoor seating but if you have a large appetite be willing to spend anywhere from $15-$25 to satisfy your hunger. read more

I've been a long-time regular at the Tustin Rutabegorz, but this was my first time at the Orange location. Let me just say that I find it adorable!! It is actually a cottage turned restaurant with plenty of outdoor patio space, making it the ideal location for a spring or summer lunch. I came when the sun was bright and sunny with the perfect amount of spring breeze fluttering through the trees. Located in downtown Orange, it is surrounded by plenty of bustle. The food here is delish too! I usually get the Italiano Salad (my absolute fave salad in the world), but this time I opted for something from their seasonal specials menu. I got the turkey sandwich with cranberries, cream cheese, and walnuts on squaw bread. The flavor combination is perfect! The crunch and salt of the walnuts balance out the sweetness of the cranberries which balance out the heaviness of the cream cheese. Try the cocky leeky soup too. It really warms up that belly. Unfortunately, I've always been disappointed here. I have visited multiple locations, and tried a wide variety of their foods. I've had tacos, salads, chips and dip, coffee, and even plain old eggs and toast. Each time, the food has been bland. Even the eggs and toast were bad! I'm not sure how you can get that wrong. 3.0 stars. Meh. Since I've been spending my days at Chapman.. I've been looking at the little different joints around Old Town Orange. First of all, I love Old Town. There's so many cute little shops.. I just haven't had the fortune of trying them all. I had Bruxie's -- which seems to be the biggest hit on this block.. but was happy to find the yelp reviews for Rutabegorz which I spotted earlier too. It's a warm day, perfect early summer weather -- it makes me crave vegetables. So I sought vegetarian/ salads. I guess I was a little misled. When the categorization of a restaurant is listed as vegetarian.. I read it to be a vegetarian joint, not a joint with vegetarian options (or at least a majority of the menu items should be vegetarian). Otherwise every place with a house salad can essentially be "vegetarian". In Rutabegorz' defense tho, they had quite a few entree selections that were vegetarian friendly -- but nothing out of the norm. We're talking pastas with no meat (not uncommon), salads with fruits (also not uncommon), etc. Shrugs. I eat meat.. so no major qualm.. just was surprised I guess. Like everyone else, I found the cottage setting to be charming. It's like walking into an old house converted into cafe. This seems to be common around this area (Chapman Coffehouse down the way still one of my favorite places to hit up for this very reason). The cutest little grandma ladies work the front and they're very friendly.. but most of their attention goes to the regulars. They were still friendly enough. Cool little bit of history in their mini mag style menus. I ordered the garlic chicken salad to go. I can't say that I was impressed. It's not bad.. but it's nothing to rave about. [Pros:] - they use mixed greens and no iceberg lettuce - add the feta cheese. it makes a difference.. not sure if the sprinkle of feta is worth the 85 cents. - the dressing this dish comes with is pretty good. a balsamic vinegrette with herbs in it. not sure if it would house made. [Cons:] - the candied walnuts were wayyy too candied. it reminded me of butter pecan from Louisiana- mostly sugar little nut. - the chicken was a little dry and looked like the garlic chicken you buy for salads from costco.. - nothing much else to the salad but chicken, shredded carrots, fried wonton noodles, a little bit of avo, and the too sweet walnuts. oh and one slice of cucumber and two slices of tomato -- neither very tasty, but palatable. - $11 bucks for the container.. meh. it's something you can make at home. nothing about this salad made it unique. I saw the big bowls that people were talking about.. maybe you get more lettuce if you eat in. the ratios of ingredients were off.. and of course it was my luck to have wayyy too much candied walnut. they did have these cookies for sale at the front which looked delicious!! grabbed the coconut and corn flakes one of which they had small samples for. it's really good. [overall] not that impressed with this joint. nice, cozy, nice little patio. but the food isn't anything to go out of your way for. bruxie's is much more attractive but you won't get salad there! hehe.. i'd say if you're looking for vegetarian/ vegan.. try Thuyen Vien or any of the other vegetarian joints near by. didn't live up to the hype and likely not something i would crave or recommend. meh. if you're here and want salad.. it will do. Great Alternative Eating!!! If you are into healthy and fresh eating, then this place is perfect! I absolutely love their wraps. So simple and fresh. I had their turkey and avocado wrap and it was just delish. I left full but not heavy and full of grease and fat. Another thing worth mentioning are their salads. They have many choices and each one has a uniqueness to them. My favorite one is the thai salad. The peanut dressing was really yummy. One thing to keep in mind, their salad orders are pretty huge! It really is weird coming to a restaurant and not seeing anything with meat as in steak. But they do have some dishes that have some chicken but mostly healthy is the word here. The service is great and always friendly and willing to explain the contents of their food. Another thing I love about this place is location and the patio seating. One thing about Old Town Orange is the country feel you get. For a moment, while sitting out in the patio, you kinda forget that you are in southern california and not in Napa. This place is located on the opposite side of where I use to get breakfast. Parking is on the street and it's hard to find parking close to the restaurant on weekends so you might have to park a block or two away and walk to the restaurant. The restaurant use to be a house so the interior seems crowded with all the tables in there. The wait staff and hostess are very friendly. The times I've been here I've ordered either a cesar salad or a chicken cesar wrap. Both items were yummy. The salads are huge and it's best if you order and share with someone else. It's pretty big so expect to eat a lot when you come here. It came with a pickle, pasta salad and what seemed like homemade balsamic vinegar. The sandwich itself was good, it's on a french roll (although some of it was soggy) the rest, like the edges, were crispy and had a good buttery taste. They give you a lot of chicken and pack on the cheese. I did take some of it off. They are generous with their avocado portions. The chicken wasn't dry - it didn't taste TOO garlicky which is both good and bad but was tasty. Overall, a good sandwich. My friend got the pesto and we both agreed it was really good (although again, a ton of cheese on it) with these little pita breads with cheese on them. SERVICE - I only mention this because we had at least 5 different people come up and ask us if we were doing okay or refilling our water etc. so it was really nice. On our recent trip to the Anaheim, we came across the cutest area of Old Town Orange County. It was Late afternoon on a Saturday and we were famished. I had a vegetarian with me and Yelp helped us find Ruabegorz. It was an absolutely beautiful day so we decided to sit in the outside patio area. We started off with the Nachos. I regret not taking a picture of them because they were really good. We were just so hungry, I didn't realize I forgot to snap a pic until they were destroyed. After ordering the appetizer, our waitress came back to take our food orders. When my friend asked her what came on the Cobb salad (on the menu it just read VEGGIES -- and he is a picky eater) She said "uhh I don't know! There are too many salads"... seriously? that's how you answer that? She remembered 2 of the "veggies" and he didn't want either of them on the salad. I ordered the full size avocado and chicken salad with Balsamic dressing. Their salads are ginormous!! My salad wasn't amazing but it was good. My friend ended up getting the Baby Cobb and after he picked out the mushrooms he enjoyed it. My vegetarian pal ordered the Latino veggie burger with a side of vegetarian chili. He ate the whole thing and didn't bother giving me a bite. It did look yummy. We also ordered the Walnut Kiss the Chicken Salad Sandwich. I love chicken salad and I love squaw bread, and after reading the reviews about this particular sandwich I was expecting heaven in my mouth. Not the case. It was dry and pretty sad. It is a Friday night. I rushed to get to Rutabegorz before 8pm. I was really looking forward to a meal after a long day of work. My family and I sat down. We were waiting to be served and could see that they had more than a few people eating and chatting. I stated that they have hours till 8 pm and other people are being served and they refused service because they were slow. I will not be coming back to this location again. You just lost a long term customer. I will be spreading the word to go somewhere else for how rude we were treated when we we weren't expecting anything above and beyond normal curtesy and being open your posted hours. read more

This restaurant serves sandwich, salads, wraps, and bowls. This is a house that was turned into a restaurant so both interior and exterior looks just like it plus the added tables and chairs. It has a more homey feel. But patio was a bit cramped because of this. Was not able to check the whole menu. My girlfriends took me here for my birthday. They serve cocktails and beer too. We came a little after 630pm. They do have happy hour. Beer is $3 and specialty drinks are $7. Now for the food. For appetizers we ordered the Hummus and you have choices of pita bread, chips, or veggie sticks, we chose pita. Taste was your regular hummus, nothing special. I ordered the Falafel wrap, and my two other friends ordered the Curry bowl and Thai bowl respectively. The one with the Curry bowl expected meat, looked at the menu again, no meat. The Thai bowl? no shrimp, looked back at the menu, does not say shrimp. The menu had a lot of healthy choices. Our bad, it was dark in the patio, both of my friends did not see the menu well. I ordered a margarita, and friend 1 ordered a Sangria, these were mediocre also. Our server was prompt and kind, and he waited on us well. Oh and the parking! It was a Thursday night.
