Stopped here on a whim with some friends while in town for the 2014 Cotton Bowl. I ordered 3 tacos: the regular brisket, the pulled pork, and the regular ground beef. I was very pleased with all 3, and the service and price couldn't be beat. I also sampled the fresh chips, salsa, and queso, and all I can say is YUM. We were all tempted to return the next day for another meal (we opted not to, lol). Definitely worth a visit if you come across one of their locations. read more

We decided to give this a try after seeing the full parking lot day after day. We went at 7:00 p.m. on a Saturday and had no trouble finding a seat, experienced no unusual wait time, and loved the #5, #7 and #9s we got. I found the verde salsa deliciously tangy if a little mild, the chips were perfectly crunchy and salty. For $2 apiece, these tacos are a steal. As has been noted elsewhere, these are Mex-Mex tacos, not Tex-Mex. They're not greasy hangover cures; they're little flavor bombs. Similar to Urban Taco, in a much more casual atmosphere. Love having a taco place in our 'hood. It's becoming a family tradition to stop here for breakfast tacos on the way to the pool on Saturday mornings. The bacon, egg and cheese on a corn tortilla my favorite. My husband loves the one with chorizo. This place works for breakfast, but it's not my favorite for lunch or dinner. Alright... this place is a margarita mecca for SMU kids. I spent a lot of dough in recent years on their killer $5 margaritas, of which you can sneak the awesome cup it comes in home, if you're good. Their chips/salsa, tacos, and drinks are all cheap, and they're good for what they are. Obviously the food doesn't even rank in the charts of Mi Co, Gloria's, etc., but it's right by campus, has a fabulous patio, and just an overall fun vibe. The main woman making the tacos in the kitchen today wasn't wearing gloves. She touched every piece of each taco, from the tortillas to the meat to the cheese, even the fish from the fryer, with her bare hands. She would touch the food, touch the serving utensils, then wipe her hands on her shirt/pants and then go back to touching food. Absolutely disgusting. This place has ahmazing tacos! The only reason I'm giving this place 4 stars is due to the terrible parking set up. There has to be no more than 17 spaces to park and during lunch time it can get full quickly. So far I've been lucky every time I get here that someone is leaving, if the lot is full I would otherwise just keep driving past the full lot. Tacos are decently priced at approx $2.50 a piece, more of a cantina style taco which I love! Flavor is great and staff is very friendly. Overall if you're a fan of tacos it's a must try! Save ur money and don't buy the Elote (corn in a cup). although flavorful the size of the cup was just too small get another taco instead. All varieties are recommended from the breakfast tacos (get everything - potato, egg, meat, cheese - and add salsa and crema) to the brisket, fish, vegetarian, pork, shrimp, Picadillo, and the quesadillas. Went last night for the second time in about a month. The first time I was impressed with the freshness, taste, and value. They have a pretty good patio area. Not much scenery around, but it's nice to be outside when it's cooling off in the city. First time we ordered a brisket, grilled fish, picadillo (ground beef/potato), and pork. Each one was good, except the fish, which was mediocre at best. We also ordered chips and queso, which was edible, but barely. It looked like it had been in the warmer all day and was kind of thick and dried out. Last night was a different story. We didn't get queso because of our first experience, but it looked better when I saw someone else eating it. The tacos were not so good. We ordered brisket, pork, chicken, and a rusty taco, which is a heavily seasoned pork. All of the tacos had grease and liquid just pouring out of them. I had to squeeze them out so they wouldn't drain all over my shirt. The chicken was flat out disgusting. It tasted funky, like mint, but not good mint. The brisket and pork looked and tasted identical and it was just bland. Our first visit they didn't put the Cotija cheese on any of our tacos, this time they put it on all of them. I'm not a fan of this stuff. It's a crumbled white strong cheese kind of like parmasan I guess... I'm so disappointed because we thought we found a cool new place with a good patio and now I don't plan on going back. Basically I think this place is inconsistent. Went here for breakfast and took my son with me. The service was friendly from the start and the place has a cool vibe to it. Neat old gas station feel to it. Very unique and original. My son and I ordered 4 total tacos and some chips and salsa. All of the food was great. The standouts were the jalapeno sausage breakfast taco and the bacon and egg taco. Also, the salsa was outstanding. Just like I enjoy it, no chunks and very flavorful. My son got a kick out of the soda machine. Their tacos are delicious! I like the brisket and the potato/egg/cheese tacos. Salsa verde is my jam. They're a good lunch spot, as they are super fast and cheap. If you're not feeling super hungry, go for one taco and split the queso with someone (it's worth it). Similar to fuzzy's in terms of setup, but the quality is so much better. Plus, they use real tequila in their margaritas--which are another must try. With cheap margs and large space, this is also a great place for a happy hour group after work. It was built in an old mechanics garage, and they kept with the look, so the roll up doors are really cool in the spring and summer. We hadn't been in in about a year since the last time we had been in we were not impressed. Well let's just say it is possible for a place to get even worse. We got our food to go. We went around 3:30 when there wasn't too many people there (there was 4 others to be exact) so it shouldn't have taken long to get our order, but it actually took about 15 minutes to get 6 tacos to go. I got 2 brisket tacos and a steak taco. I ate one brisket taco and felt like vomiting. It was sooooo greasy and gross. The steak taco was so spicy my mouth was burning after eating it. I couldn't force myself to eat the other brisket taco because I was grossed out from eating the first one. My husband was barely able to force down his tacos and forced down my other one just so that we didn't waste our money, but he said we will definitely not be going back there again. This used to be one of our favorite places to eat and now we won't ever be going back. Don't waste your money. If you want to throw away $20+ there is way better things you can waste it on. Next time we will spend a few extra dollars and go to Velvet Taco. read more

Many many people who have reviewed rusty taco has slightly negative opinions. i go here every saturday morning. i will say it is totally worth it and i love it. cute that it's a gas station and they put out some killer breakfast tacos. their day time tacos leave a little to the imagination. as one friend put it "they are basically tacos with cilantro in them" The Good: i am addicted to the chorizo breakfast taco. insanely good (don't get the jalapeno, it's like a hotdog) funny that it used to be a tire place or whatever, good seating, nice outdoor space, only $2 The Bad: portions are small (what do you expect for $2)...people like to complain about this, but i think they are comparable to other places in town (looking at you fuel city) in terms of taco size. Day time tacos aren't great (what do you expect for $2?) and use a lot of feta and cilantro to top things off to the point at which you can't even really taste the meat. Bottom line: try it, it's a fun place. go before 11 and grab a chorizo breakfast taco with their awesome green salsa. you wont regret it. try after 11 at your own risk... 4 stars - one of my favorites (i go weekly, say hello if you are there on a Saturday morning around 8am and see a guy with 2 dogs!) but i wouldn't cry myself to sleep if it closed. read more

Okay I went about 3 weeks ago, picked up breakfast for a co worker's birthday. When I got to work - the order was NOT what I ordered, but okay I let it go. I went back again today, ordered 1 chirizo & egg taco, and a side of chips and salsa. Now first of all the black girl that works the register is NOT the friendliest, and to add to that there was a 30 minute wait but she FAILED to tell me that. I would have never waited 30 minutes in the morning (on my way to work may I add) for 1 taco. Apparently someone came in and placed a VERY large order, like 100 tacos so there was a long wait - my ONLY problem with that is you have to let people know if there is a 30 minute late - clearly at 7:30 AM we are all headed to work. You have to know that. So when I asked about how much longer is my food going to be (after waiting for 20 minutes) she points to another person cooking and making the food and says - ask THEM! At this point I still did not know there was a 30 minute wait. So the lady (who looked like she was a manager) said to me, well maam we have a large order and there is a 30 minute wait. I said well I didn't know that, she took my order and said my food will be ready in a few minutes. So the manager got very impatient and asked what I'd ordered? I told her and she rudely told the guy fixing the taco's to make her 1 chirizo & egg taco. So she gathered my food, bagged it up and I left. Got back to work - OMG - normally their salsa is the BEST - but today it was the NASTIEST salsa I've ever tasted in my life. It has absolutely NO flavor to it. It's like they just threw some old salsa in a cup and gave it to me, and the chips are normally warm and fresh - well they weren't today. I have just decided that I'm not going back to this place anymore, Mostly due to the horrible customer service. May 19, 2015 ~ TEX MEX IT AIN'T ~~~ NO Real Texan would call this Mexican Food! The prices are too high for the quality of food and the portions are small. Food was way too salty and they used too much black pepper. The choices are limited too, you either do it with or without - no options!!! This is Texas ... they did not have 'Sweet Tea'~ drinks are $2.00 served in a 24 ounce paper cup (.083 cents an ounce people) ... this is not TEX MEX ~~ have been to Mexico, have been to California not like those places either ... heck they are just putting meat in a tortilla and calling it a taco .... tacos do not have cole slaw in it .... when you ask them to HOLD the onions they are not careful enough to make sure to keep them out. They are skippy with chips even - come on people chips???? The parking lot is a disaster, the seating is like a school cafeteria .... heard 'em in and heard 'em out! Yes, their tacos are very good, but their kitchen can't seem to get it together. I'm one to normally give places multiple chances to redeem themselves, but this place is 0 for 3. Front staff is very friendly, but every time we've been there (to-go each time), our order is totally screwed up. Meats are never labelled correctly, have been missing tacos all-together. The worst was a friend who went with us and had food allergies. He was a few bites in when he realized what was going on and luckily stopped before any harm was done. The absolute worse taco place in dallas! I wanted so badly to love this place after my friends suggested it, but it has gone way down hill. It is so bad my friend apologies all weekend for suggesting such a terrible experience. We called in for a larger order (about 26 tacos, some would say this isn't that large) to give R taco plenty of time to prepare. After 45 min we went to R taco to pick up the tacos to find out not everything was ready, even though in the phone they estimated the tacos would be ready in less than 30 min. So about 10 min later we get the tacos...so excited to eat as we were very hungry we started to slip out the tacos, just to realize nothing was labeled....should of been a sign to go back and start over, but so we start the process of take one taco at a time and split it out in our group, just to realize 6 tacos are missing...if I make a near 25% mistake at work I would have been fired!?!?!? So I call back in and R tacos response was ok we can get you more tacos if you come in they will be ready when you get here. We get to R taco just to realize no one knows what was just agreed on the phone, as if I called some other place or talked to someone not working there. After 5 min of back and forth someone realized what I was talking about and they ask for my receipt. Then they agree on the mistake and give me a bag that the cook and front lady argued was not mine...she tries to give me free chips/queen and a drink (which is now costing R taco more money, makes no sense) and a bag that the cook said was not mine. I take the bag and In front of them show how each taco is the wrong taco. At this point this location has now made a 12 taco mistake along with giving up queso, chips and a drink. If I owned the location I would not be ok with this lose. So then what appears to be the manager, goes and ask me for the 3rd time what tacos I was missing. Again I don't understand the complexity with asking for a taco and then getting the taco you ask for. So I tell them again which ones are missing and then this manager makes them himself. So now R taco has made 6 more tacos. So what started as a 6 taco mistake cost 18 tacos, chips, queso and a drink. Once we get home so that 2 people can now eat their 6 missing tacos, just to see there was basically nothing in the tacos?!?!?!? So in conclusion this place not only has terrible customer service, they have terrible tacos. AVOID AT ALL COST...even the fast food chains give you more filling then this. I have mixed feelings about R Taco. They're close by where I frequent and there's usually not a line as long as Torchy's. Tacos are usually pretty tasty and their chips are on point. They also have a plethora of booze choices to boot. However, I do feel like some of the folks at R Taco are a lot more aloof and standoffish. I get it, selling tacos probably isn't on the top of your "fun things to do" list. At least mask that while you're serving because it's painfully obvious that you're having a shitty day. read more
