Like an ideal motel from the golden age of motels. You get breakfast. There are a fridge and microwave and coffee maker in your room. There is wifi. The price is great. And it is scrupulously clean. It is a five-minute walk to the Woolen Mills, if you want to go shop or tour there. It's a one-mile walk or drive to downtown. And a 10-minute drive to the casino, if that's where your business lies. The only drawback I can think of is the little heater in the room makes quite a bit of noise. Try turning it off before you go to bed. If you're a light sleeper you might still hear other rooms' heaters going on. And there are trains and traffic outside. read more

Very clean & affordable! We've never been to Pendleton except passing it on the freeway a few years ago. Didn't know this place from any other, but the reviews were good. Pictures seemed everything we require in a motel; queen size bed, refrigerator, microwave, free parking, and breakfast. Breakfast isn't really a requirement, but we'll take it if offered. We rolled in about 10 pm. It had been raining. We just wanted to be inside, dry, warm, glass of wine in hand and watching MSNBC or CNN. Quick check in (thanks to Booking.com) and we were inside a cutest room! No frills, but charming. Very clean! Sweet old charm bathroom. It kind of reminded me of my first apartment many years ago. Bed was comfortable. The only criticism is the train close by. Breakfast wasn't great, but free is free. A toasted bagel with butter and real orange juice, I was happy. read more

CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP!!! The room smelled like burnt crayons and the hallway smelled like pot! The road noise was LOUD to say the least and went on all night long! I accidently left a very nice shirt hanging on the back of the bathroom door. When I discovered it was missing the next evening I called and spoke with owner/desk clerk. He was very reluctant to discuss my situation and showed no empathy at all. I asked him to check with the cleaning personnel and never heard back from them at all! NEVER GOING TO STAY HERE AGAIN! read more

My mother and I were traveling to WA from New Orleans and wanted to our last stop to be more interesting than we had experienced in the previous days. We googled pet friendly hotels and discovered this gem. It is an older hotel, but it comes off as vintage. The rooms are so cute and comfortable! The staff was friendly. And my puppies were quite comfortable through the night. The hotel is within walking distance of the mill and downtown, which is fantastic when you're through with riding in the car. There is a train track nearby, but, for me, trains in the night added to the experience. The WiFi is better than we had in larger hotels chains, which was a pleasant surprise. This is not your run-of-the-mill chain hotel....and I am so glad it isn't. What a pleasant stay! read more

Great hotel which is really a hidden gem. Great prices and the updated rooms are quite comfortable. They still need to updated the bathrooms which are rather dated, but progress is being made. Checkin was smooth (although it was a young kid--14-16 years old). Unfortunately, he was not able to answer any questions about transportation or make any recommendations to me. Overall, we were pleased with our stay and will go back. We didn't try the breakfast but we heard good things about it. At checkout the desk was totally abandoned and nobody responded to the bell, so we just left our key and headed out. The staffing could improve, but the accommodations were good and at a reasonable price. read more

Great place to stay. Friendly and kind staff and owners. They offer complimentary coffee and breakfast bites. Most importantly the bedroom and bath were spotlessly clean. We will be returning guests when we are in town. read more

Nice little place. It's an older motel but very well maintained. Clean. It's been kept up and cared for. I'd stay next time thru town.

Great place to stay at this price point. The Lodge is well cared for and welcoming. Clean rooms and common areas. Good breakfast.

Love this place!! Super comfy beds and clean rooms. The personal touch throughout the Lodge makes it feel like home. The staff is very friendly and kind. The price was great too! I recommend you stay here. :) read more

Great place. Super clean and I'm very picky. The owners were very nice and accommodating. It was surprisingly inexpensive for the area. I wouldn't hesitate to stay here. read more

It feels like you stopped at grandmas house for a visit. Sooo cute! Decorations are amazing for a roadside hotel. Beds are comfy. Breakfast was simple cereals and bagels. We really enjoyed it here! read more

We made a trip to Colorado from Oregon, staying in several name brand hotels. On our return trip, we decided to stop early and picked the Rugged Country Lodge. By far, it was the cleanest, most comfortable and marginally cheaper than any of the other hotels we stayed at, such as Days Inn in Pocatello, ID and Antler Inn in Kemmer, WY., to name a few. We had stayed here once before several years ago and it was good, and it's a pleasure to see that it has gotten even better. They also have a continental breakfast. read more

This is the third time we've stayed and it continues to impress. The front desk attendant (may be the owner?) was very helpful, pleasant, and welcoming. The rooms are exceptionally clean, and it's an incredible value. No problems with the WiFi, and the shower had great water pressure. read more

It's a cheap motel. The bad: Room smelled like an ashtray, hallway smelled like pot, AC constantly cycled on and off, free breakfast was a bagel and coffee. The good: two rooms for the price of one at a national chain, bed was firm but comfortable, water pressure was great, good selection of pillows on the bed, no cleanliness problems...builds character. If that sounds worth it to you, I encourage you to give them a try. read more

My sister in law and brother were going to stay at this hotel. I made reservations the morning of the night they were planning on staying. They ran into car trouble and did not make the reservation. They called and said that they were stuck. I know I did not give them 24 hour notice of the cancelation. So we were charged. I called the next day to explain the situation and asked the owner nicely if he would be so kind as to not charge me for the room. I was rudely told no. Circumstances happen. They had every intention of staying there but not much you can do when your car breaks down. I booked at the Rugged Country Lodge cause I would be supporting a local business. I hope circumstances don't lead us back to Pendleton. If they do I will not stay at this place. read more

Stayed here for the jackalope jamboree, and I am so glad we did! The lodge has such a homey feel to it and the staff was more than accommodating! A quick and simple drive away from the historic district of Pendleton but still nice and quaint. The next time we visit Pendleton we will definitely be staying at the rugged country Lodge again! read more

The property owner asked me at breakfast how I slept, I said fine. He then asked me to write a review, so here it is. It was a cold and very rainy night, I was tired of camping in the rain, so i pulled in and got a room, in the basement, the main level was booked. The young man (child) who checked me in let me see the room before accepting it. At a quick glance in the dark, it looked fine. When the sun came up the next morning, it was a different story... There was no comforter on the bed, just a blanket which is fine as I don't like being hot at night. The blanket had stains on it! The towels and washcloths were stained and the shower had black mold in it. The light fixture was missing a bulb and the shower curtain was moldy. Now, the towels did smell clean and smelled of bleach, but they were stained! Come on, buy some new towels! And bleach out the shower. There is no ventilation in the bathroom, therefore, mold is going to grow. Either clean with bleach after each quest or install a vent. read more

We just needed a one night stay and it was a very relaxing place to stay. It wasn't a busy place to get into and priced was affordable. Manager was very pleasant. Nice stay over if you want a peaceful rest come here. read more

Never in my life have I had to check out of a motel early, and I've stayed at numerous hotels/motels/lodgings of varying quality. This was definitely one of the worst lodging experiences I've ever had. If you're looking for lodging in Pendleton, do yourself a favor, and pass over the Rugged Country Lodge. My wife and I arrived in Pendleton late on a Saturday night, hoping for a restful night. We almost turned around when we saw a bunch of people sitting around their sketchy RV in the parking lot, smoking cigarettes, cursing, and generally carrying on in full-on party mode. We checked-in anyway, and the front desk manager could best be described as "gruff". He apparently thought that we wanted a basement room, down a set of stairs, I believe it was room number 1. Strangely, this motel doesn't have an ice machine, you have to bring the bucket to Mr. Gruff, and he'll fill it for you? Anyway... Walls are paper thin, the guy in the room above us was just watching TV and talking on his phone, but it was enough to keep us awake. We asked him if he could keep it down a little, which he kindly did. As we were drifting off to sleep, a group of parents with about 10 kids checked into the two rooms on each side of us. Again, the walls are so thin, that a normal amount of noise from them was enough to jar us awake. My wife went to the front desk to try to get this resolved, and Mr. Gruff would not allow us to switch rooms. She requested a refund then and he flatly refused. I tried to talk with him, telling him that all we wanted was a quiet night's sleep, which apparently isn't a service the Rugged Country can provide. I again asked for a refund, to which he grumpily refused. I set the key to my room on the counter, and we drove away to get a good night sleep somewhere else. I would heartily recommend just about anywhere besides the Rugged Country Lodge. What a dump! read more

What a wonderful surprise this stay was. Twice a year we come to Pendleton for the poker tournaments hosted at the casino. Usually we stay at the casino for convenience. We waited to long to book and they were sold out. The Country Lodge was kind, clean and comfortable. Our room had a refrigerator and microwave. Bed was comfortable and bathroom clean. Clean is so important to me when staying somewhere other than home. Each morning I enjoyed coffees and fruit from the Rooster Room downstairs. A spread of cold breakfast options were included in the reasonable nightly cost. Looking for somewhere on a budget? This place is it! read more

I've stayed here three times now, and I've been very favorably impressed each time. The building is old and quirky, but they keep up with the maintenance. The rooms are comfortable and very clean. The owner (I assume he's the owner) is always friendly and helpful. The hot water is hot, the showers are hard enough, and there is no lingering smell of old smoke or chemicals such as you often find in older places. If what you need is basic lodging, I'd recommend this establishment without reservation. read more

This place is amazing! We've been in town for a week on business and are grateful we found this place. My husband has thanked me several times for seeking it out. The owner really cares about customer service and it makes a huge difference! This is a lovely, clean hotel with great pricing! read more

Rolled up to this hotel at 4:30am after driving 21 hours straight from New Mexico. Could not be more pleased with how clean and comfortable everything was. Extremely EXTREMELY happy we had the honor of staying here. Best kept place for price we've ever experienced on the road. Many thanks to its keeper. read more

We just stayed here for the second time. It's perfect! Clean, comfy, and cozy. Lots of fresh flowers outside and super friendly management. We will definitely stay here again! read more

I've stayed at Rugged Country many times over the past couple of years, feeling as if I 'discovered' it! Comfy, cozy, friendly staff. The beds are great,& it's darn quiet (the nearby trains do not shake the building, nor blow their horns). Reasonably priced and those great beds and sheets! Ah. . . .So why the 3-star rating? The last couple of times I've stayed, it seems the quality is slipping a bit. Last time I stayed, I thought it was because it was the dead of winter, so maybe the room hadn't been used in a while. This past weekend, we stayed and it just didn't feel the same. Hopefully, they'll get their act together again. I go to Pendleton every few months and stay for 2 or 3 nights, so the RCL's prices are excellent. read more

For the price you really can't get better. It's about the same as Motel 6 and far better. It's certainly cozy. Pros: -Home pseudo bed and breakfast coziness -Nice Staff -Clean room and bathroom -Warm Long Shower -Comfy firm beds and feathered pillows -Solid Internet WiFi, fast enough to game and stream netflix -Plenty of channels on TV -Small continental breakfast: Coffee, Tea, Cider, Bagels and Cream Cheese, Cheerios, Oatmeal, Hard Boiled Eggs, Milk, Juice, Toast -Really good price -Better than all similar priced hotels in area. (I've stayed at all of them at one point) -Away enough from road, no highway noise Cons: -Smallish room, two queen bed room not much space but didn't need much. -A mile off the freeway downhill, problematic in snow storm -Priceline was more expensive than in person, fyi. If you have discounts from AAA, it's better to book on phone or in person. -Takes only VISA, cash or check -No big extras, not much to breakfast read more

This little roadside motel is a real gem and a great deal. Clean spacious rooms run by a welcoming onsite proprietor and his family. Nourishing continental breakfast. If luxury is what you're looking for this may not be the place for you. But if you enjoy a quaint a comfortable place to stop for a day or even more, it deserves 5 stars. read more

I read the other reviews and I must have stayed at another motel. One review complimented Rugged Country for cleanliness. I didn't get that bathroom. At first I thought the slightly grungy bath was just old. But upon closer inspection, what I thought was worn surface turned out to be scum which I could scrape off with my thumbnail. The manager had it cleaned while we went to dinner. But the next morning I showered after my husband and I grabbed the one remaining towel I found spots on both sides. After my experience in the shower I was suspicious. I used the hand towel. Also because it is an older building, there is no fan in the bathroom. Which means you need to leave the window open. Not a problem in the warmer months, but something to consider n the colder months. One review said that her room was big enough for her baby travel cot. It must have been another room than ours, because the only place that would have fit in our room would have been in the closet. The motel signage advertises pillow top mattresses, and our queen bed (the only size bed that will fit in the room, don't bother asking for a king) did have a pillow top. But the box springs were the kind that sent me bouncing every time my husband turned over. Most important: we didn't know that the train ran one block from the motel... day and night. Unlike the reviewer who finds listening to a train rumble by at night to be charming, I do not. Bring your earplugs. To be fair, I've stayed at worse motels, and the price is modest. But this place is a case in point that you get what you pay for. And I wonder if all the glowing reviews are by actual people who stayed at this motel, or paid reviewers. read more

Traveling late one night and pulled into Baker City but all rooms were full due to festival that weekend. Rolled a little farther west and came across the Rugged Country Lodge. I woke Nadeem up a little past midnight and he set me up with a great, quite room and a good price. Quaint place and great value. The Continental breakfast and coffee was a nice bonus. read more

This place is always amazing! My family has stayed here 4 times on our travels from Colorado to Washington. The rooms are the right size and comfortable, there is plenty of room for a pack n play for toddlers, the bed is comfortable, and the water nice and hot! They have one of the best breakfasts before you hit the road to your next destination with local bagels, hot coffee, oatmeal, cereal, milk, orange juice, and bear claws/cinnamon rolls. read more

Wonderful, comfortable and clean! Very lovely people run this hotel. They make our time here even more peaceful

This place is hilarious! My husband and I made our reservations based on all of the positive reviews, not knowing that what we'd actually get was far, far different than what we expected out of a quaint country inn. Friendly staff? Nope. We got an angry chain-smoking woman wearing bunny pajamas. Delicious breakfast? Nah. Help yourself to frozen gas-station burritos, packaged oatmeal, and bottled water. Cozy atmosphere? Not even. It's a glorified drive-in motel next to some train tracks in a run-down part of town. The only positive thing I can say about it is that our room was clean. Stay here only if you have a sense of humor and don't mind overpaying for what you get. read more

This is a good place if you want a cheap room with a comfy clean bed. Don't expect great customer service or 4 star amenities. The place looks cute on the outside. The rooms are old but had new paint and quality soft sheets. The carpets however are badly stained. This gave the room a dirty feel even though it was probably sanitary. I checked in at 4:00 and was handed a key from an unfriendly lady who looked like she just rolled out of bed. I went to my room to find the door open, with a key in the door and I could see an unmade bed. I went back down and told her that she must have given me the wrong room. She said "no, we're just running a bit behind, he's going up there now to clean it". I was confused why she would knowingly give me keys to a room that was not ready. Also, the bathroom light didn't work which we didn't know until late after dinner. The office was closed and dark. We didn't want to risk. "Waking the Kraken" due to having read other reviews prior. read more

Very nice room and clean for the money. I loved he colored tile in the bathroom. Continental breakfast was sufficient. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Only draw backs: my room had a window air conditioner and it was a little noisy but nothing major, and I travel alone and the door lock seemed a bit iffy. A couple minutes drive from downtown, but parking was not a problem. Nice place to stay if you are passing through Pendleton. read more

This motel is a quaint, comfortable motel. Everything was clean, comfortable and well maintained. The owners are friendly, helpful and available. It is within walking distance to the Woolen Mills. The bed was super comfortable. It was difficult to get up and continue on our trip. Pet friendly, too. Was nice to stay in a non chain motel. Very customer service oriented. Will stay here again. Perfectly priced and a Google continental breakfast. read more

Stopped over for a quick night on our way through Pendleton; quiet, comfortable beds, quick breakfast. Friendly owner, even though we woke him up at 11 p.m. to check in! Would definitely stay again, at least for passing through. read more

Great for the price. Rooms are tastefully decorated, warm and secure. Fine location in Pendleton, down the road from a good brewery, prodigal son. We had breakfast burritos and fruit and coffee for breakfast, there were also juice and fruit and hard-boiled eggs and bagels. There wasn't any coffee from 730 to 830 but otherwise no complaints. Would definitely stay again, I think it cost $45. read more

Very hospitable and friendly ... We arrived to offerings of chocolate cake, chocolate chip cookies and coffee in the lobby. The rooms were rustic and a little funky (not bad funky) and super clean, with little touches all over to make them feel homey. Breakfast offerings were simple but good. The biscuits and gravy were very good and they DO make the biscuits there. It was obvious they made a real effort to make their guests feel welcome and take care of them. And we enjoy supporting local businesses wherever possible instead of the national chains. read more
