#4 Tofu Wendale

Went here tonight for an early dinner. I've never had Bahn Mi before and was pleasantly surprised. It was very yummy! My partner got the #3 Chicken Lemongrass combo and I got the #4 tofu wendale combo and they were both great. We also got the special of the day, goyza which was good, I could've eaten so much more. My partner got the Cajun fries as a side (delish) and I got a salad (nothing special). The combos also came with canned sodas. The server was super knowledgeable and helpful when navigating the menu. We will definitely come back!

Such a perfect meal for a cold and rainy day touring IU's campus!!! My daughter is a huge fan of Pho but often can't find a vegetarian version. Rush Hour had SEVERAL options for her. The Pho was warm, comforting, and had a delicious flavor. Plenty of toppings and hot sauce made for an ideal lunch. We also shared veggie fried rice (yum) and a Vietnamese Iced Coffee. If she ends up at IU I see many meals here in our future!

Horrendous quality in 2024. Ordered the Pho and the soup was very obviously just watered down. The meatballs were actually frozen Italian meatballs from the store instead of the Vietnamese style ones you'd expected. Not even an exaggeration. They actually are. Beef was overcooked and were clumped in balls. The restaurant used to be alright before, but this is just sad now. I ordered doordash, but while I might expect less food or it being cold, the quality should at least be the same. Never ordering from this place again. Also they have severely reduced the amount of food you get. I'm not sure what changed, but dang.

A hidden gem! The pork banh mi w/ korean was so yummy and ordering at the counter & takeout was easy and fast.

I happen to really like this place. I like the Pho soup and the Thi wrap. Good price, good taste, but a little hard to park your car.

Really liked it! I really chose this place for dinner because I wanted bubble tea, and the bubble…read moretea was good but the food was the highlight. The menu is very vegetarian-friendly since you can choose tofu as a protein for most entrees, and even vegan-friendly since they have nondairy milk options for drinks and some entrees can be easily customized to be vegan (order with tofu/no meat and remove egg). I got a matcha latte with brown sugar crystal boba and the Pattaya pineapple rice. Matcha latte: The matcha was decent - it had the flavour of matcha latte mix rather than pure matcha, but it wasn't unpleasant, and it was strong. I like the brown sugar crystal boba as a topping - the flavour is very similar to brown sugar tapioca boba, but it doesn't sit as heavy. It's a different kind of chewy than tapioca, but it's close enough that it basically gives the same kind of experience as regular tapioca boba in a drink. Pattaya pineapple rice: Really good! The rice was well-seasoned and the pieces of juicy pineapple and raisins added some sweetness that contrasted very nicely with the curry-spiced rice. They have 5 spice levels (mild, medium, hot, extra hot, Thai hot). I usually went for medium heat when I lived on the west coast, but since this is the Midwest, I tried "hot" and found it had a bit of a kick, but the heat was still secondary to the other flavours, so it was the right choice for me. Very good service. The waiter was very friendly and attentive without hovering - he came by at just the right times. My drink and food came out not too long after I ordered. The place is nice. Like the other restaurants in this area, it's situated in a small house-like building. The atmosphere feels down-to-earth. There were lots of things on the menu that caught my interest, so I'll definitely be back!

Even with the springtime rush making the parking a bit of a challenge, the atmosphere inside is wonderfully inviting. I managed to snag a darling little corner for myself, and the energy was just perfect. The hospitality here is truly top-tier; both the cashier and the gentleman behind the counter are simply lovely. My waiter was beyond charming and presented a menu with an impressive array of sophisticated choices everything from Sichuan Beef Noodle Soup to Steamed Eggplant and Beef Pancakes, with most entrees beautifully priced between $15 and $20. I decided on the Beef Noodle Soup ($12), and oh my goodness it arrived in a mere ten minutes! Talk about impeccable service. The broth was divine, and the meatballs were prepared to perfection. I was so caught up in the moment that I completely forgot to snap a photo before finishing every last bite! It was an absolute triumph of a meal. The night I visited, they were very busy, with a large party in the back part; however, they didn't miss a beat, and service was as good as you would hope. The host who greeted me and brought out my order was very friendly. While I was waiting for him to get my food from the back, another staff member also came by to check that I was being helped. I ordered the fried eggplant stir-fry with tofu and the coconut ice cream. The stir-fry tasted good, but I selected spice level 3 "hot" (and the takeout container had a "3" written on it so I know they got it), yet there was not a hint of spice in the dish, not even a single chili flake. I don't know if they messed up and forgot to add the spice or what, but I was kind of let down. Taking the heat level out of the equation, it would rate it about average for American Thai food. I wasn't really impressed by the dish, but I enjoyed it (spicy is nice but not a must-have for me if there are other flavours). I liked the coconut ice cream dessert. The included banana spring rolls were helpfully packaged in foil separate from the ice cream, so I warmed them up in my oven a little, and they were very good warm. I'm pretty sure that what the menu calls "homemade coconut ice cream" was actually vanilla bean ice cream with shredded coconut on top. Which is still delicious but not what is written on the menu. Based on my single visit, I don't think this is close to the best Thai in Bloomington, but it's alright, and I might come here again because it's closer to home than the other places I like. I might have even given the food 4 stars if it had just been described differently on the menu, but the lack of spice in a dish that was supposed to be made hot plus the "homemade coconut ice cream" not being that left a little bit of a bad impression.

I happened to visit on a warmer day so I was able to see the space with the garage door open. It was golden hour and it had everything all lit up. Very beautiful. Our service was amazing, couldn't have asked for a better server. I can't remember her name but she was so detailed in her descriptions, thoughtful with her suggestions, and had the perfect amount of attentiveness. Now on to the fun parts.... Drinks were a hit! We told our server what we like and they recommended a couple options. I again can't remember the exact name of the drink but mine was a gin cocktail. I'll attach some photos for you. As for the food, every bite I took was delicious. Our table shared the fried brussel sprouts and the ginger miso salad. A very lovely way to ease into our meal on a lighter note. They split up the salad onto two plates for us, which was sweet of them. The portion was pretty good for a $12 salad. Very refreshing. Brussel sprouts were absolutely fire. Get them! Along with that, I also ordered the tempura shrimp maki roll. Inside the roll was cucumber and avocado with giant tempura shrimp right on top, drizzled in spicy mayo. The presentation was cool, a slightly deconstructed version of what I would get somewhere else. There wasn't a single bite left on the plate. I would order all three of these dishes again in a heartbeat. Perfect for a date night or special occasion, but also works for just grabbing a bite with friends. Whenever I find myself back in Indy, Modita will be on my list.

The place was busy for a Friday night, and was somewhat loud. Our waitress greeted us quickly, and was on top of things throughout the night. I started off with a ginger miso salad, based on recommendations on this page. Personally, I could have went without the $12 salad. I would have paid more like $6 for the amount of actual salad I got. The dressing was good, but nothing extraordinary. I did ask for no cucumbers- I could taste a faint taste of cucumbers on the salad, so think they just took them off after they were already placed. We split some Bao Buns. These were the highlight of the show. The pork on them was thick, the slaw was fresh, and the bao bun itself was fluffy. We split two dishes for dinner- the short rib and the chicken udon noodles. The chicken udon noodles were fantastic- packed full of flavor and tons of toppings in it. The short rib fell a little short of my expectations, but I had high expectations to begin with. We have had the short rib multiple times in the past- and normally it is a hunk of meat, similar to a roast. Now, it is strips of tiny pieces of meat with a bone attached to it. If the owner/general manager is reading this- GO BACK TO THE ROAST STYLE- the strips of meat was too much work to eat. Still packed full of great flavor though. I had the bridge to Anshun for my drink. I had never had Baiju before, but glad I tried it. It was a tangy drink that was also sweet- would say it's a must try. Overall, some changes since our last visit that weren't expected, but overall had a great evening here. Can't wait to return.

The drinks, the ramen, the dessert...we love it all, and we love spending our money at a local business. For years now, the kitchen has substituted rice for ramen for me because I have gluten intolerance. I have always asked respectfully, explained why, and said thank you, every single time. Tonight my husband and I walked down to Strangebird for dinner, ordered drinks and dinner, and I had *just* said to my husband that Strangebird has come to feel like a second home. Then the server came out and told us that the chef has decided they will no longer permit any modifications, including those that meet dietary needs. We were out on the quiet patio surrounded by other customers, so on top of being totally blindsided, it was actually pretty embarrassing, too. Folks, let me tell you how much I wish I could just eat the ramen noodles like everybody else. So much food that I love (and in some cases spent years learning to make myself) went out the window forever when my body stopped being able to handle wheat. But at Strangebird, I could still go in and enjoy the depth of flavor in every other component of a bowl of ramen. And that meant the absolute world to me. I'm heartbroken.
