Best sandwiches in Bloomington. Period. Rush Hour Station is located in the shopping plaza just across the street from Burnham Rentals on the corner of 3rd and Dunn. I went in this afternoon to give it a go. I ordered a pulled beef sandwich with herbs and vegetables (the #1). It had tender, marinated beef that was slow cooked in some kind of tangy sauce. Sriracha gives it a good kick. It was topped with shredded carrots, onions, cucumbers, bok choi, and lemongrass, and sandwiched (of course) between two slices of very fresh french baguette which was soft on the inside, but had the perfect crunch on the outside. And the price tag for this bad boy? $3.50. For an 8 inch sandwich with some of the best quality ingredients I've seen in this town. It was so good that, even though I'm scheduled for a colonoscopy in the form of a Corporations final in 18 hours, I'm taking the time to write this review. Have been back to Rush Hour Station many times since moving to Bloomington. My new favorite menu item is the Drunken Noodles. Just be warned that they are spicy! Always get good service from the owner, who is usually the person behind the counter. Great food! read more

I admire the owners for establishing a small eatery in a college town that is already flooded with mom and pop restaurants. My husband and I have eaten here several times. If you're okay with a twist to traditional recipes, you will probably enjoy the selections at this restaurant. .... I want to start off by saying I am Vietnamese ... There is nothing I want more than for Bloomington to open up a legit Vietnamese restaurant, with the perfect Pho. (A girl can dream...) Rush hour makes me mad, because it's the only Vietnamese available in town ... And it's just slacking . The Bahn mi sandwich has great flavors but not that "authentic vibe", and the "pho" is ... Let's not call it that ... Pho has everything to do with the broth ... Throwing in a beef bullion cube and calling it pho is NOT OK. I am really surprised at all of the four- and five-star ratings for this joint. Yes, I am happy that there is a place in B-town that serves Bahn Mi: after all, everyone deserves easy access to these yummy sandwiches. But RHS is plagued by an extreme case of B-town restaurant-itis: crappy presentation. If I could give 1.5 stars, I would. I realize that not every restaurant is going to place the same emphasis upon decor and ambience, and some places actually want you in and out quickly. But the inside of RHS was disgusting and totally uninviting. There were tables with gooey food caked on them, there were strange piles of stuff in random places, and the menu was so poorly arranged. The plate my Bahn Mi was served on was filthy. The underside had some mysterious residue, probably sauce from a previous meal. My sandwich had a clump (re: large wad) of rotting cilantro. It was turning brown and wilting, yet they put it on my sandwich. And the avocado was mysteriously not ripe, yet it was 50% brown/black already. I won't discuss the flavor or quality of the ingredients because I believe that all of the other violations make them moot. Maybe not everyone has had the same experience at RHS, or maybe I just picked the wrong day to be a patron. But c'mon, people! If we don't demand for our restaurants to be clean and presentable, then we will keep getting more of the same. I believe that a letter grade system needs to be employed in the kitchen inspections of Bloomington. I am sure that RHS would have gotten no higher than a C the day I ate there. Ordered food to go at 2:05 pm they close at 3, I know that because the cashier decided to inform me. Food was brought out however it was on dine in plates while we said to go. Then, they were bagged and handed to us and we left the store. Upon arriving at home, I opened my sandwich and saw that there was chicken in it however I ordered beef. I called and informed them on the phone of the mistake. They said to come by later and I could get a replacement since I was on my way to class. 15 minutes later I received a voicemail from rush hour. He calls and swears that he gave me one chicken and one beef. And that he made my sandwiches correctly. This is ironic because the other sandwich was supposed to be a wrap and it wasn't. This restaurant is my stand-by, I always come back! Consistent and delicious with extremely friendly and helpful servers. I dream of their Thai noodles and hand-made crab Rangoon. Taco Bao are unusual and yummy and surprisingly they make some of the best French fries in town which is an unexpected treat. I wish the restaurant would offer a style closer to authentic tasting Vietnamese food instead of trying for this western fusion. The pho and banh mi are just not good compared to the ones in Indianapolis, let alone Cali or Vietnam. Perhaps Americans who haven't try other viet places find these dishes palatable, but I personally have a hard time eating them after being so accustomed to the Viet style from both home and other restaurants. I've only visited once. I was pretty excited to come across Vietnamese food in Bloomington. I ordered Banh mi. Growing up it was always a comfort food, something that you just couldn't get wrong, like a BLT. One bite and and, man was I disappointed. I asked the owner if they were sure this was banh mi. They openly confessed that it was not. That they has substituted most of the meats, all of the pickled vegetables and the sauce for flavors that were more palatable to Americans. read more

One of the most poorly operated restaurants in Bloomington. The folks over at Rush Hour frequently make mistakes, by their own admission ironically, and argue when mistakes are brought to their attention. They are stingy too! The menu outside their restaurant is inaccurate and illegible. They have old prices crossed out with pencil or ballpoint pen and replaced with new ones which cannot even be read. They have have 2 or 3 different symbols denoting... something, but it doesn't say what. Different symbols on different items, (eg. *,^) which do not correspond to an actual note anywhere on the posted menu. It turns out, they all correspond to surcharges which they don't mention when one places an order either. They have 2 or 3 different phone numbers posted outside, not sure if that is just to be confusing? The manager is extremely unprofessional and despite, "5 years experience" (LOL!), believes that calling customers, "bro" and "dude" and telling them you are "too busy" to deal with them an acceptable food service management practice. He also seemed to be googling things and offering me conflicting and inconsistetnt information as he read. He even refunded the drink I didn't order out of his own pocket because it was, "too hard" to issue a proper refund at the point of sale. What a professional. Also, for the record- the pho is too sweet is nothing to write home about. Certainly not worth the hassle of patronizing this sleazy dump. Definitely don't eat here. read more

I happen to really like this place. I like the Pho soup and the Thi wrap. Good price, good taste, but a little hard to park your car.

This place had a decent sized menu, and you just order at the cash register then they bring your food over to you! It was very tasty. I tried the Vietnamese coffee, where you get to mix in sweetened condensed milk and pour it over ice. It was delicious. I would recommend this place for a quick meal! read more

I really enjoy the food, it's definitely fusion, not traditional pho/vietnamese. Although I like the vietnamese coffee it could be even better if they used a better quality coffee. Good value, yummy food, filling, etc. My biggest complaint is the customer service. The service is pretty fast and the food consistent, so that is good, but the people working there could be better at interpersonal skills. I once opened the door 30 minutes before closing and was immediately told that I it was fine if I ordered food to go but could not stay there to eat to my food! They also state on the door that kitchen closes 15 min. before restaurant closes, which I don't understand. Why don't they just have closing hours be when they want to stop cooking food? Being open until a certain time typically implies that one can go there until that time and order food... I was also yelled at, in front of the entire restaurant, because I asked whether my soup was the right order. I thought I had ordered something else (my usual order). It was promptly taken away and I received the right soup but then told, loudly, in front of everyone in the restaurant that if I did that again I would have to pay the difference. ??!!! They are also not open on weekends, closed in the afternoon and seem to change that around willy nilly. But I do love the french fries, Anger Mgt. soup, as well as the coconut version of the soup. read more

I've gone here multiple times for lunch, and today for dinner! As other reviewers have mentioned, it doesn't really look like a restaurant if you drive past, partially because it is in a little strip mall where all the store have the same color sign. Anyways, also hidden is the fact that this is a Vietnamese restaurant, complete with banh mi and pho, two of the most famous Vietnamese dishes. They aren't called that though, the banh mi is called "Asian sandwich" and the pho has various fanciful names depending on which kind you get. I tried a sandwich once, and it was so-so. I have been eating less wheat lately, so now I mostly get the massaman curry (excellent), the rice bowl deluxe (excellent), and the "Smile from the soul" soap (aka vegetarian pho- also excellent). The food is filling, but doesn't make you feel sludgy afterwards. Give it a try! read more

I brought a couple friends here for the first time today. They had the burger special, which came with a side salad, and a beef sandwich. I had the Brother Seitan special, which was fried tofu (I'd imagine seitan but tofu was in the description) with a sweet dipping sauce that had peanuts and diced cucumbers in it. The texture of the tofu was remarkable. Well-fried with a very light, tender texture inside. The sauce paired up with it deliciously. I'd say this should become a item on the menu. I was an idiot. Today I pulled the trigger, followed Alan B.'s advice and got the pulled beef sandwich. It was the tastiest sandwich I've had in a looong time and was plenty of food. Would've taken about $8 at Jimmy's to compete with the quantity. Total price at Rush Hour? $4.60. The food smokes Jimmy John's and Which Wich, the prices crush Penn Station/ Dagwood's, and the owner is super friendly. If you want a cheap and delicious lunch spot, this is it. I've branched out since then and have tried every vegan-friendly option on the menu - I'm not a fan of their miso ramen, but everything else is great.
