My guy and I visited here recently and I must say, it's been awhile since I've had such a poor experience at a restaurant. It's been a few years since I've been here (since they first opened), and I am in no hurry to return. What went wrong shouldn't be the question. What actually went right should be asked. Let's start at the beginning. We visited on a beautiful Saturday mid morning but were quickly seated after arriving. The server asked us if he could start us off with drinks. I shared I was there for the Yelp event, and he ignored that and repeated his question about drinks. He also stated he was busy, which I didn't know how to take. I felt rushed to make my drink decision, which ended up in me not enjoying the iced vanilla coffee I settled upon. For our order, we ordered the original beignets, the breakfast sandwich with potatoes and the 3 Little Piggy Omelette with cheese grits. After waiting for 20-30 minutes, our server returned to say that he just realized that our order was not in the queue. He said that that had never happened to him before, and said that maybe the weather was making the computers mess up. He said he would put in a rush for our food. I can say he seemed apologetic but I think it was an error on his part, not the computer. After all, he had already mentioned how "busy" he was. And I've never known a sunny, cloudless day to mess with computers. He typed our order in again and this time, the food was out within 15 minutes. The beignets were the best part of the meal. The breakfast sandwich (on sourdough) was hard and dry. The potatoes looked unappealing and lacked salt. My guy remarked his food was ok but commented on how "used" the butter looked. See included picture. The server checked on us periodically. We are not complainers so no we didn't mention any of this to the server. After requesting a box for the leftovers and the check, it was another 15-20 minutes before we saw either, even though he came around twice more and repeated what we had asked him for. We did leave a tip although this was one of the poorest experiences we've had in ages. We will not return anytime soon to this location.
My first time here. Don't know why I haven't come before. It was very good. I had the King Cake beignets. They were outstanding. I also had the Trifecta Eggs Benedict. It was really good. Had to take some of it to go. It's a lot of food. Coffee was very good. Food came out quickly. Caelyn was my server. She was great. Very personable and had great recommendations. Restaurant is pretty large. Outside tables as well. It's an upbeat environment. I loved it.
I went to Ruby Sunshine for brunch with a friend this weekend. Surprisingly, it wasn't jam packed when we arrived but I'd still gotten on the waitlist ahead of time just in case. I chose an omelet with bacon, sausage, and ham. Paired with the grits, it made a great meal and I had a lavendar paloma as well. Yum!
Amazing decor and ambience, very good service, my breakfast was amazing. Got the Costa Rican breakfast with over medium eggs, beignets, and French toast bites. The only thing I didn't care for was the French toast bites. Really enjoyed this place!
The food is still remarkable here. They are known best for its breakfast Benedict's (aka Bennie's) For starters we did the French Toast Bites, actually this could be a meal. My favorite is still the Chicken St.Charles (that Tasso gravy is to die for). We also had the cinnamon swirl pancakes, which my husband enjoyed. Don't let appearances fool you--the decor may be divey, but the brunch is fantastic. Our server Brittany was awesome as well.
Came here for a late breakfast. It was busy for a Saturday but not when you sit at the bar. I came in and immediately got a seat at the bar. Got my vanilla iced coffee and fruity pebble beignets. The beignets were good. The sweetness wasn't too much. My vanilla iced coffee was good as well. The waiter was fantastic. Great way to start this beautiful Saturday!
One of the best brunches in Birmingham. Attentive service and casual vibe. The brisket Benedict was by far the best in the Benedict trio. Don't miss out, as I believe this is a March special! Would recommend making it permanent over the fried chicken and Cajun shrimp Benedict's easily. The beignets were fabulous as someone who doesn't usually order dessert.
I visited this restaurant for the first time recently. I walked up and was greeted and sat promptly. The vibe is "brunch casual" with a clean and welcoming atmosphere. My waiter was fairly busy but he was able to manage very efficiently. He had a great sense of humor and was able to suggest things when I couldn't make my mind up. Everything I ordered was delicious! I'll definitely come back and put this spot in my "brunch rotation" of restaurants.
I was surprised at how good the fish flavor was. I was not much a fan of the biscuits which I saw was a staple. Nonetheless service was speedy and friendly . The restaurant was clean and severs did a great job of cleaning along the way.
We wanted to find a great breakfast spot while in town. We were quickly greeted and seated and proceeded to look over the menu. Everything was delicious from the omelets to the stone grits and the fried green tomatoes. The ambiance is chill and good for groups. I will definitely return whenever I'm back in town.
I wanted a new place that I could go to while my tires were being replaced. I found this gem in my search and after seeing the menu, I had to try it! To learn a bit of the story that started the business (or at least the name), made me appreciate this spot even more. (See photo) We went on a Saturday late morning (about 10:30). The restaurant was quite full, with lots of people out on the patio. There isn't much parking available so it can be tricky to get a spot. There is some street parking available as well. I loved the vibe of the restaurant. There is a bar area for those wishing to sit there and enjoy brunch mimosas. I also love the tall booths that provide a more private dining area from the tables in front of you and behind you. Our server was Trey. He gave us some helpful information about the menu items and gladly shared his favorite dishes upon asking. He was prompt, polite and professional. He did get a large party outside so my coffee cup sat empty but he came in and apologized for that. Now the food.... My son got the Costa Rican Breakfast and really enjoyed it. He said it would be even better with a starch, perhaps potatoes. I had the Eggs Cochon and let me tell you.. it was a solid 10/10!!!! The flavor in the meat alone was outstanding. Two poached eggs. A biscuit for that comfort element, along with spinach for the healthy element. Then add the incredible creaminess and burst of flavor in the hollandaise sauce... perfection! I savored every bite and left NO CRUMBS! I will absolutely be back to this location. I will just have a hard time getting something different from the dish that was perfect and throughly enjoyed.
Yes I know I'm late smh...I finally made it to Ruby Sunshine!!! Omg omg omgggggg....everything from the customer to the food was amazing we sat at the table by the bar so the bartender was our server and he was fun and hilarious we started off with a bacon bloody mary and let's just say I was a little tipsy at 9am lol (it's 5 O'clock somewhere ) We started off with their delicious candy bacon(you gotta try it) I ordered the Sweet Heat Chicken & French Toast Bites....omgggggg, it was absolutely amazing...I literally had to do a happy dance! The Mr. got Three Little Pigs Omelet with a side of grits and toast...we both cleaned our plate in 0.5secs lol I will 10000% be back
I was really pretty disappointed by my visit to Ruby Sunshine-Homewood. A friend was visiting from out of town and I have been to the Ruby sunshine on 280 multiple times and have always had a good experience, but this location definitely left a bad taste in my mouth. When we walked in, The girl at the hostess stand was texting away, and the second girl standing up there asked us how many. There were just two of us and we didn't mind sitting at the bar so we waited only a moment before we were sat, which was actually really fast for Sunday brunch! I will say that where we were sad was dirty, and we were not offered a place at the bar until we specifically asked for it, but instead told there was a 40 minute wait. They did clean up the area before we sat down, of course. We had blueberry lavender mimosas, and they were pretty good. My friend got the Costa Rican breakfast, and I got the bananas Foster French toast. As you can see in the picture, I only got a few tiny tiny pieces of banana and those were very overcooked. The French toast had not had the egg mixture mixed up properly, and as a result several spots on my French toast were just big gooey pieces of egg. I asked for bacon, which was two dollars extra. The pieces were pretty small and had been unceremoniously dumped in my syrup, so what I was hoping would be a salty reprieve from the sweetness of French toast, ended up in messy gooey bacon. Our waitress was really sweet, but she definitely looked like she was overwhelmed. I'm not sure if this was a Staffing issue or what. All in all, I'm more than a little embarrassed that out of all the great restaurants in Birmingham, I brought my out-of-town friend to this one and got a subpar experience. I won't be back to this location.

Pleasantly surprised at this new addition to the Birmingham brunch scene. Open space, comfortable seating, convenient location, and affordable and tasty brunch food options. I was worried about having a long wait time based on the other Yelp reviews, by my friend and I were seated within 5 minutes of entering the restaurant on a Saturday around 12:30pm. We ordered mainly from their Eggs Benedict part of the menu. We shared a Creme Brûlée pancake (so good!) read more

Seated quickly but slow to get food. Ours took 45 minutes. I got the French toast sticks. They were very good. We couldn't order mimosas until after the clock passed noon. They are still waiting to get their local open container district license for Edgewood. We had a good experience other than the food taking a while. Another good brunch spot for Bham. Oh one last thing. Parking here is impossible. Good luck with that! read more

So, the only reason I'm not giving 5 stars is because it's a new restaurant & the wait was insane... let's just let that be. So, the grand opening is not slated until 8/27. We decided to go today for brunch for a cousins birthday. We had a party of about 12-16 people but, we were not able to sit together because of the amount of people that were on the wait list. Not sure if this will change, but as of 8/25- there's no call ahead seating/reservations. We finally got seated about an hour and half after waiting but, the wait area (outside) was fully functional with games and an outside bar so with drinks coming and other competitive people in our group, the wait seemed like a good 30 minutes lol. When seated, the servers were knowledgeable enough about the menu and offerings. Food came out fresh and delicious. With a party of 12-16 and no complaints, I think that speaks to itself. Majority of the folks left with to-go boxes as well so, that also works! I'm interested to go back in a few months when the "new hype" has gone down a bit to judge the consistency. Stay tuned... read more

I was looking for a good brunch spot on a Saturday morning and I found one! There was a long wait, but we used yelp to add ourselves to the waitlist and knew when we needed to check in. This was was easy and helpful. The menu has so many delicious sounding options, it was hard to choose. I love eggs Benedict so I went with that. I got the fried chicken St Charles and the hot smoked salmon. Both were soooo good and the biscuits they were served on were yummmm. I preferred the st charles because the chicken was perfectly fried and paired so well with the biscuit. I'm addition to great food, our server was very friendly and helpful. My only suggestion is that they add a gluten free substitute bread to their menu. They say to ask about gf menu options, but really it is then suggesting an omelet with a fruit bowl instead of a biscuit. I'm not gluten free, but the friend I went with us. She was still pleased with her meal, but I think that would be a great addition. And in a place like Homewood, I do think it would be worth it for their business. Overall, I reallly enjoyed this place and plan to go bacK soon. read more
We dined a Ruby Sunshine during their soft opening today. Overall, our experience was fantastic. What more could you ask for than bringing a little New Orleans flair to Homewood? The menu offers a versatile selection of brunch and lunch items, as well as cocktails. We started with the iced vanilla latte. This coffee beverage was very tasty, although rather sweet. Next time I would definitely ask if the sugar can be reduced. My friend ordered the Trifecta, which was a great way to sample several of the eggs benedict varieties. She was very surprised to find that out of the chicken, pork and shrimp options, the pork was her favorite, as she's not typically much of a pork fan. I was so torn between the more health conscious option: the grilled fish with grit cakes or the cheesecake stuffed French toast. I ended up taking the "healthier" route today and immensely enjoyed it. The grit cakes were amazing-fried very crispy and they seemed to be cheesy. The service was great, the food was fantastic and another brunch spot was certainly my needed in the area. We can't wait to return! read more

Hi Mandy,…
Hot & Trending new digs off of Oxmoor rd in homewood. Be prepared to wait and there are no reservations! A friend and I came here on Labor Day around 11:45 or so and the place was packed with people already dining and people waiting to be seated! The hostess greeted us nicely when we arrived and informed us of the 45 wait . We decided to get on the waiting list since this wasn't too ridiculous of a wait time considering longer wait times others experienced when they came here. I gave the hostess my name and phone number so she could contact me by text message once our table was available. Fair enough . During our wait , there were some seats to open up at the bar area but we just decided to just wait on a table/ booth. Our wait wasn't bad at all . We ordered drinks at the bar and looked over the menu so it was the perfect use of the time. I had the Ruby Sunshine mimosa and my guest had the Peach Bellini. I enjoyed my beverage BUT the peach Bellini was way better and extremely delicious! OMG!! The bartenders did a great job with our drink orders! Fast forward to the food. We were starving so it seem like it took another 45 mins to eat. I ordered the banana pecan pancakes/ bacon and added a side of corned beef & hash. My friend had a burger and fries . Its important to note that they don't have pickles or ranch. My friend enjoyed her food despite there being no pickles and no ranch . I'm sure next time , it'll be a BYOB/BYOR situation for my friend . I enjoyed my meal ; the serving sizes were generous but not the side of corned beef and hash! Wish it was a little bigger especially for $4.50. It was really good, nonetheless. Pancakes and bacon were extremely tasty together. OH and I can't forget the coffee. It was just a normal cup of Joe but it was a perfect blend. Our server was Jennifer , I believe. She was good and attentive . I plan to bring my mom to Ruby Sunshine soon. read more

GREAT experience! New Orleans style breakfast food. It took us forever to decide what to order because everything on the menu looked so delicious! I started out with the Ruby Mimosa, while my friend got the spiked iced coffee. Both were delicious. For my food, I ended up trying the Brioche French toast with bacon and a side of eggs. Simple, but oh so delicious! My friend got the maple bacon pancakes which were so unique and tasty! Next time, I want to try something off the Eggs Benedict section of the menu. Our server was also AWESOME. He was super knowledgeable, friendly, and energetic. I wish I could remember his name, but he's the one with gorgeous long blonde hair read more

Delicious and definitely the place to go if you want a hearty breakfast. The staff was super friendly and helpful and the restaurant itself was decorated well. All of their dishes are made from scratch in the restaurant. We started off with some ruby red mimosas and they were delicious. They were pretty generous with the amount of champagne in the drink, and the flavors were nice. For my entree, I ordered the peacemaker, which is a choice of 2 of their eggs Benedict dishes. I ended up choosing the eggs cochon and the chicken st. charles. I loved the flavors of the pork in the eggs cochon, which surprised me because I'm not really the biggest fan of pork. The chicken in the chicken st. charles was a little bland in my opinion but the pork Tasso cream on top definitely helped. The dish also came out a little cold, which was a tad disappointing. However, they did just open so they could still be getting in the groove of things. I'll definitely still be coming back though when I'm feeling a more filling breakfast. read more

We went before the opening for a fund raiser. Atmosphere nice. Step up booth seating around the bar, near concept. Everyone super nice, waitress did a fine job. I particularly didn't see anything out of the ordinary special. I did not like my Bloody Mary it was rather thick, not to my liking, however it may be to others. Once they get all settled, the outside will be the place to go sit and hopefully listen to some love music. read more

This is poor customer service and poor quality food that is overpriced. The restaurant was not busy to have made us wait for 30 minutes to get our food. On top of that, our waitress never came to check on us. She was uninterested and disengaged. When our food was brought out, it looked cold, soggy, and oily. Sure enough I touched my food and it was cold!!! The food preparation was also poorly done and I'm not sure how they make their food but these tacos were disgusting this time around. They couldn't even fold the taco properly...For the most part, these tacos have been a 7/10 but today it was 2/10 for lack of taste and quality. It looked like vomit that was thrown altogether. Try a different brunch place, this ain't it. read more

This was my first time coming to Ruby Sunshine and it did not disappoint. We started off with Peach Bellini's because we were celebrating my friend's upcoming wedding and they were delicious. I tried fried green tomatoes for the first time and now I'm hooked, the sauce truly takes them over the top. For my entree I had The Peacemaker and chose the crawfish Benedict and the corned beef Benedict. My meal was so good and as an indecisive person I loved having the option of being able to choose more than one Benedict. My friends had pancakes and they looked so good, I will definitely be trying those on my next visit. read more

We heard about Ruby Sunshine restaurant and have been wanting to try it. We found this one and decided to stop. Wow!!!! What a lucky day for us!!!! It was absolutely AWESOME!!!!!!! We did have a longer wait time than anticipated. BUT IT WAS WORTH IT!!!!! The food was outrageously AWESOME!!!! There was 7 of us and we had huge biscuits and the most delicious sausage gravy, praline and bacon pancakes, eggs Benedict over biscuits with pulled pork over them. Which came with a couple of the best fried green tomatoes you ever had!! We also had cut up brioche made into French toast bites with a cream over them and a praline dipping sauce that will rock your world!!!!!! OMG!!!! Everything was delicious. But that brioche French bread bites with that praline dipping sauce was off the charts!!!!!! Everyone had to have some of it. YUM! And everyone knows what having the right server can mean for your dining experience!! And we had one of the best!!!! You'll be very lucky to get Brianna as your server!! She was sooooo sweet, courteous, "available"!!!!!! And right on point with our order!!!!!!!! AWESOME JOB BRIANNA!! Thank you!!! If I could I'd give them 20 stars!!!!! Le me see, have I made it clear we liked our visit?!?!?!?!! Ha! Go There!! It's well worth the wait. read more

Great atmosphere, great energy, great food! When the mimosas are served with popsicles, you know you're gonna have a great experience! The menu has everything you want in a brunch menu-signature dishes to traditional. I highly recommend the Pig Candy Bacon bites! At our table everyone loved the shrimp and grits, the French toast, the Spanish Omelet and Southern breakfast (served with fried green tomato). The staff was friendly and fun! Would highly recommend! read more

Fantastic place for brunch! My wife had the Migas and I ordered the Trifecta which consisted of the Eggs Cochon, Chicken St. Charles & Shrimp Boogaloo. Boy were we excited and surprised our food! Everything was delicious! It was all good, but my personal fave was the Eggs Cochon. The highlight of the whole experience was actually while we were waiting in line. We decided to wait inside by the bar because it was cold outside and we had our 7 month old baby. Nick, the bartender saw that and brought my wife a bar stool from the back. He was extremely kind and attentive when he didn't have to be. He's the main reason I decided to post this review, and kind people like him are the reason we will keep going back! It doesn't hurt that the food here is a 5/5! Win-Win for us! read more

Came here for brunch with my cousin. We saw the summer specials and immediately ordered the peaches and cream seasonal beignets and the pride takes flight mimosas, which includes blackberry lavender, strawberry thyme, peach bellini, and blue orange. The beignets came out quickly and were so fresh and just the correct amount of sweetness. My favorite flavored mimosas from the flights was the blackberry lavender. I definitely would get I full size of it if it was possible. The portions were huge, so we decided to split the crawfish and grits benedict. The fried grits were amazing, eggs benedict were cooked to perfection, and the crawfish was tasty. I'm already daydreaming about what to order next time. read more

Yum! I wasn't even really in the mood for brunch till I came here. I thought I had heard bad things about this place, but boy was I wrong! This place was awesome. It still has the old Bartaco atmosphere I loved with a very inviting inside and outdoor area, but just brunch now instead! I loved how it wasn't just your typical pancakes, eggs, bacon on the side and mimosas. They had lots of drinks and food options. It was hard to decide what to get! First off, service was amazing from the hostess to our actual server. I had a morning margarita to drink. It was pretty and made for good pictures, but a little strong for me personally in the daytime. I ordered the Migas to eat. Delicious! Scrambles are some of my favorite breakfast/brunch choices so they definitely didn't disappoint there! Everything was perfect from the avocado, chipotle ranch, eggs, chorizo and the cheese to the pico de gallo. The tortilla strips were definitely the highlight of the dish! We had a bit of a wait considering it was Easter Sunday, but there were plenty of benches and table to wait outside at. I highly recommend this place! read more

Well this is one of the newest additions to the homewood area. Yes - this is a chain and I was skeptical as I have eaten at the ruby slipper on the gulf and well anything on the beach is better because you're at the beach. We decided to try brunch on October 26th. This restaurant has only been open since August so I expected it to be busy on a Saturday and I was correct. Lucky for me I used the no wait app and got in line. By the time we got there we were seated in about 5 minutes. Unfortunately it was pouring rain and they sat us outside. Yes this is a covered seating area but when it is raining hard you will still get mist. The restaurant should have closed this area in my opinion. I ordered the croque madame which is a huge ham and swiss sandwich covered in egg custard and grilled then topped with a cream sauce and an egg (I like mine over easy). The brioche bread was fresh but cut really thick. Bread to meat and cheese ratio was off. Still it did taste good. The side of Cajun slaw however was lacking any "Cajun" flavor so I sent that back and asked for fries. I think this place has potential but needs a little fine tuning. We will give it a few months before we return - maybe next time it won't be raining ! read more

There's a reason this place is always busy. The food is absolutely delicious! I actually came here for the first time on a Friday, and liked it so much I went back on Sunday for brunch. My first trip here, I got the bacon praline pancakes. And the second time, I wanted to try a lunch dish so I got the fried chicken sandwich sweet heat style with Mike's Hot Honey. It was so good. I would put it on my list of favorite chicken sandwiches, right up there with the super crunch from Hero's. (I would only deduct half a star because I like to dip my fries in ranch dressing, but they didn't have any). We also tried the French toast bites as an appetizer, they were tasty but a bit too sweet for my liking. read more
