Good food. Not great service. I ordered 2 tacos (bean taco and a pork taco) to-go and waited about 40 minutes. In that time, I watched several people who seemed to have come in after me receive their orders. The girl who was right before me inquired about her order, one of the cooks took her receipt and started working on it immediately. I waited another 10 minutes or so after she received her food then inquired about mine. I was told I had 3 orders ahead of me and waited. I contemplated getting my money back, but I'd already sunk over 30 minutes. The black bean taco was really good, and the pork was good. I would probably try them again, but I'm not sure I would come back to this location. Perhaps it was an off day and some rhyme or reason for how the orders were delivered? read more

Service and quality has declined significantly. I waited 40 minutes today after church for my meal. When my order was called, it was short one taco and the rest of the order was wrong. 5 minutes later, the other taco was finally ready but I couldn't get to the counter because of the herd of other customers also waiting for their food. I really wanted to like this place. But I was really disappointed. I was craving fish tacos and was suggested Rusty's. We were greeted by friendly staff. We ordered our food, sat down and waited for our food. The decor was really nice and I thought it would be a cool hangout. We got our tacos and they looked small but I was thinking "I'm sure they are worth it though". Um not so much. The tacos were so bland. No taste. We had only gotten a couple and we were still hungry. We contemplated if we should order more but we were so disappointed that we just decided to get fast food to fill us up. I'm not sure if it was a fluke but I don't think I will go back. I always try a place 2-3 times before passing judgment but in this case I'm not really interested in seeing if it was a mistake. Sorry Rusty's. :( read more

Ok where do I begin? This place SUCKS! The name throws me off to start, it's not a very good name in my opinion. I don't want the word "rust" anywhere near my food. My wife and I went there for lunch and just missed their breakfast tacos but if their lunch tacos are any indicator of the same thing, then NO, I won't return. The Tacos were dry and had no real good flavor. We had the 4 kinds of tacos, 2 brisket, 1fried chicken, and 1 pork. Nothing about them screemed WOW to us. Just because you have real Mexicans cooking doesn't mean it's going to be a good taco? And the pricing? 2$ per taco, Come on. If your pricing them like that at least make the portions bigger. Another issue I have with them has to do with the clientel. Let me just say that I don't understand why "White People" flock to these places thinking they have just discovered something amazing, when just down the street not very far is a place called "insurgentes" that have better food, more authentic mexican food. All you will see there is pure Mexican people cooking and eating there. And that's what I determine a real good mexican taqueria. Rusty Taco, interesting name, do yourself a favor and don't look that up on Urban Dictionary before you go eat there because it might make you not want to try it. I went here for lunch at about 12:00p on the day after it opened and it was packed. Parking was a biatch, they have a lot in back and a few spots in front right off Greenville but they were both full and it took a while to find an open one. Once inside the line wrapped around the counter to the back of the restaurant, it was moving at decent pace but it still took about 15 minutes order. Once I got to the counter there was a piece of paper there notifying everyone that they did not have any more of the #6 or #9 tacos which was a disappointment because the #9 is the signature taco. I ended up ordering a #1 Picadillo, #2 Roasted Pork and a #7 Fish and asked for it grilled. After I had paid, another employee come up to the cashier and told her that the grilled fish would take 30 minutes so I switched it to fried. The wait for the food took about another 15-20 minutes and when they bring it out it can be hard to hear them call your name because it is pretty loud, especially when they have the music cranked up to 11 and the lady was basically whispering your name, why don't they have a PA system? Anyway, the food was there and it was time to eat so I started with the fried fish taco. It was not that great, the fish didn't have a great flavor, the red cabbage didn't add much and the sauce was OK, the homemade tortilla was good though. On to the roasted pork, it was decent but still didn't have a lot of flavor so I added some red sauce which was runny and lacking in spice. The picadillo was the best of the three, the meat had a good flavor and the potatoes and cilantro added even more, I also put some green sauce on there and it was good too. Overall, it was OK, not really good or great, but I think most of this has to do with the fact that it just opened. Once they get down how much food they will need per day and are able to keep the tacos rolling out, it should improve. I will not be abandoning my favorite gas station tacos but I think that in the long run Rusty Taco should be a good addition to the Greenville area. read more

Yes, they just opened, so they're obviously going to still be working some of the kinks out. . .that's why I'm ignoring the urge to give them one star at the moment. When we got there the line was around the restaurant to order and they only had one guy working the register. Why you would only have one person working a register at 12:30 on a Saturday afternoon is beyond me. Luckily after the line was stagnant for a good 10 minutes, another girl came out and took over the other register. Five minutes later I was at the front placing my order. I ordered four tacos (chicken, roasted pork, rusty taco and grilled fish) and two coronas. After paying the $16 ($2 per taco, $3.50 per beer) I was told my meal would be out in 30 minutes. Fortunately, they overestimate how long you'll wait. After 10 minutes, my food was in front of me and peace was restored. Sadly, the food just wasn't that great. Dry was the name of the game. I'm OK with the tacos not being as greasy as other taco spots in town, but honestly everything I ordered was overcooked and under seasoned. The chicken was stringy and too salty. The grilled fish taco tasted like it was just seasoned briefly with salt and pepper. Like the chicken, it was overcooked to the point of being dry and chewy. The sauce was the same mayo-based sauce everyone puts on their fish tacos. The cabbage even tasted like it had been sitting out for a little too long and had gone a touch leathery. The grilled pork taco was chewy and the addition of the salsa on the table was the only thing that kept it somewhat hydrated. However, the big disappointment was the signature Rusty Taco - an anchiote pork taco with charred pineapple. Once again, limited flavor and everything was overcooked. The pineapple was dry and practically devoid of any flavor. I felt bad having to add salsa to add flavor to a signature taco, but I really didn't have much of an option. My tablemate said it best when he said 'The Corona was the highlight of the meal.' I'm willing to call this meal a result of too much hype around a brand new spot. I'll give Rusty Taco a second chance in a month or so after the initial buzz wears off - I wish them the best and hope that they get the kinks worked out sooner rather than later. read more

Okay. I'm revising my former "okay, not awesome" stance on Rusty Taco. This is because I cannot even get through one of their vegetarian tacos anymore. The wet, weird chunks of queso fresco really gross me out, but if I don't order the cheese, all I can taste is cilantro and pepper. Not good. Even their queso has begun to burn my tastebuds off with cilantro and spice flavor, instead of delicious melting cheese. I still like the chips, but that's about it. read more

BEWARE! I ordered a taco and clearly told them I wanted a corn tortilla due to an intolerance to wheat. It looked suspious however I took a bite...and quick asked the cashier is this corn and she said no they are on wheat.....quickly I spit it out and rinsed my mouth out with water and then was informed that it was my fault as I had not asked for corn....NO APOLOGY... they refilled the order and I had my taco which fortunately wasnt that good anyway - which will make never going back there not a problem read more

My stomach is a little sad today. It's sad that I fed it disappointing food when I could have just gone to a standard place that I knew it would like. I have to say the best thing about my visit to Rusty Taco was the fact that the tacos were only $2 a piece. I just hope my stomach won't get back at me before the day is over. So here's what I learned during my lunch visit: - Never eat the #9 Rusty Taco in your car. First off, it just oozes grease (orange & red grease at that). It's the kind that will stain your khaki pants (where is a Tide stick when you need one?!?!). It's the kind that I'm going to have to remember for a while because a piece of the pork fell between my seats and I'm unable to get to it. How about we change this to never eat the #9 Rusty Taco at all. The first piece of pork I bit into was chewy and fatty. I tossed that piece aside and took another bite. The next piece was also chewy and fatty. On top of that, the flavors were severely lacking in general. At the halfway mark, I gave up and tossed it. - The #8 Baja Shrimp Taco would have been great if they didn't cover it with so much of that cream sauce. There is potential there with this one. - The #5 Brisket Taco was probably the best of the bunch, but it was a somewhat on the dry side. Visually, it looked great with the toppings of onion and cilantro. I just wish the meat would have been a little better. - The #1 Picadillo Taco was greasy (not as much as the Rusty Taco) and lacking in flavor. If you order this one, just remember that salsa will be your friend. I doubt I'll return for lunch again. I would be willing to give them a try for breakfast since D Magazine mentioned their breakfast tacos in their recent issue. We'll have to see how that goes. read more

Rusty! Why are your portion sizes so inconsistent, particularly on things that aren't that expensive (chicken). Both the fried chicken and regular chicken taco had comically small portions of meat. Look, I'd gladly pay a little more for meat, and some of your other tacos seem to be ok - the Baja shrimp, for example. A person should be able to fill up on 3 of your tacos, or else walk over to Freebird's/Chipotle where they can for the same price. read more

It took a while before I finally made it here, but I'm glad I did. After pulling it up on Yelp to write this review though, i was a little surprised to see it only has 3 stars. Am I looking through rose-colored lenses because I visited in Spring, when it wasn't unbearably hot and when I was able to find an open table and be served in less than 10 min? Maybe. But that's okay. I really like Rusty Taco because the selection and quality of taco goes beyond what you get at a place like Fuel City, but they're not nearly the same price point that you would see at a place like Torchy's. I love the recent trend in Dallas of turning old garages into restaurants -- Bolsa and Jack's Backyard have done it in Oak Cliff, Gloria's original location is set to soon be moved to an old fire station (kinda like a garage), and Russel "Rusty" Fenton (co-creator of Uncle Julio's) took over a brake shop last April with Rusty Taco on Greenville Avenue. Gone now is the Just Brakes that used to reside across the street from Parkit Markit (great place to pick up a keg or two when you're having one of those weekends), and in its place is a swanky, hipster taco joint with plenty of patio space for Saturday afternoon fun and a decent selection of gourmet tacos. P2 and I dropped by Rusty last week with the sole intention of picking up some grub and taking it home to finish out the work day, but when we pulled up on a beautiful, sunny afternoon and saw the old garage doors open, revealing the lines of table and chairs inside, we couldn't help but order our food ($2 per taco), beer and take a seat to eat there. The Rusty Taco building is pretty impressive -- with a few of the original (I think) rolling garage doors still installed, it's the perfect place to spend an afternoon with friends, and there's plenty of seating for 50 or so of your nearest and dearest. Our tacos came out pretty quickly, but it was late afternoon, so I have no idea what it would be like during lunch rush hour. I ordered the Rusty Taco, with Achiote pork, charred pineapple, cilantro and white onions, and the Brisket Taco, with shredded brisket meat grilled red onions and and Cotija cheese. The Rusty Taco was slightly disappointing - unlike the traditional Al Pastor taco, the pineapple and the achiote spices felt mismatched on this dish, making the taco more questionable than enjoyable for me. The pork was cooked well, tender and juicy, but the seasoning just threw me off too much to enjoy it. The brisket meat was very good, however so much Cotija cheese was piled on and was so incredibly strong that I had to knock a bit off just to taste the meat. Either a lighter sprinkling or no cheese at all would have suited me just fine. The corn tortillas, while not doubled up for these tacos, held up pretty well against their contents and were plenty of tasty without being greasy. Their tomatillo sauce, which I spread over both my tacos, was yummy, if not just a little on the sour side (something I was warned about when I asked about the sauces). Basically Rusty Taco is a good place to stop at after work for a few beers, a couple of brisket tacos and an hour or so of decent people watching. The patio is beyond terrific and while their menu selection isn't insane, everyone, including the vegetarians, is bound to find something they like. read more

You might be wary of a restaurant that is located in an old gas station whose last incarnation was a brake shop. However, Rusty Taco is a fine upgrade to such a lousy pedigree. The remodel is first rate considering what they started with. We were thrilled to find a new restaurant within walking distance of our home. Best yet, we like the food and the casual atmosphere. There is no wait service; instead you order at the counter then wait for your name to be called. The tacos - I like them and my wife, who has no tolerance for blandness, likes them as well. At $2 you might not expect much but what is there is quite tasty. I have enjoyed the roasted pork, the beef fajita, the brisket (my personal favorite), the fish, and the Rusty Taco (pork with pineapple - yummy). There is a decent selection of beer - Negra Modelo, Corona, Dos XX, Tecate, Shiner Bock and Sierra Nevada as well as your standard light lagers - and you pick your own from a big ice filled cooler. Save yourself the disappointment and skip the margarita. It's not great and it's the most expensive item on the menu. The outdoor seating is good but when summer kicks into high gear it's going to be crowded inside. One thing that could be better - how about a separate cash register just for ordering drinks - better yet, just set up a big icy tub outside. It's a bit of a beating having to queue up in a long line just grab another beer. More than once I have contemplated dashing across University to the Parkit-Market to pick up a six pack for the table. We went back for the breakfast tacos and we enjoyed them as well. The coffee - not so much. I would gladly pay more for better coffee. While parking is available the number of spaces is limited. You may have to park on University and risk your life trying to get out of your car without getting a door ripped off its hinges by someone racing to beat the light at Greenville. Will I be back? I already have. When you're in the mood for something tasty it's a great place to meet your friends and hang out for while. read more

I placed a to go order over the phone for 5 tacos, and when I arrived I waited a further 10 minutes. People who ordered at the register when they arrived received their orders within minutes, but I waited 10. I also paid extra to add avocado to my tacos, but when I opened them at home, there was not one single avocado, even though it was noted on my receipt. As a busy professional, I pick up food quite a bit for dinner, and it's very frustrating to see restaurants so disorganized and lacking in customer service. I really wanted to like you, especially because you were so easy on the eyes but after sitting down and tasting what you had to offer, I have decided that you were all wrong for me. Worth the money? Sure. Worth the Trip? No. Went with a few friends pre-movie. Sure, it's kitchy and fun like everyone expects from a Greenville Ave. establishment. I should have looked at the size of the tacos before ordering - Big D can eat and two tacos didn't do it for me. Sure, I could have gone back for more, but it wasn't worth the wait in line, or really my time. Glad I tried it, but probably won't be back unless I lose my wallet and only have $2 on me. Hard to believe they get everything so wrong here. Supremely AVERAGE tacos, watery salsa, and noisy atmosphere. Shrimp tacos were the best of the several we tried. Brisket tacos ok. Fajitas unacceptably rubbery and flavorless. Picadillo tacos were greasy and miserable looking. Like it ior not, Fuel City is the standard for great tacos, and this place is substandard to be sure. Cool concept, but they need to nail down their execution. Went for both breakfast and lunch today. For breakfast.... Had a variety of the egg and bacon/chorizo/sausage options in both corn and flour tortillas. The menu states "homemade tortillas". Flour were great. Corn, not so much. Tasted like they came straight out of the jumbo pack of bland and flavorless Mission tortillas from Tom Thumb. Bacon/Egg/Cheddar was on flour was good. The others were OK and the not so good corn tortillas really took away from the fillings. For lunch... Sampled a bunch of the meats, fish and shrimp options -- again on both corn and flour. Fish and shrimp were good. The carnitas and brsiket were really dry. Not living up to the typical "slow roasted and tender" expectation for these two options. Also, they must have run out of their homemade flour tortillas and switched to the Mission variety. Really bad. Like the concept, but really hope they get kinks worked out soon. I enjoyed this spot. I did feel a little rushed while sitting inside. To my surprise, others were out on the patio braving the heat and the extra spicy, salsa verde. One cool chick behind the counter said it best, " it has a kick that sticks,". it was some good stuff. The tacos, I tried the ground beef and the Rusty taco it was OK, i liked the beef one best. Taco places are popping up everywhere in Dallas, and I love it! I highly encourage you chipotle people to try some new places. Rusty Taco has great breakfast tacos, i like the egg and jalapeno sausage. There are about 3 sauces you can add to your tacos. The chips and salsa and queso are def worth getting. The queso at Torcy's is the best so there is no comparison. The times I have been I have gotten the shrimp taco, brisket (not as good as Mannys) taco, and fish taco. The shrimp taco was my favorite! Rusty Taco has plenty of outside seating and garage door covers. Tin decor on the inside and Pat Green tunes playing. I love how this restaurant has a Austin vibe to it. I used to work a few doors down and would get their breakfast tacos. After eating them, without fail, I would always get sick. They are very greasy and just not worth the hype. My first review for Rusty Taco got "filtered". I thought that was junk, so I removed my original post and decided to try again with this review. I stopped by once for lunch and once for breakfast the first week they opened. Both times the tacos came out cold! and the wait time for the food was silly 15-20 minutes. Very disappointing. I think even if the tacos were hot they still would not be to great. So I went back a third time the afternoon of 20-April-2010. I was leery but went with a friend who had never been. We ordered 5 tacos total. One #1, Two #5's, One #7 & One #8. It was 2:00PM and there was no line. It took half an hour to get the tacos to the table. Seriously 30 minutes!!! When they arrived the tacos were cold. Yeah cold fish and rubbery shrimp not too appetizing. When I mentioned the wait and the cold food to the staff there was no explanation or apology. I won't be back any time soon. It is a real shame, the location has real potential, Rusty needs to work on Fresh, Hot & Fast to make a go at it.... read more

The concept is great but the tacos and chips are sub par. Been to Rusty's twice and it was not very good , except for the beer. For 2 dollars you should get a little more than a silver of overcooked meat and vegetable choices. The salsas are good .It would also help if kitchen crew where aware that people can see and should keep their hands away from hair and face. The Baja Shrimp tacos are my favorite but the fish tacos are weird in texture and flavor but still edible.

The store front used to be a Just Brakes garage. About the only kick I get out of this place is eating literally on the exact same spot where I once had the brakes on my '66 Ford Mustang fixed. While their tacos aren't bad, they are bland with very little taste. The chips and salsa are nothing to write home about either. The service is always nice and laid-back, but we never seem to get out of there for less than $25-30 for the two of us, so I don' t think Rusty Taco is all that affordable. And finally, perhaps it's just me, but I really don't find it very comfortable place; the plastic chairs inside and wooden benches and picnic tables outside are hard and not easy to sit in for long periods of time. I don't care for it and won't go back unless forced to by my fiancee. read more

I had a bacon egg and cheese, and a potato egg and cheese. Both were good, but the salsa was great! Bacon was cooked to perfection, too.
