Yesterday evening, Josh G. and I headed to Rustic Root to check this place out, as it was on both of our Yelp bookmarks as a new place to try. What proceeded was an exceptional meal full of unique flavors and fresh quality. We enjoyed everything from the ambiance to the service and the food, and so I easily give this new restaurant 5 stars.
When we arrived at 6:30 this Friday evening, we were greeted by the manager and hostess at the front door, who then immediately took us to our table (a line started to build around 7:00). When we sat down, we were handed one-page menus (horizontally oriented) strapped to these wooden planks. Though a small detail, it highlighted the "rustic" and organic ambiance, which was further demonstrated by the wood flooring, finished wooden tables, brick walls, iron and bronze lanterns, and chalkboard specials. Even the bathroom had a natural look, with a bamboo stand next to the sink and an iron faucet that almost looked like a pump from a well.
When it came time to order drinks, Josh G. asked about beer selections, while I asked about non-alcoholic options (as the designated driver). The server immediately recommended the pumpkin ale and said it was delicious (that she was even jealous she was on the job and couldn't drink it as well). For me, she recommended the blackberry jasmine iced tea and offered to sweeten it with natural sweetener if I wanted (I opted for the pure, unsweetened version). When she brought back our drinks, Josh certainly enjoyed the pumpkin ale, which included a cinnamon glaze along the rim of the glass. My iced tea was also rather flavorful, but I would mostly recommend it for tea drinkers (if not, you might want it sweetened).
Both of us then wanted to try a couple of appetizers: the ricotta toast and cornbread skillet. Josh G. was a big fan of the ricotta toast, which admittedly took a couple of bites to get used to (although I never did and was not a fan). The toast included a zesty orange flavor and fig jam. Personally, I seriously enjoyed the cornbread skillet. It was sweet, buttery and hot out of the oven. In fact, when I first bit into it, I noticed that there were actual corn kernels cooked into the bread. It was delicious!
For entrees, Josh G. ordered the beef burger, which came with a side of salt and vinegar fries along with a small jar of sliced pickles. Josh thought the burger was delicious, juicy and fresh, admiring the organic flavor. He also particularly enjoyed the pickles, which tasted homemade with just a slight vinegar flavor, and the fries were also a great addition to the meal. I order the chicken sandwich, which came with a side salad. I must admit that the chicken sandwich surprised me (in a good way). It included a parsley mayo, which gave the sandwich an herby flavor without being overpowering. The chicken itself was also this thick patty that was loaded with flavor, juicy and moist. It was perfect! The side salad was also fresh and came with a very mild dressing that enhanced the flavor of the quality ingredients.
Also, at some point during our meal, the manager came over and asked how everything was. Although not entirely unique, having a manager come over to check on things at a restaurant is not as common as it once was, so I certainly appreciated the gesture. I also noticed that the manager was keeping busy at all times, helping the hosts and servers throughout the evening. Hoping he keeps up the excellent work with his staff!
By the time we left, both of us were impressed with the experience we just had. Needless to say, I'm sure we'll both be back in the future.
