It's expensive, yes. But it's also the best croissant I've ever had, and that includes Paris (the one in France, not Las Vegas). My favorite item is the strada - and it's probably the best deal on the breakfast menu. I haven't had a bad item there. The coffee is a bit weak for my tastes but the pastries are so good I don't care. I just get it at Woodland instead. read more

I am a big fan of Rustic Bakery. I often get a latte here, and it is consistantly good. There croissants are just amazing, crumble in your mouth buttery goodness. Rustic is the best bakery in Marin. It's also a great lunch salad/sandwich/soup place. Favorite pastries: all of the croissants (chocolate almond, meyer lemon, ham and cheese), the wheat-free savory scone (if you're gluten-free), and the bread pudding. Favorite breads: polenta bread. As far as the foods go, it's my second favorite salad place in Marin after Blue Barn in the Town Center. Salads: Chopped salad, Caesar salad. Sandwich: Marin Melt, with Mt. Tam cheese! The other Rustic in Marin Mart / Larkspur Landing has more seating, but somehow I can always find seating here too. Service is okay to good. This is a Marin Classic. read more

Ok so I came in to get salad and ended up getting a delicious tomato sandwich and... A slice of olive oil cake...oops so much for being healthy. I tried I swear. Four stars for its small albeit balanced selections of coffee and tea, salads, soups and sandwiches. Great outdoor seating and good service, although sometimes a bit unprofessional. One star removed for the higher than peer prices. However, the quality speaks for itself. Two rather out-of-the-way locations that I know of in Corte Madera and Novato. I have been here several times and the pastries are super fresh and delicious, but their coffee is disgusting! I LOVE a strong cup of coffee, but the last 2 times that I have been (late morning), the coffee was almost undrinkable. It tasted like it had been sitting in the pot all day, blech! Even Peets brews a fresh pot every 30 minutes. For an upscale bakery with upscale prices, I expect better. read more

It's the best breakfast/lunch spot in the area, but they just increased their prices significantly. Small increases over time would have been much easier to stomach than an overnight increase from $8-9 to $11-12. Oh well, I'll probably still eat there... just not as often. Note that the massive brownies look terrific, but are not that great. Other pastry options are all superior. It can be hard to find vegetarian items here. The soups are chicken stocked based. If the quiche is vegetarian you are in luck but if you go in on a day they have added bacon, you are out of luck. They have a baguette without meat but that is one item and they can run out and won't make more. Yes there is a chickpea and avocado sandwich but unless that sounds yummy to you---didn't to me---again you are out of luck. The cheese sandwich is way too heavy with cheese so again not many options. I wish they would work on this. Then I would give it more stars. If you want pastries, you're in the right place! They have the BEST gluten-free scones! They are mixed-berry, and they have them every morning, although I recommend going early on the weekends, because they do sell out. They also do good soy lattes. As I remember from my pre-g-free days, all their other pastries are delicious as well. This is my second time eating here and it is consistently great!! I have never had such amazing yogurt and granola parfait!!! Sounds healthy and boring but my word it is the most rich amazing flavor...YUM!!! Was given a sample of the new Rustic Fog sandwich (has Humboldt Fog in it) and it was great but I already ordered the soup and cheese soup and they were high quality. But I should have ordered the quiche which I got last time because it was perfect!! I highly recommend this for breakfast lunch or anytime in between you want some super flavors in you mouth. In addition to the pure goodness of the food is the authentic beauty of the staff. There is a rare 'oompa-loompa style' honest quality about the workers not only behind the counter, but also in the kitchen. Catching a glimpse into the kitchen through the swinging door window always gives me a warm fuzzy feeling as though I am peeking into Mr. Wonka's factory. I usually don't give a whole lot of 5 star reviews, but this place earned it. My coworker wanted to treat me to lunch and said for me to pick a place. I turned to Yelp (of course) and found this place. Touted organic ingredients, so I thought we could use a good internal cleansing and decided to come here. Seating: definitely tight. Only enough table seating for about a dozen people total (two per table), but there were several seats at the counter. Of course, it felt crowded, but not crowded like a jam-packed restaurant that serves 100+ people an hour. Food: just order at the counter. Menu outside was more complete than the inside one written on a chalk board, which had their specialty items. We decided to split a chopped salad and a "Marin Melt". The salad was quite excellent, with the lettuce, hard boiled egg, bacon and blue cheese. Came with their signature flat bread, which tasted quite good and was a good replacement for croutons. The melt was probably one of the best cheese sandwiches I've ever had. The cheese is local (it mentioned Mt. Tam cheese in the description, so I hope I was on point with that) and tasted really good. Just had water to drink, but the glass dispenser it came from showed the big pieces of mint floating inside (I'm usually not a fan of mint, but the water tasted so refreshing). Before we left, I treated my coworker to their Chocolate Chunk cookies. They were flatter than a normal cookie, but the taste was excellent. There was definitely enough chocolate in each bite (my cookie had one particularly large chunk of chocolate that was oh so yummy). Was truly amazing that even with the good portion of food that we ate, we did not feel that full. The food really did taste healthy, but still full of flavor. Service: was good. There were three people in the front (one was running the counter, one was pulling double duty running the counter and helping with the food, and one was dedicated to just making the food). Saw one other come from their small kitchen who was cleaning the dishes. It was initially quiet (even with nearly all the seats filled) when we first got there, but a crowd came out of nowhere as soon as it was 12pm. There are a lot of regulars that come, as the person in charge knew a lot of them and made small talk when possible with them. I was the only other male in the place for at least 15 minutes until the rush came. Seemed like this place was a well kept secret among the local women, and now I know why. There are other items I want to try in the future. I wondered why they do not post their menu on the website. if it's just a way to make you come down there and see for yourself, then it's a good marketing trick that worked on me. So disappointed they switched their coffee and no longer use Stumptown Roasters. I came their specifically for the Stumptown, and even bought bags of it from there too. IEverything is pricey, but mostly good. The chickpea hummus veggie sandwich...it's super bland. A vegetarian that works there needs to taste it and make some changes. Clearly it wasn't created by someone who actually eats it. Pastries are good. Soups are hit or miss. I won't frequent this place anymore simply because they don't have the great coffee now. read more

This is the second time I've gotten day old products here. Once it was a baguette that was cold in the middle (clearly had been made day before and refrigerated). Today I bought croissants that were cold in the middle and clearly not fresh. They seem to have been quickly reheated to sell for today but the density and cold center gives it away. Here's the thing. The food is amazing, no doubt. The service is not. In the last 4 out of 5 visits to Rustic Bakery on Magnolia, I tried to order a sandwich on a baquette only to be told they had run out of them. We had guests coming today and I really wanted our sandwiches on a baguette (I was in before noon BTW). The girl at the counter with really short hair told me they had run out. I asked her if they had baguettes at the Marin County Mart store. She called and they did but she said I better hurry because they might run out. I asked her if she would order the sandwiches for me and she said I would have to do it myself. I told her I didn't have a phone with me, but she wouldn't call for me. THERE WAS NO ONE WAITING TO BE SERVED so I wasn't holding up the line or anything. Rustic makes their own bread. Why are they always running out? Rustic Bakery is a small local bakery that uses organic and local ingredients. My kids love the lemon pastries. I also buy their rosemary & olive oil flatbreads for my cocktail parties. These are the same flatbreads used by cowgirl creamery. A great local spot! read more

Our favorites were the cheddar scallion scone, flaky bear claw with yummy filling, and cinnamon twists. The pastries and goodies were some of the best I've ever had! Want a loaf of their whole grain bread? You'd better get there early in the day to buy it, or at least call them to ask them to reserve a loaf for you. Because it's very popular and they sell out of it quickly. Why they don't bake more of it is a question even our counter service person wondered aloud... Since they were already out of it when we arrived early one afternoon, we called the next morning to ask that one loaf be set aside for us. When we arrived, the loaf of bread was waiting for us, and the same counter service person recognized us. In addition to the loaf of bread, we also bought a baguette sandwich to bring with us on our trip to Muir Woods that afternoon. The sandwich was a nice size for two people to share and it was very good - prosciutto, arugula, and some sort of cheese. It's a hidden gem! For a hungry gal on a sunny day it really hit the spot. The soup du jour was fantastic--carrot ginger (...mmmm). It was pureed perfectly with a hint of pepper. The chicken salad sandwich was tasty. All in all, if I am in the neighborhood again, I will definitely be back for more :-). The food here is so fresh and flavorful.. Can never decide what my favorite lunch here is, but have never had anything that was not yummy. The Asian chicken salad and the egg salad sandwich are two of my current favorites. The house granola is fabulous as well as the savory cheddar and scallion scone. Friendly service too! read more

I LOVE EVERYTHING THEY BAKE AT RUSTIC. The ingredients are top notch and the emphasis on making decadent food as helathy as possible makes eating the incredible buttery croissants easy! I would go everyday if I could. Having said that, I don't go everyday because it is expensive and the coffee is not the best. As for the counter help, I have been going since it opened and the girls that are working now are trying hard. They are quiet and reserved but very respectful. I think their english is not the "best" so they are a bit intimidated by customers who can be imaptient and rude. I do think someone with more customer service should be teaching them how to deal with the volume of business and how to work together more efficiently, but if you give them a chance, you'd be pleased with their sweetness. read more
