We stopped in here on the way to Dallas as we have one of their original locations close by our home so we are familiar with the brand. We ordered a pound of moist brisket and a jalapeno sausage link and some drinks and were served promptly by the friendly staff. Since it was the middle of the afternoon they weren't busy but the place was clean and the staff was helpful. Now, the taste test. The brisket was hot, juicy, and very flavorful. The jalapeno sausage link was also spicy with great snap and it was quite tasty. Yes, we didn't get any sides but I don't go to a BBQ place to eat sides. I want to taste the MEAT and it was delicious and the star of the show. I'm not a big sauce guy either but their Rudy's sause IG good with a tangy flavor. While they may not be on the Texas Monthly list of top BBQ places, they put out a satisfying meal for the money and are veteran friendly offering a free meal when they sign up for their veterans club. The only drawback at this location is that the highway construction makes entry and exit tough. Good experience, we will be back! read more

Second and last time I will ever eat from this Rudy's. Since when does a half pound of brisket come in 8 thick slices? I wanted it extra extra dusty dry lean and in the end it was chewy, tough, and still wet with grease. The regular cut was completely greasy fat that I struggled to find any actual meat included. I have a half dozen really special customers and I normally broil some chicken breast for their pets but I didn't have the time to cook today, so I swung by Rudy's for some brisket .. to make Labor day special for them. Big mistake. Once at my first customer's home I opened the regular cut brisket .. honestly it looked like thick sliced Head Cheese. Didn't even want to touch it much less give it to my valued long-term customer's pets. In shame I drove away ... rescheduling my visit for Sunday, giving me time to broil chicken breast for them. Of the 8 thick cut slices of "dry extra extra lean brisket" I managed to find two that didn't gross me out with the texture of a glob of fat in my mouth. I'll never stop at a Rudy's again ... you've blown it with the easiest going old Texan there is. After a two fitness class, my friend and I were super hungry. So, we stopped at Rudy's as we exited San Antonio, TX. It is important to note that there are country stores and franchise stores at Rudy's. This is one of the original corporate stores. Also, pricing can be different at corporate v franchise stores. My friend ordered the special 2 chopped beef sandwiches for $8.99 and Cole slaw. She ate both sandwiches and loved them. I ordered 1/4 turkey and small pinto beans (healthy) and peach cobbler (totally unhealthy). I had been working out for 2 hour, so I earned it (at least that was crazy logic justification). All aspects of the meal was delicious. I believe the food quality at the corporate stores is a bit better than the franchised locations. Rudy's has both indoor and outdoor seating. It has been awhile since been on this location. The ordering is simple and fast. The menu overhead is big and easy to read. The half chicken was very good and tender. Didn't think I could eat half a chicken but today, I proved myself wrong. Very soft and delicious. Place is big inside and have numerous tables with chair to accommodate any small to large size. We ordered chicken, brisket, and half a rack of ribs. This was hands down THE MOST RUBBERY, CHEWEY, DISGUSTING, meat we've ever had here. It was just terrible. We spent almost $80 for a questionable portion of each only to end up throwing most of it out. The taste was awful. The fat hadn't even rendered on this brisket. During the holidays I am often tasked with bringing the sides and this year I had a great idea of placing my order in advanced so that I could grab and go as I headed into town from Austin. Yeah yeah we got a couple of Rudy's in Austin location but this location was closer to my family's gathering for the holidays so I chose this spot as my pickup for my side orders order. Also note that I chose to pickup on Christmas Eve and I was surprised this location was open at 10:00am and ready to go with my order! Several quarts later of beans, potato salad, and cream corn my family was a happy one as we ate our holiday meal. Everything was packaged up perfectly for me to walk out and I got all the sides including bread, pickles, onions, etc. A note about the online ordering - it was easy and I appreciated the coupon they had embedded on their online ordering page where you could get $5 off $30. The other locations I considered did not have a coupon offering like this location offered. I was able to select a date and time in advance for when I wanted to grab my order. From the ease of online ordering and my experience to having an employee help me walk my order out to my car was just the bees knees. Stopped by to order for Sunday family game night and was very disappointed . The guy cutting my meat didn't know how to cut and asked for moist and he say they just cut the meat in half and either you get fatty or dry. I am familiar with Rudy's so I was shocked to hear him say he couldn't give me moist .the meat had no flavor and there was definitely more fat on the meat if that's what you call "Moist". Came in from out of town and stopped in. Carvers and staff were very pleasant. Brisket and sausages were on point BUT the ribs tasted like they were boiled and do disappointing, didn't finish them. Watched the fella slice it and it seriously looked like pot roast. No long, against the grain, slicing. He kept rotating the brisket with each slice. Wonder who taught him this technique?! When they told us the brisket was ready we ordered moist, it was anything other than moist. The brisket was very dry and cold. They also ran out of Mac and cheese and baked potatoes. It's been a while since I have stood in line for some barbecue. Walking up to the door the space reminds you of an old gas station turned restaurant. Smells of smoke smacking you in the face, clinging to your clothes and sweeping through your hair. Moving closer to the front of the line, I can finally take a peek at the menu. Oh yea, I want a little bit of everything. With sauce please. My stomach is growling and all of these smells are making me hangry. I excuse myself to the counter and ask to sample some brisket. I can already tell this isn't normal because the man I asked, asked a lady. She then asked a man. They came and asked me. Yes, please, a sample. I'm hungry. Finally, I was given a tiny piece on parchment paper. Yea, that will do it. Lol. It wasn't the best we've ever had but I'm really happy with our meal each time we've been here. The Jalepeno Sausage was outstanding. The snap of the skin was pure enjoyment each bite. Forgot to take a pic of my marblelized beef brisket!!! I am yet to find another brisket restaurant to match this one. It hit the mark when I wanted wet and fatty brisket. I made sure I did not have any other meats in my order so that I could really test my taste buds well. Their wet and oily/fatty brisket was for me a winner. I loved their Rudy's Bar B Q 'Sause'. I smothered my meat with lots of it but it not kill the meat taste and even enhanced it. I never usually sauce my brisket but this one was truly an exceptional exception. I had cream corn for sides. Believe it or not I tried mixing in the Rudy's BBQ sauce with the cream corn and I loved it. Casual western style dining area was relaxing and ambience was great with country music. I had the chopped beef baked potato, it was loaded with butter , sour cream, cheese and chopped beef, it was delicious. My husband ate a chopped beef sandwich, he said it was very good. Last week I had a hankering for some ribs after my sister mentioned that she was going to Outback for dinner. I stopped by Rudy's on the way home from church to satisfy my carnivorous craving. I was daydreaming about the delicious cream corn side when the smoke filled air hit my lungs. After taking in a few more sips of outside air, I stood in the small line and hurriedly glanced at the menu to select my entree. The smoke was so thick I could have cut it with a knife and I couldn't bear to stand inside any longer. The sweet waitress who's lungs were probably adjusted to the smoke offered me some cream corn in a cup while I waited. After checking out the menu, I ordered a half pound of baby back ribs and a small order of cream corn. The menu offered chicken, ribs and brisket with some sausage pairings. The meals were al a carte and accompanied by pickles, BBQ sauce and slices of white bread. I wanted to leave a higher rating but the ribs were fatty and not worth the $12 and change they charged. The Smoke Shack and Big Bibs are still my favorite choices for ribs. I'd probably come back for the corn but would have to take a hard pass on the meat for the prices they were charging ... Would I recommend... if the prices were lower, the ribs not as fatty because in my opinion it was not worth the money $$... I thank them for the military discount ... My wife and I were on a long weekend trip in San Antonio and I had gone to a Rudy's about 8 years ago on a work trip. This place was a little hard to get to on a frontage road from the Interstate. I walked into the store and then was told to go outside to order from the patio. The servers were nice and I ordered a "Chopped", which was brisket, pork and turkey in their bbq sauce. I got a Shiner Bock to go with it from this huge tub of ice, which was pretty cool. We got a side order of beans for my wife and I to share. The had some pickled jalapenos sitting on the counter and I asked if they were free, they were not, so I passed. The previous time I was here, I want to say the chopped was different, more slabs of meat, but maybe I was wrong. This was more like a chili. It was good, but it was pretty greasy and way more sauce than meat. The beans were good, but nothing really special. My expectations were just super high from the last time I was at a Rudy's and this one was kind of just there. Better than a lot of BBQ in Minnesota, but this is San Antonio. I wanted the best. It's RUDYS BBQ!!!!! If you have not been here... GOOOO!!!! The atmosphere is amazing old school bbq joint filled with smell of smoking meats over oak wood. I have tried tons of bbq since liking in Texas and this is consistently the best!! The staff are always outgoing, friendly and ready to serve! The food, wow!!! Absolutely delicious bbq!! The brisket is always juicy and easy cuts with a fork. The sauce is amazingly delicious. Full of peppery goodness that creates just a touch of heat. The also have a "Not so hot" sauce with almost no pepper which is the equivalent of Bill Millers or Smokey Moe's. So why 4 stars??
