LOVE this place! I work in Deep Ellum, and have been trying a lot of places out. This is my favorite! The atmosphere is dark, cozy, and a little, "creepy", but in a good way! Went here around 8:00 on a Saturday. Me and my buddy shared some tacos and a chorizo and queso dip. Service was excellent. The vibe was super eclectic, diversity at every table, behind the bar and everywhere! I love this place! Probably wouldn't take young kids, but just cause it is more of an adult vibe. I have been here several times and love it. It's nice to come here after a concert and just hang out and have a small meal. Today I got a bean and cheese taco with a drink. Portions are small for the price. The drink was just right. The scene is very dark and dim, making it romantic for a date. There is a small music venue attached so sometimes you can hear the music if there is someone performing. I think you have to pay to see the performances. Picked this as our date day place because I was in search of different tequilas. They had a decent variety but only one anejo option, which I prefer. So I settled for repo. The price per shot was good. Didn't feel like my pockets were being assaulted as they usually are for tequila shots (yes I have plenty of various tequila at home but sometimes you want to go out you know). We ordered a couple bistec and a couple tinga tacos. They came out pretty quickly. They were tasty (not the best we've had but good enough). All of the servers were friendly and chatty when you wanted them to be. The vibe was cool even though there was a party of about 6 or more that were making a scene about paying the 20% automatic gratuity which is pretty normal for parties that size and it was clearly posted for all to see. The servers took the abuse from Kevin and removed it from his bill. I was hoping they told him not to ever come back but I didn't hear that. Oh well. OMG! We had a great time friday night for a music event here. Can't believe we've never stopped in here before. Ruins has such a cool vibe and the staff is amazing. This place has great customer service! The chairs are a bit small, but I appreciate that the sink and wash area are located right outside the men's and women's restrooms, you can easily see who actually washes their hands. The tacos were delicious, and my favorite was the Cabeza taco. The steamed beef made them extra juicy and flavorful. You had to get each taco individually and the walking nachos were in a store bought bag that definitely should not have costed the price that it was. I've been looking forward to eating at Ruins FOR A YEAR! I tried eating here three times, the first time I came here they told me the kitchen was closed, the second try they told me that the kitchen is closed till Thursdays. I went there last night for a concert and my friend and I got an hour beforehand to grab some food and a drink. The margarita was very good. I ordered tacos and asked for them to be on flour tortillas, and let the waitress know that I cannot eat corn (I have a minor allergy). She said it was going to be an upcharge, and that was fine. I was given the tacos and took 2 bites out of them before I realized they were on corn tortillas, not flour. Unfortunately, I didn't see our waitress for the next 40 minutes as it was obvious they were understaffed so I couldn't send them back/would feel bad doing so. I ended up eating the insides of the tacos with my fingers. Once the waitress came back to the table I made her aware of the situation, and she apologized, which I appreciated. When she charged me, the flour tortilla upcharge was still on the bill. I asked her to take it off and then she got her manager come over to help me. He took off the extra charge for the flour tortillas, but didn't really seem to care that I was served tacos incorrectly, and that I was going to be experiencing stomach pain for the next 3 days. I have been a frequent customer of Ruins for the past four years. Yesterday I took friends to dinner for great food in Deep Ellum. Unfortunately we arrived and the entire menu changed. The OG Crispy Chicken Tinga I've ordered time and time again is completely changed. Now, they only have a regular chicken taco. Their signature sauce gone, 90% of their menu gone. I came for the rum, and will return for the rum, delicious food, enticing aesthetic, and amazingly helpful staff. With only one available night for rum-tasting in Dallas, it quickly became clear that Ruins would be the place to go. I was not disappointed, The online rum list was indeed updated and just as wide and creative as promised. Additional bonus: half pours are available for the eager taster. The reviews on Yelp brought me to this place. The service was friendly and attentive. The Santa Muerte cocktail was just perfect. I'd happily order it again. The flautas were pretty good but the standout was the side of rice I ordered. It tasted homemade and like it was made with love. Really loved it. The Al pastor taco (not pictured) was ok and the birria quesadillas (El Precipicio) were good. I believe the birria here is made with goat instead of beef. The vibes inside are very different than any other Mexican restaurant. A lot of devil and Santa muerte art, hipster bar type of vibe. Come get ruined at Ruins. My favorite bar in Dallas is Armoury DE. My buddy and I were knocking a couple back there when we started chatting with a lady who was sitting at the bar. She informed us that Armoury owns a spot called Ruins and that it's a cool spot. We took her recommendation and decided to check it out ourselves! Once we arrived, I'm happy we did. It's a cool-looking bar and it was pretty packed. They have an impressive list of craft cocktails and they specialize in tequila and mezcal. This is the type of place where it takes a little while to make your drink because it's mixology at its finest. The focus on ambiance and creative drink-making that you see that Armoury is similarly reflected at Ruins. If I lived in Dallas, Ruins would definitely be on my list of spots to check out regularly! read more

Coolest bar in Deep Ellum!! The art alone is enough to wow you, but the food and drinks are phenomenal as well. I highly recommend ordering a tequila-based cocktail, and even more so a mezcal. This is the place to go if you want mezcal cocktails. I went here for dinner and drinks, but the vibe inside is so otherworldly and interesting, I'll definitely come back for brunch and happy hour. However, if you're sensitive about art or religion, this might not be the place for you ;) My only critique is the service could've been a bit better. Walking into this grungy and dark place you might think it's just cheap drinks and bar food, well you would be wrong! Not only does Ruins have an array of food and drinks, it's pretty darn good! This spot is located in Deep Ellum. I had not been here in the area in a long time. Upon walking in, there are pics of Aztec masks and skeletons. Some of them are a bit spooky, but perhaps that's the appeal. We were greeted promptly. The bar seating is chill and I had a chance to check out the lovely bar accessories and garnishes, but I'm sure I was the only one concerned with that lol. I love my aesthetics. See my pic when you get a chance. We later moved to a table. I have to say I'm taking off one star because sitting on little stools is just uncomfortable. They should definitely upgrade that part, however the bar seating is much nicer. All of my cocktails were ordered by surprise so I wasn't sure what I was getting and I still don't know what I had ..LOL...but every drink was fantastic and served up fancy. These are craft cocktails and well worth it. Oh ...ask for their version of an old fashioned . Superb ! Now the tacos...all the tacos are amazing and the portions are nice, but be prepared for the heat. Omg, they are hot! If you are not a spicy food person, I would avoid. Definitely get the boar taco and the red snapper taco. Yum! This is a great spot to hang out midday! Oh, I forgot to mention, this place has chicharrones. We were suggested this place from a bartender down the street and I am so glad she suggested it. What a cool vibe this place has. We walked in and immediately was taken back by the fun decor. So much stuff to look at. Service was awesome. There were two ladies behind the bar and both had great conversations with us. I saw they had tacos and even though I wasn't really hungry I had to try at least one. I got the pastor and my husband for the snapper. Both really good tacos. Margaritas were delicious too. Be forewarned this place is more bar than restaurant, but with that said I ordered a Bistec taco, a pobre Guey taco and a side of refried beans. The tacos were good, the beans average and the salsas served on the side were very good. No iced tea to drink so I went with water since I was driving. The place is a little difficult to find right now because of street construction so not their fault. It is very dark inside but they do offer a nice size patio seating outside. Stopped by for a couple of beers. I'm a bit surprised because it's a lovely spot, very nicely decorated, tons of menu variety, but it was rather empty/quiet inside. This can be a good or a bad thing depending on what you want from your night out. For us, it was a great respite in between a live music bar and a very noisy nightclub. This was my second visit to Ruins. The first time for me was a major disappointment with both my food and our server. This time, my wife enjoyed her food, but like me, we were unable to get a refill of our water glasses. But we decided to give the restaurant a second chance by the urging from my wife. This was almost a complete repeat of my first visit. Here is why I will veto returning a third time. Ambiance is fine for esthetic looks. But was seated next to two tables of big groups who were either trying to yell over the piped in music or had calls on their cells where they used the speaker function to everyone could hear at yell back at the person on line. There was a question as to which server was assigned to our table, so we were ignored for 15 minutes before we could stop a third server and ask which server was ours. Once we were served, our server didn't reappear again except to drop off the bill, process payment and then leave with a quick thank you. My wife had the ADELITA'S QUESA and enjoyed her meal. I ordered the S.L.P. ENCHILADAS to try something that sounded good. My meal came out about 10 minutes after my wife's order while our server brought out the meals for the table next to us that had 8 customers. When my meal was served, the enchiladas were room temperature and the salsa verde was missing. Because we didn't see our server until she brought the bill, I couldn't point out the two flaws with my meal. I will probably never eat there again since the two times I've been there, my meal was sub par at best and the service person goes AWOL once the food is dropped off. Could be that we didn't order drinks other than water so no need to ask for another round. read more

The decor in this place is wild. If ever there's a moment of silence in your group, look at the decor and the conversation erupts all over again. Dark and a bit tripy in all the right ways of course. The cocktail menu is very innovative, so be daring and try new things...... says the guy who got a Tito's, water and a splash of cranberry. I have had multiple cocktails on the list and I haven't sent one back. Or waiter was very attentive and kept an eye on us, paced everything very well so we didn't feel rushed. I stopped in at Ruins for a drink when I was walking around Deep Ellum with my brother a few weeks ago. It was a weekend afternoon, and they weren't busy yet (but it was getting busy when we left). They have a full menu of drinks and food. (I didn't try food on this visit, but the menu looks great - tacos, flautas, tortas, and more!) My cocktail was a special for Dia de los Muertos, so it's not on the regular menu. And it was great. But the regular menu has a lot of things I'd love to try - creative cocktails, including 9 types of margaritas; scorpion bowls - cocktails that serve 3; lots of beers from Central and South America; wines from Chile, Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, and Spain; and pulque!
