I love coming to this place, one of the few places where you can come in and pick and choose whatever bread you'd like. They also have fresh squeezed juices, tortas and tamales that come out piping hot. I like getting myself a tamal and a bolillo to make myself a guajolota. It's quite funny how Ruby's Pan Dulce in the only real panderia in town. You would think that with the huge Latino community in the Mountain View/Sunnyvale area, there would be more in this area. Ruby's Pan Dulce is my go-to whenever I need my pan dulce fix. I wouldn't say that this place serves up the BEST pan dulce in the area. I personally think that (if you are willing to make the extra drive) the panderias in East San Jose are much better. However, this place will definitely satisfy your craving if you live in the nearby area. They have two pastry items (don't know their names... I know that's super helpful!) that are absolutely delicious and are my go-tos whenever I have a sugar craving in the morning. The prices are also ridiculously cheap especially for Sunnyvale. I am recently on the other side of that day that comes once a year where you become a year older. To soothe the sorrows, I'm usually happy to pickup a slice of cake from my local Safeway. This year, I definitely wanted tres leches and decided to try a location recommended by fellow Yelpers. Safeway actually makes a pretty good tres leches. I've made a pretty good one, too, but it of course involved two things that put me in complete misery--whipping egg whites (the sponge) and heavy cream (whipped cream frosting) into stiff peaks. After reading the reviews of Ruby's, this was the place to try. I fully expected to walk in and come out with just a slice of cake, but it quickly evolved into a smorgasbord. Had to grab a slice of the well reviewed corn bread, I usually can't walk away from a concha, and why not some cookies. There were a ton of offerings. Nothing was labeled or had prices. Since it was a special occasion, caution was thrown to the wind to satisfy eating pleasure. The whole haul was just under $20. The vibe was definitely of a neighborhood joint with patrons constantly flowing in and out and making quick work of what they wanted. It was also cool to see the bakers working in the kitchen! The tres leches slices are in a refrigerated case at the register, only accessed by the staff. At Safeway, you have to check each piece for dry spots so I was hoping I would get to do the same here. Another reviewer pointed out a concern about the dating system. I was a bit concerned, too, when the piece I was given was marked with a Tuesday sticker and this was Saturday. It was within the sell by date and upon digging in, it had no issues at all and was very tasty. There was a teeny section that was not soaked, but the sponge was perfectly moist to make up for it. At home, I dressed it up with some fresh strawberries. Favorite cookies were the jelly thumbprints and the darker cookie at the bottom of the picture. I wrapped up the concha to have the next day and it was still first day fresh. I wish Ruby's was my neighborhood joint because I would be back way too often! read more

I visited this place for the first time even though I go by pretty regularly on bike rides. It provides a good counterpoint for dessert to the taqueria at the other end of the strip mall. Perhaps that's what Ruby had in mind. It took me a minute of watching the regulars to figure out what I was doing. When you go in, you grab a tray and some tongs and pick out what delicious treats you want to buy and take home with you. My wife got choco flan, and I got a lovely looking croissant with some kind of filling. Both treats were very good. I would never have thought of putting flan on top of chocolate cake, and it was a bit of a taste adjustment but I ended up liking it quite a bit. The croissant I had was filled with vanilla custard and it was also very good. The young men staffing the counter were very friendly and helpful. Definitely recommend. read more

Ive been meaning to go here for years and finally stopped by one afternoon. It's a small, well stocked bakery that's been around a very long time. They have lots of shelves with trays and trays of the the usual treats to choose from. I tried a chocolate concha, a pink and white roll dusted with sugar and one that was more of a cornbread cake texture and flavor with a light frosting. A small cute corner bakery that's plentiful in goodies! I came in on a weekday afternoon to get myself some treats for the week and they had just re-stocked the shelves with freshly baked pan dulce. It was a bit overwhelming since it was my first time here and I had no idea what anything was. This place would definitely benefit from labeling the items for new visitors but in the meantime, looking up "traditional Mexican baked goods" and identifying the goods that way on Google will suffice! I grabbed nearly one of every shape to try and they were on the drier crumbly side of the baked goods spectrum. It doesn't fit my tastes but I could see folks having these with a nice glass of milk or some hot chocolate/coffee. There is a pastry featured on the side shelves that mimicked a dense syrup-y pound cake that was absolutely delicious, I'd come back for that if I were ever in the area. The cashiers I came across only spoke to me in Spanish but were full of smilies and warm greetings when I came up to pay. The prices are ridiculously cheap and they accepted cash or card which made the process convenient. Afterwards they wrapped the goodies in plastic bags to go. My coworkers took me here and this is probably my favorite tamales place now. I tried all theirs tamales and I can't pick a favorite. My partner and I absolutely love tres leches and Reddit said this is one of the best places in the Bay. I spontaneously decided to visit this place at 7pm on a cold rainy day. I called the store beforehand to make sure they had some slices left. When I arrived, there were only two! I get why because it truly was one of the best tres leches in the Bay Area! It was so moist, creamy, and the perfect amount of sweetness. It was priced at $5.30ish which is reasonable in this economy. I do wish they added in strawberries or some fruit to add more flavor but I suppose I can do that myself at home. Overall, I loved this bakery and I would definitely come back to have that tres leches and maybe check out some of the other desserts :) read more

Delectable offerings at great prices! There are so many other items available outside the pan dulce selections: fresh fruit juices, tamales, champorado, and sandwiches. I want to try everything! I ordered 4 pork tamales, 1 sopapilla, 1 koncha, 1 jelly roll, 2 pink polvorones, and 4 cream-filled horns. All this for about $20. Everything was so good! It's a small bakery and can get crowded, but the service is pretty fast. The staff is also very nice. I wish I lived closer, I'd be here every week. I was craving conchas and tamales and got to fix both my cravings at this bakery. The pink and white conchas are amazing. Big, so fluffy on the inside, and a nice crunchy cookie crust. I highly recommend grabbing these. My rule of thumb when unsure what to order is to grab whatever seems to be running out as those are the popular items. It didn't lead me astray here. I also got two chicken tamales that were piping hot from their steamer pot. For two conchas and two tamales,I paid $10 which is a great deal. The tamales were also a generous portion and perfect ratio of masa to filling. As others have said, staff mainly speak Spanish but are very friendly and helpful. I didn't have issues with parking going in the morning but I can see it getting busier later in the day as this bakery shares a lot with a grocery store and restaurant. The smell of baked goods as you walk in the store is incredible. Many of the items are self serve using trays and sheets of paper, similar to a Paris Baguette. Maybe I've gotten used to overpriced bakery items in the Bay Area, but the items at Ruby's were surprisingly reasonably priced. One example was a Mexican style chocolate croissant. The pastry was soft and had a nice chew to it; and instead of sticks of melted chocolate inside, the croissant was filled with a chocolate pudding. Great experience. read more

I always come here when I'm doing laundry next door. It's a cute bakery with plenty of options for sweet Mexican bread, Cakes (did I mention tres-leches and flan), Tamales, Freshly-squeezed Juices and more. It's a definite must to try if you live in the neighborhood (Sunnyvale - Near Maud & Mathilda). The staff is extremely nice and helpful. Don't hesitate to ask if you are confused by the lack of signs/labels/prices. That is the only thing, since they are so authentic they don't post up a lot of info (just like the neighborhood pan dulce spot in the motherland). It's a small place just for pick-up, no seating available. The only reason why it's not 5 stars for me, is because there is sometimes a lack of consistency with the menu. For example the Tamales are always different than the sign description. This places sells out by the evening, so go early to get your freshly baked "Pan Dulce." read more

I am sorry but I had to dock a star based on my most recent visit. I stopped by to pick up Pan Dulce and to order a cake for my company celebration of Cinco de Mayo. As usual, their selection of Pan Dulce was extensive/plentiful. I ended up getting enough items to fill a cake box! And the final price was unreal in terms of how inexpensive it all was. The crew loved each and every item I picked! Great Job! My experience ordering the cake was a different story. I cannot speak a lick of Spanish so it was very difficult to convey to the counter people that I wanted to order a cake. After 5 mins or so of struggling, a coworker of theirs came by and was able to take my order. No biggie as I was able to place my order. The problem occurred when I went to pick up the cake. Luckily I had my receipt so there was no communication issue in retrieving my cake. However, the cake decorator made a huge mistake on what was written on the cake. Really!? The information on the receipt was close enough and they did not get it right. I decided to take the cake "as-is" as I could not wait to have them try to correct their error. They have delicious tamales that are $3 each. The tamales are pretty generous size so no complaints on the price. I got 2 pork and 2 chile rellenos with cheese and the seasoning was delicious for the interior and exterior. The masa was just right, not bland, sweet or dry. The tamales came our fresh and hot at around noon when I dropped by. I also bought a piece of their flan and a piece of tres leches to try. I definitely recommend you come try their flan or even buy a flan cake if you have an event. The tres leches cake wasn't too sweet at all and was moist. Since then, I have tried this at different places, including this one. Pros: Good taste. Friendly staff. Decent price point. Cons: There are only a few specific types of pan dulce I like. I don't really know their name, but recognize them from appearance. Although they have a good variety available in store, they don't have most of the ones that I like.
