We were looking for a place to get some food and drinks before a concert at the Roxian. Rudy's was right up the street so we stopped in. The bartender was very friendly, attentive and helpful. We got some cheap beers and an enormous ham sandwich with some french fries. Everything was great! The ceiling was leaking which only added to the already fantastic and grimy Pittsburgh feel and gave everyone some good laughs. I would recommend this to anyone looking for some food or a quick drink before a concert at the Roxian!

The definition of dive bar. It stinks, it's grimy and oh yeah it has the best ham sandwich you'll ever eat.

Best ham sandwich ever! Not the most elegant restaurant, but best food for a " dive" bar.

Best place for cheap beer, great ham sandwiches, and pittsburgh's finest folk. Smoking permitted and encouraged.

I've heard so many mixed things that I have to say I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed every aspect of my experience. It kind of has dive bar vibes but the food and drink options are definitely on the elevated side. They open at 4 on Sundays and I got there around 4:15. It was already pretty busy (and by the time I was leaving, every single table and bar stool were occupied). They have standard booth seats along the windows, hightop tables in the middle and bar seating along the bar that curves along the back of the restaurant. I chose to sit at the bar since I was by myself. I was promptly greeted by the bartender. They don't hand you copies of the menu, you have to scan the QR code to access. It is easy to read and follow with sections for drinks, specials (this time they were Wicked themed as a nod to the show at the Benedum) and a sushi section. I ordered the street corn dip. The chips were a bit overcooked and the dip was just OK. I thought it was pricey for what you got. The star of my meal, though, was the patty melt. It had the burger, a bacon jam, caramelized onions and was absolutely delicious! It was served with fries. I considered ordering sushi but wasn't sure what to expect. The patrons sitting on either side of my ordered rolls and they were a nice size and looked delicious, so that is something I would consider ordering in the future. It was a place I'll likely be back to because of the proximity to the theater (although their prices definitely reflect that). Just note how crowded it always is and give yourself plenty of time if you plan on heading here for dinner before the show.

Bonus points for being in Mount Washington, which allowed us to ride the Monongahela Incline up and the Duquesne Incline down. Yes it was a bit of a walk but Bigham Tavern was worth it! It was a Monday night, so there was also live music. Crowd was reasonable and we were seated at a comfortable table with a good view of the television. Our waitress was awesome, so patient! Her patience was tested because we don't drink much and wanted to order the food gradually throughout the game. We benefited from happy hour pricing for a tasty pickle dip and glasses of wine. We added some outstanding wings, so many great flavors to choose from! Next phase was an outstanding gluten free pesto and mozzarella pizza! Crust was too good to be true! The game was rough at first but turned around in time for me to order the Big Ham sandwich with a side of kale salad. The sandwich was delicious and served on a pretzel bun. The kale salad was an awesome side dish, tons of flavor! The game kept improving and we enjoyed the rest of it in the bar area with some great fans. Lots of televisions. Great neighborhood vibe! Will gladly return when we're back in town!

My first trip to Pittsburgh meant a lot of firsts, including my first meal in the city…read more After a 3:30 AM wake-up call and a flight into Pittsburgh, my 18-year-old travel companion Jackson and I were more than ready for lunch. Normally I travel with his dad so this trip was a little different. Jackson has heard plenty of stories about all the places his father and I have eaten over the years, so this time I handed him the responsibility of picking our first restaurant. Working downtown, we needed something close by and landed at RedBeard's Sports Bar & Grill. The short walk through downtown Pittsburgh was interesting, but the weather was another story. Hot, humid, and muggy. By the time we arrived, the restaurant was busy and only outdoor seating was available. We took a table outside but asked if we could move indoors when something opened up. Our server, Lauren, was fantastic from start to finish. Friendly, attentive, and she made sure we were well taken care of. I let Jackson choose the appetizer and he knocked it out of the park with the mozzarella sticks. Crispy on the outside, loaded with gooey melted cheese on the inside, and paired with a very good marinara sauce. Definitely a strong start to the meal. Jackson and I quickly came to the same conclusion: air conditioning exists for a reason. Patio dining has its place, but a hot and humid Pittsburgh afternoon isn't it. Thankfully, we were able to move inside once a table became available. For my meal, I ordered the Reuben, one of my go-to sandwiches whenever I see it on a menu. RedBeard's version didn't disappoint. Plenty of corned beef, good flavor throughout, and everything worked well together. I requested my fries well-done with no seasoning, and they came out exactly the way I like them. Jackson went with the Inside-Out Grilled Cheese and was thrilled with his choice. Judging by how quickly it disappeared, I'd say it was a winner. I don't know when I'll find myself back in Pittsburgh, but I enjoyed both the restaurant and the downtown atmosphere. Good food, excellent service from Lauren, and a solid first dining experience in the city. 4 stars from me. I'd happily stop back in the next time work brings me to Pittsburgh.

"You're not the only one With mixed emotions…read moreAnd you're not the only ship Adrift on this ocean" (Rolling Stones) McFadden's was a real mixed bag for us. It was a Pirates game night, and the fans were starting to roll in. We grabbed dinner before the game and were pretty underwhelmed. Service was very slow, with long lapses. The food was good- Philly Steak Nachos with Tater Tots ($16) and an Italian Deli Panini ($14) with Onion Rings ($3). Soft drinks were $3 each. Besides the service issues, we found the restaurant to be in a state of disrepair. The tables were very "icky-sticky". Oh, let's talk about the restrooms too. There are three paper towel dispensers in each restroom. In the men's room all 3 were empty. In the ladies' room, one was empty. Now in baseball 2 out of 6 equates to a .300 batting average which is terrific. But when it comes to availability of paper towels, that's an epic fail.

Sadly, they changed their burgers (previously good) to smashburgers. I'm not a fan of those, so I don't know how theirs compare. I got a wrap and tho the chips weren't as good as before, the chicken in my grilled chicken wrap was perfectly prepared & very tender. The egg rolls were also delicious! Service wasn't great, even before they got crowded, but it was good enough. I was surprised that tho they remodeled some the floor is still the same horrible sticky floor that reminds me of a dive bar or gray party. They also have a bathroom attendant which I (& my allergies) hate. I'm allergic to perfumes and it was horrible. They did allow children in the dining area, which was a surprise and worked well for our group. I'm not sure if this policy (not carding at the door) is in place for games or even all concerts, so if you're dining with children before a game or show, I'd recommend calling to ask. The location can't be beaten when going to events at PNC Park. Still a very good option.
